De vijfde gezamenlijke lijst van 1988, met dank aan 10 nieuwe lijstjes.

Vorige week waagde ik te voorspellen dat The Bangles in 1 week de flinke voorsprong van de Pet Shop Boys zouden inhalen, en dat is ze, nipt, gelukt! Gerust kunnen ze niet zijn, want Paolo Conte heeft nieuwe steun verworven en staat nog maar 9 punten achter The Bangles.

In de lijst zijn verder weinig grote wijzigingen te vinden, maar wel vier binnenkomers. De hoogste is van kindsterretje Tiffany, die met een vrolijke cover in Amerika een wereldhit scoort, en in Nederland ook hoge ogen gooit, en zelfs in onze MuMe-niche doet ze het uitstekend (op de bestraffende bespreking van LucM na).

Twee enthousiaste deelnemers zijn voldoende om de hitmix van Italiaans damesdiscoduo Fun Fun op 14 te laten binnenkomen. Aan de andere kant van het muzikale spectrum vinden we dan Pink Floyd met On the turning away, dat opnieuw binnenkomt. En als laatste entert Bruce Springsteen met de titelsong van zijn album Tunnel of love, en misschien is het vooral opvallend dat het met zoveel moeite gepaard gaat voor zo'n wereldartiest om überhaupt binnen te komen.

Het is niet moeilijk om als nieuwe tip van de week aan te wijzen: R.E.M. met Finest worksong.

1 en 2 gelijk; de nummers 3 t/m 7 stijgen allemaal één plaatsje, mogelijk gemaakt door het zakken van Bruce Springsteen. Mandinka is de snelste stijger.

Weer vijf binnenkomers (mijn gemiddelde). Op 22 de verfrissend sterke single van David Lee Roth van zijn tweede solo-album. Just like paradise. De song knalt uit de speakers en doet niet onder voor het beste van Van Halen.

Op 26 George Harrison die tekstueel en muzikaal teruggrijpt naar de Beatles-tijd, toen ze 'fab' waren. Dat levert een aardige pastiche op, maar meer ook niet.

Op 35 een gestileerde song van Godley & Creme, met mondharmonica en gospelkoortjes, en een (uiteraard) kunstige clip. Ook hier geldt: grappig gedaan, maar geen meesterwerk (ik kwam hier wat tegengestelde meningen tegen, maar wat mij betreft ligt de waarheid in het midden).

Op 38 de grote hit van Terence Trent d'Arby, Sign your name. Goed en overtuigend uitgevoerd, maar het pakt me niet echt. Sterker nog, hoger dan 38 gaat hij niet komen!

En op 39 ook nog de Sideshow van Wendy & Lisa, en ook hier geldt weer, leuk voor een keertje, maar niet voor vaak.

Volgende week wat meer nieuwe songs met een langere adem...

Tipparade-lijst van week 5, 1988 - top40.nl

1. Eric Carmen - Hungry Eyes
Afkomstig uit de soundtrack Dirty Dancing die meer hits voortbracht. Productioneel duidelijk in de tijdgeest maar nu nog steeds goed te pruimen vooral dankzij de prima zang.
Cijfer: 7

21. Pebbles - Girlfriend
Pebbles ... dan denk ik eerder aan de Belgische sixtiesband met onvergetelijke hits als 7 Horses in the Sky en Get Around. Dit nummer is zeker niet onvergetelijk met vlakke en fletse zang en melodie en te weinig eigenheid.
Cijfer: 3,5

22. Arie Ribbens - Maar vanavond gaan we stappen
Dit soort carnavalschlagers zijn van alle originaliteit en diepgang gespeend. Kan voor één keertje om dan vergeten te worden.

25. Roger - I Want To Be Your Man
Dit soort zoete en aalgladde standaardballads hoeven voor mij ook niet ... zeker het met lelijk vervormde stem.
Cijfer: 3

26. Nico Haak - Lola, Lola, Lola, Hola
Nico Haak kan wel meer humor brengen dan de meeste andere carnavalsartiesten en het heeft ook nog een leuke piano. Maar een hoogvlieger is dat wel gezellige nummer niet.
Cijfer: 5,5

27. Pink Floyd - On The Turning Away
Nog één van de betere nummers uit het matige A Momentary Lapse of Reason al is het naar Pink Floyd-maatstaven wel standaard en vrij voorspelbaar. Wel knappe gitaarsolo.
Cijfer: 6,5

28. Five Star - Somewhere Somebody
Een nummer dat op zich niet onaardig is maar niet opvallend of memorabel genoeg, het is gewoon meedrijven met wat destijds populair is.
Cijfer: 5

29. The Hooters - Satellite
Een vergeten band maar dit blijft een krachtig, vitaal en onweerstaanbaar nummer met hoog meezinggehalte en aanstekelijke melodie en riff.
Cijfer: 8,5

30. Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive (Official Video)
Dateert uit 1978, was toen een grotere hit. Op zich wel een (vaak gecoverde) evergreen maar zal dit niet in mijn lijst van 1988 opnemen.

In plaats van maandag een keer op zondag mijn 1988 lijst...
Met een nieuwe nummer 1, van Five Star hun 3e bij mij na Find the Time en The Slightest Touch.
Flinke stijgers voor Pebbles, inmiddels in de top 10, en Pink Floyd.
Veel binnenkomers deze week....
Als hoogste de debuutsingle van Bros. When Will I Be Famous, nou ja, dat was heel snel en minstens zo snel was het weer voorbij.




Iets lager de 2e van Debbie Gibson die bij mij in de lijst komt. Only in My Dreams had al op 1 gestaan in 87, nu Shake Your Love op 22. Een echt hi-nrg plaatje, die term kende ik toen nog niet volgens mij. Door haar zelf geschreven wat meteen een mooi verschil oplevert met Tiffany. Niet dat ik wil vergelijken hoor
George Harrison met de opvolger van - bij mij - nummer 2 hit Got My Mind Set on You. When We Was Fab is duidelijk bewerkt door Jeff Lynne wat een behoorlijk elo gehalte aan het nummer geeft. Dat is niet positief bedoeld.
Nog iets lager de nieuwe T'pau. Valentine werd destijds als enige nummer zonder miniparade-verkiezing gebombardeerd tot Speciale Aanbieding van de KRO vanwege de naderende Valentijnsdag. Het nummer is wat minder bombastisch dan China in Your Hand en vind ik ook de minste van de singles tot nu toe maar nog steeds een prima nummer.
Verder naar onderen een nieuwe van het Bad album van Michael Jackson en een duet van Alexander O'Neal die bij mij al goed scoorde met Fake en Criticize. Dit is een ballad.
Daaronder dan Climie Fisher die een van de eerste waren die een single in een hiphopremix en orginele versie uitbrachten. Ik heb er altijd bewust bijgezet dat het om de albumversie ging, of die nou (slow) of (ballad) heette.
Ook nog een nieuwe OMD en Lois Lane met het titelnummer van de film Amsterdamned.

Bros was ook weer niet zo snel voorbij. Toch succesvol geweest van 87 tot en met 91 met in Engeland tien singles bij de beste 12 in de charts waaronder maar liefst zes in de Top 4.

In Nederland bleef het volgens mij bij een paar hits van 1 album. Maar inderdaad, het is geen echte eendagsvlieg.

Volgens mij stond I owe you nothing in 1987 in de onderste regionen van de UK top 100 in poging 1, had hem zelfs in de tips staan vorig jaar bij 1987 maar heeft het toen niet gehaald

Gelijk maar even opgezocht

Twee dikke hits in NL (famous en I owe you nothing) en twee keer onderin de Top 40 blijven hangen waarvan ik zelf dacht dat Drop the Boy een veel grotere hit was

Sorry ranja maar Valentine is alweer op weg naar de top 3 hier, single nummer 3 die meteen doorknalt van Bridge of Spies.
Ik hoop dat ranboy ook de dynamiek waardeert, tot nu toe in 1988 elke week minimaal 2 nieuwelingen , betekent wel dat langdurige hits nu moeite krijgen om te stropen

Hij gaat bij mij ook nog wel hoger komen hoor, maar met m'n smaak van nu komt die wel op de 3e plaats van die 3 singles. Van toen ook wel trouwens.

Het Toto seizoen is weer begonnen. Dat wil zeggen, er is een nieuw Toto album onderweg (The Seventh One).
En dat betekent niet alleen weer een handvol kwaliteitssingles maar gelijk ook de vraag wanneer en bij wie. Ik denk dat The Seventh One één van de meest succesvolle Toto albums in Nederland is geweest.

Hoe dan ook, de Amerikanen beginnen alvast met Pamela, wij zouden enkele weken later volgen met Can't stop loving you. Eigenlijk een betere single maar het één hoeft het ander niet uit te sluiten en bovendien kan ik zelf ook niet meer wachten met brandnieuw Toto vinyl in handen.

Of ze op voorhand hebben gewonnen van Bryan Ferry, Aztec Camera, Steve Winwood & The Cure durf ik niet te zeggen. Winwood is niet bang voor een grondig aangepakte Talking back to the night van zijn gelijknamige album uit 1982. Nu ingezet als remix van een Greatest Hits.

Bryan Ferry komt hier met het hoogtepunt (voor mij) uit zijn carriere. Wat een lekkere single blijft het toch. En dan vooral in de nog vettere 12" uitvoering. Het was toen sowieso de tijd van de weergaloze 12" remixes.

Leuk Kende alleen hun bekendste (neem ik aan) nummer Calling All the Heroes van twee jaar eerder. Maar dit nummer bevalt me ook.

Ja dat is wel hun bekendste, dikke hit ook in de UK (6de plek). Ze vallen qua hokje onder de symfo maar het is meer melodieuze pop met af en toe wat langere symfonische tracks.

Hierbij presenteer ik de zesde gezamenlijke weeklijst van 1988, gedateerd 7 februari 1988. Inmiddels zit de discipline er goed in, want alle 10 lijstjes waren gisteren al binnen (maar je weet natuurlijk nooit of nog iemand een wijziging maakt, of dat er zomaar een nieuwe deelnemer is).

Voor de derde week achter elkaar een nieuwe nummer 1; wat een paar weken terug nog onmogelijk leek, is nu gebeurd: Max neemt de toppositie over van The Bangles! Persoonlijk ben ik er heel blij mij; bij mij staat hij al een tijdje op 1. The Bangles staan trouwens bij mij op 2, dus ik heb niets te klagen .

Deze week maar liefst zes nieuwe entry's, waaronder wel twee re-entry's. Hoogste nieuwe zijn Prince-protégées Wendy & Lisa met een vlot liedje. De Cookie Crew rapt er fel op los in een track van de Beatmasters; de sound klinkt nu toch wel wat gedateerd, vandaar dat je hem niet vaak meer hoort. De band Camouflage was voor mij een nieuwe naam, maar de sound klinkt heel vertrouwd, een beetje Depeche Mode, wat Howard Jones; het is allemaal wel wat gelikt en eigenlijk ook een beetje mosterd na de maaltijd.... Pebbles maakt met Girlfriend een stevige oorwurm; de synths zijn raak, maar uiteindelijk ook wel wat eentonig.
