De top 3 blijft staan, maar Simple Minds en Swing Out Sister maken reuzesprongen.

Op 30 komt Yello binnen, met een atypisch liedje: geen gekke geluidjes maar een soort van ballad. Wel met koorlijntjes die ik ook al in The rhythm divine hoorde.

Op 31 Lullaby van The Cure, in NL hun grootste hit en enige top 10 hit. Mede dankzij de griezelige clip, vermoed ik.

Op 32 The The met één van hun bekendste songs: degelijk maar niet verrassend.

Op 36 David Crosby met een (eind) jaren 80-sausje. Ook niet opzienbarend.

Op 37 dan de eerste single van Roxette. Aardig deuntje, maar dit is hun enige single die mijn top 40 zal halen (en ver komt hij niet), daarna wordt het alleen maar erger.

Bedankt voor dit muzikaal vrolijke nummer. Had er nog nooit van gehoord. Wel veel herhaling van de titel, maar dat drukt de pret nu nog niet.

En ook klinkt fraai.

week 16 van 1989 met geen verandering in de top 4; nadat ik vorige week al veel binnenkomers had nu nog eens 6. Wat ik vorige week zelf niet zag aankomen was dat de hoogste binnenkomer van vorige week nu alweer zakt. Toch wat te hoog binnen of iets waar de lol snel van af was?
Hoogste nieuwe is in elk geval voor Debbie Gibson. Kwamen singles als Out of the Blue en Foolish Beat nog laag binnen en wisten in loop van de tijd de nummer 1 te halen, de nieuwe knalt meteen de top 10 in. De tweede single, en titelnummer, van het 2e album wat weer vrijwel volledig zelf geschreven en geproduceerd is. In de USA deden de singles het iets minder dan die van het debuutalbum, in Nederland werd ze al bijna genegeerd door Hilversum. Deze single haalde nog net tipparade.
Jeff Wayne met Eve of the War, valt weinig over te zeggen. Mogelijk vanwege een cd-release van het album opnieuw uitgebracht?
Metallica met One werd zomaar het Avondspits Steunfonds ingestemd. Nou ja, die draaiden natuurlijk niet die hele 7 minuten. Sowieso zat de nieuwe bijdrage al aan het einde van het programma dus meer dan een minuut of 3 zal er niet overgebleven zijn en ik weet niet meer hoeveel dagen die het volhield. Het was wel een bijzonderheidje, Metallica op radio 3 (afgezien van de hardrockprogramma's van vara en veronica). Jaren later zou het natuurlijk alsnog een hit worden.
Emergency, wtf? Nederlandse hardrock in de beste poedeltradities. Denk Whitesnake en Europe. Maar goed, ik zette het in mijn lijst. Ja ik weet dat Bon Jovi het in deze jaren ook goed deed bij mij... Ik kan je aanraden de clip even aan te klikken, die foto van de band is wel hilarisch (ja ok dat zullen sommige ook van Debie zeggen)
Edie Brickell, ik heb het al gezegd, vorige single What I Am kreeg bepaald niet de credits die het verdiende. Nu is er de opvolger, Circle, ook een prima nummer. Hoe gaat die het dan doen?
Onderaan dan nog Stevie Nicks, eerste single van haar 3e soloalbum. Toch wel erg herkenbaar als Stevie en ook beter dan wat ze op het laatste Fleetwood Mac album als singles had.

Oh in mijn herinnering was het de normale versie die toen op de radio gedraaid werd. Kan me niet herinneren dit ooit eerder gehoord te hebben.

Even oude top 40 blaadjes gezocht, het album was toen inderdaad net op cd verkrijgbaar. In de lijst of in reclame's in het blaadje ook niks over een remix.

Machtige nummers, alle 20. Youssou N'Dour completeert prachtig Peter Gabriel op een joint single, waar Gabriel natuurlijk al eerder z'n liefde voor wereldmuziek prima kan combineren met z'n eigen sound. Hoewel, wie completeert wie?

Ik heb een tijdje gedacht dat het een single was van Peter Gabriel, met Youssou N'Dour aangetrokken als ondersteunende kracht. En dat komt omdat dit nummer van Peter Gabriel voor mij uitsluitend bekend was van het Gabriel verzamelalbum Shaking the tree. Als titel en als nieuwe single om het album te verkopen.
Dat verzamelalbum zou echter pas in 1990 verschijnen.

Wie wat minder eenzijdig kijkt, weet dat het eigenlijk afkomstig is van N'Dours album The Lion, dat wel in 1989 is verschenen. N'Dour heeft dus Gabriel gevraagd en niet andersom. Het zijn maar kleine zaken, maar toch goed om te weten.

Hier nieuwe avonturen uit het land van 1989, week 16 met 10 nieuwe inzendingen waaronder onze vriend Poeha terug op het nest, welcome back.

Vandaag weer eens de zeldzaamheid met een new entry op 1.
Het medicijn dat The Cure is voor de oren doet met Lullaby het boek open van de Disintegration Era (lekker trendy blijven). Een lichtelijk bedtime stoy bizarre meets cabaret meets indie pop met vleugje doem en vergiffenis. Vreemd genoeg is het hun grootste hit in de Nederlandse top 40 en dit spinnenverhaal zal hier nog wel even blijven met al 6 fans. Het kost The Stone Roses wel een trap na naar nummer 6.

Op 11 een postume single van Roy Orbison. She's a mystery to me werd geschreven door de heren Bono en The Edge, deze week zelf te vinden op 5. In 1989 had Orbison nog flink wat grote hits, ook naweeen met The Traveling Wilburies.

Dan op 15 iemand waar ik nog nooit van gehoord had, maar die in 3 lijstjes meedraaid. Wist niet wat te verwachten van Clive Griffin maar het is een redelijk soulvolle poppy uptempo vrolijke single die het in Nederland beter heeft gedaan dan in de UK. Toch kende ik het nummer na beluistering echt niet.

Op 17 wel iemand die ik ken, van Shalamar naar solo voor Jody Watley. Zoals veel popdiva's moet Jody ook of de housey kant op of de swingbeat rnb hoek in, zij gaat voor het laatste en sluit aan bij werk van Paula Abdul, Sheena Easton en Vanessa Williams dat we tot nu toe al gehad hebben. Real love swingt strak door maar Jody lijkt wel wat minder aaibaar dan die andere dames.

Onderaan dan de cover door de Red Hot Chili Peppers van de Stevie Wonder track Higher ground.
De Peppers hebben er een swingend sokkensausje over gegoten dat musician al snel signaleerde. We zijn er vroeg bij want iets in mijn achterhoofd zegt dat de AVRO hier hun radio en televisie tip van maakte in 1990.

Helemaal niet vreemd, want het is simpelweg hun beste nummer Die Nederlanders hadden er toen wel kijk op.

hmmm als ik op de telefoon kijk zie ik een clip van Edie Brickell ipv Lullaby, hoe kan dit?

Gelukkig weten we tegenwoordig meer en beter.
Het wordt, met terugwerkende kracht, een gevalletje "breek me de bek niet open" inzake veel releasedata in Nederland in vergelijk met meestal het moederland van internationale artiesten. Ik kan daar alsnog plaatsvervangende schaamte van krijgen. Maar wie in al dit soort topics op musicmeter meedraait, weet dat we bepaald niet vlug waren inzake releases.

Het hoeft geen kwestie te zijn, dat luisteraars en muziekkopers het niet tijdig oppikten. Het was meestal markttechnisch dat platenmaatschappijen pas besloten iets uit te brengen als naar hun mening de markt daar rijp voor was.

De Peppers zullen bij hun debuut nog volledig onbekend zijn geweest in Nederland, dat spreekt voor zich. Dat moet zich dan ontwikkelen en tegen de tijd dat we er in Nederland van hoorden, we er een beetje warm voor begonnen te lopen, toen moet de Nederlandse platenmaatschappij hebben gedacht "kom laten we Higher Ground ook eens uitbrengen." Lees: "we zullen nu meer exemplaren verkopen dan vorig jaar".

Die gedachtegang hebben ze al gehad sinds begin jaren '60 dus heel vaak loop je er sinds die tijd vrij massaal tegen aan dat releasedata van weken tot maanden en zelfs jaren kunnen verschillen. Dat staat dan nog los van overwegingen (eerst) een ander nummer uit te brengen bij een album release dan elders. Als dat bijvoorbeeld meer geschikt wordt geacht voor de eigen markt.

Gelukkig kunnen we het nu een beetje recht trekken, hoewel voor veel mensen aan de andere kant ook het gevoel ontstaat dat het niet past in de tijd. Zo is het niet goed of het deugt niet

In april 1989 verscheen de Ben Liebrand remix welke vooral in Engeland een flinke hit werd (derde plek in de charts). De single verscheen toen op 7" en op 3" cd-single. Mocht je die laatste nooit gezien hebben dan mag je een keer bij mij komen kijken

Hij gaat in ieder geval bij mij ook charten deze week (waar ik nu mee bezig ben)

Het is weer erg druk in de hitlijst, ik wilde de single Shaking the Tree van Peter Gabriel en zijn Afrikaanse vriend ook binnen laten komen maar daar was gewoon geen plek meer voor. Queen komt hier binnen met een enorme hit welke de band weer laat horen met een ouderwetse gierende rocker.

In zijn zesde week staat Paradise City alweer vijf weken op 1, maar wordt nu zwaar belaagd door Simple Minds en Swing Out Sister. Verder stijgt The Cure 15 plaatsen.

Op 21 komt Kon Kan binnen met I beg your pardon, een opvallende plaat omdat het een sample bevat van Rose garden van Lynn Anderson; ook de titel (I beg your pardon) komt uit Rose garden, maar zit opvallend genoeg geheel niet in I beg your pardon zelf. Overigens is de song voor zeker 90% een origineel product, en enigszins gedateerd.

Op 30 Joe Jackson met een uitstekende single, Nineteen forever (hij was al 35 toen hij dit schreef...).

Op 32 komt De la Soul eindelijk binnen met Me, myself and I (over twee weken komt hij ook in de NL top 40 binnen) met een erg swingende en relaxte rapplaat (dat zie je niet vaak).

Op 37 Robert Palmer met een weinig originele The lion sleeps tonight-achtige song.
