44 jaar na dato lukt het The Cure met A forest wat toen op 6 strandde: mijn nummer 1 bereiken (is nu ook nog mazzel, want er zijn geen echte nummer 1-kandidaten).
Met Messages zijn we wat vroeg, want op 2 juli zal hij pas in mijn historische lijst binnenkomen. En wel op 9 (in een top 40), dat is extreem hoog, zeker voor een nieuwe artiest (de voorgangers kende ik toen niet).
What's another year mag deze week natuurlijk niet ontbreken, ook al zie ik hem verder niet zo veel.
En Dr. Pop met World at war is een heel prettig Nederlands product, inmiddels zelden gedraaid, alleen bij 192TV zie ik hem nog geregeld langs komen.

Een leuke ELO volgens bekend recept, een mooie van Squeeze en een hele mooie Peter Gabriel als binnenkomers, wellicht verrassend maar geen Roxy Music bij mij. Waar het bij Manifesto al aardig aangekondigd werd is het Flesh + Blood album toch wel het echte einde van het ooit zo uitdagende Roxy Music. Het vreemde is overigens dat de twee singles die hierna komen nog best aardig zijn (zeker eentje) en ook wel bij mij zullen gaan charten. Deze behoorlijk vervelende glijer zeker niet.

VAN HALEN’s eerste Nederlandse hit knalt er natuurlijk in als een speer. Heerlijke plaat! Natuurlijk is het al twee jaar oud, maar in mijn lijst mag ie niet ontbreken!

Over en weer over de grote plas blijven er singles van TUSK verschijnen en het rokerige SISTERS OF THE MOON kont bij mij ook weer hoog, zelfs al staan er nog twee andere MAC-singles in de Top 10.

Het gezellige DO YOU FEEL MY LOVE van EDDIE GRANT voelt als een voorloper van het succes van twee jaar later. Leuke plaat!

Tenslotte is daar de synth-pop van OMD, iets minder hoekig dan Electricity, wat meer gestroomlijnd.

Helaas geen tijd voor nieuwe binnenkomers deze week.

De 'reuring' die ik verwachtte vorige week is vrijwel uitgebleven. Misschien omdat het lijstje van Marzipaintree dezelfde bleef als de week er voor.

Maar de verschillen zijn heel groot en niet zomaar weggepoetst. Japan en The Cure steken ver boven iedereen uit. De concurrentie, de nieuwe binnenkomers, lijken niet in staat de gevestigde orde uit te roken en weg te krijgen. De muziekwetten schrijven voor dat dat eens gaat gebeuren. Maar op deze wijze worden de grote hits geboren: langdurig gebrek aan de juiste concurrentie.

Ik zag de klassieker Runnin' with the devil van Van Halen verschijnen in een lijstje. In de basis geheel terecht. Dat bijna niemand deze grote hit óók in zijn lijstje zet heeft hoofdzakelijk er mee te maken dat wij deze Amerikaanse hit al in 1978 in onze lijsten hadden staan. Het werd best een grote hit. Maar zo kort geleden kies ik ook niet voor het opnieuw noteren van het nummer in mijn lijst.

Misschien volgende week dan een schoonmaak! Ik zie in ieder geval al een aantal nummers die het zouden moeten kunnen gaan doen. Maar je weet het nooit.

Er blijft een enorme keuze, als het gaat om nieuw plaatwerk. Het is een enorme stroom aan uitgebrachte singles en dat betekent dat de lijst zo aangenaam mogelijk kan worden samengesteld. Bepaald geen vullertjes en, helaas, voor sommige bands tegenvallende resultaten.

De man die zoveel indruk maakte in het voorgaande jaar, Gary Numan, is terug met een nieuwe single. We are glass gaat moeiteloos door op de weg die door Numan is ingeslagen. En dus mag een nieuw groot succes worden verwacht.
Dat geldt inmiddels ook al voor het album van het Electric Light Orchestra met Olivia Newton John. Ik dacht uit het hoofd dat het allemaal met de titelsong begon. Maar inmiddels zijn I'm Alive en Magic uitgebracht en moeten we op Xanadu blijkbaar nog even wachten.

Hoewel een groot succes kreeg het Electric Light Orchestra niet de hoogste waarderingen van het eigen kritische publiek.
Roxy Music is weer terug en zal het de komende jaren druk krijgen. Veel hits. Mooi. Alleen zo hemeltergend fraai als de eerste jaren zou het niet meer woorden, het is meer stilistisch mooi aan het worden.
Een onverwacht mooie single uit het kamp van Gerry Rafferty, terwijl Kayak nog steeds met een schuin oog mogelijk succes in de Verenigde Staten in de gaten houdt. Ook zeker niet slecht.

Kan er nog worden aangeschoven in deze drukbezette topic?

Ik twijfelde wel even of ik Duchess zou noteren, want ik kende het alleen als een albumtrack en heb het destijds (of later) nooit op de radio gehoord. Maar het is een bescheiden UK top 40-hit geweest, dus vooruit. Het is een grandioos nummer, ingeleid door subtiel drumcomputerwerk, waarna een meeslepende song volgt met een tekst over de opkomst en ondergang van een zangeres, met zoveel ijzersterke lyrics, zo krachtig gezongen, ik kan hier nog steeds ontroerd van worden. Dan weet je het alvast voor de komende weken .

De bolero van Thijs van Leer is een uiterst curieuze bewerking van Ravel, met een discobeat en oosterse invloeden, en op het eind ineens zelfs een Arabische zangeres, althans, dat heb ik 40 jaar gedacht, maar nu denk ik dat het Thijs zelf is...

GENESIS wat de klok slaat bij de binnenkomers.

Maar de hoogste is van THE BEAT met de hoekige ska van MIRROR IN THE BATHROOM. Geweldig nummer dat vooral in Nederland meer had mogen doen.

Dat laatste geldt ook voor PETER GABRIEL en z’n maatjes van GENESIS.
NO SELF CONTROL is een van de vele hoogtepunten van (MELT).
DUCHESS is verder wat moeilijk los te zien van Behind The Lines van het bijbehorende album DUKE, maar kwalitatief is het natuurlijk onverslijtbaar.

E.L.O.’s sound is ten tijde van de XANADU soundtrack behoorlijk gladgestreken, maar ik blijf er toch een zwak voor hebben en het briljante Time-album zou nog volgen.

ROXY MUSIC’s sound is eveneens behoorlijk vervlakt met FLESH + BLOOD en OVER YOU. Eveneens heel aardig, maar deze sound zou zich beter doorontwikkelen met Avalon.
