Van het ondergewaardeerde album van dezelfde naam hebben we THIN LIZZY’s CHINATOWN.
Dit is simpelweg puike rockmuziek!

Dan ook een zwik geweldige ‘nieuwe’ new wave en ska.

SQUEEZE vervolmaakt hun sound met een snuifje soul met PULLING MUSCLES… Perfecte pop.

De ska komt dus van THE SPECIALS met een filosofie waarin de meesten van ons zich in kunnen vinden; working for the RAT RACE.
Heerlijk wegtikkend in het juiste jaargetij.

GANG OF FOUR schijnt met de heerlijk militant klinkende TRAINS.
Dit album moet ik nog eens nader beluisteren.

Van SPLODGE… weet ik bijna niets, maar SIMON TEMPLER (een personage van de serie The Saint) blijft een heerlijke postpunk plaat.

Ik neem aan dat Zondag wordt bedoeld...

Ik hoop het niet....

Waar Foto van vroeger heerlijke zoete melancholie is, is Zondag vervelend, dreinerig en een beetje ordinair.

Dat kan, maar Foto van Vroeger is een albumtitel en de titeltrack is, voor zover bekend, niet op single gezet.

Toevallig hoorde ik afgelopen It's only just begun ergens langskomen, en wat heeft die song een positieve uitstraling!

Daar zijn de meningen over verdeeld, hij doet het hier boven verwachting.

Ik vind het een van zijn beste singles, heerlijk uplifting.

Het album (Met Je Ogen Dicht) heeft geen titeltrack , maar je hebt wel gelijk dat Foto van Vroeger niet op single is uitgebracht.

Het was overigens het best verkochte album in Nederland in 1980. Aldus Wikipedia.
Wel opmerkelijk met slechts twee singles.

Moet zo de deur uit, maar met het oog op de deadline bij deze alvast de top 20.

Echo & The Bunnymen pakt de eerste plaats en ik moet nog maar zien of er dit jaar een nog betere jangle pop-single voorbij gaat komen.

‘Geen overwinning is er en geen nederlaag’ vind ik overigens een geweldige vondst.

Omdat het Goed is.
In het ouderlijk huis werd de cassette grijs gedraaid en de verzamelaar Vallen En Opstaan, die ik heb, lijkt het als centraal punt in z’n carriére te gebruiken, alsof Rob het zelf als z’n hoogtepunt beschouwt.
Vijf(!) nummers zijn er van geselecteerd.

Dank allen weer voor alle lijsten voor week 20 over het jaar 1980!
50tracks, ranboy, Justus18, pureshores, herman, Marzipaintree (slaat nog een weekje over), kaztor, johan de witt, Poeha, vigil, nico1616, Martijn Jonkers en Gerdav

Uiteraard nog even een vriendelijke groet en sterkte aan Marzipaintree.

Iedereen kan zien wat er met de lijst is gebeurd: heel veel punten zijn bovenin weggehaald en onderin terecht gekomen.
We hadden ooit vijf nummers met meer dan 100 punten nu één.
Je ziet ook dat met een gelijk aantal punten Change daalt van 11 naar 14.

En dan ben ik blij voor Olivia Newton John, haar truc is inderdaad Magic te noemen. Ze stond na alle Grease releases op het toppunt van haar roem, alles wat ze zong veranderde in goud. Of het nu met John Travolta is of met het Electric Light Orchestra.

I'm alive staat ook al te kloppen aan de poort.
Genesis scoort met een nieuwe song van Duke en Roxy Music komt eindelijk binnen met Over You. Je ziet toch dat het succes van de beginjaren een beetje aan het afnemen is, niet in de laatste plaats door veranderingen in het oorspronkelijke geluid. Geldt voor beide bands. Hoewel ze respectievelijk 11 en 8 jaar oud zijn. Toen werd dat als een hele tijd gezien.

En dan ben ik zelf weer eens langzaam met een nieuwe naam, zijnde Wah! Heat. Ik beloof dat ik het volgende week zal meenemen. Muzikaal niets mis mee, maar blijkbaar vond ik de vocalen bij een eerdere beluistering minder. Net een nieuwe band (1979) en uiteindelijk wordt er niet eens veel op gezongen.

Verrassend dat Olivia Newton-John de lijst haalt. Die heb ik na 1 keer luisteren afgevoerd, al kan het veel slechter. Ik zal hem nog eens opzetten.

The Go-Go's is de band van Belinda Carlisle zoals iedereen hier waarschijnlijk wel weet. Ken ze niet echt, terwijl ik volgens mij wel een plaat van ze heb (op de nog te luisteren stapel). Dit is wel een hele fijne binnenkomer in letterlijke en figuurlijke zin.

Aurra is een Amerikaanse groep met een hier wel heel swingend disconummer (heerlijke baslijn mn.) op het Salsoul label.

Siouxsie en Gary behoeven geen toelichting. Na Complex gelukkig weer een wat betere single van Gary. Martha and the Muffins hadden een van de hits van het jaar met Echo Beach. De opvolger klinkt ook prettig, maar helaas lang niet zo memorabel.

The Particles is een Australische twee pop band en heb ik deze week ontdekt, net als het liedje van de Nits, dat ik stukken beter vind dan de vorige single. Ben benieuwd waar het plafond van beide nummers gaat liggen.

DEVO en Squeeze worden hoog aangeslagen op RYM (beide top 100), maar de kwartjes zijn nog niet gevallen. Hopelijk komt het nog.

U2 had met dat Tick Tock een aardig voorgevoel of zou het ergens anders over zijn gegaan. Waarschijnlijk wel. Ze doen voorzichtige stapjes de goede kant op, ik weet alleen niet of ik kan voorkomen dat volgende week de stevige nieuwe Helpless van de meer ervaren Wishbone Ash hoger staat.

Ik heb One love van Sniff 'n the tears altijd als ouder beschouwd dan Driver's seat. Inmiddels weten we dus dat dat niet waar is. Ik had het singletje uit de uitverkoopbak en heb er toen lang plezier van gehad.

Dan leuke singles maar de erkende namen Elvis Costello, Madness, Stranglers en de Eagles (wel mooi nummer) zullen volgende week echt aan de bak moeten om resultaten te gaan boeken. Het is druk genoeg.

Hoogste nieuwe is Hollywood Seven, de puike solohit van Alides Hidding die later furore maakte met Time Bandits. Het nummer was nog NCRV Favorietschijf op 14 juni 1980. Een week later was de schijf voor Ian Hunter die ook mijn lijst binnenkomt met een heerlijk typisch begin jaren 80 Amerikaans pop/rocknummer. Tot slot komt ook Billy Ocean binnen met Stay The Night. Die had ik al jaren op een dance classics cd staan, maar ging wat langs me heen. Totdat in 2001 het radiohitje Easy Love van Lady uitkwam waar een sample in zat van Stay The Night. Toen ben ik het nummer pas gaan draaien en waarderen. Deze week komt ie binnen op 20 in m’n lijst.

Na 6 binnenkomers heb ik er de rem op gezet, het aanbod is werkelijk gigantisch!

SIOUXSIE’s CHRISTINE vind ik een parel, wellicht hun beste single.
Het heeft een geweldige sfeer.

Ook U2’s 11 O’CLOCK durf ik voorzichtig hun eerste echte klassieker te noemen. Hier staat het nog wat in de grondverf, maar drie jaar later, getuige het Live Under A Blood Red Sky- album, is dit uitgegroeid tot een knaller.

We verwelkomen deze week ook de eigenlijke lead-single van QUEEN’s THE GAME, ofwel de single die met de release van het album gepaard ging. Met gepaste trots laat de band hier zien dat ze ook met synths nog de baas is!

ONE LOVE is een fijne opvolger van Driver’s Seat. SNIFF’s album FICKLE HEART is trouwens best de moeite waard.

Dat de nieuwe STRANGLERS niet hoger binnen komt heeft niets te maken met de kwaliteit, maar meer met het aanbod van deze week. Tekstueel bezien is dit al een voorloper van het THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO THE MENINBLACK- album.

De hekkesluiter deze week is de hele fijne single van SOLUTION. Inderdaad echt een heerlijk optimistische plaat.

Leuk dat je die single zo hoog waardeert. Het verhaal achter Hollywood Seven heeft een lange voorgeschiedenis. Het werd midden jaren zeventig al geschreven door het songschrijversduo Gloria Sklerov en Harry Lloyd, dat al vaker hits leverde die door Nederlandse artiesten werden omarmd. Zo pikte Lucifer hun song House for sale op, met bekend resultaat.

Net als bij House for sale heeft de tekst van Hollywood Seven een tragische lading: jong meisje verhuist naar Los Angeles in de hoop op een filmcarrière. Ze verblijft al die tijd in een motel waar de song zijn titel aan ontleent. Daar blijft ze maar wachten op dat ene telefoontje dat haar een glansrol zou kunnen bezorgen, maar dat komt nooit. Om in leven te kunnen blijven, prostitueert ze zich (dat is tenminste mijn interpretatie van 'she started bringing strangers in'). Dat gaat een keer goed mis en uiteindelijk keert ze roemloos terug naar haar geboorteplaats Omaha.

Sklerov en Lloyd schreven het nummer in eerste instantie voor Terry Jacks, maar die nam het nooit op. De Australische zanger Jon English was de eerste die het opnam en hij scoorde er 'down under' in 1976 een hit mee. Maar die versie was een midtempo softrocksong, met de piano als hoofdinstrument en een veel trager tempo. Hidding en producer Pim Koopman maakten er een synthi-discosong van, in een jaar waarin dat genre nog maar nauwelijks was uitgevonden. Het had het begin van een solocarrière kunnen zijn voor de Drentse zanger, maar hij koos ervoor om een band samen te stellen. Eigenlijk ligt zijn versie van Hollywood seven al aardig in het verlengde van de muziek die hij met de Time Bandits zou maken.

Zijn versie inspireerde de Duitse schlagerzangeres Juliane Werding in hetzelfde jaar tot een Duitstalige versie, getiteld Grossstadtlichter. Die werd in haar eigen land geen grote hit, maar het betekende voor haar wel de omschakeling van Schlager-achtige nummers naar popmuziek, en dat zou haar in de jaren tachtig en negentig geen windeieren leggen.
