Mijn tiplijst is inmiddels langer dan de TOP40, zo groot is het aanbod van goede muziek. Deze week heb ik onder andere gekozen voor een paar stevige binnenkomers, maar ook voor Lenny heb ik een plekje gevonden.
Over ruimtegebrek gesproken, op 45cat wordt opgemerkt dat het niet zo 'n geslaagd idee is om op de B-kant van Sanctuary 10 minuten muziek te proppen op een 7" met 45rpm.

Hopelijk is Marzipaintree weer snel op de been!

En dan valt deze week toch wel enorm de verdeeldheid op en dat beeld slaat gelijk toe na Messages van O.M.D. Over dat nummer zijn we het wel over eens.

Maar over hoe het vervolg er uit moet gaan zien zijn we het minder eens, steeds minder punten voor de nummers 2 t/m 10. En dan kun je met kleine verschillen behoorlijk wat hoger of lager staan.

Terecht constateert Justus dat de keuze enorm is. Dat klopt en ik denk dat dat voor een belangrijk deel ook verantwoordelijk is voor de 'verschillen in de muzikale opinie'. Ik eindigde de puntentelling met uiteindelijk 122 verschillende songs en dan waren er nog 32 van de week er voor weggehaald.

Maar ik denk dat Peter Gabriel, Olivia Newton John en Genesis daar maling aan zullen hebben. Ze hebben een hoge plaats met slechts een redelijk aantal punten.

Waar zijn de hits? Ik zie in ieder geval bij sommige users een nieuwe Queen en Joy Division.
Of misschien wordt het wel Christine, de nieuwe van Siouxsie and the Banshees. Ik heb de cd Kaleidoscope, ook die vorige hit staat daar op. En ik ga wat opbiechten. Ik heb hem na een aantal keren draaien weer te koop gezet.

Ik ga hem uit mijn te koop doos halen, ik geloof toch dat ik daar Siouxsie te weinig recht mee heb gedaan...

In Engeland werd de six-pack uitgebracht van The Police. Met vijf eerdere singles en één die nog niet eerder was verschenen.
Per slot van rekening moet de schoorsteen bij The Police ook roken.
Vreemd genoeg bleef het uitgeven van de six-pack beperkt tot het Verenigd Koninkrijk. En dat kwam, omdat Bring on the Night daar niet was uitgebracht. Dat nummer zit ook niet bij de six-pack.

The bed's too big without you is alweer het laatste nummer van The Police oude stijl (eerste twee albums). Later dit jaar volgt een nieuw album, eentje met wisselende kritieken.

Dan bestond Deep Purple al niet meer sinds 1976, zanger Ian Gillan heeft solo en met een eigen band nog heel wat albums in de tussenliggende fase volgezongen. Uiteindelijk blijkt hij een echte overlever: Deep Purple met Ian Gillan (78) is nog steeds alive and kicking met heavy Deep Purple materiaal als in hun beste dagen. In juli van dit jaar is er weer een nieuw album.

En dan het pareltje van de week. Een opmerkelijke Irene Cara. Hoewel Fame pas begin 1983 in de Nederlandse hitlijsten verscheen, een nummer één hit werd, was Fame in de VS al veel eerder verschenen. Dat geeft misschien een heel raar tijdsbeeld om het nu in de lijst te hebben staan maar ik vond het het wel waard. Vooral toen ik een versie vond van vijf en een halve minute op Spotify. Eigenlijk duurt de 1983 single origineel iets van drie en een halve minuut.

De single vond ik, bij de hernieuwde kennismaking, krachtig, vrolijk, stevig en uitdagend. Dus ik ben benieuwd. Ik zag dat in 1983 Fame bij mij, in mijn lijstje van toen, reikte tot uiteindelijk de 15e plek. En ik was toen strenger in de leer. Eens kijken of daar een verbetering in kan zitten.

Die vijfminutenversie is gewoon de albumversie, van de gelijknamige soundtrack. Die verscheen bij ons ook op de 12 inch single, maar in Engeland verscheen er een echte extended mix van ruin 7 minuten. Weliswaar zo'n aan elkaar geplakte sequence zonder nieuwe instrumentatie, maar toch aardig gedaan.
In de VS werd het in 1980 al meteen een hit (#4), maar in het VK pas in 1982 (3 weken #1), en bij ons begin '83 (ook #1). Gek dat het bij ons pas drie jaar later een hit werd. Al was er wel een aanwijsbare oorzaak: het was de themasong (zij het door iemand anders gezongen) van de succesvolle tv-serie, die inmiddels naar aanleiding van de film was ontwikkeld. En dus kregen we ook hitsingles van the Kids of Fame in onze charts.

Het verborgen pareltje dat ik dan weer hoorde op de Fame-soundtrack, is het nummer Out here on my own. Een klein gehouden pianoliedje dat heel fraai gezongen wordt door haar. Het werd een jaar later in Nederland een klein hitje in de uitvoering van het toen ongeveer tien(!)jarige zangeresje Nikka Costa, die zich pas veel later tot een serieuze R&B-diva zou ontwikkelen. Maar dat kinderlijke stemmetje van Costa past voor mijn gevoel niet zo goed bij dat nummer. Eigenlijk had de uitvoering van Cara wel de hitstatus verdiend.

Ze klinkt behoorlijk als Donna Summer, deze Irene Cara. Ik weet dat dat ik dacht dat Summer het zong toen ik het nummer voor het eerst hoorde. Jong gestorven trouwens (63), en ze leefde de laatste jaren van haar leven als een kluizenaar, hoewel dat ook te maken kan hebben gehad met haar angst om besmet te raken met het Covid-virus.

Bestonden The Hollies in 1980 nog? Jawel; ze slaan met een prachtige song mijn tiplijstje over. Verder heb ik deze week gebruikt om het tiplijstje fors in te korten, waarbij er veel nummers gesneuveld zijn. De andere binnenkomers hebben de schifting overleefd.
Dan vraag ik nog wat aandacht voor mijn nummer 1, een dubbele A-kant single van Boney M die hier nauwelijks aan bod is gekomen. My Friend Jack vind ik verrassend sterk. Ik kende het nummer al wel van The Smoke, die er in1967 een nummer-2 hit hadden in Duitsland. In het topic de singles van 50 jaar geleden haalde het 6 weken mijn TOP40 met als HP20.
In 1980 werkte bandlid Zeke Lund als sound engineer bij Frank Farian. Vandaar dat het nummer op het repertoire van Boney M is komen te staan. De versie van Boney M kende ik tot nu toe nog niet, maar vind ik veel sterker dan het origineel. En tegelijk is het ook het beste nummer dat ik van Boney M ken.

Een beetje pas op de plaat deze week met veel wachtenden aan de poort.

JUDAS PRIEST en IRON MAIDEN zorgen samen voor een hardrock-injectie, de eerste met het onsterfelijke BREAKING THE LAW en de tweede met de punky kraker SANCTUARY dat volgens mij alleen op de Amerikaanse versie van het titelloze debuut-album staat.

En THE BED’S TOO BIG…, was dat niet die mono-mix dat ook op Message In A Box staat? Ik weet wel dat Greatest Hits de album-versie van REGATTA DE BLANC bevat, maar of dat ook de single van die six-pack was? Enfin, wat mij betreft een betere single-keuze dan Bring On The Night die laatst verscheen.

Toch weer een tijdje geleden dat ik zo'n tof nummer heb ontdekt als dat van Ronnie Bond. Die naam zei me niets. Maar hij is dus de oud-drummer van The Troggs geweest (overleden in 1992).

En bij Zaine Griff moets ik meteen aan David Bowie denken, qua uiterlijk dan. Had zo een broer van hem kunnen zijn. Ook Ashes And Diamonds is een fijne ontdekking. Klinkt zoals de jaren 80 zich muzikaal zouden gaan ontwikkelen. Heeft wat weg van Ultravox, vind ik zelf. Twee nummers van het opvolgende album Figures (1982) zojuist beluisterd. De titeltrack klinkt prima, maar zeker Flowers (met Kate Bush) klinkt goed. Toch maar eens gaan verdiepen in zijn werk, ook al doen de gemiddeldes vermoeden dat het wel eens tegen zou kunnen gaan vallen.
Ik zie ook dat hij in 1984 nog samen heeft gewerkt met Gary Numan.

Ashes to ashes, diamonds and dogs?

De eerste daarvan gaat later dit jaar nog een sensatie creëeren in m’n lijst.

Wat een gat zit er tussen de nummers 6 en 7!
Rare stijging ook voor Change.
OMD staat natuurlijk soeverein bovenaan en heeft geen enkele concurrentie te duchten.

Terwijl er vier behoorlijke oudjes uit de lijst zijn 'gezet'.
Siouxsie zagen we natuurlijk aankomen.
Sommige bands vonden die lage punten niet erg. Zo schrijven Sisters of the Moon en Against the Wind toch nog geschiedenis.

Olivia Newton John en het Electric Light Orchestra blijven omhoog gaan, en dat staat dan nog los van het feit dat inmiddels hun gezamenlijke megahit Xanadu inmiddels op ons is losgelaten. Gouden tijden voor Jeff Lynne.

En dan zie ik dat Marzipaintree niet meer heeft ingelogd sinds 4 mei. Ik hoop maar dat hij snel herstelt, al zal dit bericht dan vermoedelijk niet wordt gelezen als hij niet kan inloggen. Wie enig idee heeft hoe het met hem gaat, laat het graag weten!

Ik begreep van hemzelf dat hij bij een eerdere afwezigheid zijn mailadres had achtergelaten bij Justus18 en herman.

Hij is plotseling ziek geworden en werkt aan zijn herstel, maar weet niet hoe lang dat gaat duren. Ik denk dat we dat af moeten wachten.

Het kan, Phil Lynott met Thin Lizzy en solo op één en twee. Het zal maar gebeuren! Maar het lijkt er op dat Lynott momenteel aan de top van zijn kunnen zit.

Toch ontkomt hij er ook niet aan, dat ik de nieuwe nummers bijna allemaal zou willen scharen onder pop/rock, eerder dan rock. Mooie luisterpop. Goede songs.
Alleen The Damned ontwijkt die classificering door opbeurende stevige cover van Jefferson Airplane.

Ik had overigens zowel Christopher Cross als Nazareth begin 1981 in mijn hitlijst (van destijds) staan. Leuke singles maar juni 1980 associeer ik er niet mee. Toegegeven, beide kwamen uit de uitverkoopbak.

Beetje schoonmaak met aanstormende zomerhits. Xanadu zal wel een poosje rondhangen, wat ten koste van Magic kan gaan.

Christopher Cross komt met een ietwat gezapige ballad, die ik wel mooi vind, maar je absoluut niet te vaak moet horen, associeer dit nummer altijd met Bird of paradise, wat hetzelfde effect op mij heeft.

Maywood. Is dit Cult? Is dit Nederlandse trots? Is dit wat Dua Lipa in 1980 zou uitbrengen?
Het zit gewoon enorm catchy in elkaar, denk niet dat die dames toen doorhadden dat het nummer een beetje een classic zou worden met hun C&A truien.

Siouxsie drupt ook binnen, maar dit is geen happy house.

Na 1 week op 1 wordt Messages alweer afgelost, maar dat kon ook niet anders, met Duchess in de achtervolging.

Ik behoor tot de generatie die Love will tear us apart leerde kennen door de cover van Paul Young. Later hoorde ik pas het origineel, en die klonk veel ruwer en primitiever, maar dat rammelige heeft ook wel zijn charme...

Sailing van Chr. Cross associeer ik ook met 1981, maar ik volg hier maar de meerderheid. Nog meer moeite heb ik met Versailles van White Soxx dat ik ergens zag verschijnen: heel erg 1981. Daar moet ik nog even over nadenken.

Hier gaat het wat mis en schuif ik alles naar boven... Hier corrigeer je jezelf weer, wat erg prettig is met 20 nummers in je lijst!
