De aanwezigheid van Mark Knopfler is ongetwijfeld te horen op PHIL LYNOTT’S KING’S CALL.
De man bleek een muzikale duizendpoot te zijn, en je zou het niet zeggen; z’n begeleidingsband op de solo-platen is gewoon Thin Lizzy, die deze week overigens de top bezetten.

Franse prog krijgen we in de vorm van WHITE SOXX’ VERSAILLES.
Met een beetje fantasie hoor je hier zo Yes of Jon & Vangelis in.
Geweldige plaat!

Tenslotte is ELO weer snel terug in de lijst met OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN en de megahit XANADU.
De film zou genadeloos floppen.
De soundtrack was echter een groot succes.

En de aanhouder wint, als je maar lang genoeg probeert. En dat geldt dan voor de nieuwe binnenkomers van Boney M (voor het eerst sinds?), Thin Lizzy en de Dead Kennedys.
Niets mis met de songs uiteraard maar als je al een week of 6 aandringt zonder hele grote sprongen naar voren (het kan natuurlijk altijd nog) is niet te verwachten dat het gaat leiden tot hoge noteringen.

Anders is het, als je de vorige week pas verscheen in de eerste lijstjes en de week daarna binnenkomt op 7. Zoals Xanadu. Dan kan worden verwacht dat er toch wel een aardig hit gaat worden gescoord. Afwachten maar.
Overigens heeft Jeff Lynne zelf ook een keer Xanadu ingezongen. Zodat het dan in ieder geval óók een echt Electric Light Orchestra song is en de E.L.O. fanaten het nummer zonder gêne als ware het een originele E.L.O.-song kunnen afspelen.

En dan zijn er voor het eerst verliespunten voor Messages. Dat is altijd het begin van het einde. Nog twee keer -18 en Magic nog twee keer + 3 en we hebben over twee weken een nieuwe nummer één. Of we moeten opeens nog andere onverwachte nummers uit de hoge hoed toveren. Ik ben de maand juni 1980 nog even langs gegaan. En ik sluit niets uit...

Ik moet zeggen, heb week 24 al even vooruit gewerkt (vrije, maar helaas ook regenachtige dag) en het is lang geleden dat er zoveel nieuwe toffe nummers op de shortlist stonden. Zeer benieuwd welke de volgende lijst zullen binnenkomen.

Om van het najaar van 1980 maar te zwijgen, in mijn herinnering een van de beste singleperiodes ooit. Het wordt dringen aan de top

Het was even bladeren en voor mijn tijd hier, maar dat was bijna 3 jaar geleden met Ma Baker.

Nog maar even de hele lijst, want ik zie dat Love Will Tear Us Apart er eerder vanavond is uitgevallen.

Tarzan's Nuts is blijkbaar een Nederlands singletje van Madness, met Nightboat to Cairo op de b-kant. Leuk tussendoortje, wel begrijpelijk dat dit geen wereldwijde single was.

Dat kan, inderdaad.
Phil’s Solo In Soho album werd tegelijk opgenomen met Chinatown. Hetzelfde gebeurde een jaar later met Thin Lizzy’s Renegade en The Phil Lynott Album (dat overigens in 1982 uitkwam. Verkooptechnisch wellicht verstandiger).
Wat ‘te soft’ werd bevonden voor Thin Lizzy werd solo uitgebracht.
Het is dus eigenlijk allemaal Thin Lizzy, al dan niet in samenwerking met Knopfler of Midge Ure.

King’s Call werd in 1987, anderhalf jaar na z’n verscheiden, alsnog een kleine Top 40-hit.
Wat was daar de aanleiding voor, vraag ik me af?



Ja, naar aanleiding van ELO’s Flashback box set.
Een vooruitgang vind ik het niet, eerlijk gezegd.
Het klinkt als latere stijl ELO zonder dat het ook iets aan het origineel toevoegt.

Een aardig druk weekend voor de boeg dus nu maar alvast de lijst, al zittend aan een espresso zonder nintendo duiken we de nieuwe lijst in ......

De grootste verrassing zit um in de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer van Dschinghis Khan met Rom, al vermoed ik dat er weinig mensen met me mee zullen gaan met dit nummer

Het nummer begint als een soort van filmisch uit de tijd van Ben Hur en eindigt in vrolijke klanken in de geest van Michel Fugain Et Le Big Bazar.

Bij de eerste klanken van Saxon met 747 (Strangers In The Night) zit je er eigenlijk direct in, onvervalste hardrock uit die tijd, een heerlijk plaatje en de mannen rocken er nog lekker op los anno 2024.

Drivin' My Life Away van Eddie Rabbitt is een nummer dat altijd kan op welk tijdstip van de dag dan ook, het is een lekkere meezinger en verveelt eigenlijk nooit.

Ook het vermelden meer dan waard is de nieuwe single van Ultravox die zich zouden ontpoppen als een "typische' jaren 80 band.
In Nederland kwam de doorbraak met het overbekende nummer Vienna (1981)

In dit topic moet je niets uitsluiten
Ik heb vorig jaar (1979) Moskau toch al een tijdje in mijn top 20 vermeld gehad.

En daarnaast een zeer genietbare Raymond van 't Groenewoud.

Altijd al gek geweest van nummers zoals (in dit geval) Fame, Footloose, Maniac, dus Irene Cara kon niet langer ontbreken. ELO's 70's nummers bevielen me al vanaf het moment van ontdekking (de platenkast van pa). Xanadu kwam daar dan nog eens heel fijntjes achteraan gehobbeld. En in het tijdperk van de flashmobs werd deze ook steevast gebruikt. Heb veel van die clips toch vaak bekeken de afgelopen jaren.

En dan toch weer een onverwachts pareltje ontdekt in de vorm van Boz Scaggs' JoJo. Da's het voordeel als je nog maar relatief weinig albums uit die tijd integraal kent. Dacht dat ik met zijn Silk Degrees (1976) album zijn hoogtepunt wel te pakken had...en toen kwam JoJo om de hoek zetten. Weer die heerlijke laidback funk. En dan zag ik dat er al eerder (maart) een single van het Middle Man album is verschenen: Breakdown Dead Ahead (heb ik het in ieder geval toch nog maar even vernoemd). Lekkere uptempo track.

Voor mijn beleving zijn we met Versailles wel een jaartje te vroeg, maar het heeft ook geen zin om straks in mijn eentje de plaat te noteren. White Soxx is letterlijk een one-hitwonder, dit is hun enige single, en Nederland is het enige land waar het succes had, en daar bleef het nog net in de tipparade steken (op 2). (Ja, volgens de preciezen onder ons is het dus ook hier geen hit geweest.) Maar wel jarenlang in de Top 2000, en ik ben duidelijk niet de enige die het een wonderlijk mooie plaat vind.
Bijna even mooi vind ik Waterfalls, zo'n makkelijk vergeten pareltje van Paul McCartney waarmee hij in deze jaren rijkelijk strooide, ook al werden het geen (grote) hits. Heerlijk om mee te galmen.
Cities als single kende ik niet, maar het is wel een sterke albumtrack, dus alsnog in mijn top 20.
