Toen ik bij 50tracks Taurus zag verschijnen met Meadow (See you again) dacht ik: He, die band ken ik, maar ik heb toen een ander liedje op de radio gehoord en in mijn top 40 gehad, Don't leave me here. Maar voordat ik hem afluisterde, bekroop mij al het voorgevoel dat ik hem destijds onder een verkeerde titel genoteerd had, en dat bleek ook zo... Destijds kwam hij bij mij tot 16. Dat was al een hele prestatie, want ik denk dat ik hem maar een enkele keer toen gehoord heb. En het wonderlijke, het stukje refrein met Don't leave me here, don't leave me now kon ik al die tijd nog reproduceren! Nu eindelijk, na 44 jaar teruggehoord, en het was nog veel sterker dan ik me had voorgesteld; zelden een plaat gehoord met zoveel gejaagdheid, en dat ook nog in toenemende mate. Helaas, hierna heb ik nooit meer iets van deze Nederlandse symfoband gehoord.

Hoe je je in users kunt vergissen
ook al ken je ze niet persoonlijk

Ha, de nazomer van 1980 bracht ons onder meer de derde single van Diesel. Ik neem aan dat hitgeleerden als jullie het verhaal wel kennen, maar het is toch aardig om even in te zoomen op de details van dit bijzondere hitsucces.
Nou ja, hitsucces... in eerste instantie mocht het nieuwe bandproject van ex-Kayakdrummer Pim Koopman - die rond die tijd een behoorlijke status als producer aan het opbouwen was (o.a. Maywood, Pussycat, Time Bandits, Patricia Paay) - mondjesmaat één, vervolgens twee, en toen dat kleine hitjes werden, het album Watts in a tank opnemen.
Ze spendeerden de helft van hetb opnamebudget aan één nummer: Sausalito Summernight. Maar toch stond platenmaatschappij Polydor er op dat eerst Alibi als (geflopte) derde single werd uitgebracht. Zodat Sausalito Summernight - op de Nederlandse single- en albumhoes aanvankelijk verkeerd gespeld als Sausolito - uiteindelijk de vierde single van Diesel werd. In eerste instantie werd het in Nederland net zo'n klein hitje als de eerste twee singles (drie weken genoteerd, met #33 als hoogste positie in de top 40).

Maar toen gebeurde er iets wonderlijks: het nummer werd opgepikt aan de andere kant van de grote plas, met het inmiddels bekende resultaat: een 25ste plek in de Billboard Hot 100, zelfs nummer één in Canada en een langdurige afspeelstatus op de classic rock-stations. Aan de hand van dat onverwachte internationale succes werd het nummer najaar '81 opnieuw uitgebracht in Nederland, maar ditmaal bleef het nummer steken in de tipparade.

Pim Koopman overleed in 2009 aan een hartstilstand, maar zijn website is nog online en wordt bijgehouden. Op deze pagina gaat hij uitgebreid in op opkomst en ondergang van Diesel en natuurlijk het memorabele hitsucces. Achteraf is het natuurlijk makkelijk praten, maar ik snap wel waarop dit nummer het zo goed deed op de Amerikaanse radio. Het heeft een riff uit duizenden, een dito gitaarsolo (luister eens naar de lange versie) en het tempo plus de 'wat zeurderige melodie van de coupletten' (in de woorden van gitarist Rob Vunderink) maken het ideaal voor een autoritje in een cabrio over de Golden Gate Bridge. Bovendien is de productie (uiteraard van Koopman zelf) 'top-notch' - ook anno nu klinkt het nog geweldig.

Onvermeld in zijn verhaal blijft echter hoe het nou kwam dat Sausalito Summernight in de VS werd opgepikt. Daar moet je doorgaans toch een stevig promotie-apparaat voor optuigen, denk ik bij mezelf, zeker als je bedenkt dat de band nooit in de VS heeft opgetreden. Volgens de Engelstalige Wiki-entry speelde de oudgediende producer Kim Fowley een rol in het uitbrengen van het nummer in de VS, waarna een radiostation in Michigan het als eerste oppikte. Kort daarna werd het nummer in het hele land veel gedraaid, met - curieus genoeg - de Californische regio rond San Francisco als enige uitzondering. Zouden ze daar doorgehad hebben dat de tekst geografisch niet helemaal klopte? Sausalito ligt niet tussen L.A. en S.F, zoals de liedtekst suggereert, maar ten noorden van San Franciso.

Het kan (kon?) dus echt: een grote internationale hit scoren zonder dat je veel hoeft te doen aan promotie. Alleen moet het liedje dan wel deugen en op het juiste moment worden uitgebracht. De Wiki-entry meldt dat het nummer een Steve Miller-vibe heeft (wat ik wel kan beamen) en dat het werd uitgebracht in de week voordat de razend populaire Miller (Fly like an eagle en Book of Dreams waren enkele jaren eerder millionsellers) zelf op de proppen kwam met Circle of love, zijn eerste studio-album in vier jaar tijd. Het kán ermee te maken hebben...

Overigens lees ik ook nog dat het bijbehorende album Watts in a tank het in de VS nog tot een respectabele 68ste plaats in de albumcharts bracht. En toen Going back to China als opvolger van Sausalito werd uitgebracht, landde dat nummer net buiten de top 100 (#102 in de 'bubbling under'-lijst).

Ashes to Ashes op 1 en dat viel niet te vermijden. Zelfs Change kan daar niet tegen op. Verder wel een behoorlijk nieuwe top 5 met allemaal nummers die kort genoteerd staan. Daarmee kunnen we er nog wel even tegenaan.

Hoogste nieuwe is voor The Jam, die in Start! duidelijk leentjebuur spelen bij The Beatles (Taxman). Maar als het zo'n goed nummer is dan kun je alleen maar spreken van een fraai eerbetoon.

A Certain Ratio (ooit de band die de Hacienda opende) debuteert met Shack Up, waarvan ik pas veel later ontdekte dat dit een funkcover is. De komende jaren zitten we gebakken met deze band, want met 4 albums in nog geen 3 jaar komen er ook aardig wat singles op ons af.

Loose Joints is een project van Arthur Russell, die onder deze naam 3 singles uitbracht. Dit lijkt me gezien de titel een antwoordsong op de hit van Ronnie Dyson die deze week op 10 staat, maar ik moet de teksten nog eens naast elkaar leggen. Verder erg sterke mutant disco/proto-house, al komt de echte klapper van Loose Joints in 1983 (een top 100 aller tijden nummer voor mij).

Loleatta Holloway's Love Sensation is een feest de herkenning voor wie puber was in de vroege jaren '90: Black Box' Ride on Time, Marky Marky & The Funky Bunch' Good Vibrations, voor mij topfavorieten uit die tijd die allemaal voorbij komen in dit sterke discosoulnummer.

Verder nog entries voor o.a. E.L.O., die nog nooit mijn top 20 haalden. Een band die een beetje in mijn allergie zit op enkele nummers na. Deze maakt nog wel een kans dat te halen.

Ik kan mij niet herinneren dat er één nummer is geweest dat, in onze huidige samenstelling, zoveel punten heeft gehaald als onze gezamenlijke nummer 1. Maar liefst 179. Hoeveel meer kun je er halen. Nu, uiteindelijk 260. Maar dat gaat natuurlijk nooit voorkomen. Uiteraard is het nummer bij iedereen behalve één user geliefd tot zeer geliefd.

Jeff Lynne en consorten trekken zich de haren uit het hoofd: een magistrale 142 punten zou normaal ruimschoots voldoende zijn voor de eerste plek. Maar dat gaat zo nooit meer lukken.

Ondanks alle 'geweld' slechts één nieuwe binnenkomer. Je moest ook veel punten meenemen voor deze lijst. Je ziet wat onderin gebeurd: Randy Crawford heeft +9 en blijft slechts staan op 19.

De top 10 kent nog wel uitdagers voor David Bowie maar staan op grote achterstand. Robert Palmer heeft zich er bij gevoegd. Abba en Roxy Music maken te weinig winst terwijl Grace Jones lijkt af te haken. Paul Simon doet een verrassende stap omhoog maar zal David Bowie zeker niet van de koppositie stoten. Peter Gabriel heeft een teleurstellend weekje achter de rug en lijkt volslagen kansloos, zelfs voor de top 10.

En ik mij maar afvragen waar het uitsluitend in Nederland uitgebrachte Precious van The Pretenders blijft bij iedereen....

Het is weer eens drukker dan op de A2 bij een klein beetje asfalteren.
De nieuwe tracks komen dan ook veel lager binnen dan vermoedelijk zou moeten en de nummers gaan in filevorming omhoog. Ik had overigens wel 20 tips liggen.

Sommige uitstekende tracks vallen inmiddels ook af zonder dat er punten zijn behaald.

Stevie Wonder kwam terug met een klein album-toppertje, Hotter than July. Nodig, want menigeen, waaronder de platenmaatschappij, waren niet te spreken over het artistieke en commerciële succes van The Secret life of Plants van vorig jaar. Hier is dus Stevies' revenge.

Dan weet je niet wat je in eerste instantie hoort bij Behind the mask van het Yellow Magic Orchestra. Dat komt, als je dat nummer niet kent maar wel de Behind the mask versie van Eric Clapton. Een van zijn hoogtepunten van het August album uit 1987. Helemaal verrockt/verpopt.
Maar dan is het verschil wel heel erg grappig om te constateren, zonder een waardeoordeel over het YMO uit te spreken. Zij hebben het nummer ten slotte geschreven.

Kijk, dat vind ik nou het leuke van dit soort topics die soms echt de diepte in gaan. Hier nog iemand die vertrouwd is met Eric Claptons versie van Behind the Mask. Maar dat nummer is dus origineel van het Yellow Magic Orchestra? Ik had geen idee. Klinkt inderdaad wel heel anders, met die vocoder. Maar zeker interessant. Ik wil me nog eens verdiepen in de muziek van YMO, van wie ik lees dat de leden destijds in Japan werden aanbeden als tienersterren. Moet een vreemde gewaarwording zijn geweest voor Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Het doet je afvragen hoe Clapton op het spoor gekomen is van dat nummer. De connectie heet Michael Jackson. Die nam het (met door hemzelf aangevulde lyrics) op voor Thriller, maar dat nummer haalde het album niet. Waarna Clapton zich via studiomuzikant Greg Phillinganes (toetsenman uiteraard) interesseerde voor het nummer, en zich voor zijn opname dus baseerde op de Jackson-versie. Die laatste zag overigens pas in 2010 het licht, als een geremixte song op het posthuum uitgegeven (en omstreden, want niet alle nummers bleken door hemzelf ingezongen) Michael-album.

Ja. zo'n hit had hij op dat moment wel nodig. Het was echt een enorme wereldwijde hit: in veel landen in de top 10 of 5 en in diverse landen zelfs nummer één, lees ik op Wikipedia.

Je hoort het nummer niet zo vaak meer op de radio, maar ik vind Master Blaster een van zijn beste singles. Een prima stukje reggaefunk. Gebaseerd op de ontmoeting met Bob Marley, die in 1980 enkele malen in het voorprogramma van Stevie stond. Ik heb destijds de zeer geslaagde dub-versie op de B-kant bijna net zo vaak gedraaid als de A-kant. Ook die is zeer goed gedaan, zeker waard om eens te beluisteren.

En wat zou de Japanse tradtionele conservatieve, niet zo liberale jeugd van hem zijn gaan denken toen hij in de cultfilm Merry Christmas mr. Lawrence de wrede Japanse kapitein Yonoi ging spelen die, tot grote ontsteltenis ongetwijfeld, een oogje kreeg op de Engelse krijgsgevangene David Bowie? Hij maakte er prachtige filmmuziek bij (dat niet lijkt op YMO), dat één van de beste singles aller tijden (!) heeft opgeleverd, Forbidden colours. Mag in dit verband zeker nog aanvullend worden geconstateerd.

Als ik het goed heb (de kenners zullen mij anders wel corrigeren) bracht Fischer Z in Nederland een dubbele A-kant uit met Room service en Limbo. In mijn herinnering was Limbo ook meer gedraaid en die vond ik ook leuker. Omdat dit lijstje geen singleverkoop weergeeft, maar mijn smaak, staat alleen Limbo genoteerd. Theoretisch zou Room service ook nog apart kunnen binnenkomen...

Room Service staat groot op de hoes en heeft de A op het labeltje geprint staan, Limbo de B.
