Ik ga maar uit van wat Discogs meldt. Die bron vind ik net iets betrouwbaarder. Verder is de website van Nick & Jane Hall nog steeds in de lucht, al maakt die geen melding van zijn overlijden. Maar de single en LP zijn verder natuurlijk wel een op-en-top Nederlands product.

Grappig dat Herman die Telegraaf-voorpagina heeft opgeduikeld. Ja, ook toen al was Patty Brard wel 'hot' als het gaat om shownieuws. Je kunt van haar zeggen wat je wilt - en ik heb niet veel met haar op - maar ze heeft haar korte muzikale carrière toch nog jarenlang weten te rekken als Bekende Nederlandse.

Laat mij het trouwens nog even opnemen voor eendagsvlieg Ginger, want ik vind Blind Date een heerlijk aanstekelijk popliedje, dat ik gelukkig nog op single heb. Het lijkt erop dat het nummer alleen in Nederland een klein hitje was. De naam helpt niet bij het zoeken op internet. Discogs vermeldt maar liefst elf acts/bands met de naam Ginger en ook last.fm vermeldt er zeven (wij hebben het over nummer 6).

Om de een of andere reden heb ik altijd gedacht dat het een Australische band was, maar nader onderzoek wijst uit dat de band zowel Britten als Australiërs telde. Goed voor twee albums en een handvol singles. Eigenlijk wel benieuwd of die twee albums net zo goed waren als die single. Maar inderdaad, niet op Spotify, al zie ik op YouTube wel wat opnamen.

Ashes to ashes ligt mooi op koers om een mooie positie in onze eindlijst te gaan halen. Ik heb uiteraard het overzicht en zo lang je maar op één blijft staan gaat het voor elke artiest de goede kant op. Er komt natuurlijk nog wel e.e.a. voor kijken.

Echt typische 1980 hits zijn er in onze nieuwe lijst terecht gekomen. Top 40 hits ook. Zeldzaam in het geval van Manfred Mann's Earth Band.
Alleen Pino d'Angio zullen de meesten kennen van 1981.

Madness stond op het hoogtepunt in hun carrière. 1979 Zal het artistieke hoogtepunt zijn. 1980 en 1981 de meest succesvolle jaren. Met het album Absolutely (wie heeft het niet) en de hits Baggy trousers en Embarrassment.

De grote verliezen liggen bij het Electric Light Orchestra (-44) en Abba (-26). Jeff Lynne heeft geluk dat ELO zo verschrikkelijk veel punten had dat het verlies in plaatsen uiteindelijk nog meevalt.
Aan de pluskant noteerde Stevie Wonder +26, Manfred Mann's Earth Band zelfs +54.

Met deze sterke binnenkomers lijken mij wel wat veranderingen op til in onze lijst. Ben benieuwd...

Zes erkende nieuwe binnenkomers, dat is niet zo verrassend. Een onstuimige lijst ook, toegegeven. En dat nog zonder herfststormen.

Ik wil nog wel even een nummer aanhalen dat mijn lijst zeker niet gaat halen, en dat is dan vermoedelijk de eerste Paul McCartney single ooit, in elk denkbaar verband:

Temporary secretary.

Voor mij behoort dit tot het slechtste wat McCartney ooit heeft gemaakt maar tot mijn onsteltenis heeft het nummer een 3,62 gemiddeld bij RYM. Onbegrijpelijk.
Maar iedereen mag er uiteraard mee doen wat hem goed dunkt. Ik hou mijn lijst voor dit nummer gesloten.

Die kan ik niet vinden. Wel Cristina - Is That All There Is, maar die single is al van 25 januari.

Het is inderdaad Is That All There Is. Ik heb de afgelopen tijd een beetje een bezemactie gedaan m.b.t. oudere singles uit dit jaar, dus wellicht dat er meer oudjes doorsijpelen de komende tijd. Op zich vind ik het wel te billijken nu nog singles van begin dit jaar te laten binnenkomen.

Eddie Money die ik eigenlijk alleen goed kende van Take Me Home Tonight. Dit is wel net even wat anders, maar lekker laidback. Toffe ontdekking.
En het nadeel dat je de entries van meerdere hitlijsten als basis gebruikt, is dat twee kneiters van singles (van La Ross) redelijk tegelijkertijd in de persoonlijke weeklijst komen te staan.
En het beste nummer van Maywood mag dan eindelijk ook binnenkomen.

Lekker weekje met 2 geweldige singles die meteen de top 20 halen. Verder zowaar nog 3 platen van Nederlandse makelij. Het origineel van Long Blond Animal had ik nog nooit gehoord volgens mij, ik kende alleen de Unplugged versie die een hit was in de jaren '90. Ik heb niet zoveel met de Earring, maar dit vind ik wel een van hun betere nummers.

André Hazes behoeft geen introductie. Toevallig is hij precies vandaag 20 jaar geleden overleden, las ik toevallig vandaag.

Jan van de Grond Groep was voor mij een ontdekking. Leuk nummer en toevallig zag ik van de week de clip van Doe Maar's Doris Day, waarin Ernst Jansz een shirt van de groep draagt. Geen idee of dit hier een bekende groep is, op RYM had de single helemaal geen stemmen.

Toevallig zelf uit die buurt afkomstig? Een andere verklaring voor het noteren van Vader Abraham schiet mij zo niet te binnen .

Het venijn zit in de staart, met vier nieuwe binnenkomers tussen 14 en 17. Niet de minsten!
Er zit een behoorlijk gat tussen de nummers 4 en 5 en de gouden tijden lijken voorbij voor zowel Ashes to Ashes als Johnny and Mary.

Die tijd is voor All over the world nu wel echt voorbij na een volgende klap aan verliespunten. Het grootste verlies van vandaag. De plussen zaten bij Pino d'Angio (+23) en Diana Ross (+30). Waarmee mij de interne strijd met I'm coming out in het voordeel van My old Piano is beslist!

Het zou wel bijzonder zijn als Diana Ross volgende week de andere drie nieuwe nummers van het lijf zou weten te houden.
Ook nog het vermelden waard is dat Ottawan na vier weken op 11 te hebben gestaan, de vijfde week alsnog weet door te stoten naar nummer 10. Dat is doorzetten!

Auld Lang Syne. Een beroemd Schots volksliedje dat daar ook vaak gespeeld wordt bij afscheidsceremonies.

Dat lied bestond volgens mij al voor de geboorte van André Hazes.

Bij ons wel, maar internationaal lag dat iets anders. Het is in dit topic al eerder aangestipt: het wereldwijde releasebeleid rond de opvolger van Upside down maakt dat La Ross hier haar vergaarde punten moet verdelen over twee nummers. Tot mijn verbazing - ik zie het nu pas, na enig internet-onderzoek - heeft My old piano in de VS de Hot 100 helemaal niet gehaald. Het nummer werd daar uitgebracht als derde single van het album Diana, nadat I'm coming out als tweede single van het succesalbum Diana was verschenen.

Internationaal was dat precies andersom. Bij ons in Nederland werd My old piano bijna net zo'n grote hit als Upside down, en ook in Engeland en veel andere landen scoorde het nummer goed. Bij ons werd I'm coming out - dus gereleased als derde single - juist een minder groot succes: het viel net buiten de top 20. Toch heb ik de indruk dat de geschiedenis niet aardig is geweest voor My old piano. Ik denk dat veel mensen heden ten dage toch vooral Upside down en I'm coming out als de grote hits van dat album beschouwen. Over My old piano hoor je niet veel meer - althans, dat is mijn indruk.

Toch blijf ik het opmerkelijk vinden dat My old piano is de VS helemaal niet aansloeg. Tuurlijk, het was de derde single van een zeer goed verkopend album, maar Ross was in die dagen een superster, van wie je zou denken dat elke uitgebrachte single wel een hitnotering zou opleveren. Maar blijkbaar niet dus.

Overigens verscheen er in Nederland, België en Frankrijk nog een vierde single van dat album: Tenderness. Elders in de wereld werd dat nummer niet meer op single uitgebracht, wat ik eveneens opmerkelijk vind. Misschien komen we Tenderness later dit jaar nog tegen in iemands lijstje.

Nee hoor .... vind het zelf een zeer geslaagde Nederlandse cover van het nummer Anak.
Mooi gedaan door Vader Abraham die zichzelf altijd wel een beetje miskend voelde in Nederland helemaal niet nodig met zo'n staat van dienst.

Wie houdt van Ultravox en vergelijkbare bands zal ik van harte de nieuwe single van Steve Hackett aanraden.

Jon Anderson deed niet meer mee aan een nieuw album van Yes en verschijnt solo met een nieuw album met bijbehorende single.
En de Buggles mogen wél mee doen aan een nieuw album van Yes en dachten: vooruit, een vierde single van The Age of Plastic. Het lijkt nog op Video killed the radio star ook.

Gary Fane maakte een klassieker van Nederlandse bodem. Een ééndagsvlieg maar wel geweldig.
En dan begint ook de tijd van het album Remain in Light van de Talking Heads. Het eerste nummer dat er van werd afgehaald werd op 12" gezet. Prachtig.

Leuk! Nooit geweten. altijd gedacht dat Once in a lifetime de enige single was die van het album werd gehaald. Maar dit zijn dus de twee meest opzwepende nummers van de A-kant van het album. Ja, die horen wel thuis op een 12 inch. Gezien hun lengte (ik neem aan dat het gewoon de albumversies zijn), maar vooral ook vanwege het zweet dat ik erop heb vergutst in de alternatieve disco die ik destijds bezocht. Helaas kwamen beide nummers ook daar veel te weinig langs.

De Amerikaanse 12" had ook een radioversie (short version) van 3:16!
