We komen in het deel van het jaar dat ik zeg: de kaarten voor de top 10 lijken mij geschud. Geen nieuwe song is nog in staat genoeg punten te halen. Alleen wie nog echt goed bezig is in de huidige lijst kan nog van enige betekenis zijn in de eindlijst. Maar anders.
Wel kunnen we ons nu gaan afvragen wat zo'n beetje de ware kersthits waren, per persoon, in 1980.
Voor mij komen er een paar in de buurt: The Turn of a friendly card en Guilty.
Ik heb wel meer nummers maar ik moet toegeven dat er nog niet echt massaal warm voor wordt gelopen. Althans, te weinig voor een notering. Het geldt voor de nieuwe van The Police, John Lennon, Neil Diamond, Rod Stewart, Kool and the Gang, Robert Palmer. Zelfs de nieuwe van Abba, heel Kerstachtig, blijft nog wat achter.
David Bowie is alweer na één week met Fashion verdwenen en Ultravox gaat het nog een keer proberen.
Een boeiende strijd tussen de nummers 1 en 2.
Ik had de nieuwe U2 nog niet zo hoog verwacht om binnen te komen maar hier een kleine explosie na een leuke sprint. Hoewel ook dat erg mee valt. Gaat 'slechts' om +25, uiteindelijk. Het is in ieder geval plus. O.M.D had vorige week -45, deze week -43. Dat houdt niemand vol.
En dan de uitslag van hits handmatig tellen die maar in één lijst (top 20) van de users voorkomt. Uiteindelijk bleken het er toch 52, minder zoals Justus18 al voorspelde, maar toch meer dan ik later dacht. Op 11 deelnemers dus bijna gemiddeld 5 nummers per lijst die bij geen enkele andere user genoteerd staan.
Het heeft voor- en nadelen. Het vergroot in ieder geval wel de mogelijkheden om te kiezen!

Bij Fade to Grey van Visage weet iedereen gelijk waar het over gaat. Het nieuwe dient zich aan en wordt omarmd.
M was vorig jaar gloedje nieuw maar eind 1980 inmiddels al weer vergeten. Het is niet zo dat ze geen muziek meer maakten. Maar het moment was helemaal weg. Het nummer niet erg verrassend.
Madness, misschien ook al eerder gezegd, op het hoogtepunt van hun kunnen en op het hoogtepunt van hun roem. Band bestaat nog, daar niet van. Maar hun finest hours lagen in de jaren 1979-1980.
En, we vragen er zelf om door alles eerder al als succes te omarmen, Jeff Lynne haalt nog maar eens een single van het album Xanadu.

Bij Fade to Grey van Visage weet iedereen gelijk waar het over gaat. Het nieuwe dient zich aan en wordt omarmd.
M was vorig jaar gloedje nieuw maar eind 1980 inmiddels al weer vergeten. Het is niet zo dat ze geen muziek meer maakten. Maar het moment was helemaal weg. Het nummer niet erg verrassend.
Madness, misschien ook al eerder gezegd, op het hoogtepunt van hun kunnen en op het hoogtepunt van hun roem. Band bestaat nog, daar niet van. Maar hun finest hours lagen in de jaren 1979-1980.
En, we vragen er zelf om door alles eerder al als succes te omarmen, Jeff Lynne haalt nog maar eens een single van het album Xanadu.

Een kwartet erg mooie binnenkomers al zeg ik het zelf, lang niet alle singles van Dire Straits zullen mijn lijst halen maar dit vind ik een heel erg mooie. Madness en zeker Visage (toch wel bijzonder om een single van Foxx, Visage en Ultravox tegelijk in mijn lijst te hebben) zijn classics en de anti-oorlog protestsong van Jona Lewie uitgebracht door het fameuze Stiff label werd door het ene zinnetje over dat hij met christmas thuis wilde zijn een kerstklassieker.

Shine Up is een beetje een verpopte versie van Lipps Inc' Funky Town, maar dat is niet zo vreemd als je weet dat Doris D het gezicht van die band was in Nederland (er zat een studioband achter, maar zij mocht hier live de boel aan elkaar playbacken). Blijkbaar werd dit ook nog een Nederlandse nummer 1 hit en dat snap ik wel, tamelijk onweerstaanbaar nummer dit.
Double Dutch Bus heb ik ooit in een popquiz ontdekt. Leuk funky nummer met grappige tekst dat je ook wel kunt zien als een vroege hiphopplaat. De tekst en het ritme van het nummer zijn gebaseerd op Double Dutch, dat blijkbaar een touwspringspel is. Nooit geweten.
Drug Train van The Cramps vond ik eerst nogal tegenvallend, maar in de herkansing hoor ik er toch wel een erg toffe surfplaat in. Maar het is lang geen Human Fly of Garbageman.
De meeste punktips sla ik inmiddels over, het genre voelt in 1980 een beetje als verleden tijd. Maar The Exploited is een ander verhaal: zij debuteren dit jaar pas en hun street punk geeft je het gevoel dat ze deze muziek moesten maken en niet alsof ze een trendvolger zijn die toevallig wat laat op de bandwagon zijn gestapt.
Pauline Murray was de zangeres van Penetration, een punkband die ook mijn lijst nog wel eens haalde dacht ik. Hier valt op dat ze eigenlijk wel een lieve stem heeft (ik moet ook aan The Sundays denken) en het liedje klinkt ergens een beetje als een Springsteen-nummer, maar dan op zijn Brits en een stuk aangenamer gezongen.
The Passions zit in dezelfde hoek; dameswave, maar The Swimmers is wel uptempo. Een stuk beter dan hun vorige singles, waaraan je niet kan afhoren dat ze ook het briljante I'm Love With A German Film Star hebben gemaakt.
Instant Funk's brengt wat je op basis van de bandnaam mag verwachten: een nummer dat er zonder wezenlijk intro meteen inknalt met een stevige funkgroove.
Celebration is natuurlijk een oerklassieker. Misschien wel het eerste nummer dat ik kende uit mijn top 40.

Ha, die Double Dutch had ik gelijk even gedraaid toen ik vanavond thuis kwam. Leuk die weer eens te horen.
Ik weet dat Pavement in Shady Lane nog zingt over double dutch, maar dan in die andere betekenis. Maar denk niet dat je die bedoelt.

Visage ga ik zeker steunen, maar wellicht dat Jona Lewie ook nog wel kans maakt op een topnotering? Een van de beste kersthits wat mij betreft.

Ik zou de halve wereld van eind 1980 in mijn lijst willen plaatsen maar dat zal helaas niet gaan. Maar een top 100 moet zeker kunnen, ik heb heel veel nummers als tip die niet eens deze top 40 halen.

Steely Dan liet voor het eerst in twee jaar weer eens van zich horen. Het zou ook gelijk de zwanenzang zijn van de band, de twee overgebleven leden, waaronder Donald Fagen, gingen solo. Daarmee mag wel gezegd worden dat Steely Dan een echte jaren '70 band is geweest.
En of het aan platenmaatschappij A&M lag weet ik niet, feit is dat er van zowel Joe Jackson als Styx zoveel singles van een album worden getrokken, dat een nieuwe single van een nieuw album naadloos overgaat in de cyclus van singles uitbrengen. Een geweldig verdienmodel natuurlijk, al haalden lang niet al die singles de hitlijsten uiteraard.
