Het was een spannende finale, hoewel OMD eigenlijk natuurlijk niet kon verdwenen. Eigenlijk, want uiteindelijk deden de Simple Minds nog wel een ultieme poging.
En Enola Gay leidt voor het eerst ook verlies. Maar Kerr kwam net te kort.

Wel een prachtig aantal van 44+. Roxy Music deed het ook opvallend goed met +29.
Maar er werd welliswaar (verwacht) puntenwinst gehaald door zowel Japan als de Talking Heads. Het mocht niet leiden tot een hogere plek.

Na twaalf weken is dan uiteindelijk wel David Bowie verdwenen. Grootste verlies van de dag -32, net zoveel als Barbra Streisand. Maar beiden hebben alweer nieuwe nummers gereed staan, zoals ook uit een aantal lijstjes alweer blijkt.

En dan zal ik niets zeggen van de kwaliteit van de nieuwe binnenkomers. Maar ze komen vrij moeizaam binnen, staan al een aantal weken tegen onze lijst aan te hikken. Ik zie daarom nog niet echt hoge ogen gooien. Maar wat niet is kan nog komen.

A Certain Ratio staat 1 of 2 plekkies te hoog, met de 45 punten? Minieme verschillen, ik weet het.

Vorige week ook al 45 punten. Met +2 zou dat nu 47 moeten zijn. Maar opmerkelijk dat die na zoveel tijd in de lijst is terechtgekomen.

Ik zal ongetwijfeld iemand vast wel een plezier doen met Don't stop the music van Yarbrough and Peoples.
Het is nog net geen one-hit wonder maar ze komen er dichtbij in de buurt.

Dan heb ik Looking for clues van Robert Palmer op oranje vinyl, dat was blijkbaar in de mode die tijd. Ook The tide is high heb ik op gekleurd vinyl, namelijk blauw. Ik had er meer op moeten letten, gekleurd vinyl is natuurlijk leuker dan zwart.

Passion van Rod Stewart was natuurlijk weer van een aardige klasse en werd een internationale hit.
Dan slaat ook de VS als land twee keer toe met eigen versies. Dat gaat dan om Need your loving tonight van Queen en In the midnight hour van Roxy Music. Ik heb het niet verzonnen en het blijft uiteraard een eigenwijs land. Voor ons is zoveel keuze natuurlijk prettig.

Dan valt ook op hoe ver we inmiddels zijn beland bij het ongebreideld uitbrengen van singles va één album bleef dat vroeger beperkt tot één á twee, nu haalt zelfs Peter Gabriel zonder moeite een vierde track van zijn derde solo-album.

En Toots Tielemans (toch?) schittert maar weer eens op zijn mondharmonica in Midnight cowboy. Ik dacht eigenlijk dat we het wilde westen een beetje achter ons hadden gelaten. En dat is ook zo. Het singletje is namelijk van 1980, de film is van 1969. En een echte spaghetti western is het bepaald nu ook weer niet. Jammer hoor, de bands met de mannen met een Stetson en een cowboycultuur lijken inmiddels definitief van het toneel verdwenen.

Hoog 'Veronica'-gehalte qua nieuwe binnenkomers met Spandau Ballet, The Police, U2 en Bruce Springsteen, maar ik vind het stuk voor stuk prima nummers. Yarbrough & Peoples' Don't Stop The Music is zo'n nummer waarvan ik artiest/titel nog niet echt kende, maar het deuntje wel. Een heel fijne Stevie Wonder-achtig synth funk groove is het.
Verder nog hele prettige dwarse post-punk van A Certain Ratio, met een tamelijk unieke sound.

Ja, en dan had OMD het deze week wel heel erg zwaar (-45) en dat leidde ook gelijk onmiddellijk tot een kleine afstraffing, van 1 naar 5.
Dat de Simple Minds naar 1 zouden doorstijgen was de verwachting. Maar ook Roxy Music en Japan doen het nog steeds goed en staan in de plus.

Een Nederlands hoesje voor de nieuwe single van Motorhead. Het gebeurt niet zo vaak dat hardrock toeslaat in onze lijst maar nu dan toch. Het is bijzonder omdat volgens 45cat.com in het singlestijdperk er slechts uiteindelijk 4 Nederlandse Motorhead singles zijn verschenen (tegen Engeland 48). Een deel zal zijn gecorrigeerd door de productie bij onze oosterburen (11) maar dat compenseert nauwelijks het verschil.
Wel dus Ace of Spades in Nederland uitgebracht (op Bronze records).

David Bowie is terug maar heeft met Fashion nog lang niet zoveel punten vergaard als Ashes to ashes. De start van Fashion is ook een stuk trager.

Bruce Springsteen voor het eerst weer eens sinds 1978, My old piano van Diana Ross houdt verrassend goed stand ondanks een verlies en de Buggles zijn de verliezer van de week (+1 en van 10 naar 13 gedaald). Voor Martijn stegen de dames Maywood nog weer twee plaatsen. Blijven het goed doen.

Het totaal aantal nummers in al onze top 20's is verder gedaald tot 98. Haal ik daar de top 20 van af, houden we 78 nummers over. Dat betekent dat we allemaal gemiddeld 7 nummers in onze lijst hebben staan die niet bij iemand anders in zijn top 20 staat. Het blijft een aanzienlijk aantal.

Om dit te weten te komen moet je niet alleen de top 20 van die 98 aftrekken, maar alle nummers die meer dan 1 keer zijn genoemd. Handiger is het om het aantal nummers te nemen dat 1 stem krijgt en dat te delen door het aantal deelnemers.

Met uitzondering van The Alan Parsons Project had ik nog wat nummers over van de maand oktober. Want er verschenen heel wat songs in die maand en, ondanks drukte, je kunt ze niet passeren.

De nummers van Mike Batt en Cheap Trick zijn misschien wat onbekender maar de Climax Blues Band had een hele aardige eendagsvlieg met Gotta have more love.

Over The Turn of a friendly Card van The Alan Parsons Project is al heel wat geschreven. Ik heb het singletje, heb het ook wel eens geklokt en kwam uit op 4:50. Ik heb dat nooit meer teruggevonden. Ook de latere albums van TTOAFC hebben nooit die 4:50 versie gekend. Op Greatest Hits albums van APP ook niet.
Terwijl kant twee van het album zo'n beetje het fraaiste is wat The Alan Parsons Project ooit heeft uitgebracht.

Heatwave, tof disco funk bandje uit Londen met een aantal catchy singles op hun conto.
Ik zag net dat ze maar liefst zes singles van het 1980 album, Candles, hebben gehaald. Ken van dit album, naast Gangsters of the Groove alleen het groovy Jitterbuggin' van. Die vind ik beter dan GotG.

James Dean "J.D." Nicholas, de opvolger van Lionel Richie bij The Commodores, deed ook mee aan dit album. En Rod Temperton, meest bekend van zijn songwriting voor Michael Jackson, deed vanaf 1976 ook mee met de band en schreef de meeste songs voor de band, zeker van dit album, alleen All I Am schreef hij niet, dat nummer was van de hand van Lynsey de Paul, die in 1972 bekend werd met Sugar Me.

Begin jaren 90 eens hun compilatiealbum Gangsters Of The Groove - The 90's Mix gekocht. Daarop staan toch wel voornamelijk hun, voor mij, grootste hits, met een aantal zeer aantrekkelijke remixen. Daaraan hebben o.a. Simon "Bass (How Long Can You Go?)" Harris, Norman Cook en Ben Liebrand gesleuteld.

Spargo scoorde hits aan de lopende band met uptempo funky songs, maar in de donkere maanden voor Kerst kwamen ze ineens met een ballad, en je moet toegeven, dat ging ze heel goed af. Voor mij persoonlijk zelfs hun beste song.

Een iets andere week dan ik in eerste instantie verwacht had, wat nieuwe binnenkomers betreft.
Hungry Heart valt daar niet onder, dat heb ik altijd al een van de leukere songs uit zijn meer beginperiode gevonden.

De afwijking zit hem in de andere twee nieuwelingen. Van Bloem kende ik heel lang alleen Even Aan Mijn Moeder Vragen. En bij nader inzien ook nog Ik Wil Alleen bij Jou Zijn. Van Vooral Jong Blijven had ik nog nooit gehoord, maar vond ik bij eerste beluistering wel een vrolijk, aansprekend nummer. Wel veel herhaling, maar de gedachte kwam in me op dat dit wel eens de aanzet voor de Nederpop is geweest. Of in ieder geval een van de nummers.

En dan Santa Maria. Er zijn guilty pleasures en er zijn guilty pleasures. Deze behoort tot de laatste categorie. Tja vroeger (eind jaren 70, begin jaren 80) thuis bij mijn ouders en bij mijn opa en oma keken we heel veel naar de Duitse TV. En daar kwam ook dit nummer voorbij. Waarom weet ik niet, maar ik kan het niet slecht vinden. Dit is samen met Heino - Blau blüht der Enzian van Heino mijn grootste Duitse guilty pleasure.
Ik zag trouwens dat Heino (hij leeft nog steeds) een complete muzikale gedaanteverwisseling heeft ondergaan in de 10's. Dit is het origineel.

Denk niet dat die laatste twee het lang vol zullen houden, maar ze mogen nu even shinen.

Ik had Uptown bijna over het hoofd gezien, ware het niet dat Martijn Jonkers beide Prince-singles onder elkaar in zijn lijstje zette. Ik vind dit de leukste van de twee.
De single van Hepie En Hepie is volgens 45cat al van 8 maart, maar komt pas deze week binnen in de tipparade.
