De keuze staat iedereen uiteraard vrij, maar in de basis kan een nummer in een lijst worden geplaatst zodra het wordt uitgebracht. Ongeacht of dat de VS, het Verenigd Koninkrijk of Nederland is. Of desnoods nog een ander land.
De ervaring leert dat Nederlandse hitlijsten in die tijd toch behoorlijk achterliepen, zeker als het gaat om Amerikaanse of Engelse artiesten.
Dat is dan nog tot daar aan toe en goed te volgen, vervelender is het als zo'n beetje tegelijkertijd in verschillende landen verschillende nummers worden uitgebracht. Dan kun je kiezen voor één van beide nummers of allebei tegelijkertijd. Of je houdt dan bijvoorbeeld consequent de Nederlandse releasedatum aan.
Dat kan gladjes verlopen. Keep on loving you van Reo Speedwagon kwam (veel) eerder uit in de VS, die datum hebben we overgenomen. Daarna volgde Take it on the run, die niet in Nederland werd uitgebracht op dat tijdstip, en nu Don't let him go. In Nederland zou het nog even duren voor Take it on the run als derde single werd uitgebracht. In dat geval komt het nummer niet meer in onze lijsten omdat we het al eerder hebben gehad.
Datzelfde pad zou ook kunnen zijn gevolgd voor Randy Crawford. Rainy night in Georgia is al eerder uitgebracht en stond toen ook bij diverse users in hun lijst. Als je uitgaat van Nederland, komt het nummer nu pas uit. Andere landen zijn inmiddels al weer toe aan You might need somebody.
Het is dus jammer voor de prestaties van de song als we voor het plaatsen van dit soort nummers in onze lijst niet consequent zijn, terwijl dat wel zou kunnen.
Iets anders is dus als Grace Jones vrijwel tegelijkertijd Pull up to the bumper en I've seen that face before uitbrengt. Dan kies ik voor mijzelf de Nederlandse volgorde. Die keuze staat iedereen echter vrij. Een andere user kan kiezen voor het andere nummer of zelfs voor allebei tegelijkertijd.

Het eerste album uit 1981 dat ik leerde kennen was My Life in the Bush of Ghosts van Brian Eno & David Byrne en voor mij is dat nog steeds een van de beste. The Jezebel Spirit is een behoorlijk onheilspellende track, helemaal als door de exorcisme-act die hier wordt gesampled. Muzikaal past het wel redelijk bij Remain in Light, waar Byrne en Eno ook samenwerkte, maar dit is nog wat experimenteler.
Eurythmics debuteert met Never Gonna Cry Again en dat is gelijk een voltreffer. Erg mooie popsong en geproduceerd door de legendarische producer Conny Plank. Dave Stewart en Annie Lennox kwamen ook niet helemaal uit het niets, dus niet gek dat ze al gelijk zo goed waren. Leuk om deze band verder te volgen in de 80s.
Verder is er ruimte voor de punk van de Dead Kennedies (een losse non-album single), neue Deutsche welle (Joachim Witt), Josef K (geen Roxy Music-cover) en Alan Vega, die we nog kennen van Suicide, maar nu meer de rockabilly kant opgaat.
T.S. monk is de zoon van jazzlegende Thelonious Monk, maar zelf maakt hij meer disco/boogie.

Het eerste album uit 1981 dat ik leerde kennen was My Life in the Bush of Ghosts van Brian Eno & David Byrne en voor mij is dat nog steeds een van de beste. The Jezebel Spirit is een behoorlijk onheilspellende track, helemaal als door de exorcisme-act die hier wordt gesampled. Muzikaal past het wel redelijk bij Remain in Light, waar Byrne en Eno ook samenwerkte, maar dit is nog wat experimenteler.
Eurythmics debuteert met Never Gonna Cry Again en dat is gelijk een voltreffer. Erg mooie popsong en geproduceerd door de legendarische producer Conny Plank. Dave Stewart en Annie Lennox kwamen ook niet helemaal uit het niets, dus niet gek dat ze al gelijk zo goed waren. Leuk om deze band verder te volgen in de 80s.
Verder is er ruimte voor de punk van de Dead Kennedies (een losse non-album single), neue Deutsche welle (Joachim Witt), Josef K (geen Roxy Music-cover) en Alan Vega, die we nog kennen van Suicide, maar nu meer de rockabilly kant opgaat.
T.S. monk is de zoon van jazzlegende Thelonious Monk, maar zelf maakt hij meer disco/boogie.

Allereerst maar Martijn feliciteren met de nieuwe woning en de verhuizing. Ik weet niet waar je naar toe gaat maar als je professionele verhuizers hebt: verhuis desondanks zelf je apparatuur en muziek. Mocht er wat mee gebeuren dan is het in ieder geval niet de schuld van iemand anders.
Kim Wilde heeft het er deze week niet bij laten zitten en achterhaalde alsnog Ph.D. Dat zijn van die onverwachte momenten.
Die is er ook bij de puntenverdeling: Bruce Springsteen zal blij zijn dat -15 toch nog een plaatsje winst op heeft geleverd en de Undertones dat -18 slechts één plek minder heeft betekend. De punten verdwijnen naar het middensegment zodat Way of the West en de 202 Machine beiden + 5 noteerden en beiden één plaats naar beneden zakten.
Sister Sledge en Japan behielden ondanks een kleine winst ook hun bescheiden plek.
De grootste winst zonder twijfel was er voor de Simple Minds (+34) terwijl de zwaarste verliezen lagen bij The Human League (-34) en vooral Madness (-35)
Ik ben blij voor de Talking Heads én George Harrison dat er alsnog een notering wordt behaald.
En het valt me op dat de langstgenoteerde plaat slechts 7 weken in onze lijst staat. Zijn we het zo oneens, wordt er zoveel fraais aangeboden of ontbreekt het aan een onmiskenbare topper voor iedereen?

Haar eerste release was volgens 45cat al weer meer dan 15 jaar geleden, in 1966 “I’m 28”. Dat zong ze op 22e jarige leeftijd.
En nu in 1981 met haar tweede Amerikaanse release gaat ze richting de 40 jaar en lijkt ze een cheerleader van 17. Ik heb in mijn top 40 voor haar de 28e plek vrijgehouden. Kan ze de volgende keer naar 17.

Ook met Johan zit ik soms in een ander tijdbubbel. Zijn Dream Soldiers stond vorig jaar juni al in zijn lijstje. Volgens mij was die toen zelfs nog niet opgenomen laat staan uitgebracht. Ik zit volgens mij vlak achter de vroegste release en die stijgt nu in de tweede week naar 27.
Johan is sowieso van een andere generatie. Hij wordt dit jaar maar liefst 400 jaar. Ik was afgelopen zaterdag in Dordrecht en ben daar maar eens in de wereld van Johan de Witt gedoken.Een aanrader.
Nieuw voor mij was dat zijn broer Luigi eigenlijk Cornelis heet.

Gelukkig maar dat die vrije keus er is; als ik verplicht was mee te doen met de wikipedia releasedatum battle was ik al lang afgehaakt. Zo komt Toni Basil bij mij pas over een maand of 9 a 10.
Voor iemand dan zegt dat Nederland zover achterloopt, voor de entry in de US charts - waar ze nummer 1 zou halen - moet ze nog meer dan een jaar wachten. In de UK was het februari (in maart #2) , in Nederland april (alleen tip), in de US september (#1 in december) . 1982 ja.

Ondanks slechts twee nieuwe binnenkomers is het toch een prima lijst geworden.
Eerst maar even de verliezers. De grootste was The sound of the crowd (-29 en verdwenen) naast The Undertones (-24) en Bruce Springsteen (-23).
De winsten vielen daarentegen minder op met Reo Speedwagon (+15) en I've seen that face before (+15) maar voor een groot deel zitten die in de bubbling under. Ik denk dat we volgende week mogen verwachten dat de Eurythmics - Never gonna cry again (+26) en The Specials - Ghost town (+23) volgende week onze lijst zullen binnenstormen.
En dan lijkt het mij gedaan met een paar oude gedienden.
Kim Wilde weet de eerste positie te pakken, zat er al een beetje aan te komen. Maar we moeten haar wel complimenteren: tweede single, tweede nummer één notering. Feitelijk presenteert Wilde ons singles waar niets mis mee is en waar niemand zich een buil aan kan vallen, of je nu van rock houdt of meer van dansbare singles. En in de ruimte die voor haar ontstaat weet zij zich heel erg goed te manifesteren.
Uiteraard moeten de singles ook goed zijn. Phil Collins en Steve Winwood presenteerden zich, na een eerste groot succes, ook met tweede en zelfs derde singles. Maar die kwamen niet in de buurt van een volgend grote succes. Daarmee wint Wilde alvast vele slagen voor het jaar 1981. En dan is het ook nog eens voorlopig nog niet klaar voor haar.

In Engeland gaven ze elke vrijdag vanaf de jaren 50 tot in de jaren 80 een gedrukt exemplaar van de nieuwste releases uit. Op 29 mei 1981 stond er in dat gedrukte exemplaar 'The New Singles' No. 877’ Toni Basil met Mickey. Daar wordt in 45cat aan gerefereerd dus is voor mij een betrouwbare bron.Gelukkig maar dat die vrije keus er is; als ik verplicht was mee te doen met de wikipedia releasedatum battle was ik al lang afgehaakt. Deze oerbron heb ik geen afdruk van. Er zijn op internet wel andere voorbeelden van dit gedrukte exemplaar te vinden.

Zoals gesteld is de releasedatum ieders vrijheid dus afwijken is prima maar afhaken zou wel jammer zijn.

Rate Your Music heeft een goed bronnensysteem dus ben ik gaan kijken welke diepere bron daar is gebruikt. Dat kan je doen door onderin te klikken op Contributions en daarna op History. Dan blijkt een zekere "unclebob" de releasedatum te hebben ingevoerd op basis van deze diepere bron (discogs).Wat Dream Soldiers betreft, ik volg voor mijn lijsten maar één bron en dat is Rate Your Music en daar staat hij op een mei 1980 release:

Daar staat toch duidelijk 16 mei 1981. Dus "unclebob" heeft een dikke duim gebruikt of de oerbron is gewijzigd (dat laatste lijkt mij onwaarschijnlijk gezien de volgorde). Inmiddels is unclebob emiritus moderator, kortom met pensioen. Ik zal RYM de rekening sturen.
