Grappig dat je dit noemt. Bij mij de hoogste binnenkomer deze week. Ik had de video nooit gezien, totdat ik een jaar of 20 geleden naar het Rotterdams Filmfestival ging waarin ze een programma-onderdeel met videoclips hadden. Stuk voor stuk clips die gecensureerd waren door MTV, waaronder ook deze van Duran Duran. Ook Soft Cell kwam daarin langs overigens, met Sex Dwarf als ik me goed herinner.
Verder sowieso een zalige week qua nieuwe binnenkomers. Leuk om Luther Vandross' eerste solohit te verwelkomen na zijn succes met Change. En het brein daarachter -Jacques Fred Petrus- ziet dan weer een nieuw project van hem terug: The B.B. & Q. Band.
Onderin verder een mooie Bond-theme en 2 ontdekkingen. A.C. Marias is Spaanse wave, een beetje etherisch. Doet me wel wat denken aan Young Marble Giants. En Hans-A-Plast is lekkere punky Neue Deutsche Welle.

Je kunt te allen tijde aansluiten bij dit topic!
Ik zou adviseren eerst te kijken naar de lijstjes van de huidige samenstellers en daaruit een eerste top 20 samenstellen.
Dan wordt het de bedoeling dat je wekelijks om je heen kijkt naar nieuwe nummers, overal en nergens.
Dat kun je doen met de top 40, engelse en amerikaanse hitlijsten vind je terug op

De lijst is onverbiddelijk: voorgaand succes leidt niet automatisch tot hernieuwd succes. En dat geldt voor Berlin van Fischer-Z die aardig dacht te zullen gaan meedraaien (-17) en dat geldt ook zeker voor All stood still van Ultravox (-15).
Als je ziet hoe snel die nummers ook weer verdwijnen, net als David Byrne (Talking Heads) en The Jam, moet je concluderen dat het aanbod sowieso veel te groot is, dat die bands al teveel jaren achter elkaar met hits blijven komen of dat de nieuwigheid er inmiddels vanaf is en er sprake is van enige sleetsheid.
Terwijl het niet te ontkennen valt, dat de nummers die binnenkomen echt allemaal behoorlijk 1981 zijn (uiteraard) maar dat het ook nummers zijn die allemaal de Top 40 hebben gehaald.
Met in ieder geval de uitzondering van Duran Duran (+66!) maar die heeft dan nog de Tipparade weten te bereiken.
De Specials zijn op de weg terug en de vraag is of de Tom Tom Club daarvan gaat profiteren. R.E.M. zit de band al redelijk op de hielen maar Duran Duran is een hitgevoelige jaren '80 icoon dat de sympathie van velen heeft.
Maar ik schat toch ook in dat Soft Cell volgende week onverwacht hoog kan komen opduiken. Vreemd genoeg had Tainted love nu nog niet genoeg punten voor de lijst deze week. Maar er zijn nu al acht users die het nummer in hun lijst hebben staan. Dat kan volgende week alleen maar goed aflopen voor Marc Almond.

Een hele reeks aan nieuwe binnenkomers en feitelijk is het daar nog steeds niet klaar mee. Maar 11 bleek het maximum.
Veel bekende namen, waarbij geconstateerd dat Gary Numan het weer eens komt proberen. Art Garfunkel voor het eerst weer eens in geruime tijd een aardig nummer heeft, waar Albert West (jawel) voor het eerst sinds Ginny Come Lately (1973) met een aardige single komt. Je moet streng zijn.
Kim Wilde scoorde in Nederland helemaal niet met Water on glass maar hier haar nieuwe poging. Tenpole Tudor heeft een meestamper die wel massaal werd aangehangen. New England is hier onbekend gebleven maar heeft een sterke single geproduceerd door Todd Rundgren.
Santana, Steve Winwood hebben prima vervolgstukken. Van Spandau Ballet ben ik nog niet erg weg, hun tijd moet nog komen. Computer Love van Kraftwerk is nog steeds hoog aangeschreven en misschien wel hun bekendste werk sinds Autobahn.
Maar de beste single van deze week wordt uitgebracht door U2. De band timmert aan de weg, dat is wel duidelijk. Nog niet overal even fanatiek, Fire werd alleen uitgebracht in Engeland en Ierland.

Een hele reeks aan nieuwe binnenkomers en feitelijk is het daar nog steeds niet klaar mee. Maar 11 bleek het maximum.
Veel bekende namen, waarbij geconstateerd dat Gary Numan het weer eens komt proberen. Art Garfunkel voor het eerst weer eens in geruime tijd een aardig nummer heeft, waar Albert West (jawel) voor het eerst sinds Ginny Come Lately (1973) met een aardige single komt. Je moet streng zijn.
Kim Wilde scoorde in Nederland helemaal niet met Water on glass maar hier haar nieuwe poging. Tenpole Tudor heeft een meestamper die wel massaal werd aangehangen. New England is hier onbekend gebleven maar heeft een sterke single geproduceerd door Todd Rundgren.
Santana, Steve Winwood hebben prima vervolgstukken. Van Spandau Ballet ben ik nog niet erg weg, hun tijd moet nog komen. Computer Love van Kraftwerk is nog steeds hoog aangeschreven en misschien wel hun bekendste werk sinds Autobahn.
Maar de beste single van deze week wordt uitgebracht door U2. De band timmert aan de weg, dat is wel duidelijk. Nog niet overal even fanatiek, Fire werd alleen uitgebracht in Engeland en Ierland.

Het was me vorige week niet meteen opgevallen, maar mijn hele top 4 bestond uit zangeressen; en deze week weer, dus kan ik het alsnog melden. Dat was toen al best bijzonder, maar tegenwoordig is dat (zo goed als) uitgesloten. Ik heb toch sterk de indruk dat zangeressen vroeger (bv in 1981) veel beter zongen/waren dan tegenwoordig, als je nu in de top 40 kijkt...
New England was een Amerikaanse rockband, die in Nederland ineens aan de weg timmerde met Get it up; ook hier was Frits Spits met zijn Steunplaat de motor achter het (radio)succes. Het opvallende is dat Get it up in hun discografie als single niet voorkomt; kennelijk alleen in Nederland uitgebracht. Nog opmerkelijker is dat hetzelfde Get it up in een house coverversie door het Spaanse Sensity World in 1995 daar weken op 1 heeft gestaan. Volgens Wiki zijn er zelfs 70 housecovers/remixes van Get it up gemaakt...
En onze eigen Anita Meyer maakt een soundswitch die haar wat kwakkelende carrière een ongelofelijke boost geeft, de grootste hit uit haar carrière: Why tell me why.

Even wat opschoning met oude nummer 1's eruit en nummers die hier reuring veroorzaken komen binnen.
De nieuwe nummer 1 van de BB & Q Band zou als ik een top 100 aller tijden voor mezelf moet maken weleens bij de bovenste 35 kunnen zitten, alles klopt aan dit nummer, al heb ik dit nummer echt veel later leren kennen (waarschijnlijk door Veronica of Tros radio Gouwe ouwen, ik vind het bij deze omroepen passen (??) het heeft ook een "toen mensen in de jaren 80 uitgingen hoorden ze dit" uitstraling.

Je zegt wel als je naar de top 40 kijkt, maar als je naar deze top 3 kijkt zie je toch 3 singles die in Nederland allemaal niet de top 40 hebben gehaald. Die vergelijking gaat dus een beetje scheef.

week 30 voor 1981 waarin de top 3 blijft staan, daaronder snelle stijgers voor REM en Pat Benatar. Vier binnenkomers, ELO uit de tipparade, Squeeze uit de britse charts. De andere twee deden niet aan charts.
Ik heb twee albums van Hans-a-plast, vernoemd naar de pleisters; ik leerde ze kennen via een neue welle uitzending op Arte aan elkaar gepraat door Stereo Total. Daar leieten ze Lederhosen Typ zien, een punky nummer waarvan de tekst door de zangeres zo'n beetje in het gezicht van een mannelijke fan werd gespuugd. Deze single komt tussen hun 2e en 3e album maar staat op geen van beide, qua sound past het wel bij eerst genoemde nummer.
The Teezers ken ik van een verzamelbox waar ze met de (betere) b-kant van deze single op staan, hun enige trouwens lijkt het. Een cover van een nummer van The Ronettes waarbij de wall of sound vakkundig om zeep geholpen is ten faveure van een powerpop/glam rock sound.

Dat is een beetje (foutief) gegoochel met cijfers. Twee van de vier (uit mijn top 4) haalden wel als single de top 40 (ook Deniece Williams!), een van de vier heeft vaak genoeg de top 40 gehaald (maar net niet met deze single (Kate Bush) en slechts eentje heeft de NL top 40 nooit gehaald (maar wel de tipparade).

Het is natuurlijk voor de concurrentie niet snel mogelijk om vergelijkbare cijfers neer te leggen maar 1 x +66 en 1 x +46, dat brengt je wel naar de Top van de lijst. Alleen als The Specials standvastig waren geweest hadden ze de aanval kunnen afslaan maar het was duidelijk hun tijd.
En laten we eerlijk zijn, Girls on film heeft de frisse aanpak en daarnaast kwaliteit genoeg om deze stap in onze gezamenlijke lijst te zetten.
Klaar zijn we natuurlijk nooit want de volgende uitdaging staat alvast voor Duran Duran klaar: Tainted love van Soft Cell.
Ik durf geen uitspraken te doen, ik schat de kans op (uiteindelijk) een wisseling van de wacht op 50/50. Beiden hebben een behoorlijke aanhang (9 users van de 12).
Dat is meer dan Radio Free Europe (8) en Spandau Ballet (7). R.E.M. heeft dan al de top 2 bereikt maar Chant no. 1 lijkt in ambities wat terug te moeten schakelen. Vooral met de huidige top 6 nog boven zich. En dan hijgt de B.B. en Q. Band nog in de nek. Spandau Ballet is dan ook nog niet op het niveau van het album True dat pas volgend jaar zal volgen.
