Wie had 44 jaar geleden kunnen bedenken dat we ooit, zoveel jaar later, een lucratief handeltje in zeehondentegeltjes van Pieterburen zouden beginnen met de verkoop er van aan Japanners. Ik niet maar ik leerde wel dat elk land buitenlandse deviezen nodig heeft dus voilà!
En ik heb niks te zeggen, een mooi dik wandtegeltje uit de 17e eeuw gaat weg voor kapitalen, dus wie weet wat een investering de Japanners hier doen!

Veel liefde, de Simple Minds beperken zich tot de song, maar het (nu nog) kwintet van de Human League wil graag gelijk actie. Het kan zijn, maar beide bands maken wel steeds grotere stappen naar het grote publiek. Al mogen de Nederlandse hitlijsten dan nog niet zijn bereikt. Dat gaat nog komen.

In een overigens véél te drukke lijst. Veel te veel artiesten met blijkbaar te goede muziek. De Moody Blues leveren een logisch vervolg en gelukkig laat Ian Dury ook weer eens van zich horen. Maar er is ook één band die zich bij mij voor het eerst aandiende en op basis daarvan weet door te dringen tot de beste 40: de Sunnyboys.

Niemand hoeft zich er voor te schamen nog nooit van deze band te hebben gehoord: het is een Australische band met vooral hits (14) in de jaren '80 in het thuisland. In Frankrijk is het ooit nog eens geprobeerd (niet Happy Man) maar ook daar is het bij één poging gebleven. Maar ik hoorde het, als één van de vele tips, en de newwave achtige aanpak beviel erg goed. Zo heb ik ook weer wat geleerd.

En uiteraard van harte welkom bij dit boeiende topic!

Daar is die dan, mijn hoogste binnenkomer, op nummer 18. Menige muziekjournalist noemde het in de media aan het einde van 1981 één van de slechtste platen van dat jaar, mede door de discobeat.

Maar ik vind het nog altijd een fascinerende en voor mij belangrijke plaat. Ik ben vrijwel meteen de hele LP gaan kopen en al de originele composities in volle lengten erbij gaan zoeken. En zo raakte ik in 1981 van mijn hitparade bubbel in een klassieke muziek bubbel.
Die plaat heeft mij veel kennis en hebbedingetjes bezorgd van klassieke muziek.
Nico1616 is weg uit onze hitparade bubbel (mede door een muziekwedstrijd). Zal hij ooit terugkeren?
Maar gelukkig komt er snel weer iemand die zijn plek inneemt. Welkom Finn!
Ik hoop dat je lang zal blijven.

Diezelfde hoop zit ook in mijn één na hoogste binnenkomer, nummer 31. Zelden een nummer gehoord dat in zulke superlatieven hoopt dat iemand zal blijven, maar in dit geval tegen beter weten in.

Een nummer waarmee Marco Borsato bekend werd dankzij een muziekwedstrijd en dat zijn eerste hit in Nederland werd (in het Italiaans). Een andere muziekwedstrijd zal hem later weer doen vertrekken.
Zal hij ooit in de hitparade terugkeren?

Toen ik Hooked on classics in mijn schrift bij de tips zag verschijnen, dacht ik, ha, leuk! En ongetwijfeld zal ik hier wel de enige mee zijn die hem noteert... Maar nu wordt mij zelfs het gras weer onder de voeten vandaan gemaaid door Marzipaintree. Wat een aparte plaat. De muziek is 100% klassiek, alleen is er een discoklap aan toegevoegd (en logischerwijze zijn sommige stukken dus wat versneld of vertraagd). Ik had geen idee dat er zoveel klassieke meesterwerken in gestopt waren, 17 maar liefst. En dan heb je al een aardige dwarsdoorsnee van de populairste klassieke muziek.

week 31 voor 1981 met verandering in de top, REM op 1 maar lijkt een tussenpaus met Sheena en Kim als hoge binnenkomers. Siouxsie ook met een nieuwe en dan nog twee onbekende namen als binnenkomers.
The Chefs hebben maar 1 ep en 1 single uitgebracht, in die volgorde ook. Ik ken ze via dezelfde verzamelaar als The Teezers die nog net iets hoger staan, daar staan ze overigens op met een nummer dat noch op de ep noch op de single staat. Ze hebben wel een verzamelaar dus of rym is incompleet of ze hebben een hoop unreleased of rarities. Muzikaal typisch 80s post-punk geluid.
Gister zag ik op BBC een aflevering van Pointless Celebrities waar het antwoord op een vraag Melody Maker was. Een van de kandidaten zei dat hij daar regelmatig in afgebrand werd met z'n band Opgezocht welke band dat was, dat bleek The Higsons en zo slecht vind ik het niet. Niet gechart, van juli 81 dus kan nog prima. Kandidaat Charlie Higson is overigens bekender geworden als (scenario) schrijver / acteur dan als muzikant, daar had hij ook z'n deelname aan te danken.

En daar zit je dan voor op het puntje van je stoel. Niemand ziet het gebeuren maar ik wel en dan eindigt de top 3 op 133, 131 en 130 punten. Ver van de overige nummers verwijderd.

De invloed van Finn doet zich weliswaar gelijk gelden maar de winst van Duran Duran was gewoon te weinig.
En dan wint R.E.M. nipt vanwege 4 nummer 1 posities op 9 liefhebbers; Soft Cell stijgt gigantisch door, ook nog boven Duran Duran, doordat de band maar liefst 12 van de 13 users voor een notering heeft weten over te halen. Dat vind je dan ook terug in de score.

De komst van een nieuwe deelnemer leidt in de regel tot plussen en tevreden gezichten, alleen de Specials, Tom Tom Club, Maywood en Jean Michel Jarre zaten wat in de min.

Van de verdwenen nummers hadden er 4 van de 5 nog steeds genoteerd gestaan, zie maar het gering aantal punten dat werd ingeleverd.

Nog even, bij een gelijk aantal punten wint het nummer met de hoogste plaatsen bij de users. Dus On the Beat won daardoor van Ghost town en Sheena Easton bleef nipt boven Spandau ballet.

Waarbij overigens nog even aangestipt dat onze nummer 1 vooral en uitsluitend in 1981 werd uitgebracht in de VS. Vandaar ook deze hoes voor Radio Free Europe. Europa zelf moest wachten tot 1983 voordat het nummer hier werd uitgebracht.

Nogmaals welkom aan Finn, hopelijk is hij tevreden over de geboden kwaliteit en volgende week is er weer een gezamenlijke lijst!

Aah vandaar. Ik dacht nog bij mezelf dat ik R.E.M. pas in 1983 of '84 had ontdekt (met ofwel dit nummer ofwel (Don't Go Back To) Rockville). Ik was meteen verkocht.

En zo kwamen er opeens hele grote namen voorbij bij de releasedatum van de eerste week van augustus.

Nieuw plaatwerk en een nieuwe wereldtoer voor de Rolling Stones: 1981 was een jaar dat men daarover zei dat de band wel érg oud begon te worden, muzikaal kwamen ze niet meer mee, Keith Richards was op sterven na dood en na de toer zouden ze vermoedelijk wel eens kunnen stoppen. Mick Jagger was 38.

Maar het album Tattoo you verpletterde alle kritiek, de toer verpulverde de toeschouwersaantallen (ook Nederland werd aangedaan), zou nog worden gevolgd door een spraakmakende live-cd en de Rolling Stones, wel, die rocken ook ver na hun tachtigste er nog steeds lustig op los. Recent heb ik nog steeds een nieuw nummer in mijn actuele lijst staan. Het kan verkeren.

Het valt mij overigens nog mee: ik wilde schrijven dat ze iedereen hadden overleefd maar veel van de artiesten in mijn lijst zijn nog steeds op de één of andere wijze actief in de muziek.

Het is wel erg druk, ik ben erg benieuwd hoe al die nummers er nog in zullen slagen grote successen te boeken.

Toch staan er ook veel in de gezamenlijke lijst die wel al het loodje hebben gelegd, oa Rick James (al heel lang), Tom Petty, meerdere van de Specials en Jacksons, mannelijke helft van Lime ook geloof ik.... en Kirsty MacColl natuurlijk, bij sommige nog genoteerd maar bij veel ook al er uit.
