Heb afgelopen weken dezelfde ervaring met Tainted Love. Vond het altijd een geweldig nummer, maar bij het samenstellen van de wekelijkse hitlijst, komt deze zeker niet als fijnste naar boven. Bij mij is die in de 5e week al richting uitgang aan het gaan. Hoe dat zo kan verkeren?!

En Steve Winwood staat sinds 2 weken hoog op de "albums to listen"-shortlist. Na het fantastische Night Train en doordat Spanish Dancer hier al voorbij kwam en deze me zeker aansprak, heb ik het gevoel dat ik een aantal fraaie albums ben misgelopen, in al die jaren.

week 36 voor 1981 met het debuut van de austalische Divinys, het zou nog een decennium duren voor ze in Nederland enige bekendheid kregen maar in eigen land scoorden ze meteen al een hit met Boys in Town. En waarom ook niet, heerlijk nummer.
Drie andere binnenkomers; Duran Duran en Human League, wel bekend, komen in de tipparade binnen en Foreigner, uit de us charts, stond al een poosje te wachten maar heb ik nu pas ruimte voor.

Het weekend weggeweest en daardoor nauwelijks tips beluisterd, hoop het komende weken weer een beetje recht te breien.

Hoogste nieuwe is in ieder geval Prince' Controversy; die na I Wanna Be Your Lover en Bambi zijn derde top 20 hit scoort. Heb dit altijd een van zijn beste nummers gevonden; eigenlijk is het zijn eerste voltreffer wat mij betreft.

Kim Carnes' Draw of the Cards heb ik nu 3 keer gehoord en elke keer vind ik hem weer een stuk beter dan de vorige. Mooie spannende plaat met synths, doet me een beetje denken aan I Robot van Alan Parsons Project, maar dan in een popjasje. Al hoor ik er ook wel wat Japan in terug.

Eiichi Ohtaki's Koisuru Karen is een city pop plaat uit Japan, met invloeden van Brian Wilson, Phil Spector en Amerikaanse 70's soft-rock. Eigenlijk was het vooral de hoes die me intrigeerde: gemaakt door de Japanse grafisch designer/illustrator Hiroshi Nagai en sterk beinvloed door David Hockney. Een tijd terug heb ik al zijn hoezen online verzameld en mocht ik er eens een mooi boek van tegenkomen dan wil ik dat zeker hebben.

Inzake State of Independence: de Donna Summer-cover is grandioos, maar het origineel was me nooit echt opgevallen. Nu klonk het bij beluistering goed genoeg om te laten binnenkomen en ben benieuwd hoeveel het nog gaat groeien.

Verder nog een prima plaat van U2. Niet opzienbarend, maar het luistert wel lekker weg.

Heel bijzonder hoe we het elke keer weer zo spannend weten te maken!
Want er hoefde in de top 4 weinig te gebeuren of de top van de lijst had er weer geheel anders uitgezien.

Abacab blijkt een gevierde gemeenschappelijke song, mede wellicht vanwege de ingeslagen koers van de band Genesis: het Engelse drietal bleek ook singles kopend publiek aan te trekken. De tune en de mokerslagen van Phil Collins op de drums doen de rest.

Het blijft daarnaast een potje worstelen tussen de Human League en de Simple Minds. Waarbij beiden inmiddels in de min staan qua punten. De vraag is of ze volgende week nog steeds strijden om de bovenste plaatsen. Want ook O.M.D. heeft zich nadrukkelijk gemeld.

Bij de nieuwkomers wordt het experimentele van Godley & Creme gewaardeerd. Ook hier, alles valt of staat daarbij, een sterke song. Net zo goed als dat ook de opvallende laatste worp van de Litte River Band de groep weer eens terugbrengt in onze lijst.

En dan kun je de lijst langzaam verlaten met een verlies van 15 of 20 punten. Dan verlaat je de boel waardig. Het kan ook plotseling met je gebeurd zijn. Er zijn wel eens nummers van plek 4 of 5 verdwenen. Maar een verlies van -51 voor Soft cell is ook heel erg fors. Dat is het moment dat blijkbaar het overgrote deel van de achterban er tegelijkertijd een beetje klaar mee is.

Gelukkig is Soft Cell zelf voorlopig nog niet klaar met ons.

Het is Police tijd en dat zullen we weten ook. Wat waren we geweest zonder toch een behoorlijk aantal Police singles. Voor de Nederlandstalige liefhebbers begon nu toch echt de tijd van Doe Maar. Beide bands kenden ongeveer dezelfde tijdspanne van succes.

Grappig te zien dat in de loop van de tijd rollen na enige tijd toch (dramatisch) kunnen worden omgedraaid. Als voorbeelden de Human League en de Simple Minds. De eerste band lag mijlen ver voor op de tweede. Maar na 7 weken worden ze toch achterhaald. Zo moet het ook werken met een lijst. Voortschrijdend muzikaal inzicht of eigenlijk liefde voor.

De Sunnyboys zijn nog door niemand opgepikt maar zijn ook zo'n band. De eerste band waarvan ik zeg: geweldig, de muziek begint voor het eerst te neigen naar de jaren '90 en het begin van de 20e eeuw. En dan loop je als band een heel eind voor.

Het verhaal is heel simpel.
Every little thing she does is magic was de eerste single van de Police van Ghost in the Machine in de VS en Europa, behalve Engeland. Daar werd gekozen voor Invisible sun.
Invisible sun werd ook in Nederland uitgebracht maar pas in 1982.

Voor mijn 1981 (en 1982) gevoel ga ik niet aan die volgorde tornen.

Ah, dat krijg je dus als je blind vaart op de UK charts

Maar ik volg je helemaal en ik heb mijn lijst en bericht aangepast

En dan toch de clip van Invisible Sun tonen

Ik wil graag toch ergens wel een beetje consequent blijven

Ook van mijn kant de felicitaties. Eigenlijk moet ik een jubileumkalender maken voor iedereen hier. Je zal maar iemands jubileum vergeten.
In ieder geval wil ik ook nog Justus18 feliciteren met zijn 10-jarig lijstjes jubileum.

Eind dit jaar vier ik ook mijn 10 jarig lijstjes jubileum op Musicmeter. Alleen val ik nog wel eens weg, zodat mijn jubileum eigenlijk pas in 2027 gevierd mag worden. Justus18 echter gaat altijd maar door, in voor en tegenspoed.

Zijn smaak blijft onvoorspelbaar. Maar soms ook niet. Zo ga ik voor de BB&Q band en blijkt geheel volgens mijn verwachting Justus voor de BB band te gaan. Die eerste band staat bij mij deze week op de eerste plek en dat heb ik met Poeha gemeen (is dat de afgelopen 10 jaar ooit eerder gebeurd?). Waarbij ik graag de indruk wil wekken dat de Q voor quality staat maar dat is niet zo.

Overigens heb ik voor het eerst in al mijn lijstjes een re-entry. Normaliter zit er een dikke muur tussen mijn nummer 40 en 41 voor nummers die al eerder in mijn top 40 stonden. Maar Ultravox bewijst in woord en daad het tegendeel.

week 37 voor 1981 waar Simple Minds het stokje overnemen van Sheena, maar Sheena komt ook meteen alweer als hoogste binnen met de 1e single van haar 2e album. Dat album ken ik al sinds ik denk iets van 1985 of 86 (lp geleend van de bieb, op cassette gezet en veel gedraaid), nadat ik Sheena met de singles Strut en Sugarwalls leerde kennen en vond ik altijd erg goed.
Meer hoge binnenkomers van Pretenders en Kirsty MacColl, en de klassieker van Soft Cell nog net buiten de top 20. Ook nog net ruimte voor Matchbox die in de tipparade binnenkomen.

Nog meer moois op 25 met Thomas Dolby en Europa And The Pirate Twins de 1e single afkomstig van het toekomstige en machtig mooie album The Golden Age Of Wireless die hier toch heel wat rondjes heeft gedraaid op de platenspeler.
