Don't hide in the shadows van Kissing the pink heb ik opgedoken uit het boek van George Gimarc, the punk diary. Op pagina 524 staat dat hun debuutsingle uit kwam op 5 oktober 1981. Dat is een maandje later dan op 45cat.

Zelf heb ik Kissing the Pink leren kennen via Mr. Blunt in juli 1982. Frits Spits ging op de radio uit zijn dak bij deze steunplaat. De clip heb ik destijds maar 1 keer gezien inclusief het beklimmen van de Long Man of Wilmington. Sylvia Griffin had blijkbaar bij deze gelegenheid een blonde coupe genomen.

De single deed niets in de Nederlandse top 40, Tipparade, de Britse UK top 75 of de Amerikaanse hot 100. Maar bij de jonge Marzi stond die destijds nr. 1 in augustus 1982 in zijn persoonlijke lijstje.
Ik ben benieuwd wat die volgend jaar gaat doen.

Naar aanleiding van de binnenkomst van Don't Hide in the Shadows in jouw lijst, ben ik gelijk meerdere tracks van hun debuutalbum gaan beluisteren. Daar viel Mr. Blunt me al direct positief op. Evenals Last Film. Het als meest genoemde nummer Big Man Restless , viel me bij eerste beluistering tegen, maar mogelijk moet dat nog groeien. Het is allemaal wel echt andere kost t.o.v. One Step.

Beter laat dan nooit. Hi-Gloss deed het uitstekend bij Gerdav (top 10). Maar was verder nergens bij ons een hit. Bij mij stond die lang tussen de tips. Achteraf bezien moet ik toegeven dat die te goed is om buiten mijn top 40 te houden.

Juice Newton deed het goed bij Poeha en redelijk bij Gerdav. Bij mij was ze kansloos want ik ging voor het origineel van Dave Edmunds in 1979. Juice had daar dit jaar voor mij te weinig aan toe te voegen, behalve haar vrouwenstem.

herman grappig dat je die "before the fame" single van Black heb gevonden!

Het spijt mij dat ik jullie niet allemaal persoonlijk vandaag kan bedanken, anders dan via deze
mededeling. Maar ik zal het van de week goed met jullie maken.
Soms wordt de kracht van een enkele individu wel eens onderschat, blijkt als heel direct bezig
bent. Ik was eigenlijk al klaar met de lijst toen justus18 nog net op tijd verscheen met zijn
bijdrage. En persoonlijk “kukelde” hij Abacab van Genesis uit onze gezamenlijke lijst en Point
Blank van Bruce Springsteen er in. Zo zorgen de individuele punten toch elke keer voor
schommelingen.

Wel een bijzondere lijst met veel plusjes en toch nummers die ondanks de plus wat dalen.
Uiteindelijk hadden alleen de Human League en Earth, Wind & Fire er relatief weinig last van
omdat hun winst groter was dan de som der delen. Zoals verwacht steeg Open your heart flink
door, zoals ook volgende week mag worden verwacht van de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer,
Gloria van U2.

Abacab van Genesis verdween dus vanaf plek 5, toch leverde OMD toch de meeste punten in,
-45. Zij staan nu op 5. Het is een vermaledijde plek, de vijfde. Je wordt de top 4 uitgezet en
meestal leidt het daarna tot dramatische resultaten, is al een aantal keren voorgekomen.
En goed dat er deze week is gedacht aan het vaderlandse repertoire, met Doe Maar en Earth &
Fire. Het zal de oude Jerney Kaagman deugd doen.

En wat te denken van Prince die met -9 zelfs nog een plek stijgt.

Hans (als je dit weer kunt lezen), mooi dat je op deze manier toch nog de lijst kunt plaatsen.

Excuses. Normaal plaats ik wel even een TOP20 als ik zie dat ik de deadline niet haal en dan vul ik die later aan.

Het debuut van ABC! Iets zegt mij dat wij nog veel plezier aan die band gaan beleven in 1982 en dat begint dus allemaal met Tears are not enough.

Bands komen en gaan, ook The Jam heeft een nieuwe single maar de band rond Paul Weller is eigenlijk wel aan de laatste jaren bezig. Ik vroeg mij af of ik de afgelopen jaren The Jam wel voldoende eer heb gegeven. Minder eigenlijk misschien dan zou moeten.

Dan de albums die singles blijven geven: The turn of a friendly card van The Alan Parsons Project en Arc of a diver van Steve Winwood. En ook deze artiesten zijn voorlopig nog niet uitgerangeerd, te beginnen met nieuwe albums in 1982.

Maar het aardigste nieuwe nummer deze week dat ik hoorde was toch van Ultravox. The Voice zit natuurlijk niet zo in het hoofd als Vienna. Maar uiteindelijk was ik bij het afluisteren weer aangenaam verrast. Toch jammer dat Ultravox alles bij elkaar zo weinig heeft gescoord in de Nederlandse hitlijsten.

week 42 voor 1981 ,et Doe maar nog een weekje op 1 en vier binnenkomers.
Als hoogste The Cure met een non-album single die best op Faith had gepast.
U2 met Gloria ontdekte ik volgens mij pas met de versie op het Under a Blood Red Sky album, nu toch wel een van m'n favorieten van de band.
Beide komen uit de UK charts, de andere 2 uit de tipparade.
Zowel Earth Wind and Fire als Meatloaf zijn bepaald geen favorieten al heeft de eerste wel in m'n lijst eind jaren 80 gestaan. Maar deze nummers zijn toch wel ok, zeker die van Meatloaf zo'n beetje als enige van hem.

De top 4/5 is uitzonderlijk sterk; stuk voor stuk kandidaten voor de eerste plaats. Misschien schuift Gichy Dan daar uiteindelijk ook bij. Zijn “post-disco” is in elk geval heerlijk: elegant en tropisch getint, uit de stal van ZE Records. Hij opereerde in dezelfde New Yorkse scene als Dr. Buzzard en Kid Creole, met wie hij ook samenwerkte. Solo bleef het helaas bij die ene single; naar verluidt overleed Frank Passalacqua — zoals Gichy Dan werkelijk heette — aan AIDS.

Prachtige lijst met prachtige strijd.
Veel punten waren er nodig voor een beetje notering en we zien ook nummers met kleine winsten zelfs dalen of punten verliezen en dan naar verhouding hard dalen.

Dat had natuurlijk alles te maken met eensgezindheid, zelfs al kwamen er in totaal vier nieuwe nummers bij.

De grootste verrassing was natuurlijk Twilight van het Electric Light Orchestra die op 4 binnen komt. Inzake de Human League en The Police is er wat werk nog aan de winkel. Maar Depeche Mode bevindt zich inmiddels in een negatieve modus. U2 en The Sound volgen ook nog. Maar ik denk dat de laatste inmiddels zijn hoogste notering wel heeft gehaald.

Prince leidt een opvallend verlies, terwijl Souvenir van het OMD zich nog net weet te redden. Verlies vanaf die vijfde plek weer, natuurlijk. Ik denk dat U2 volgende week de Goden minder zal verzoeken óf de heer zal vragen hen gunstig gezind te zijn.

Yello, The Buggles en Grauzone waren bij veel users al bekende namen maar breken nu defintief door in onze lijst. Kijken of I am a camera het uiteindelijk beter gaat doen dan het Yes-origineel Into the Lens. Daar ziet het nu al er wel naar uit.
