Toen ik in 1981 aan een nieuwe opleiding begon met in mijn achterhoofd het idee dat ik er nog wel even zou blijven, begon ook mijn interesse voor alles in en rond de betreffende opleiding.
Het was de tijd dat er nog veel docenten rondliepen in spijkerbroek, met lange haren en een baard en geblokte overhemden.

Al gauw meldde ik mij aan om mede het maandelijkse blad van de opleiding te vullen, daar waren vacatures. Het gaf wat privileges. Er moest een soort van auditie voor worden gedaan, gaf een docent aan. Iets schrijven met maximaal 300 woorden.
Dat was geen bezwaar.
Ik ging er voor zitten, schreef een venijnig stuk van 1500 woorden over de VS, de Sovjet Unie en kruisraketten.

De docent knikte. "Je moest maar hoofdredacteur worden" sprak hij bedachtzaam. "Dat komt wel goed."

Hoe dan ook, dat was destijds een aardig baantje en je kwam nog eens ergens want er werden uitnodigingen gestuurd door allerlei organisaties die graag wilden dat je bij ze langs kwam. Al dan niet in groter groepsverband wilden ze dat je ze aanhoorde ongeacht het onderwerp. Je werd wat gefêteerd en dan hoopten ze dat je dan via je krantje of magazine positieve aandacht aan ze wilde besteden. Zo werkte de tamtam een beetje.

In oktober 1981 lag er een uitnodiging van de Koninklijk Nederlandse Vereniging van Transport Ondernemers voor een behoorlijke promotie-bijeenkomst in de Flint in Amersfoort. "We gaan" zei ik tegen een jongen uit mijn redactie die mijn grootste vriend ooit zou worden. "Ik lees dat er na afloop een concert is van Bram Vermeulen."

Bram Vermeulen was inderdaad ingehuurd door de KNVTO. Hij gaf een concert maar wat nog interessanter was, hij had bij die opdracht ook nog eens een single gemaakt, met op de A-kant Tien ton op wielen en op de achterzijde Het wordt tijd dat ik reis. De singles werden gratis weggegeven. Het is nooit door Vermeulen zelf ooit nog eens uitgegeven, ook niet op verzameld werk, ik ben daarom blij met een youtube-filmpje om het te kunnen laten horen.

Ik ga er geen 1500 woorden aan besteden maar ik heb er uiteindelijk hele bijzondere herinneringen aan. Die vriend en ik besloten in een jolige bui namelijk in de bosrijke omgeving na het eerste station uit de trein te stappen en naar het volgende station te lopen (Den Dolder). Dat idee was aardig, de voettocht veel te lang, de weg kwijt, en er reed bij aankomst geen trein meer vanuit dit station.

Het verhaal is mij helemaal bijgebleven en mij ook dierbaar omdat die vriend uiteindelijk niet ouder is geworden dan 40.

Er is verder in mijn lijst het debuut van The Blue Nile en Fun Boy Three. Under pressure leek een aardige nieuwe single van Queen maar later werden, na het beluisteren van het bijbehorende album Hot Space, de credits voor de song voor een belangrijk deel aan David Bowie toegekend.
Japan begint aan hun zwanenzang bij hun laatste album Tin Drum en de single Visions of China. De Simple Minds hebben een volgende sterke single en Steve Miller is weer terug na bijna vijf jaar! Journey breekt zowel in de VS als Europa definitief door.

Laten we eens beginnen met de Future World Orchestra met heerlijke Desire die exact 44 jaar geleden tot Steunplaat werd gebombardeerd door Frits Spits in zijn geweldige Avondspits en we kunnen rustig de vraag stellen als Frits Spits zich niet met dit nummer had bemoeid of het dan ook opgepakt had geworden?
We zullen het waarschijnlijk nooit weten, maar feit blijft wel dat de FWO op de muzikale kaart is gezet door Spits.

Desire is voor mij nog steeds een nummer dat nooit een seconde verveelt hoe vaak ik het ook beluister en dan mag het misschien inmiddels een beetje gedateerd klinken anno 2025, maar ja dat mag hier de pret niet drukken en zijn dit alleen maar mooie herinneringen die aan deze plaat vastkleven.

The Comsat Angels leveren ook weer een geweldig nummer af met Do The Empty House die hier in Nederland pas aandacht kregen met het nummer Will You Stay Tonight (1983) en dat weer dankzij de Verrukkelijke 15, helaas is deze band altijd wel onderschat gebleven, althans dat vind ik, maar de echte muziekpuristen wisten de weg wel te vinden naar deze band.

De Simple Minds hebben duidelijk het beste voor het laatst bewaard van dit jaar met het sterke Sweat In Bullet en zo hoor ik de Simple Minds zelf het liefst, maar 1982 gaat ook een topjaar worden voor de Simple Minds met het geweldige album New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)

Bij Japan en Ultravox is het herkenbaarheid troef als we de singles beluisteren en doen The Pretenders alweer denken aan de donkere dagen voor kerst en levert Lakeside een aangenaam discoplaatje af.

Met slechts drie prachtige binnenkomers zou je toch iets moois kunnen schrijven over wat ze gemeenschappelijk hebben. Want ze hebben allemaal iets dromerigs, iets hoopvols, iets…...

maar mijn gedachten blijven steken bij zangeres Chrissie Hynde die uiteindelijk met meerdere makers van deze liedjes het bed deelde.

Chrissie met iemand van Journey?

week 43 voor 1981 met Olivia op 1, maar met Grauzone en Wah! al op de loer. Vijf binnenkomers, Prince via de US charts (Nederland volgt over een paar weken, UK over 12 jaar), Exploited (leuk voor het TOTP publiek) en Haircut 100 uit de UK charts, Marcia Hines uit de tipparade en Helen Schneider uit de duitse lijst.
Haircut 100 leerde ik qua naam pas kennen toen zanger Nick Heyward een erg fijne solosingle maakte (Over the Weekend) die ik volgens mij via de Miniparade leerde kennen in 1986. Deze HC100 single heb ik later in een tweedehands bak ergens op de kop getikt. Niet zo goed als die solosingle maar toch zeker wel ok.
Helen Schneider (and the Kick zoals er soms wel soms niet bij staat) is een duitse zangeres waarvan ik 1 album heb, staat een cover op van Pat Benatar die hoopgevend had moeten zijn. Deze single was een enorm succes in Duitsland en is een cover van Rose Tattoo, met een iets gewijzigde titel (gypsy ipv outlaw).

Geen spektakel deze week, al stijgen Gichy Dan en Soft Cell (R.I.P. Dave Ball ) stevig door.

Olivia Newton-John debuteert in mijn lijst met het heerlijke Physical. De Grease-singles vond ik niet zo interessant en Xanadu klonk me teveel als ELO, maar dit is een voltreffer. Uitstekende popplaat.

ABC met hun eerste single onderscheidt zich ook duidelijk in positief opzicht. Gelijk al een heel hoog niveau, maar hun debuutalbum (waar dit ook opstaat) is dan ook een fantastische popplaat. Fry e.a. zaten hiervoor in de band Vice Versa, die me nooit opgevallen waren. Nog maar eens luisteren of we daar al iets van ABC in terughoren.

Verder onderin nog flink wat nieuwe aanwas. Het EP'tje van MInutemen heb ik maar in zijn geheel opgenomen, zo kort als dat is. Drie songs, bij elkaar ook grofweg drie minuten. Het is voorbij voor je er erg in hebt, maar wel de moeite waard. Goed om eens meer van ze te horen dan Double Nickels on the Dime wat een briljant album is.

Verder nog een speciale vermelding voor INXS, waar we nog een duidelijke 2 Tone-invloed terughoren. Desalniettemin is het al goed herkenbaar, mede door de kenmerkende stem van Michael Hutchence.

Dank allen weer voor alle lijsten voor week 43 over het jaar 1981!

De vraag was niet, gaandeweg de loop vanaf vrijdag, of de Police zou verliezen maar hoeveel. En dat was toch behoorlijk. -44 is zelfs voor de meest krachtige platen een behoorlijk puntenverlies.

The Police stond er niet alleen in. Ook Depeche Mode heeft een behoorlijk pak slaag gekregen van de users: -41. Blijkbaar hebben we relatief gezien alweer snel genoeg van beide hits. Want dat waren het uiteindelijk wel.

The Human League is deze week nog de lachende derde. 119 Punten voor de bovenste plek is niet spectaculair, er zijn platen die met een dergelijk aantal niet eens de top 3 haalden. Maar dat zal Phil Oakey c.s. niet kunnen schelen.

Concurrentie krijgt de Engelse band wel. Verrassend is het tussensprintje van U2 die daarmee vrij onverwacht toch voor het Electric Light Orchestra weet te eindigen.

De winnaars van de nieuwkomers zijn The Cure en Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. De laatste band gaat ongetwijfeld langdurig achter elkaar in onze lijst staan. Eerst met Souvenir, dan met Joan of Arc en daarna weer met Maid of Orleans.
O.M.D. is daarmee niet de enige band. Vergelijkbare successen zijn er voor Ultravox, de Simple Minds, de Human League en U2. De ene (sterke) single lost de andere af.

Waiting for a girl like you van Foreigner komt schoorvoetend de lijst binnen. Het is voor Nederland een wat vervroegde kerstplaat. Net als I go to sleep van de Pretenders die ik ook z'n entree zag maken. Under presseure is ook zo'n song. Maar langzaam gaan ze onverbiddelijk binnensluipen in al onze lijsten. Want we willen in de laatste maand van het jaar nu eenmaal bijpassende muziek.

En ik schat zomaar in dat we daarvoor een hele uitgebreide keuze nog zullen krijgen.

De wens is de vader van de gedachte.
Don't stop believin'.

Helaas raken de 1981-nummers van the Kinks mij wat minder dan 10-15 jaar eerder.
Hun carrière is echter niet meer kapot te krijgen, daarvoor hebben ze veel te veel moois gemaakt. De in “Destroyer” gebruikte nummers “All day and all night” en “Lola” zijn allebei ooit nummer 1 bij mij geweest.

Met enige spijt afscheid genomen van de bovenstaande 10 nummers; met uitzondering van de laatste twee songs had de rest op zich nog wel minimaal een weekje in mijn lijst mogen bivakkeren.

Maar ja. Het aanbod is enorm en de muziek is ook nog eens fraai.
Om er nog even op terug te komen: Chrissie Hynde kreeg met I go to sleep, van de hand van Ray Davies, een geweldige hit toegeworpen voor de Pretenders. De band stond in één keer weer helemaal op de kaart. Davies had het in 1965 voor de Kinks geschreven maar had het nooit voor een album gebruikt. Dat noem ik nog eens echtelijke liefde.

Verder eerste levenstekens van Paul Young en Tears for Fears. Paul Young doet hier nog een oudje van Nazareth maar de mannen van Tears for Fears lijken gelijk op volle oorlogssterkte te zijn uitgerukt. Aan zowel Young als TFF zullen we in de jaren '80 nog veel plezier beleven.

John Watts komt met een nummer van zijn eerste solo cd en blijkt verrassend genoeg, of juist niet, heel erg te klinken als Fischer-Z. Ik heb het verhaal nooit opgezocht naar het waarom maar deze solo-uitstap is Watts nooit erg in dank afgenomen. Na drie dijken van albums had Fischer-Z kunnen doorstijgen naar grote hoogten maar Watts bedankte blijkbaar voor de eer. Het zou tot '87 duren voor er weer een Fischer-Z album gaat verschijnen, de band bestaat nog steeds met albums in 2024 en 2025, maar het zou nooit meer worden zoals het was. Een een van de grootste gemiste momentums in de geschiedenis van de rockmuziek.

Mick Fleetwood leende Walk a thin Line van het Tusk album van Fleetwood Mac. Uiteraard in de uitvoering van zijn solo album The Visitor en hier gezongen door George Hawkins.

En dan heb ik nog twee 'beroemde' namen met een nieuwe single van artiesten met een enorme carrière maar van wie ik eigenlijk zelden een single in mijn lijst heb (gehad).

Ik kocht destijds 'out of the blue' , vermoedelijk in een opwelling, de single You are what you is van Frank Zappa. Dus die moet nu sowieso een notering krijgen. Centerfold van the J. Geils band is de andere single. Eindelijk iets van Geils dat leuk klonk én een hit werd. Ik denk dat dit zijn grootste commerciële hit is geworden, samen met de titelsong van het succesvolle album Freeze frame. Maar daar bleef het voor de meeste Nederlanders wel bij.

In de tussentijd dat ik schrijf heb ik het gehele album Time gedraaid van E.L.O. inclusief bonustracks. Je moet wel bijblijven! En ik vroeg me af hoe ver we inmiddels zijn: Yours Truly 2095. Hou nog even vol, nog slechts 70 jaar te gaan, we schieten op. I wish I could go back to 1981!

week 44 voor 1981 waarin Olivia op 1 blijft maar Grauzone en Wah! gezamelijk de top 3 bereiken. Prince stijgt lekker door, dan 4 binnenkomers. ELO en Shaky uit de tipparade, iets waar Alice's Joy en Emma Sharpe alleen van dromen.
Alice's Joy heeft al eerder in mijn 1981 lijst gestaan met een single waarvan ik de 7" op de gok uit een kwartjesbak had gehaald, daarna ook deze opvolger een keer gevonden en gekocht. Aardig popplaatje.
Emma Sharpe & The Features ken ik van een verzamelaar waar al meer - bekend en onbekend - m'n lijst van heeft gehaald maar net als nu vaak met andere nummers dan op die verzamelaar.

Deze top 40 is onder grote tijdsdruk gemaakt. Ik moet voor 5 uur weg naar een afspraak en aldus heb ik al mijn nieuwkomers een korte luisterbeurt van max. 5 seconden gegeven. Gelukkig kende ik ze allemaal al uit het verleden, dus ze konden het hebben.
Geheel in stijl met mijn situatie komt “Under pressure” als allerhoogste binnen. Ik zag dat er inmiddels al vijf andere deelnemers deze hadden genoteerd maar dat weerhield mij er niet van om Queen en David Bowie op vijf te zetten. Die waren ook even met z’n vijven.

Als één na hoogste komt “Colourless Dream” binnen van een echte vijfmansformatie. Tot mijn verbazing had ik die ook al bij minstens vijf deelnemers verwacht want het is een (in mijn oren) buitengewoon kleurrijk nummer. Maar die is tot nog toe alleen bij johan de witt te vinden waar die de afgelopen weken elke week vijf plaatsen aan het stijgen is.

Liefst 10 nieuwe binnenkomers. Cambodia moet nog even in de wacht, maar of Gloria het nog haalt valt te bezien. Volgende week is het do or die, maar U2 gaat vast mijn lijst nog wel eens halen.

De buren doen het in ieder geval goed met TC Matic uit Brussel en de Spider Murphy Gang uit München.

De binnenkomer daaronder is wellicht het interessantst vanuit historisch oogpunt, want je zou Alleys Of Your Mind wel de eerste technoplaat kunnen noemen. Eigenlijk is het een cover van een Ultravox nummer, wat de link tussen de Europese wave en de Amerikaanse Detroit Techno wel een beetje blootlegt. Het is het debuut van Juan Atkins, één van de Belleville Three, de drie grote technopioneers uit de jaren '80.

Een van mijn eerste cd's uit dit tijdperk was er eentje van Die Krupps, waarvan ik Wahrer Arbeit Wahrer Lohn had ontdekt via een bups industrial/ebm-plaatjes. Ook een genre dat nu ineens op komt zetten met bands als Front 242 en Liaisons Dangereuses die ook in deze weken debuteren.

Verder wel grappig om Don't Stop Believin' te zien binnenkomen. Destijds deed dit nauwelijks iets in de Nederlandse hitparades, maar de laatste jaren is het toch wel erkend als een van de ultieme jaren '80 songs. In de Top 2000 is het de laatste jaren ook doorgestegen naar de top 100 en ik denk dat er nog wel meer in het vat zit.

Wie meent dat een hertelling nodig is, dat er 15 containers met stemmen plotseling zijn verdwenen, dat de computer van musicmeter is gemanipuleerd door een vriendje van Phil Oakey en dat ondergetekende van de verkeerde partij is: ik blijf er bij dat de Human League deze week met vijf punten verschil nog net U2 is voorgebleven.
Alles is openbaar en controle blijft eeuwig mogelijk.

Spannend is het wel geweest, we hebben weer een top drie waarbij de cijfers dicht bij elkaar liggen, dat is altijd boeiend. Want U2 wordt op haar beurt weer "bedreigd" door het Electric Light Orchestra. Voor de andere gegadigden lijkt mij dat Open your heart, Gloria en Twilight volgende week nog niet echt bang hoeven te zijn.

We hebben wel inmiddels de allerlaatste dag van oktober bereikt, dat betekent dat we nog maar acht weken van het einde verwijderd zijn. Wie nog hoog wil scoren, het is nu of nooit. Ik zie bij de diverse users nog wel boeiend nieuw materiaal voor 1981, deels gaat het ook naar 1982. Maar acht weken betekent maximaal nog 160 punten voor een nieuwe song: de vraag is wie dat mogelijk nog zou redden.

Ik gun ze van alles maar ik geloof niet dat Journey of Lindsey Buckingham dat gaan doen, dus feitelijk zijn de kaarten voor de bovenste plekken in onze eindlijst wel zo'n beetje geschud. Of de toppers die hoog eindigen moeten uit onze huidige lijst nog komen, dat is niet geheel uit te sluiten.

In onze tiplijst zie ik wel nog Queen + David Bowie, Ultravox, ABC, de Simple Minds, de Pretenders en de nieuwe single van Kim Wilde naderen. Met als opmerkelijke outsider de Spider Murphy Gang die bij herman in zijn lijst opduikt. Zeven zware tips voor volgende week. Het wordt inzake 1981 nu of nooit!
