Wie die singletjes van Foreigner destijds kocht, zoals ondergetekende, kreeg ook wel eens een ongebruikelijke hoes, anders dan voorkant-achterkant en een opening aan de bovenkant of zijkant.

Het was een hoes die je helemaal moest openvouwen en dan zat de single in het midden. Dat deed ik later al snel in wit hoesje, ter bescherming.
Maar eenmaal uitgevouwen blijkt het een soort van folder, 6 vlakken aan beide zijden.

Jukebox hero kent zelfs een prijsvraag op de achterkant waarbij je een jukebox kon winnen. Het hoesje van Waiting for a girl like you maakt promotie voor albums, juist ook van anderen die behoorden tot de WEA stal. Niet alleen het album wordt getoond, er wordt een heel verhaal van de artiest bij geplaatst. Rickie Lee Jones, New England, Van Halen, Echo & The Bunnymen, Joe Vitale, Phil Collins, Stevie Nicks, Pretenders, Foreigner zelf en ZZ top.

Gelijk alle mogelijke info voor de WEA-doelgroep aan platenkopers, the show must go on. Maar ik ben het niet veel vaker meer tegengekomen. Soms een poster zoals bij Don't stand so close to me van The Police. Als je Waiting for a girl like you dichtvouwt heb je de 'gewone' hoes, met op de achterkant het album 4.

Naast het winnen van de Jukebox had ook Jukebox hero reclame voor genoemde artiesten. Alleen die prijsvraag was nog interessant. Multiple choice, maar goed, er bestond nog geen internet. De vragen:

1. Hoeveel mensen spelen in Foreigner
2. Hoe heet de drummer van Foreigner
3. Welk vervoermiddel stond afgedrukt op de hoes van de eerste Foreigner LP? (er werd nog gedacht in LP's)
4 Hoeveel nationaliteiten zijn in Foreigner vertegenwoordigd?

En dan eindigen met een slagzin, waarbij je moest aanvullen bij "Foreigner staat garant voor puike rock want........"

Ik zie dat ik niet de moeite heb willen nemen het in te vullen. Maar de liefhebbers konden met de oplossing terecht tot 01-01-1982. WEA Records B.V. Burgemeester Lambooylaan 21, 1217 LB Hilversum
Het adres staat mij nog bij, ik heb ooit nog succesvol "gecorrespondeerd" met het label.

Maar daarover volgend jaar meer.

In tegenstelling tot de vaderlandse politiek zie ik duidelijk depolarisatie in onze top 20 waarbij de stemming steeds meer naar elkaar toegaat. Van de top 16 wint iedereen er punten bij behalve één nummer dat op een ongelukkige plek terecht is gekomen. Als je alle punten van de top 20 optelt en aftrekt dan blijft er in vergelijking met vorige week een voor lijstjesmakers magisch getal over: 40

Al mijn nieuwkomers zijn Brits op een Duitse uitschieter na.

Deze hoogste binnenkomer leidde tot polarisatie in Duitsland. In München vond men het maar niks dat ze in het voor hoeren verboden gebied (Sperrbezirk) met prostituee Rosie aan de haal gingen.
Dat lag ook aan de openingszin: In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus. Dat Hofbräuhaus was een favoriet restaurant van Adolf Hitler. Hij heeft het ooit in 1914 nog geschilderd:

Wat mij betreft had hij best met schilderen door mogen gaan mits hij zich dan uiteraard van politieke activiteiten zou onthouden.

Maar dat deed hij helaas niet en in 1920 werd er de eerste grote bijeenkomst van Duitse Nazipartij in dat Hofbräuhaus gehouden. Er zouden er meer volgen.
In 1935 maakte componist Wiga Gabriel een liedje dat daarna één van de grootste Duitse schlagers uit de jaren 30 werd. Er kwamen vele versies uit maar dit is een hele bekende en een grote hit destijds in Duitsland:
In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus - Erwin Hartung & Adalbert Lutter Tanzorchester

Hoewel het een eerbetoon aan het Hofbräuhaus kan worden gezien vonden veel Nazi’s het geen geweldig lied. Het werd als een “Sauf- und Spottlied” gezien van dat heilige gebouw.

Ondertussen nam een Nederlandse Joodse zanger het lied ook op: Bob Scholte - In 't restaurant "De Blauwe stier. Het werd in 1938 een grote hit in Nederland. Hoewel hij voor de oorlog veel succes had, moest hij tijdens de bezettingsjaren onderduiken en zijn zijn kinderen en vrouw door de Nazi’s vermoord.

De echte lijstjes kenners zullen het lied ook nog herkennen in een versie die bijna 100 jaar na het schilderijtje van Hitler werd gemaakt. Het haalde de heilige top 40 niet maar stond wel in de tipparade.

En zo is deze openingszin heel ambivalent. Je kan het letterlijk opvatten als: “In München kan je zuipen in het Hofbräuhaus, maar bordelen zijn verboden.”, maar ook historisch en ironisch. Een geniaal nummer wat mij betreft met vele lagen, de hoogste binnenkomer in mijn top 40.

week 45 voor 1981, rustige periode nu, met moeite 3 binnenkomers. Maar goed er zit genoeg in de pijplijn wat betreft nummers die bij anderen al genoteerd staan of alweer zakken. Olivia blijft op 1, al was het even spannend met Wah!. Hoogste nieuwe voor Simple Minds, lager komen ook Diana Ross en Ultravox nog binnen, Diana dankzij de tipparade, de andere via de UK charts.

Hoe een b-kantje zich later met een 2e versie zou ontpoppen tot een wereldhit en dan hebben we het over Men At Work die hun debuutsingle zelf uitbrachten in 1980 met het nummer Keypunch Operator en op de b-kant Down Under in een toch wel behoorlijk andere versie dan dat de meeste kennen.

In Nederland moesten we wachten (1 maart 1982) tot Frits Spits zich ermee ging bemoeien door deze single tot steunplaat te kiezen en zou dit nummer het tot de 2e plaats schoppen in de Top 40.

De originele video is inmiddels 479 miljoen bekeken op YouTube en op Spotify over het miljard heen keer beluisterd en dan kan je best spreken over een populair plaatje dat met recht een wereldhit werd.

Daarmee waren we wel véél eerder dan de US (november 82) en UK (januari 83, toen het in de US eindelijk op 1 stond) om het op te pikken.

Ja, als je de nationaliteit van de band achterhaald en kijkt wanneer een nummer is uitgebracht, is dat vaak (veel) eerder dan in andere landen. Zeker als de band nog onbekend is.
Wij hebben daarom ook al Who can it be now? in onze lijst gehad: de Australische datum van release.
Ik moet wel toegeven dat Down under erg 1982 gevoelens oproept vanwege de samenhang met andere hits in de Top 40 in die tijd. Dat maakt je wat gedesoriënteerd maar is net zo leuk. We herschrijven popgeschiedenis naar waarheid.

New Order pakt nog een week op de eerste plek mee, maar Gichy Dan en EWF stomen stevig op. Van EWF had ik dat niet verwacht, maar het nummer is veel beter dan ik me van hen herinnerde.

Een nieuwe Heaven 17 is ook ijzersterk; funky en cynisch tegelijk. Kim Wilde is lekker melodramatisch, na Kids in America weer een echte topsingle en misschien zelfs wel haar beste. Het nummer van Tears for Fears pas dit jaar ontdekt bij de recente concertfilm; een nieuwe favoriet voor mij, na de al bekende hitsingles.

En gelukkig is ranboy weer net op tijd terug van vakantie, zónder een lijstje te hebben gemist. Mag ook wel eens worden gezegd. Welkom terug en hopelijk was het een fijne periode!

We werden getrakteerd op kunst, veroorzaakt door een Duitse band op komst, maar Skandal im Sperrbezirk, ondanks een schilderij van dubieuze afkomst maar wel met uitleg, kwam deze week nog wat punten tekort. Wel een vrolijk nummer en zeker kansrijk in de komende weken.

Het venijn zat 'm deze week in de staart: er waren veel punten nodig voor in ieder geval een notering in deze lijst. Dan hadden we vijf nieuwe nummers die allemaal sterk presteerden: minimaal 21 punten winst en dan zelfs nog twee boven de dertig. Dat heet stevig binnenkomen met een florissante toekomst voor de boeg.
Ik kan dan ook niet anders dan erkennen dat we ook wel vijf zeer beroemde artiesten van naam hebben binnengehaald, met Queen/David Bowie, Ultravox, ABC, Simple Minds en Kim Wilde. De Anglofielen kunnen hun geluk niet op, de Amerikanen, over andere landen nog gezwegen, kijken behoorlijk achterin.

Dan een beetje een donkere hoes van Queen en David Bowie. Daar zit geen enkele lol aan, geen creatieve uiting of een band in actie. Ik zie ook dat het wereldwijd een zwarte hoes is, in ieder geval in de bekende landen. Het is niet des Queens, als we alle fleurige fotohoesjes van de afgelopen acht jaar nog eens de revue laten passeren. De eerste nummer 1 van de band in Nederland in 2 jaar tijd.

Ook hier het debuut van ABC. Eigenlijk moet iedereen in dit topic toch wel kennis hebben gemaakt met het bijbehorende album The Lexicon of Love.
Het Electric Light Orchestra heeft in ons topic weer eens de eerste plaats gepakt. Ik dacht dat het wel weer even geleden was maar begin juni 1980, inmiddels toch bijna anderhalf jaar geleden, kozen we nog voor Xanadu (samen met Olivia Newton John) op de eerste plek in onze lijst. De tijd vliegt.

Ten slotte mag de opmerkelijk winst van Journey nog even worden genoemd, +27. Hier dan nog Amerikanen die enigszins stand weten te houden tegen alle Engelse muzikale geweld!

John Foxx had zeker nog een interessante opvolger voor Europe after the Rain.
Het is voor hem wel buitengewoon spijtig dat er net nu zulke grote namen met zulke grote titels verschijnen.
In grote getalen, ik had nog wel tien nummers kunnen laten binnenkomen. En het moeten allemaal hits worden dus hoe dat verder gaat.

Nieuwe namen versmelten een beetje met de oude tot een actuele lijst. Alleen worden het er dan alles bij elkaar zoveel en de Rolling Stones bijvoorbeeld moeten hun 20-jarige bestaan nog vieren. En ze zitten allemaal nog zo'n beetje op een schema van 1 a 2 nieuwe albums per jaar en dan vooral daar 4 a 5 singles van af halen.

Enfin, het is een luxe probleem, dat weet ik ook. Maar we gaan op weg naar een spetterende finale, lijkt mij.

week 46 voor 1981 met 4 binnenkomers, maar daarvan wel 2 in de top 10 en nog een in de top 20.
Loverboy uit de US charts, Pretenders en Gogo's uit de tipparade en Kim Wilde uit de UK charts (volgende week ook tipparade).
Gogo's komen gewoon op 1 binnen, ook in de tipparade komen ze best hoog binnen maar gek genoeg halen ze de top 40 helemaal niet. In de US staan ze al een poosje genoteerd maar daar zijn ze erg langzaam stijgend, over een maand halen ze pas hun hoogste positie daar (#20), zo'n beetje in dezelfde week dat ze in Toppop optraden en de tipparade alweer uit vlogen.
Kim Wilde met Cambodia is een van de clips die me van destijds bijgebleven is, waarschijnlijk ook van Toppop waar die regelmatig te zien was. M'n vader vond het ook leuk trouwens, die kocht een paar maand later bij V&D de single uit een uitverkoopbak (samen met maid of orleans)
Pretenders met een kerstsingle en dan nog Loverboy uit Canada met een echte 80s rocker. Ik ken ze ongetwijfeld via Curry & van Inkel en dan vast van Curry.

Sommige titels van de nieuwkomers lijken voor dit lijstje gemaakt te zijn.
Zo komt Centerfold vrijwel in het midden van mijn top 40 terecht en doen de Cars ook goed mee om mijn lijst op te schudden.

De hoogste binnenkomer lijkt echter het antoniem te zijn van wat je zou verwachten. “Up Above” was een betere titel geweest hoewel dat geen gangbare aanduiding is voor dat grote land onder aan de landkaart. Maar de single is in een eerdere uitvoering, Gerdav noemde deze al, in november 1980 al eens bij mijn tips verschenen. Die bleef toen wel down under want die uitvoering vond ik toen net niet goed genoeg. Bubbling under noemen de Amerikaanse lijstenmakers dat ook wel.

Over Amerikaanse lijstenmakers gesproken. Hall and Oates bijvoorbeeld haalde met “Kiss on my list” toen mijn lijst ook niet. Eigenlijk moet ik dat nog altijd rectificeren want dat is een te goede plaat om niet op mijn lijst terecht te komen. Ik wil het niet weer te politiek maken hier maar ik kom wel alsnog op deze buitensluiter terug.

Gelukkig lukt het ze deze week om binnen te komen met hun nieuwste. Maar die buitensluiten, dat kan ik echt niet maken (no can do).
