Niet eens zo'n rustig weekje, want uit de Billboard Charts die gewoon doorgaan viste ik zowaar nog wat tips op. The Fifth Dimension heeft een lekker zonnig soulplaatje gemaakt en met Johnny Cash zit je altijd wel goed. You Showed Me is daarentegen een echte topper. Geweldig nummer. Lange tijd trouwens gedacht dat het origineel van Salt 'n' Pepa was, die er in de jaren '90 nog een top 10 hit mee scoorde. Vond het altijd erg cool dat britpopband The Lightning Seeds later Salt 'n' Pepa coverde, maar die coverde dus het origineel...

En zo had Arthur het laatste woord in onze laatste top 15 van het jaar 1968, want als enige met een notering voor Spirit in zijn lijst. Slechts één nieuwe binnenkomer en voor de rest nauwelijks noemenswaardige verschuivingen.

Hier is dan mijn toplijst van het jaar. Punten staan tussen haakjes. Bij gelijke stand heb ik gewoon het mooiste nummer eerst gezet, lekker subjectief. De nummer 1 van het jaar heeft eigenlijk al het hele jaar vastgestaan, maar toch werd het nog spannend op het einde met I Put A Spell On You. De geweldige cheese-factor van ABBA staat natuurlijk buiten kijf, maar The Hep Stars' Let It Be Me, daar komt Benny niet mee weg. Ik snap gerust dat zoiets bij het einde van een jaar past, maar dit vind ik toch wel zo zweverig, klef en melig, m'n oren gaan ervan klapperen [2].

In de oneindige lijst van Beatles-covers dient zich deze week Wilson Pickett aan.
Hij doet er tenminste echt wat mee, mag gezegd. Goede voordracht, goede begeleiding, alleen vind ik ook deze keer The Beatles zelf beter uit de bus komen. Ik zei laatst iets over het feit dat de Beatles-originals nooit overtroffen worden, maar in het geval van Joe Cocker heb ik dat natuurlijk mis [WP: 6]

Ook The Tremeloes ontkomen niet aan een bepaalde zweverige lodderigheid. Heeft vast te maken met het feit dat het 1968 is én we met de donkere dagen te maken hebben.
Het heeft iets Hollies-achtigs en klinkt niet onaangenaam, maar het is inderdaad niet het type song dat beklijft [5,5].

The Temptations en The Supremes beleven ook duidelijk een december-onderonsje.
Ik vind het wel werken. Het klinkt gezellig en oprecht. Vreemd is het dat het volslagen vergeten lijkt te zijn [8].

De psychedelica van Groep 1850 heeft de tand des tijds duidelijk minder doorstaan. Het klinkt me teveel als knip -en plakwerk, al klinkt de gitaarsolo best lekker. Aan het einde krijgen we nog wat verwrongen tegeltjeswijsheid mee: 'Wie droom omdraait leven krijgt levenslang voor moord'. Juist, ja... [5,5].

Voor Crosstown Traffic heb ik even een ander linkje toegevoegd met een betere geluidskwaliteit. Ik ga hier mee met Herman: Een onbetwiste klassieker van het legendarische Electric Ladyland-album. Ik hoorde het voor het eerst toen het in de zomer van 1990 weer in de Tipparade kwam en ik heb toen gelijk het singletje gekocht met Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) op de b-kant. Ik vond het toen al fantastische muziek en dat is nooit en te nimmer veranderd [10].

Het Iveys-liedje Maybe Tomorrow is eigenlijk de debuut-single van Badfinger. Het gaat hier namelijk om precies dezelfde band. Het tragische verhaal van Badfinger mag inmiddels bekend zijn: Een hele hoop financiële problemen vanwege het wanbeleid van het Apple-label (waarbij ze zaten), een genadeloze smeerlap van een manager die de groep bij elke gelegenheid financieel leek uit te knijpen en twee uit de ellende voortvloeiende zelfmoordgevallen. Maar dat is hier nog niet aan de orde. Maybe Tomorrow vind ik eigenlijk wel een fijn liedje, al laat het nog geen eigenheid horen. Het is ook wat minder stevig dan het werk dat hierna zou volgen. Opzienbarend is anders, maar ik mag het wel [6,5].

Jimi Hendrix - Crosstown Traffic
De geluidskwaliteit is inderdaad veel beter. Dit nummer heeft niet die status van Voodoo Chile (zullen wij pas in 1970 tegenkomen) of All Along the Watchover maar uiteindelijk is dit weer klasse, ik verhoog naar 8,5.

Dat droevig verhaal van Badfinger is inderdaad bekend. Deze band was korte tijd enorm populair, ze werden om diverse reden ook steeds met Beatles vergeleken maar dan kwam de afgrond. Maybe Tomorrow is niet onaardig (krijgt een 6) maar hun latere Badfinger-hits vind ik beter (van Badfinger moet ik eens een compilatie zien te vinden).

Ik wil dit lijstje er toch graag bij blijven doen, in 1969. Daarom moet 1968 natuurlijk wel goed worden afgesloten.
En dan net in de laatste week van de Veronica Top 40 vijf ijzersterke nieuwe nummers, hoe krijg je het voor elkaar. Dusdanig, dat ik op 20 even 2 nummers moest parkeren.

Ik moet mijn aanvankelijke aarzelingen bij Cuby and the Blizzards en de Beach Boys maar even laten varen, prima nummers bij nadere beluistering.

Het overbekende Glimlach van een kind van Willy Alberti laat ik dan nog zitten, als nieuwe binnenkomer...

Verdwenen is Ob-la-di ob-la-da van de Bedrocks.
Een wat bizar lijstje, duidelijk onder invloed van de jaarlijkse slechte start van de verkopen van singles. Alles blijft een beetje gelijk. Alleen de Marmalade doet een merkwaardig stapje terug, van 1 naar 3 terwijl het nummer juist de vorige week van 7 naar 1 was gestegen.

Een echte nieuwe binnenkomer hebben we ook al niet. De Isley Brothers zijn natuurlijk gewoon een oude bekende die toevallig de week er voor nog op 22 stond.

Treurigheid in de zin van 'echt' nieuw. Marvin Gaye komt volgens mij voor de 3e of de 4e keer opnieuw binnen met hetzelfde nummer. Martha Reeves is natuurlijk weliswaar prachtig maar is inmiddels ook weer aan een volgende opmars begonnen. De eerste keer verscheen Dancing in the Street in 1964.

Gelukkig 1969... eh 2013 iedereen.

En meteen ook met een speciaal geval als hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer. Niet alleen omwille van de samples avant la lettre in het nummer, maar ook omdat ik nergens heb kunnen vinden wanneer dit nummer precies uitkwam. Het moederalbum is alvast uitgebracht op twee januari 1968, er is een EP die ook in 1968 is uitgebracht, maar bij de single staat 1969 dan weer als releasejaar. Heel vaag allemaal, maar het is een schitterend nummer en daarom wil ik deze wel opnemen in mijn lijstje voor zijn grootste hit over een maand of twee wordt uitgebracht. Jullie hopelijk ook!

Oh ja, The Beach Boys komen ook nog binnen, op 13.

Nieuw op 7: Ring Of Fire van Eric Burdon And The Animals. Beroemd geworden door Johnny Cash, door velen gecoverd, maar deze versie is mijn favoriet. Het nummer begint met achtergrondzang dat doet denken aan het al even geweldige nummer “From the Underworld” van The Herd. Vervolgens neemt Eric Burdon de leadzang op een dusdanige eigen wijze over, dat het nummer in de verste verte niet meer lijkt op die van Johnny Cash. Cijfer: 9,5

Nieuw op 11: Proud Mary van Creedence Clearwater Revival. CCR scoorde dankzij frontman en songwriter John Fogerty de ene na de andere kwaliteitshit. Deze uitvoering heeft altijd mijn voorkeur gehad boven die van Ike & Tina Turner. Cijfer: 9.

Nieuw op 14: Le Meteque Met deze beroemde chanson brak de Franse zanger componist Georges Moustaki internationaal door. Cijfer: 8,5

Wat ik me zo afvroeg: staan er eigenlijk ook nog andere hitparades dan de Nederlandse, Engelse en Amerikaanse uit deze periode online? Niet dat ik die op de voet wil gaan volgen, maar ben bv. wel benieuwd naar de precieze releasedata van singles van Os Mutantes (Braziliaans) en Serge Gainsbourg.

Zo, 1969 is met een kleine schoonmaak begonnen. Vier nieuwe binnenkomers, afscheid werd er genomen van nummers van Tim Buckley, Pink Floyd, The Move en Canned Heat.

Nostalgic Toilet van Cuby and the Blizzards en Bluebirds over the Mountain van de Beach boys zijn inmiddels al besproken.

The Steve Miller Band kwam met het album Sailor waarvan als eerste de single Dear Mary werd afgehaald:

Niet de originele opname, die wordt om auteursrechtelijke redenen geband op Youtube, daarom even een live versie uit 2010. Ook mooi.

Wat ook aan veel mensen in die tijd voorbij is gegaan, is de single Shine on Brightly van Procol Harum. Prachtig nummer van het gelijknamige album, dat ook rond die tijd werd uitgebracht.

Dit lijstje drukt mij een beetje met de neus op de feiten, als ik mij verplicht om wekelijks de nieuwe singles uit de Top 40 te draaien.

Geen idee wat mij stond te wachten bij In your life van Tower en Race with the Devil van The Gun. Hoewel ik dacht ze eigenlijk al een keer vluchtig te hebben gehoord, als tip of als aanrader uit één van de andere lijsten.

Prima en sterke nummers. Opgeteld bij Albatross kunnen we spreken bij een beregoeie week inzake nieuwe binnenkomers. Dat belooft nog wat voor 1969! Ik ga hier ook de punten van bijhouden, dan weet ik ook gelijk hoe ik aan het einde van het jaar over de gehele Veronica Top 40 heb gedacht!

Shine on Brightly op single.

Het is ook niet voor niets op elk verzamelalbum van Procol Harum terug te vinden!

1969 alweer; ik word drie dit jaar en de oudste herinneringen gaan zo ver terug; helaas nog geen muzikale herinneringen.

Drie prima binnenkomers; Eric Burdon trekt Ring of fire helemaal naar zich toe, en Procol Harum rockt op het heftige Shine on brightly.

is het de bedoeling om een top 15 op te stellen?

Een wekelijkse top 15, inderdaad. Je kan het vergelijken met de musicmeterafrekening, maar dan voor 1969 in plaats van voor 2013. Op zondag is er ook altijd een algemene lijst. Interesse?

Koudwatervrees! Gewoon aan beginnen, er een klein beetje een wekelijkse discipline op na houden en je bent er aan gewend.

In het begin is het misschien even wat meer werk, maar je zou een top 15 kunnen samenstellen uit de lijstjes van Arthur, Heicro, Musician, Ranboy en ik (waar ook veel overlap in zit). Daarnaast bespreken Kaztor en Luc wekelijks de tipparade, waar ook leuke tips uit de halen zijn. Als je eenmaal je eerste lijstje hebt, is het een kwestie van bijhouden. Het kost mij per week niet zoveel tijd eigenlijk. Het helpt ook wel dat de liedjes in deze tijd nog niet zo lang duurde, mijn top 15 duurt eigenlijk nooit langer dan 50 minuten en die draai ik elk weekend wel een keer af.

17. Leo Den Hop - Antoinette
De eerste hitsingle die Jack De Nijs (de latere Jack Jersey) schreef. Enkel geschikt voor carnaval om dan snel te vergeten.

18. Herman's Hermits - Something's Happening
Dan veel liever zo'n popsong. Weliswaar simpel en vrij knullig maar erg charmant en daar heeft de zang van Peter Noone veel mee te maken. Overigens kende ik dit eerst in de Franse versie (van Joe Dassin).

19. Roek's Family - Get Yourself A Ticket
Duidelijk gebaseerd op Hey Jude van the Beatles zoals het ritme en die nanana's. Toch vind ik dit een best aardig nummer die ook blijft hangen.

20. The Bedrocks - Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
20. Arthur Conley - Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
Naast een Beatles-kopie krijgen wij nu twee (!) covers van dat overbekende Beatlesnummer. Dat van The Bedrocks klinkt amusant, niet meer en niet minder, dat van Arthur Conley heeft een ietsje meer soul en eigenheid.

We beginnen het jaar meteen goed met wat leuke nieuwe releases van Georges Moustaki en CCR, die beide nog wel even in de wachtkamer blijven. Wel is er plek voor een nieuwe nummer 1, want Bonnie and Clyde is ronduit fantastisch (ik nomineerde het ook voor de MuMe-ladder). Prachtnummer, mede door dat maffe hoge geluid van de uit de Braziliaanse samba-muziek afkomstige cuíca-trommel. Wat een vondst van Gainsbourg omdat hier te gebruiken. Tenslotte is er ook nog een plekje voor een sfeervolle tranentrekker van Smokey Robinson, waarin vooral de opvallend funky brug op valt.

Het doek viel voor The Fifth Dimension's California Soul en Nina Simone's Aint Go No I Got Life. Die laatste was de langsgenoteerde plaat uit de lijst, dus zo laten we alweer een stukje 1968 achter ons.
