En zo verscheen één van de mooiste, in ieder geval ook een van de opvallendste singles van het jaar, Popcorn van Hot Butter.
Je leert veel van dit topic, ik had werkelijk niet gedacht dat dit nummer voor het eerst had toegeslagen in de VS.

Zo kon ik mij ook niets meer voorstellen bij Waiting for the sun van Bolland en Bolland. Ja, wel iets bij dat duo. Maar toen ik de single weer eens hoorde wist ik weer gelijk: aha, dat is dat bekende nummer. Misschien wel ook één van hun beste.

En dan eentje uit de reeks hits desoriëntatie: Zing went the strings of my heart van de Trammps. Wij weten uiteraard niet beter dan december 1975/januari 1976. Maar het nummer is toch echt al van juni 1972. Billboard staat ook hier klaar voor een hitnotering.

De meest bizarre verschijning is het debuut van het Electric Light Orchestra. Dan hoor je toch wel, dat er in de loop van de tientallen jaren behoorlijk wat aan het geluid is geschaafd. Danig geschaafd + het inruilen van alle personeel in de loop van de tijd, gereduceerd tot uiteindelijk een onemanband. Jeff Lynne's eigen Brexit, ware het niet dat de anderen ook Engelse muzikanten waren.

Uiteindelijk slechts 3 nieuwe binnenkomers, en dan op 18, 19 en 20. Een voorzichtige start, waar, door de lage punten aantallen, er wel vrij snel op en neer kan worden geschoven.

Want laag zijn ze. In totaal worden er 1050 punten verdeeld. Daarvan staan er 389 niet in deze lijst. Dat is eigenlijk een te hoog percentage. En je kunt met drie noteringen in een lijst er mee bovenaan komen te staan!

Zo, even een wat rustiger weekje en gelijk even een grote schoonmaak. Een Top 40 is weer heel wat meer werk dan een Top 30.

Janis Joplin werd node gemist maar gelukkig brachten ze af en toe toch nog wel een single van haar uit. Het nummer komt wat hoger binnen dan Happy van de Rolling Stones. Het nummer is van het zwaar bejubelde Exile on main Street.
Maar over missen gesproken: Bij de Stones werd Brian Jones toch wel gemist.

Martial, luigifort,ranboy, johan de witt en LucM, ik ben na vandaag een week met vakantie. Volgende week zondag ben ik weer terug.
De lijst van a.s. zondag mag uiteraard door iemand anders worden gedaan. Er kan natuurlijk ook worden gewacht tot volgende week, dan doe ik er twee. Tot volgende week!

11. The Who - Join Together
Een niet zo bekend nummer van The Who maar wel vindingrijk met name de intro en combinatie van gitaar en synthesizer. Natuurlijk is er ook de krachtige zang en meezingrefrein, zou beslist inslaan op het festival van Werchter.
Cijfer: 8,5

16. Mac & Katie Kissoon - Sing Along
Dit is natuurlijk een stuk meer poppy maar met soul en vitaliteit en ook dit nummer heeft een refrein dat je dadelijk meezingt.

20. Stephen Stills/Manassas - So Begins The Task
Doet nog sterk aan Crosby, Stills & Nash denken door de overigens fijne samenzang, het nummer heeft ook een wat mystieke, landelijke sfeer en het psychedelisch aandoend einde is subliem.

24. CUB - I'm Going Home
Geen clip gevonden.

25. Anneke Konings (Andeane) - Lovers Bye Bye
Lang niet meer gehoord, haar uitspraak is niet perfect maar het is geen slecht nummer met folky tintje en degelijk orkest.

26. Sammy Davis, Jr. (with The Mike Curb Congregation) - The Candy Man
Smaakvolle mengeling van retro-jazz en soul van een door mij bijna vergeten talentvolle zanger, van deze man moet ik beslist een compilatie-album aanschaffen.

27. The Song Of The Family - Niemand Is Graag Alleen
Waarom klinken vele Nederlandstalige nummers van die tijd nu zo melig? Op zich een aardig liedje maar de gedateerde, stroperige zang en arrangementen doen teveel roet in het eten.

28. Peter Lelasseux - Oh Rosana
Dit nummer is niet beter hoewel ik het Franstalige genre doorgaans wel kan waarderen. Maar dit is mij te klef vooral door het vervelende refrein en nu terecht vergeten.

Dutch psychedelica? Ik hoor daar invloeden van Moody Blues in door de symfonische begeleiding maar het is toch vrij eigenzinnig. Had inderdaad meer verdiend dan een tipnotering.

30. Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina - Nobody But You
Een zoveelste kloon van Crosby, Stills & Nash, in zijn genre onderscheidt het nummer zich niet genoeg om hun voorbeelden te overtreffen, integendeel.

We nemen deze week de honneurs waar voor musician (vakantie) wat betreft de puntentelling en er gebeurd gelijk van alles, de nummer 1 komt nog niet in het geding en is en blijft in handen van Deep Purple, maar daarachter komt direct de hoogste nieuweling binnenstormen op nummer 2 het zeer herkenbare deuntje van Hot Butter met Popcorn.

Electric Light Orchestra en Hawkwind vliegen werkelijk door de lijst heen in hun 2e week en is de opmerkelijke vrije val van Alice Cooper van nummer 2 naar 19 een opvallend feit

Naast Hot Butter zijn de Carpenters en Bolland & Bolland de andere nieuwkomers in de lijst.

1. Gary Glitter - Rock And Roll
Deze man is meer omstreden door zijn pedofilie-affaire dan door zijn muziek. Los daarvan is dit een erg simpel maar amusant nummer mede dankzij de sax en opzwepende drums.
Cijfer: 7

11. Bolland & Bolland - Wait For The Sun
Op de zon is het nu inderdaad wachten en toen - denk ik - ook. Een zoveelste variant van Simon & Garfunkel / Crosby & Nash maar het exotisch tintje zorgt toch nog wat voor eigenheid.
Cijfer: 7

15. Gilbert O'Sullivan - Ooh-Wakka-Doo-Wakka-Day
Lijkt een niemendalletje vanwege de titel maar het een erg charmant nummer door zijn accent en de eenvoud. De melodie blijft geheid in je hoofd hangen.

18. Tony Marshall - Ich Fang' Für Euch Den Sonnenschein
Dit is ook simpel maar van die nietszeggende vrolijkheid (holahi jahoo) wat typisch is voor dit soort carnavaleske schlagers. Goed voor in de kroeg met enkele pinten op.

20. Bobby Vinton - Sealed With A Kiss
Ik wist pas later dat het een cover is van Brian Hyland maar wel geloofwaardig gebracht, de sfeer van een troosteloze zomer komt goed naar voren. Terechte evergreen.

26. Neil Young & Graham Nash & Stray Gators - War Song
Het blijkt een B-kant te zijn, ik vind dit nummer in ieder geval op geen enkel album van hem (en ik heb al zoveel van Neil Young). Uiteraard een protestsong waarbij de boodschap het belangrijkste lijkt te zijn al is het zeker niet slecht gebracht.

27. Carpenters - It's Going To Take Some Time
Softpop die niets van haar glans en charme heeft verloren door de vrij unieke warme stem van Karen Carpenter en de vlekkeloze, rijke en sfeervolle arrangementen.

28. Della Reese - If It Feels Good, Do It
Een vrij onbekend gebleven zangeres die met jazz begon en toen naar soul is overgestapt. Niet erg bijzondere maar degelijke, ritmische song met sterke zang.
Cijfer: 7

29. Lindisfarne - Lady Eleanor
Lang niet meer gehoord maar prachtig nummer: sfeervol en melancholiek, ligt tussen folk en progrock met vrij eigenzinnige arrangementen. Dit moet uit de vergetelheid worden gehaald!

30. The Hearts Of Soul - It's Great Fun!
Ik hoor daar teveel jatterij in nl. van Middle of the Road (Samson & Delilah). Vrolijk (wat de titel belooft) maar ook vrij banaal.

Het is genieten geblazen deze week met de nieuwkomers met als klapperrrrrrrrrrrrrr van de week dat muzikale pareltje van Bread met The Guitar Man, een prachtplaatje nog steeds

Ook Garden Party van Rick Nelson met zijn Stone Canyon Band is herkenbaarheid troef, een heel fijn country deuntje om naar te luisteren.

Bij Arlo Guthrie zullen misschien niet direct alle alarmbellen afgaan, maar met de Nederlandstalige versie van dit nummer scoorde Gerard Cox in 1973 een gigantische hit en wat tevens een ongekende klassieker werd en in die tijd woonde Gerard Cox niet zo heel ver bij mij vandaan (een paar deuren maar )

Het al eerder aangehaalde herkenbaarheid troef geldt natuurlijk ook voor The O'Jays met Back Stabbers ook al zo'n heerlijk nummer.

Zo weer terug en gelijk aan de slag! Veel dank aan Martial voor het maken van de lijst van vorige week!

Tijdens vakantie o.a. geweest bij een geweldige concertdag in Hyde Park in Londen. Met. o.a. de 1972 oudjes Carole King ("now you know how 74 looks like!!") die vitaal haar complete album Tapestry ten gehore bracht en Eagle Don Henley, die op een vijftal nummers na vooral uit eigen repertoire putte.

Bijna had ik vandaag weer een Top 40 overwogen, sowieso 7 prachtige nieuwe songs, maar ik ben maar gewoon zo streng geweest weg te strepen wat onder de meet terecht was gekomen.

Met nogmaals dank aan Ed voor het overnemen van de lijst van de vorige week, hierbij de nieuwe. Ik moet zeggen met wel wat minder spektakel dan het laatste weekend. Maar 10 punten meer of minder kan leiden tot een plek bovenin of juist onderin de Top 20.

En dan hadden we deze week de spanning aan de top. Waar Popcorn niet wist door te stoten naar de 1e plek maar waar E.L.O. het heft in handen nam.
Opzienbarend is natuurlijk ook dat 3 leden van dit panel Child in time op 1 hebben staan maar dat dat niet voldoende is voor het handhaven van de bovenste plek.

1. Chris Hodge - We're On Our Way
Verschenen op het Apple-label van The Beatles en zijn enige hit (nadien niets meer van gehoord). Redelijk maar niet opzienbarend nummer dat nog uit de sixties afkomstig lijkt te zijn met een snuifje glamrock.
Cijfer: 6,5

11. George Harrison - Bangle-Desh
Toevallig komt nu net een ex-Beatle langs. George Harrison klinkt wanhopig maar zingt met overgave en de fijne, net niet te volle productie.
Cijfer: 8

15. Corry - Jij Hebt Me Bedrogen
Haar nummers klonken toen vrijwel hetzelfde en zijn voorspelbaar en melig. Misschien vakkundig gebracht maar het doet mij weinig.
Cijfer: 3

16. Roberta Flack - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
Softsoul dat in enkel 's avonds zou draaien maar van hoog niveau door haar zang en frasering en de romantische sfeer.
Cijfer: 8,5

18. Los Diablos - Oh, Oh, July
Wederom een nummer dat door de vakantietoeristen naar hier lijkt gebracht. Zomers maar niet opzienbarend.

20. Axis - Someone
Vond ik destijds nog aardig maar nu doet het mij niets meer wellicht door de steeds herhalende melodie. Een geval van de tand des tijds niet doorstaan.

26. The Chi-Lites - Have You Seen Her
De softsoul van toen mag nu nog steeds gehoord worden. Weliswaar wat gladjes maar prima vocalen en samenzang en smaakvolle begeleiding.
Cijfer: 8

27. Hanny en De Rekels - Mario
Is van hetzelfde laken een pak als dat nummer van Corry, je kunt ze nauwelijks van elkaar onderscheiden.
Cijfer: 3

28. Bata Illic - Michaela
Dit soort Duitse schlagers zijn ook niet aan mij besteed maar er waren toen veel liefhebbers daarvan. Nou ja, plezier ermee.
Cijfer: 3,5

29. Prince Buster - Dance Cleopatra Dance
Stokoude ska hadden wij nog niet gehad dit jaar, dat komt nu ook eens langs. Ik vind het wel gezellig klinken misschien juist door de ouderwetse sfeer.
Cijfer: 6,5

30. Glenn Miller Orchestra Directed By Buddy De Franco - In The Mood
Van deze versie vind ik geen clip, het origineel zou 8,5 hebben gekregen (nog ouder maar oergezellig).

Er werd in het verleden vaak gezegd dat de Nederlandse hitlijsten zo verschrikkelijk actueel en bij de tijd waren.
Ik heb dat altijd voor waarheid aangenomen.

In realiteit liepen we, blijkt meer en meer, soms maanden tot wel jaren achter op belangrijke releasedata.
Dat is nu vooral teleurstellend als je in die tijd ook de hitlijsten nauwlettend volgde en de transistorradio zelfs meeging naar het zwembad of het strand van Katwijk of Scheveningen.

Ben van Michael Jackson is voor je gevoel van december/januari 1973, People need love van Björn, Benny, Anna & Frida de opvolger van Ring Ring (zomer 1973) en Easy livin' van Uriah Heep zelfs van het najaar van 1973.

Dus hoezo actueel.
Gelukkig is er nog Alexander Curly, I'll never drink again is voor het gevoel nog echt 1972.

Nu wil het geval, dat ik met 30 platen in de lijst eigenlijk niet eens ruimte heb voor Abba en Michael Jackson. Misschien bij de Nederlandse releasedatum een nieuwe poging...
