Als de rook om je hoofd is verdwenen - Boudewijn de Groot

En de invloed van de lijst van Marzipaintree laat zich voor een aantal artiesten gelijk uitbetalen. De O' Jays stormen nieuw de top 10 binnen maar de band Hot Butter zal weer zijn teleurgesteld... Aan de andere kant kan zelfs een extra eerste plaats voor Deep Purple niet voorkomen, dat Lynne en zijn Orkest bovenaan blijven staan.

Persoonlijk ben ik blij met net dat extra zetje voor Jim Croce. Zelfs de meest bescheiden plek in de lijst levert in ieder geval een plekje in de geschiedenis op.

2. Hot Butter / The Popcorn Makers / Anarchic System - Popcorn
Legendarische hit omdat dit de eerste volledig elektronische instrumentale hit is en de melodie blijft in je hoofd hangen. De eerste 2 verschillen niet van elkaar (is dat één en dezelfde uitvoerder?), de derde wijkt lichtjes af (de intro).
Cijfer: 8,5

15. Wilma - Waarom Laat Iedereen Mij Zo Alleen
Geen clip gevonden, wel die van Hanny (en die zou ik 3 geven).

17. Pink Floyd - Free Four
Een lichtvoetige Pink Floyd dat een hit had kunnen en mogen worden. Heeft niettemin dat kenmerkende, duistere, mystieke sfeer en prima gitaarwerk. Doet mij wel denken aan Norman Greenbaum - Spirit In The Sky (week 12 van 1970).
Cijfer: 8,5

18. The Tremeloes - I Like It That Way
The Tremeloes hebben steeds gemakkelijk in het oor liggende pop gebracht en dat is met dit nummer niet anders. Steekt ritmisch en productioneel wel goed in elkaar (zoals die violen).
Cijfer: 7

22. Ciska Peters - Jelskedije (Jeg Elsker Dig)
Geen clip gevonden.

24. Minisink Townhouse - Upstairs 52
Deze bans zal niemand nog kennen. Geen onaardige country van Nederlandse bodem maar te weinig onderscheidend en de uitspraak is in dit genre wel storend.
Cijfer: 5,5

25. The Walkers - Taboo
Een feestnummer met kermissfeer dat voor een keertje voor mij wel kan maar natuurlijk stelt het niet veel voor.
Cijfer: 5

26. Focus - Tommy
Van pretentieloze feestmuziek naar serieuze progrock, alles kon blijkbaar in 1972. Doet mij een beetje aan Santana denken (die gitaar) maar erg knap uitgevoerd en sfeervol.

27. Raspberries - Don't Want To Say Goodbye
Voor mij totaal onbekend, klinkt best aardig met name de vocalen maar wel sentimenteel en ook wat te weinig eigenheid.
Cijfer: 6

28. Country Fair - Please Come Home
Wederom onbekend voor mij, is inderdaad countrypop maar ook hier te weinig eigenheid (lonkt teveel naar hun voorbeelden) en zang en uitspraak konden ook beter.
Cijfer: 4,5

29. Bee Gees - Run To Me
Bee Gees hebben wel een duidelijk herkenbare zang (itt. de vorige twee uitvoerders) al is dit nummer iets te sentimenteel (maar dat past bij hun stijl). Een gemiddeld cijfer dan maar want zij hebben betere nummers.
Cijfer: 6

30. The Jimmy Castor Bunch - Troglodyte (Cave Man)
Moeilijk te beoordelen, het sfeer van de holbewoners wordt hier inderdaad treffend weergegeven maar anderzijds kan het na een tijd vervelen.

Alleen bekende of (op)nieuw gevonden klassiekers die binnenkomen in de lijst, allemaal prachtig. Waarbij de subcultuur van die tijd weer eens mooi botst met erkende hitparade krakers.

Yes kwam met een meer dan 10 minuten durende symfonische versie van America, de bekende hit van Simon & Garfunkel. Niet dat het op een album terecht kwam, dat gebeurde pas veel later op de verzamelaar Yesterdays.
Voor de single werd het nummer in tijd behoorlijk teruggeschroefd. Maar wel zeer verdienstelijk.

Mwah, ik vind het zelf toch een behoorlijke verkrachting van het mooie nummer van Simon & Garfunkel, maar gelukkig kunnen we dan ook weer met gemak terugvallen op "het smaken verschillen" aspect

Beatles-cover?

(Ik voel me bij het doorlezen als gast in eigen topic).

Volgens mij was het voor de BBC gedaan als thema-melodie voor iets. Het staat volgens mij op The Box. Ik kan dan mooi even de aandacht vestigen op de weergaloze b-kant W. Ik ben er een maandje of wat laat me, maar wat zou het:

W ken ik dan weer wel heel goed, het stond op een verzamelalbum dat mijn kennismaking met VDGG was (Repeat performance). Inderdaad een weergaloos nummer, ik zie het altijd als het meest sombere nummer aller tijden. Vooral de slotregel hakt erin.

Ik mis nog het lijstje van luigifort, vermoedelijk was hij dit weekend druk..

15. Demis Roussos - My Reason
Zijn eerste solo-hits kan ik nog steeds hebben. Melancholieke song - sentimenteel maar niet té - waar zijn herkenbare jammerende stem perfect in past en de (Griekse) begeleiding geeft het nummer nog meer kleur en sfeer.
Cijfer: 8

21. Donnie Elbert - I Can't Help Myself - Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch
Een bekend nummer van Four Tops voorzien van een Supremes-ritme (ook al bij Motown), klinkt enigszins grappig maar toch een leuke cover.
Cijfer: 7

22. Poppys - Penelopie
Aardig kinderliedje dat volwassener klinkt dan de meeste andere kinderliedjes gezien de tekst. De orgel is een leuke toevoeging.
Cijfer: 7

26. Vicky Leandros - Comme Je Suis
Deze dame komt net als Demis Roussos ook uit Griekenland. Dit nummer vind ik niet onder doen voor haar winnende nummer op het ESF (heeft iets weg van Those Were the Days van May Hopkin, zie week 36 van 1968). Jammer dat ze nadien overstapte naar kleffe schlagers.

Een guilty pleasure hoewel je dit niet van mij zou verwachten vanwege de melodie, de meezingtekst en de Griekse arrangementen.

Totaal onbekend voor mij en ik vind enkele deze clip met matige geluidskwaliteit. Matig nummer, vocaal en tekstueel ondanks die niet onaardige piano.

Dit kende ik ook niet maar ik hoor allerlei elementen uit vroegere nummers. Er zit zeker wat in dit nummer maar het is een tikkeltje banaal.

Geweldige nieuwe binnenkomers, we beginnen er weer tegen aan te lopen dat er veel meer goede nummers zijn dan plaatsen in de lijst. Mijn eeuwige frustratie.

Tja en dan tegelijkertijd met het debuut van Roxy Music deze week. Je leert altijd wat, maar ik was al weer vergeten dat het nummer oorspronkelijk niet op het juist uitgebrachte eerste album van Roxy Music stond. Dat is pas jaren later gecorrigeerd of eigenlijk aangepast.

De uitstekende single Virginia plain komt bij mij volgende week binnen. Die is van augustus 1972.
Opvallend is het opnieuw stijgen van Al green in de lijst, deze week naar nr. 15. Dat heeft die te danken aan "Disclosure met Feel Like I Do" die het goed doet in de lijst 2016 en op deze single gebaseerd is. Zo blijken nummers van nu ook de lijst van 1972 te kunnen beïnvloeden.

Wellicht worden de Seals and Crofts de grootste bedreiging van E.L.O., zij maken nog een aanzienlijke winst. Waar directe belagers Child in time en The Guitar man inmiddels in de negatieve spiraal zitten.

Ik ken het van de geweldige I Prophecy Disaster verzamelaar, maar het staat ook op de box.

Opmerkelijke single door de jengelende gitaar (wat de titel belooft), verder een rustige, sfeervolle en vooral tijdloze song.
Cijfer: 8,5

20. Debbie - Live With Love
Een nummer dat ik niet slecht vind maar het boeit mij ook weinig en haar zang staat mij bij momenten ook tegen, met name als ze in de hoogte gaat.
Cijfer: 5

21. Derek and The Dominos - Layla
Zie week 23 van 1971.

22. Oscar Harris and The Twinkle Stars - Mary
Dit klinkt stroperig en heel erg belegen, ook anno 1972 klinkt dit erg oubollig, het lijkt alsof Engelbert Humperdinck terug is opgekomen.

27. Nico Haak en De Paniekzaaiers - Tango Johnny
Sommige nummers van hem vind ik leuk en grappig maar dit laat ik liever aan mij voorbij gaan.

28. Alexander Curly - I'll Never Drink Again
Het is voor Nederlanders (en Belgen) niet gemakkelijk om in het Engels te zingen. Geen slecht nummer maar zijn tekst (It don't matter bv.) en uitspraak zijn allesbehalve. Toch werd dat een nr.1-hit in Nederland.

29. The Beach Boys - Marcella
Meer dan degelijke Beach Boy-song met hun typische samenzang en vrij avontuurlijke arrangementen (klinkt nog 60's) maar hun hoogtijdagen lijken toch wel voorbij.

30. Looking Glass - Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)
Een nummer dat niemand kwaad zal doen maar ook wat vlakjes en het blijft niet hangen. Begrijpelijk in de vergetelheid geraakt.
