1. Peter Skellern - You're A Lady
Een georkestreerde pianoballad, ingetogen, bijna fluisterend gezongen maar niet zonder emotie. De sublieme koor doet mij het cijfer toch wat optrekken.

11. Gilbert O'Sullivan - Clair
Sympathiek en charmant nummer, pakkende melodie en tekst en leuk begin en einde. De violen verhogen de sfeer zonder stroperig te zijn.
Cijfer: 8,5

20. Donna Hightower - This World Today Is A Mess
Over dit soulnummer kan ik ook niets slechts zeggen. Niet de grootste soulklassieker maar wel één die bijblijft en de zang is natuurlijk ook prima.

27. Eagles - Witchy Woman
Ook niets mis met Eagles, toch niet in hun beginperiode. Melodieuze, wat melancholieke en sfeervolle countryrock met fraaie samenzang.

28. Jack De Nijs Sextet - Marian
Een vrolijk niemendalletje met flauwe rijmelarij, dit is in tegenstelling tot de vorige 4 nummers om te vergeten.
Cijfer: 3,5

29. Redbone - Fais-Do
Dit is funkrock avant la lettre met een eigen geluid en sublieme ritmesectie, deze band en dit nummer verdienen beslist meer erkenning.
Cijfer: 8,5

30. Gert en Hermien - Shalalie Shalala
Heeft Vader Abraham voor dat eurovisiesongfestivalnummer van Sieneke in 2010 zijn inspiratie daar vandaan gehaald? Erg kleffe schlager op reggae-ritme getoonzet (dat maakt het iets minder erg).

Ben deze week gevallen voor argumenten van een aantal ingebrachte songs van vorige week, vooral van Marzipaintree.
Nieuwe nummers voor mij maar verder op zich natuurlijk prima. Onvoorstelbaar hoe dicht Van Kooten en de Bie in 1975 zijn gebleven bij het origineel van de Everly Brothers.

Deze week is ook de week van de opkomst van Steely Dan. Een zeer bewierrookt duo, kwalitatief zeer hoogstaande albums. En ik vind zelf eigenlijk de eerste periode, vanaf Do it Again, gelijk de beste.

Omdat ik eigenlijk van plan ben om elke zaterdagavond mijn lijstje te plaatsen ben ik ook deze keer weer laat.
Ongeveer hetzelfde gevoel roept nummer 22 op als Gerry en Joe wederom laat thuiskomen.
Deze single werd op 20 oktober 1972 uitgebracht in Engeland en in Nederland pas in juni 1973 een hit.
Maar in Engeland deed die nagenoeg niets.
Dan maar beter laat dan nooit.

Een nieuwe lijst voor een nieuwe week! America houdt stand en blijkt nog steeds gemiddeld genomen de meest favoriete plaat.
Zodra we allemaal punten geven werkt dat succesvol, beter dan een paar hoge noteringen en bij anderen niet.

Dat maakt dat de Temptations het ook niet redden, ook al hebben ze met 18,75 punten het hoogste gemiddelde. Ook Children of the Revolution (gemiddelde 18,33) ondervindt het probleem.

America zit op een gemiddelde van 15,6 maar staat wel bovenaan.

Een cover van Gilbert O'Sullivan (zie week 11) maar met een eigen tekst die prachtig en erg nostalgisch is. Doet niet onder voor het origineel.

4. Mouth & MacNeal - You-Kou-La-Le-Lou-Pi
De titel (wat betekent dat?) is mij nog het meest bijgebleven. Klinkt nu te niemendallerig en heeft daardoor de tand des tijds niet goed doorstaan.

10. Greenfield & Cook - Melody
Een beetje de Nederlandse Crosby, Stills & Nash of Simon & Garfunkel maar compositorisch een trapje lager. Toch een genietbare single mede door hun stemmenwerk.

26. Airline - He Was Very Kind To Me
Een nummer met (nu wat gedateerde) synthesizerklanken en leuk ritme en melodie maar haar zang ligt mij niet echt. Een voldoende dan maar.

27. Dutch Spring - Saturday Morning
Geen clip gevonden.

28. America - Ventura Highway
Vlotte en luchtige folky popsong met aangenaam gitaar- en stemmenwerk. Niet echt opzienbarend maar fris en tijdloos.

29. Marius Monkau - Leven Zonder Liefde Is Zonde Om Te Leven

Zij zou een grote hit scoren met het gelijkaardige Go Like Elija maar dit nummer is vrijwel even sterk al spreekt het net iets minder aan. Haar zang en die jazzy saxofoon vind ik hier de grootste pluspunten.

Vorige week kwam Jethro Tull bij mij op 14 binnen met Livin' in the past. Dankzij privéresearch ivm de jaren 60 KO zag ik dat deze song bij mij al voluit punten had verzameld en in principe zet ik een plaat niet twee keer in mijn lijst, dus is hij nu al eruit gevallen. Gelukkig genoeg goeie nieuwe, dus geen probleem!

Het is echt een geweldige week met nieuwe binnenkomers, grandioos.
Verreweg de meesten waren door jullie al genoemd. Ik heb dan nog de nieuwe Yes, Elton John en één van de band Festival.

Nooit van gehoord? Het is gewoon een opname van 10cc, vlak voordat ze 10cc werden. Toen Donna een hit was geweest, herinnerde iedereen zich deze nog. Dus waarom ook niet direct op single gezet.

Yes heeft, ben ik bang, één van z'n allerlaatste, grote symfonische hits uitgebracht, het overwelmende And you and I (formeel gesproken part 1) van het album Close to the Edge. Hierna zou Yes het dubbelalbum Tales from Topographic Oceans uitbrengen. Met daarop 4 nummers, per LP-kant 1 song. Dat zou niet leiden tot een single. Na Tales zou Rick Wakeman Yes verlaten, om pas in 1977 voor twee albums terug te keren.

Toch verrassend, die eerste plek voor Clair. Gilbert o'Sullivan deed het al niet zo slecht in onze lijst maar de bovenste plek is vrij zeldzaam.

Wie een beetje vooruit bladert, met het overzicht van zijn carrière, ziet dat dit staaltje ook vermoedelijk niet meer zal worden herhaald. Typische man van begin jaren '70.

Tipparade: week 45 van 1972.

1. Dizzy Man's Band - Shocking
Duidelijk beïnvloed door Blood, Sweat & Tears maar dat belet niet dat deze band leuke hits heeft gebracht. Dit nummer heeft veel vaart waarbij de blazers een hoofdrol spelen.
Cijfer: 7,5

9. Steve Rowland and Family Dogg - Sweet America
Banale en weinig inventieve countryrock met gospelzang, het is mij bovendien te langdradig.
Cijfer: 4

22. Anarchic System - Carmen Brasilia
Een vrijwel exacte (en dus overbodige) kopie van Popcorn met een bekende melodie. Waar dat Popcorn een evergreen is geworden is Carmen Brasilia begrijpelijk door iedereen vergeten.
Cijfer: 5

23. Ben Rondhuis / Danny Cardo - Jij Bent Veel Te Mooi
Een schlager zoals er 13000-in-een-dozijn bestaan, wie het ook zingt. De versie van Ben Rondhuis is volgens mij heropgenomen.

24. The Pearls - You Came, You Saw, You Conquered
Dit stelt vooral tekstueel ook niet zo veel voor maar het klinkt tenminste wel fris en het refrein blijft duidelijk hangen.

26. Lobo - I'd Love You To Want Me
Het nummer zei mij eerst niets maar bij het horen van de eerste noten ging er dadelijk een belletje rinkelen. Toch te standaard om een hoog cijfer te krijgen.

27. Long Tall Ernie and The Shakers - Kiss Me Baby
Simpele glamrock dat duidelijk lonkt naar de jaren '50 (Elvis Presley, Little Richard). Orgineel is het allerminst maar het rockt wel op plezierige wijze.

28. Julio Iglesias - Por Una Mujer
Julio Iglesias is nooit mijn ding geweest wegens te soft maar sfeervol is het wel met vlekkeloze productie.

30. Rick Nelson and The Stone Canyon Band - Garden Party
Rick Nelson was erg populair begin jaren '60 en nu keert hij terug met een countrynummer dat verwijst naar de muziek in die tijd en prima bij zijn warme zang past. Het heeft ook veel meer inhoud dan dat nummer van Steve Rowland and Family Dogg.

Wellicht geen hele spectaculaire binnenkomers, wel natuurlijk The Cover of the Rolling Stone van Dr. Hook, waar de titel van het nummer uiteindelijk leidde tot een tekening van (een deel van) de band op inderdaad een voorpagina van Rolling Stone, begin 1973.

Het was een tijd waarin dit ook kon voorkomen: in Engeland werd het nummer niet gedraaid omdat het reclame voor de Rolling Stone zou bevatten. Daar kwam verandering in toen de band Rolling Stone veranderde in "Radio Times", het tv en radioblad van de BBC. Toen mocht het wel.

Op nr. 30 Afrikaanse muziek in mijn lijst. Hij dateert al van februari 1972 maar was toen alleen met de oorspronkelijke A-kant "Hynme de la 8e Coupe D'Afrique Des Nations in Kameroen te koop en was bedoeld voor een internationaal Afrikaans voetbaltoernooitje.

De A-kant doet mij denken aan de muziek die Barend Barendse in 1972 (op dat moment 65 jaar) op Hilversum 3 draaide op de zaterdagmiddag zo rond de rubriek 'Eregalerij der Eeuwelingen' van mensen die gefeliciteerd werden met hun hoge leeftijd.
Merkwaardig als je Hilversum 3 van 1972 vergelijkt met 3FM nu.

Maar het gaat mij om de B-kant die vanaf oktober 1972 ook als A-kant verkrijgbaar was. Dubango heeft er weinig aan verdient in 1972 totdat hij begin jaren '90 een lucratieve rechtszaak van Michael Jackson won omdat het einde van "Wanna Be Starting Something" duidelijk geïnspireerd leek op deze Kameroense dansplaat. Er waren veel punten nodig om in de top 20 te geraken of te blijven.
29 als ondergrens is behoorlijk, vorige week had je daar nog mee op 17 gestaan. En voor All fall down (28 punten) viel daarmee deze week dus het doek.

Veel nieuwe binnenkomers en de snelheid waarmee Colin Blunstone komt valt erg op. En de vraag is natuurlijk ook of Late again van Stealers Wheel volgende week ook de geschepte verwachtingen waar kan maken. Voorlopig is er maar 1 doel, het achterhalen van Clair. Maar Gilbert o'Sullivan lijkt toch behoorlijk stevig op zijn troon te zitten.

1. Hildegard Knef, Enrico Macias, Sandra & Andres, Alice Babs, Demis Roussos, Vicky Leandros - Auntie
Kende ik niet en vind ik daar weinig aan. Te klef, te georkestreerd en ook jatterij van Mary Hopkin - Those Were The Days (week 36 van 1968).

2. The Cats - There Has Been A Time
Dan heb ik meer met The Cats. Niet dat ik een briljant nummer vind maar de sfeer, samenzang en vlekkeloze productie zijn steeds een pluspunt.

19. Revolution System - Carmen Brasilia
Vorige week de versie van Anarchic System waarvan ik het verschil nauwelijks kan horen. Hiervoor dezelfde cijfer.

234. Elvis - Burning Love
Nog een sterk nummer uit zijn latere carrière: de zang, het ritme en het (gospel)koor komen prime uit de verf.
Cijfer: 8

24. Arne Jansen - Zo Zijn De Meisjes
Een flauwe kopie van Meisje met Rode Haren (dat nog enigszins een guilty pleasure was) , clichématig en inspiratieloos.
Cijfer: 3

25. Alice Cooper - Elected
Nu actueler dan ooit waar de presidentsverkiezingen op de korrel werden genomen als zijnde een klucht. Alice Cooper for president!
Cijfer: 9

26. Proudfoot - Delta Queen
Dit nummer kende ik nog vaak, ik geloof in een andere versie. Ik hoor daar ook iets in van Pop-Tops - Mamy Blue (week 36 van 1971). Niet onaardig maar ook niet echt memorabel.

27. Peter Wiedemeijer - Ik Geloof
Ken ik eerder in de versie van Jimmy Frey en die vind ik beter mede door die orgel. Niettemin één van de betere Nederlandstalige nummers vanwege de tekst.

28. James Brown - Get On The Good Foot
Uitstekende funky ritme en blazers en natuurlijk de zang maar James Brown begint stilaan de automatische piloot te hanteren.

29. Wilma - Gebeurtenissen
Geen clip gevonden.

30. Strawbs - Lay Down
Deze band herinner ik mij alleen nog van Part of the Union maar blijkt heel wat albums te hebben uitgebracht. Dit vind ik zeker zo goed, aanstekelijk met soulvolle zang.

Status Quo heeft er even over gedaan, maar weet nu dan ook gelijk helemaal hoe de band helemaal moet gaan klinken tot ............ eh, 2016 aan toe zo'n beetje.
Waar een andere (nieuwe) band als Manfred Mann's earth band nog tot volle wasdom zal moeten groeien.
