De nieuwkomer die deze week het meest in het oog springt is die schitterende single van Aphrodite's Child met Break met ook nog eens heerlijk gitaarwerk tussen de bedrijven door, een prachtplaatje is het resultaat

Met Mijn Naam Is Haas van het Lowland Trio zal ik waarschijnlijk weinig medestanders gaan vinden, maar voor mij levert het weer een heerlijk nostalgisch moment op uit de tijd van Op Losse Groeven (de voorloper van Op Volle Toeren) met Chiel Montagne met zijn "legendarische" Tros Top 5

Het blijft overigens jammer dat er zo weinig bewaard is gebleven in de archieven uit de begintijd van Op Losse Groeven.
Mijn Naam Is Haas is overigens een slow starter voor het de Top 40 bereikt, want dan zitten we al in 1973 namelijk.

Met het papieren vliegtuigje van Status Quo maakt het eigenlijk niet uit in welk muziekdecennium je zit als het gaat om deze band, het muzikale recept blijft onverminderd hetzelfde "de typische rechttoe rechtaan rock" is hun handelsmerk en verveelt bij mij eigenlijk nooit, ook al weet je ruim van tevoren wat er allemaal gaat komen.

De stampende rock van Bonnie St. Claire & Unit Gloria is een leuk plaatje uit begin jaren 70 en nodigt uit om mee te doen en daar dacht Peter Koelewijn waarschijnlijk ook aan in 1981, want zijn Klap maar In Je handen, stamp met je voeten is daar de Nederlandse variant op.
Beide singles halen met gemak de Top 5 in Nederland.

Dit is dan de lijst waarin dé klassieker van Lou Reed binnenkomt. Dat behoeft weinig introductie. Voor het overige was het een niet al te schokkend weekje. Of het moest zijn dat Lindisfarn vorige week met 28 de lijst net niet haalde en nu met 22 wel. Dat verklaart de entree met 6 plekken verlies. Ik geloof niet dat we dat al eens eerder hebben meegemaakt.

15. Bolland & Bolland - Florida
Een niet onaardig maar wat zoutloos nummer, je zou je bij het horen van dit nummer niet in Florida wanen.
Cijfer: 5

21. Junior Campbell - Hallelujah Freedom
Hiervan herinner ik mij wel het refrein die inderdaad goed blijft hangen, voor de rest is dat nummer weinig opzienbarend.
Cijfer: 5,5

24. Elton John - Crocodile Rock
Eén van mijn favoriete Elton John-songs met een verwijzing naar de rock'n roll van de jaren '50 en meer bepaald Bill Haley. Maar het is vooral een erg plezierig, vlot en grappig nummer.
Cijfer: 9,5

25. Michael Jackson - Ben
Natuurlijk een zoete ballad maar o zó charmant en passievol dat ik niet anders dan een hoog cijfer kan geven.
Cijfer: 8

26. Solomon King - When You've Gotta Go
Een Engelstalige schlager (alsof een Duitse schlager in het Engels is vertaald) met een zang en tekst die ook niet veel soeps zijn.
Cijfer: 4

27. Leen Jongewaard, Piet Römer en Lex Goudsmit - Je Mottermee Leren Leven
Hier stelt de zang nog minder voor. Een eerste keer vind ik deze hoempapa nog enigszins leuk maar een tweede keer verveelt het snel.

28. The Detroit Spinners - I'll Be Around
Goede soul kan voor mij altijd al reken ik dit niet tot mijn favoriete soulplaten wegens ietsje te glad. Maar vocaal en productioneel zit het wel goed.

29. Bread - Sweet Surrender
Degelijke softpop, vakkundig gezongen en geproduceerd en sfeervol al weet het mij iets minder te boeien dan hun vorige hits.

30. Mike & Michael - Himalaya
Beide zangers waren voordien al actief. Dit nummer reken ik tot de categorie 'kan gaan' waarbij de arrangementen wel opvallen maar aan de andere kant is het vrij clichématig en ook wat niemendallerig.

Heb toch inmiddels sterk het gevoel dat het mij bijna boven het hoofd begint te groeien.... Er is zoveel goede nieuwe muziek. Dat moet zich dan weer mengen met recent uitgebrachte andere songs. Er is nauwelijks enige ruimte om tot volle wasdom te komen. Dat geldt nog slechts voor een handjevol hits.

In plaats van te kunnen schrijven "vandaag de klassieker van" is de klassieker juist regel geworden.
De Blue Ridge Rangers is niet anders dan een hobbyband (?) van John Fogerty, de man van Creedence Clearwater Revival. Die band heeft na een groot aantal prima albums en vele singles inmiddels het loodje gelegd. Hoewel ze op korte termijn en in 1973 nog wel van zich zullen laten horen.

Uiteraard zijn onze gedachten even bij Marzipaintree die door een ongeluk deze week natuurlijk niet zijn lijst kon aanleveren. Het spreekt voor zich dat zijn lijst van vorige week nog wel een keer kon meedoen.

We zien Colin Blunstone opeens bovenaan. Ik zag dat eigenlijk niet aankomen. Een spannende ontknoping, maar toch.
Wat ik wel had verwacht was een enorme "booming" David Bowie en een ontketende Lou Reed. Niets is echter minder waar. Beide heren doen het (nog) rustig aan en laten alle eer deze week aan de nieuwe single Break van Aphrodites child. Demis Roussos was al solo gegaan en eigenlijk stamt Break nog uit 1971. Maar het was toch nog een mooi succes.

We gaan alweer december in.....

Een nieuwe singer-songwriter aan het firmament met een tijdloos sterk nummer waarbij de arrangementen niet stroperig zijn maar passend in het geheel.

19. George Baker Selection - Marie-Jeanne
Zowat een Engelstalige smartlap maar het weet mij te charmeren, je kunt het net als hun vorige singles bestempelen als een guilty pleasure. Opmerkelijk ook hier de exotische (Griekse) arrangementen.

20. Bee Gees - Alive
Bee Gees waren artistiek en commercieel op de terugweg. Een slechte single is het zeker niet - het heeft beslist zijn kwaliteiten en sfeer - maar het lijkt mij teveel een (minder) aftreksel van hun vroegere werk.

29. Lowland Trio - Mijn Naam Is Haas
Ze lijken er vroeg bij met carnaval maar dit nummer kan ik wel aanhoren, dit is nog grappig en niet te melig. Later ook gecoverd door André Van Duin.

30. The Doors - The Mosquito
De kenmerkende mystieke sfeer is er niet meer na de dood van hun frontman Jim Morrison maar dit is nog één van de betere Morrison-loze nummers, al was het door de afwisseling en gitaar- en orgelsolo.

Deze week verscheen een prachtige nieuwe single van The Kinks. Echt om verliefd op te worden. Een jeugdliefde werd het evenwel niet, Celluloid heroes werd straal genegeerd in die tijd. Vraag mij niet waarom, het heeft potentie voldoende om oude Kinks tijden te doen herleven. Maar om de één of andere reden lagen The Kinks er een beetje uit.

De eerste keer dat ik Celluloid Heroes hoorde was toen Lola live werd uitgebracht, eind 1980. Daar was het toen het b-kantje van. En uiteindelijk draaide ik Celluloid Heroes even graag als Lola.

Wie ook oude tijden ongetwijfeld weer had willen doen herleven was Shocking Blue. De geschiedenis leert, dat de band formeel gesproken "op sterven na dood" is, ook al hadden ze (internationaal) nog veel succes met optredens. Maar een ouderwetse nummer 1 hit werd ze niet meer gegund met Eve and the Apple.
Misschien was het te druk met nieuwe ontdekkingen en bands. Maar formeel gesproken komt de single bij mij erg dicht bij de oude successen in de boeken.

Wat een weekje, als je goed kijkt en ziet hoeveel punten er zijn verschoven. Ik had niet gedacht dat Colin Blunstone zou overleven op 1, maar je ziet het. Maar nu dan toch de opmars van David Bowie en Lou Reed. Maar er zijn inmiddels nieuwe kapers op de kust.

Ben ook zeker blij met de terugkeer van Marzipaintree, niet alleen voor de lijst maar ook voor marzipaintree zelf.

1. Aphrodite's Child - Break
Erg progressief voor hun doen met mystieke sfeer, aparte gitaarsolo en vervormde zang maar het totaalplaatje klopt.
Cijfer: 8

6. Slade - Gudbuy T'Janez
Jeugdsentiment, dit en na zoveel jaren klinkt dit nog even plezierig: ruig en bizar maar bezield en levenslustig met steevast meezingbare tekst. Er zijn nauwelijks huidige rockbands te vinden waar ik dit kan zeggen.
Cijfer: 9

7. Shocking Blue - Eve And The Apple
Hun succes begon toen terug te lopen maar dit nummer doet nauwelijks onder voor hun vorige. Een meer dramatische toon en misschien wat minder catchy maar wederom klasse mede door de zang.

11. Vader Abraham + Goede Zonen - Vader Abraham
Geen clip gevonden (gelukkig!).

13. Hanny en De Rekels - Waarom Trouw Je Met Die Ander
Waarom moet je ons daarmee lastig vallen?

17. The Osmonds - Crazy Horses
Net als Slade jeugdsentiment voor mij maar dit nummer is gewoon geniaal in zijn gekte, die orgel alleen al (en die danspasjes, hilarisch!)!

18. Corry - Ik Vraag Niet Veel Aan Jou
Ik geef ook niet veel punten aan jou.

26. C.Jerome - Himalaya
Veel liever het Franstalige repertoire die tijd (neen, ik ben geen Waal!). Maar dit klinkt veel frisser, origineler (mede door die doedelzakken) en vlotter dan al die Nederlandstalige smartlappen bij elkaar en het heeft een erg aanstekelijk refrein.
Cijfer: 8

27. De Makkers - Wintertijd
Na de zomerzon is het tijd voor de wintertijd. Ligt in het verlengde daarvan en dus minder verrassend, het heeft meer een zomer- dan een wintersfeer.
Cijfer: 5,5

28. Petula Clark - Wedding Song
Lijkt meer een nummer van Joan Baez of Judy Collins door de folky inslag maar Petula Clark kan dit genre blijkbaar ook goed aan. Sfeervol en romantisch met expressieve zang, toch wel een veelzijdige vocaliste.
Cijfer: 8

29. Ronnie Tober - Petite Mademoiselle
Deze clichématige carnavalstamper kan ik meer waarderen dan die oubollige smartlappen maar dan enkel op een fout feestje, eventueel met enkele glazen op.

30. The O'Jays - 992 Arguments
Met 'classic' soul als dit mogen ze bij mij steeds afkomen. Alleen lijkt dat teveel op hun vorige hit Back Stabbers.

Kan het kritieke punt worden bereikt, dat het teveel van het goede gaat worden? Het aantal tips dat ik nog heb laten liggen was ook weer enorm: het is onvoorstelbaar hoeveel goede, tot heel goede muziek er in dit tijdperk wordt uitgebracht.

En dan ook nog eens een keer bands waar je niet omheen kan. Een aantal traditioneel goed scorende artiesten blijft met hun nieuwste songs puntloos achter, halen niet eens de Top 20.
