We hebben, in ieder geval getalsmatig, zowaar een echte haat/liefde single in ons midden, Het Dorp van Wim Zonneveld.
Twee users hebben het nummer op 1 staan, twee users helemaal niet in hun lijst en één halverwege: te weinig voor een echt hoge notering, althans, hoger dan 5.

In de Top 4 is alles heel dicht naar elkaar toegeschoven, mooi spannend. Het is in ieder geval wel duidelijk wat de toppers zijn en hoe groot de verschillen met alles daaronder.

En misschien heeft LucM de verklaring hoe het kan, dat juist De Wilde Boerendochtere van Ivan Heylen zo'n hit is geworden in Nederland. Wat had Heylen meer dan andere Vlaamse artiesten?

Tipparade-lijst van week 21, 1974 - top40.nl

1. Three Degrees - Year Of Decision
Fijne Philly-soul met aanstekelijke melodie, gloedvolle zang en smaakvolle, gepaste begeleiding zonder dat het te glad wordt.
Cijfer: 8

10. The Hollies - Son of a Rotten Gambler
Het vuur begint er uit te raken. Weliswaar goede karakteristieke zang en prima geproduceerd maar deze ballad weet niet genoeg te boeien of beroeren.
Cijfer: 6

13. Ringo Starr - Oh My My
Hoogstaand is dat niet - zeker de zang - maar het is wel een lekker vrolijk nummer waarbij de piano en blazers voor meerwaarde zorgen.

19. Saskia & Serge - Kon 't Hier Maar Altijd Zomer Zijn
Geen clip gevonden.

21. Ronnie Tober - Mamma Weet Wat Goed Is
Mama weet misschien wat goed is maar Ronnie Tober niet. Schlager als 13-in-een-dozijn zonder enige vorm van inventiviteit, enkel bedoeld om op goedkope wijze te scoren.

27. Ellis - El Doomo
Een Nederlandse band die geen kat nu nog kent, er is op MuMe geen enkele stem op een album van hen gegeven. Niet best met geforceerde zang, zwakke tekst en dito uitspraak al is de instrumentatie vrij apart maar ook tijdsgebonden.
Cijfer: 4,5

28. De Piraten - Heimwee Naar Marokko
Wat een melig, fantasieloos en oubollig gedoe met vreselijke zang, enkel goed voor wie heimwee heeft naar dit soort hoempapaschlagers.
Cijfer: 1

29. Tony Alberti & Friends - Candy Girl
Dit is dan weer zoutloos met zwakke tekst en vlakke zang. Country van het derde knoopsgat.

Ik gun heel veel artiesten en singles het allerbeste maar ik kan van heel veel nummers geen hit maken. Je probeert het, en dan is het net wat minder dan een voorganger en/of er doet zich een explosie voor aan nieuwe hits en bands en het is gebeurd.
Daarom ben ik het maar gedeeltelijk eens met kritiek over 1974: er verscheen juist heel veel goede nieuwe muziek.

Waarbij deze week bands/artiesten met nieuw werk gloreren als 10cc, Elton John en Cockney Rebel.
En er alleraardigste polderpop verscheen van bijvoorbeeld Us en Catapult.
Americana van Charlie Daniels, een klassieker van John Denver, The Eagles en natuurlijk The Doobie Brothers.

De laatste twee kampten met het verschijnsel dat er verschillende singles in verschillende landen op hetzelfde tijdstip verschenen. Want waar de Amerikanen kozen voor Already gone als eerste single van On the Border, kozen de Engelsen voor James Dean (verschijningsdatum 10 mei).
The Doobie Brothers hadden in VS en Europa als opvolger van Another Park, another Sunday het nummer Eyes of Silver. De Engelsen kozen voor Pursuit on 53rd Street.

Zou daar een bepaald beleid achter hebben gezeten? Of zouden ze alvast hebben willen kijken hoe de afzonderlijke nummers aansloegen in de diverse landen?
Hoe dan ook, ik ga mee met de keuze van Martial om als eerste te kiezen voor de engelse release.

Dan loop je ook wel eens per ongeluk ergens tegen aan. Voor het 1987 topic vond ik alvast voor 1988 het nummer Astronomy van Blue Oyster Cult. Dat bleek een prachtige heruitgave maar wat belangrijker was, was de aanvulling in tijd die er bij de informatie werd gegeven: oorspronkelijk uitgegeven in april 1974.
En wat er dan wordt geboden, kun je uiteraard niet laten liggen.

Ellis is zeker geen Nederlandse band. Naamgever Steve Ellis komt uit Engeland en had in de sixties al hits met The Love Affair, zoals "Everlasting Love" en "A Day Without Love". Deze track is inderdaad door Roger Daltrey geproduceerd.

De bewegingen zitten in het tweede deel van de lijst. Het eerste deel is vrijwel gelijk gebleven, behoudens de geslaagde couppoging door Steely Dan.
Wet Willie een vreemde eend in de bijt in vergelijk met de sterstatus hits van 10cc, George McCrae en Elton John.

10cc, George McCrae en Elton John zijn in NL zeker bekender. Maar deze van Elton John haalt slechts de 24e plek in de Top 40 en is er binnen 4 weken weer uit. In de VS is het anders daar haalt 10cc de Top 100 niet eens en zijn de andere 3 top 10 hits. Maar er is wel een grote baas boven baas: die George McCrae haalt werkelijk overal de nummer 1 plek. De single schijnt meer dan 11 miljoen keer verkocht te zijn. Bijzonder? er zijn minder dan 40 singles die de 10 miljoen gehaald hebben.

Toch moet Wet Willie in Nederland behoorlijke airplay gehad hebben want het is een nummer dat ik echt uit 1974 ken.

Dat is heel goed mogelijk uiteraard maar niet voor prestaties in de Top 40.

De overige nummers, was het enige onderscheid dat ik wilde maken, kenmerken zich juist door een (internationaal) langdurig verblijf in de hitlijsten.
Het succes van George McRae is inderdaad opmerkelijk. Harry Wayne Casey (KC), de schrijver, zal spijt als haren op zijn hoofd hebben dat hij het nummer niet zelf heeft uitgebracht met zijn Sunshine Band.

Tipparade-lijst van week 22, 1974 - top40.nl

1. The Rubettes - Sugar Baby Love
Wellicht fout maar het blijft een onweerstaanbaar nummer, vooral die intro, dat hoge stemmetje en doowop-achtergrondzang.
Cijfer: 8,5

17. Uriah Heep - Something Or Nothing
Deze band zat destijds in de schaduw van Deep Purple en Led Zeppelin. Nu waren dat destijds klassebands maar Uriah Heep klonk hier ook opwindend met virtuoos gitaarwerk en prima stemmenwerk en het heeft ook een lekkere duistere sfeer.
Cijfer: 8

18. The Stylistics - You make me Feel Brand New
Softsoul dat sommigen begrijpelijk té soft vinden maar niemand kan beweren dat de zang en instrumentatie niet mooi zijn.
Cijfer: 7

22. The Buffoons - To Know You Is to Love You
Een vaak gecoverd nummer, ik geloof dat dit het origineel is. De versie van The Buffoons klinkt kleffer door de overproductie.
Cijfer: 5

Larry Cotton - I Love You
Een hijgnummer met een erg originele titel, klinkt nu meer theatraal dan romantisch. Blijkbaar geïnspireerd door Je t'Aime Moi Non Plus maar kan er niet aan tippen.
Cijfer: 4,5

28. Ciska Peters - Espana Mañana
Natuurlijk zit de zonnige sfeer erin maar het is mij te voorspelbaar en clichématig. Dan veel liever Eviva Espana van Samantha.
Cijfer: 4,5

29. Love Unlimited Orchestra - Rhapsody In White
Kan best dienst doen als herkenningstune. Neigt naar muzak maar in zijn geheel toch sfeer- en smaakvol.
Cijfer: 6,5

30. Ecstasy, Passion And Pain - I Wouldn't Give You Up
Klink soulvol en past in de tijdgeest maar is net niet memorabel of origineel genoeg om een evergreen te worden.
Cijfer: 6

LucM
Het origineel is van Phil Spector en hij heeft het in 1958 al opgenomen met het bandje waar hij in zat The Teddy Bears. Velen hebben het daarna opgnomen en niet de minste zoals The Beatles (onder de titel To Know Her Is to Love Her), een controversie van het trio Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt en Emmylou Harris maar later ook een soulversie van Amy Winehouse.

Nieuwe muziek van bekende artiesten. Alleen voor Minnie Riperton moet ik even een uitzondering maken. Vooral bekend van Lovin' you (later in dit jaar) maar haar huidige single Reasons was een alleraardigste ontdekking.

De stroom aan hits voor Hot Chocolate en Leo Sayer nog lang niet zeker. Emma was een groot succes, opvolger Changing World nauwelijks opgemerkt. Leo Sayer is ook nog naarstig op zoek naar zijn grote doorbraak. Maar ik wed dat die ongetwijfeld gaat komen, vermoedelijk zelfs al in 1974!
