Als ik al niet overtuigd was van de grootsheid van de kortstondige carriere van Jim Croce, dan was ik het nu wel geworden. Wederom een erg fijne track van zijn I Got a Name-album uit 1973.

War kende ik voornamelijk van hun hit Low Rider, maar deze live versie van Ballero bevalt me ook uitstekend. Moest wel meteen aan Carlos Santana denken.

De gelijkenis is opvallend. Ze klinken wellicht in 1974 meer als Santana dan Santana. Hoewel wat aan de trage kant. Maar de grootmeester staat op punt van terug slaan

Het debuut van Jigsaw en Pilot (nog niet echt op dreef) en wellicht een opmerkelijke entree voor Neil Sedaka met gepolijste Americana waar het glazuur van je tanden vanaf springt. Maar de tune is goed.

Love of life lijkt een gewone volgende single uit het Earth & Fire songbook maar dat is het niet. Met dit nummer wordt voor mij afscheid genomen van de roemruchte power symfo periode van Earth & Fire, sinds 1969 met grote regelmaat in mijn lijst. Met veel succes en punten.

Maar na Love of life wordt het voor mij nooit meer wat het geweest was, ook al zou de band nog een jaar of 10 hits en hitjes scoren.
Voor de laatste single voor Focus, die deze week verdwijnt, geldt eigenlijk hetzelfde. Alleen verdwijnt de band rond Van Leer en Akkerman voor jaren volledig van het toneel, nooit meer een hit, voor Akkerman om ook nooit meer terug te komen. Het is voorbij.
Ook voor Mouth & Macneal, Ah L'amore gewogen en te licht bevonden, valt na deze week definitief het doek.

Daarom, "drink nog een glas op alles wat ooit was. Die goeie ouwe tijd".

De nummers van Stealers Wheel zijn tijdloos mede door de prima productie en stemmenwerk. Wat steviger dan hun vorige hits met een verrassend tussenstuk met saxofoon.

25. Sweet Dreams - Honey Honey
Een verdienstelijke Abba-cover door de zang maar beter dan het origineel? Dit is teveel een letterlijke kopie zonder veel van zichzelf toe te voegen.

26. Us - Music In The Air
Eén hit en dan van het toneel verdwenen. Een overbekende melodie in gospelvorm, vond het destijds beter dan nu.

28. Imca Marina - Am Abend Kommen Die Traume
Dan zijn wij weer aanbeland bij de zoveelste belegen en vergankelijke schlager. Klinkt nu ook erg melig.

Country kan ik veel beter hebben al zit dit soort in de categorie dat ik enkel 's avonds laat zou draaien. Maar de zang is dik in orde en het heeft een gezellige landelijke romantische sfeer.

Zou perfect bij een gangsterfilm passen, wat dat geen soundtrack of herkenningstune van een misdaadserie? Met de passende beelden erbij zou dit nummer natuurlijk beter tot zijn recht komen.

Een spectaculaire binnenkomst voor Earth & Fire! Vanuit het niets binnen op 2. En aangezien de nummer 1, Steely Dan, deze week 10 punten heeft verloren en duidelijk in de weg omlaag, lijkt het mij dat het wel raar zal moeten lopen, wil Earth & Fire volgende week niet de eerste plaats bezetten.

Vorige week stond de Golden Earring nog op 2. Maar die hebben een dusdanig aantal punten verloren dat er een vrij spectaculaire val naar beneden is gedaan.

Ook het Electric Light Orchestra kwam al snel in hun carriere met een (alleraardigst) live album en trok daarvan Daytripper, dat in Nederland als single werd uitgebracht.
You put something better inside me van Stealers Wheel werd uitgebracht in Engeland, wat aan de late kant (van het eerste album) maar toen was het nog niet zou heel erg oud natuurlijk en blijkbaar kwam Stealers Wheel wat meer in de belangstelling.

Het instrumentale werk van MFSB maakte deze week de meeste indruk!

Sluit aan bij hun vorige hits met die zweverige sound, de mellotron en de wat ijle zang van Jerney Kaagman. Wederom een sterke single.

9. Gerard Cox - Die Goeie Ouwe Tijd
Hoewel Gerard Cox voornamelijk covers brengt (van wie is het origineel?) weet hij daar een eigen draai aan te geven en geloofwaardig te brengen.

12. Osmonds - Hold Her Tight
Uit hun beginperiode toen ze nog ruig en opwindend klonken met effectieve gitaar en blazers. Jammer dat ze later hun gitaren aan de wilgen hingen en een zoetzappige boysband werden.
Cijfer: 7,5

15. Vader Abraham - Die Ene Herinnering
Een melige en voorspelbare ballad over het verdwijnen van Veronica. Blijkbaar heeft Vader Abraham veel succes aan Veronica te danken.
Cijfer: 4

19. Lynsey De Paul - Ooh I Do
Doet mij sterk denken aan Be My Baby van The Ronettes met name het ritme en de intro. Niet onaardig maar teveel jatterij.
Cijfer: 5,5

21. Tony Sherman - Tonight
Deze man heeft duidelijk veel naar Stevie Wonder geluisterd (die stem en mondharmonica). Het nummer mag er wel nog zijn.
Cijfer: 6

22. Mouth & MacNeal - Ah! L'Amore
Wat meer rockgetint met een latin-refrein die mij wat te melig is. Ik hou het liever bij hun eerste hits.
Cijfer: 5

26. Maddog - It's Gonna Be Better
Een Cats-kloon maar een stuk meliger en meer belegen al klinkt het wel zonnig. Maar uiteindelijk overheerst de meligheid.
Cijfer: 4

27. Arrows - Touch Too Much
Een vergeten glamrockband met een compositie van Chinn & Chapman. Deze klinkt te stereotiep en mist - in tegenstelling tot The Sweet, Mud en Suzi Quatro - eigenheid en opwinding.
Cijfer: 4,5

28. Bay City Rollers - Shang-a-Lang
Glamrock light van een boysband met gillende meiden-aanhang zoals je hoort, duidelijk geënt op eerdere glamrockhits, origineel is anders.
Cijfer: 4,5

29. America - Mad Dog
Deze softrock heeft op alle gebied meer inhoud, het klinkt frivool en zou een McCartney-song kunnen zijn. Opzienbarend is wat anders maar dit krijgt meer dan voldoende.
Cijfer: 7

30. Bryan Ferry - The 'In' Crowd
Leunt nog sterk aan bij Roxy Music al is het van iets minder niveau. De duistere, mystieke sfeer is wat mij betreft de sterkste kant.

Joe Dassin is van de originele versie die van Gerard Cox klinkt wat vlotter en leuker

De nummer 1 van Earth & Fire was helemaal voorspel vorige week. Bijzonder is het doorstijgen van Catapult naar de 2e plek.
Dat lijkt mij een mooi succes voor de polderpop liefhebbers!

Wildflower nieuw op 19 en op 20 is eveneens bijzonder. En dan ook allebei met 18 punten en de hoogste plek dus nummer 3.
Maar zelfs bij Wildflower blijft dan uiteindelijk het alfabet overeind. Skylark gaat dan voor The New Birth, het is niet anders

Ach, als we BZN destijds eens een beetje hadden gesteund in hun muziek, als band, hadden ze misschien nooit gegrepen naar de mogelijkheid over te stappen van een geinige rockband naar het genre waar ze later beroemd in Nederland mee zijn geworden. Maar ja, het zijn Volendammers en de pijp moest natuurlijk blijven roken. Maar ik vind Love me like a Lion nog steeds alleraardigst.

En het moment suprême is daar voor Albert Hammond. Zijn grootste hit in Nederland ooit en daarna ging alles snel bergafwaarts qua hits. Hoewel toch een prima componist. Vermoedelijk was hij teveel een vertegenwoordiger van een bepaalde tijdsgeest, ook al heeft hij later nog een paar pogingen ondernomen de hitlijsten weer eens te bestieren.

Zijn zoon en naamgenoot moest nog worden geboren (1980) maar is inmiddels een beroemd artiest in het Indie genre. Het hart zit in ieder geval op de juiste plek.

Tipparade-lijst van week 25, 1974 - top40.nl

1. Hues Corporation - Rock the Boat
Vlotte soul/funk met sterke intro en ritme waarbij de blazers een grote rol spelen, genoeg gladgestreken om een hit te worden (maar niet zo gelikt als de latere R&B).
Cijfer: 7,5

6. Wings - Band On The Run
Wellicht de sterkste single van Paul McCartney na de Beatlesperiode (uit ook al zijn sterkste post Beatles-album), erg inventief en afwisselend met vlotte tempowisselingen.
Cijfer: 9,5

12. Ƭ℮rry Jacks - If Ɣou Ɠo Away
Weer een Jacques Brel-cover van Ƭ℮rry Jacks. Het is zeker niet slecht gedaan en hij brengt het op eigen wijze maar aan de passie en intensiteit van Jacques Brel kan hij niet tippen.
Cijfer: 6

19. Heart - Lovemaker
Dit is niet die Canadese band maar er bleek al voordien al een Nederlandse band met die naam te zijn. Glamrock dat teveel een kloon van Suzy Quatro is en te weinig originaliteit om te overtuigen.
Cijfer: 5

21. The Shoes - Up And Down
Hier zorgt de diepe en soulvolle van Theo Van Es wel voor herkenbaarheid. Het nummer is net als hun vele hits behoorlijk maar net niet pakkend genoeg.
Cijfer: 6,5

26. Wally Tax - Evidently
Wederom pop uit Nederland, lijkt teveel op zijn vorige hits (vooral het ritme en de intro) om zich te onderscheiden.
Cijfer: 5,5

27. Elton John - Dont let the sun go down on me
Nu bekender in de versie met George Micheal maar het origineel is niet minder. Vooral zijn pianospel hier is geweldig.
Cijfer: 8,5

28. Nick Mackenzie - In Old Mexico
De singles van deze man zijn ook niet van elkaar te onderscheiden. De slechte Engelse uitspraak doet nog meer afbreuk.
Cijfer: 4

29. Freddy Breck - Die Sonne geht auf
Toen nog leuk gevonden vooral vanwege de zang, nu overheerst de meligheid net als de meeste schlagers.
Cijfer: 4,5

30. Paper Lace - The Night Chicago Died
Productioneel vrij tijdsgebonden maar de sublieme tekst maakt het een onvergetelijk nummer met bovendien erg aanstekelijk ritme.
Cijfer: 8
