Slechts twee hits scoorde deze band hier maar ze zijn beiden prima. Door toetsen gedragen meerstemmige zangharmonie.

12. Karen Young - Hot Shot
Een ééndagsvlieg maar dit nummer mag ik nog steeds. Vlotte, aangename disco met exotisch tintje en soulvolle stem.

15. John Travolta - Greased Lightnin'
Weer een single uit Grease, het moet de vijfde zijn. Leunt sterk aan bij de rock'n roll uit de jaren '50. Gezellig zonder meer.

19. Franklin Kennedy - Na 66 Jaren (Mit 66 Jahren)
Lang niet meer gehoord, geen onaardig Nederlandstalig nummer waarbij de viool en piano het nummer opfleurt.

23. Exile - Kiss You All Over
Een product van Chinn & Chapman. Niet hun beste song maar wel met de nodige kwaliteiten met belangrijke inbreng van piano en synthesizer.

24. Gidea Park - Beach Boy Gold
Een medley van Beach Boys-songs. Leuk gedaan maar ik luister toch liever naar het origineel.

25. KC and The Sunshine Band - Do You Feel All Right
Een minder bekend nummer van KC and The Sunshine Band. De klad begint er in te komen, het klint teveel als een echo van vroeger werk.

26. Neil Young - Comes A Time
Aangenaam, relaxte countrysong met een gastrol voor Linda Ronstadt en heel fijne viool.

27. Teach In - Dear John
Teach In wil duidelijk een graantje meepikken van het succes van John Travolta. Lijkt beter mee te vallen dan ik herinner.

28. Julien Clerc - Jaloux De Tout
Julien Clerc moet zowat de populairste Franse zanger in de jaren '70 zijn. Heel mooie en aparte stem, het liedje spreekt mij net iets minder aan.

Met zijn accent heb ik het moeilijk, verder geen onaardige song vooral door de boeiende tekst.

Een lijst vol met bekende nieuwe binnenkomers, behalve dan één. En laat dat dan net de hoogste zijn. Ik moet toegeven, dat ik ook niet wist dat deze track van The War of the Worlds is gehaald. Feitelijk is het net als Forever autumn door Justin Hayward maar nu Brave new World, gezongen door David Essex. Achter de knoppen zit natuurlijk Jeff Wayne.

Maar The War of the Worlds is nu eenmaal een geweldig album en kan heel wat hebben. Volgens mij is dit zelfs nog niet eens de laatste single van dit album. Maar Brave new World maakt er een belangrijk onderdeel van uit.

Minder bekend is ook de nieuwe single van Heart. Hoewel uiterst succesvol in de periode 1975-1977 zie je dat de belangstelling tanende is en de resultaten achter blijven. Geheel ten onrechte! Maar ik kan ook hier alleen maar adviseren het nummer toch nog maar eens goed te beluisteren. Overigens was het vorige nummer Magazine nog van het gelijknamige album. Straight on komt inmiddels van het album Dog and Butterfly.

Verder echt klassiekers van Styx, Sniff 'n the tears, Alice Cooper en Peter Tosh met Mick Jagger. Ga daar nog maar eens tegen concurreren. E.L.O. probeert met nog maar weer eens een track van Out of the Blue. The Jam en Van Halen moeten de jeugd bij de les te houden.. Mooie tijden.

1978 is toch wel een jaar waarin de variatie aan stijlen alle kanten al opschiet.
Bij herman zag ik Georgio al een paar weken, maar ik vergat hem steeds, deze week niet.
En bij 50tracks het punkska pareltje Skank Bloc Bologna, absoluut wel van dezelfde Scritti Politti als het Cupid & Psyche album jaren later met de megahit Absolute. Bologna klinkt erg heavy en allerlei kluswerkzaamheden en getik lijken er af en toe doorheen te lopen (tenminste in de feature video hier). Daar boogie-en Michael en co niet tegenop zulke competitie.

Musique is een project van Patrick Adams, een van de grote discopioniers met een enorme waslijst aan producties en bands waar hij deel van uitmaakte. Blijkbaar zingt ook Jocelyn Brown hier mee, later zou zijn nog hits scoren in allerlei andere hoedanigheden. Dit nummer viel me op omdat een van de laatste singles van Tame Impala me er erg aan doet denken (Is It True), al zie ik nergens officiële credits.

Rick James' Mary Jane is echt een heerlijke funky slow jam, ben heel blij met deze ontdekking. Jammer dat deze man in Nederland alleen maar bekend is van Super Freak.

Correctie herman: Give It to Me Baby en zeker Glow zijn toch op zeker wel bekend in NL.
In ieder geval dan toch bij mij Maar Mary Jane is een heerlijke laid back tune.

Dat nummer van Musique is ook erg fijn. Komt bij mij telkens als laatste niet door richting de top 20. Volgende week moet het er toch maar eens van komen.

Volgens mij kennen jullie Looseys rap ook wel, toch vrij bekend, al was het maar door de video

Aardig, soepel swingend nummer vooral vanwege de blazers maar na een tijd slaat de verveling toe.
Cijfer: 5,5

6. Golden Earring - Movin' Down Life
Werd niet zo'n grote hit. Een pakkende melodie en veel vaart maar het nummer lijkt mij iets te overgeproduceerd. Toch een prima single.

14. Bolland & Bolland - Hold On
Werd geen hit en is minder memorabel dat hun meeste ander werk. Wel eigentijds en funky met fraaie stemmenwerk.

26. Vader Abraham - Als Je Weggaat
In de jaren '70 niet uit de hitlijsten weg te branden, scoorde zelfs meer hits dan Abba. Voor zijn doen niet slecht maar vrij melig.

27. Veronica Unlimited - Gimme More
Dit doet mij niets, te niemendallerig en het swingt ook niet echt. Kon alleen die tijd een hit worden (en dat werd het zelfs niet).

28. Andy Gibb - An Everlasting Love
Probeert mij te krampachtig in de voetsporen van zijn broers te treden. Slecht is het niet maar merkelijk minder memorabel dan de Bee Gees-hits.

29. Albert West - Broken White Line
Albert West gaat op de countrytoer. De zang kan mij niet overtuigen en het klinkt nu ook gedateerd door de overproductie.
Cijfer: 4

30. Jeff Wayne featuring Justin Hayward - Forever Autumn
Sfeervol en wat dromerig en best smaakvol met mooie stem van Moody Blues-zanger. Goede, net niet te overdadige productie.
Cijfer: 8

De stevigheid in het topic lijkt wat ingeruild voor punk/new wave en disco/dance tracks.
Dat mag uiteraard, wie ben ik.
Toch jammer voor de laatste singles van de Golden Earring en de Rolling Stones.

You and I vond/vind ik niet zoveel aan en dan noem ik het nummer ook niet . Loosey's Rap is uiteraard bekend, maar deed het nog minder in NL dan Glow.

Die van de Earring doet me heel weinig, die van de Stones zeker wel, alleen hebben die bij mij de pech dat er maar 20 tracks in de weeklijst passen. Beast of Burden schuurt er echter wel tegenaan. Lastig zoveel goede tracks in een mooi muziekjaar.

Ik ben benieuwd! Alleen Justus18 hoeft nog zijn lijst te plaatsen.

Qua stevigheid verliest mijn lijst na 5 weken stationair op P35 te hebben gestaan Status Quo. Daarvoor in de plaats komen Van Halen, The Rolling Stones (When the Whip Comes Down) en Black Sabbath. B-kant Symptom Of the Universe is een track van het album Sabotage uit 1975, maar pas in 1978 op single verschenen.

Edit: When the Whip Comes Down was natuurlijk ook al de B-kant van Beast Of Burden. Respectable is minder. Ik laat het zo staan, maar ik vrees dat The Stones niet ver zullen komen.

93 singles deze week in alle lijsten, dat zijn er net zo veel als vorige week. Het lijkt wel of we hier een status quo bereikt hebben! Grote winsten voor Toto en de Undertones. Ben benieuwd. Ook de Buzzcocks winnen nog steeds punten. Dat wordt volgende week dan spannend.

Aan de andere kanten verdwenen maar liefst 27 punten bij Boston en verdween Don't look back uit de lijst.
Voor onder andere Le freak van Chic. In het genre één van de allergrootste hits ooit. Er is nog een band gelinkt aan Chic: Sister Sledge. Die hits gaan ook nog allemaal deze kant op komen. De Discoliefhebbers kunnen hun lol op!

Maar we moeten ook toegeven: dit zijn bij uitstek de hoogtijdagen van het genre. Sylvester heeft zich inmiddels ook al gemeld in onze lijst. Ongetwijfeld evolueert het ook weer in een nieuwe muzieksoort. Nog een jaartje, dan is er Rapper's delight.

You and I wel een paar keer geluisterd, maar kwam hier helaas niet echt binnen.

Looseys Rap zegt me zo gauw niets, maar wie weet als ik hem hoor...

Give It To Me Baby vind ik fantastisch, maar in Nederland heeft dat dus helemaal niets gedaan in de top 40. Maar het spreekt voor Poeha dat hij die wel kent.

Vind dat nummer van de Earring nou niet echt stevig eigenlijk. Vond er niks aan eerlijk gezegd.
Voor mij was het nieuw, maar het heeft mijn tiplijst niet gehaald.

Respectable van de Stones staat daar al wel een paar weken in. Die zou de top 20 nog kunnen halen.

Na de opmerking van pureshores over You and I, ook even in de NL Top40 gedoken en toen zag ik tot mijn verbazing, inderdaad herman, dat het nummer hier helemaal niets heeft gedaan

Wat goes up must come down wordt er al gezongen door The Alan Parsons Project en inderdaad. Het verbaast mij dat de successen van de singles van die eerste zo bejubelde APP albums zo tegenvallen. Het is niet anders en het is natuurlijk buitengewoon druk. Maar het blijft toch bijzonder.

Voor de disco liefhebbers openbaart zich hier één van de grootste klassiekers in het genre ooit. I will survive van Gloria Gaynor. Niets mis mee, het is nog steeds een nummer dat veel voorbij komt. Een ander nieuw nummer uit de discotheken komt er een beetje door in de schaduw te staan, Lost in your love van John Paul Young. Veel succes in 1977 en 1978 deze man. Daarna was het voor de Australiër op.

Kwaliteitsrock/pop is er van Dire Straits, de Moody Blues en maar weer eens een cover van Santana. Never change a winning team maar het zou zeker niet zo'n succes worden als She's not there.

Johnny Lydon is inmiddels alweer even weg bij de Sex Pistols. Hoe lang heeft het alles bij elkaar geduurd. Maar hij mag het nu solo proberen in P.I.L.

Tipparade-lijst van week 41, 1978 - top40.nl

1. Supermax - Love Machine
Elektronisch nummer dat een wat dreigende sfeer heeft en naar een climax lijkt te groeien. De monotone zang past daar wonderwel in.
Cijfer: 7,5

10. The Rolling Stones - Respectable
Ruige rock'n roll-nummer die zelfs naar punk neigt. Het is vooral de gitaarriff en basgitaar dat mij een hoog cijfer doet gevan.
Cijfer: 8

14. Styx - Sing For The Day
Dit nummer is dan weer symfonisch getint met vrij aparte en inventieve synthesizer, wellicht één van hun beste songs.
Cijfer: 8,5

25. Rob De Nijs - De Pieper
Altijd wel een boontje gehad voor Rob De Nijs door zijn warme stem en innemende performance en dit is wederom een aangename, vlotte luistersong.
Cijfer: 8

26. Aparecida - 17 Anos
Kende ik niet, dit soort exotische muziek kan voor mij altijd maar dit nummer is mij wat eentonig.
Cijfer: 5,5

27. Massada - Dansa (Don't Quit Dancing)
Latin die mij aan Santana doet denken door de gitaar. Wat lichtvoetiger dan hun inspirator maar wel gezellig.
Cijfer: 7

28. Smokie - Mexican Girl
Lichtvoetige pop met een refrein die blijft hangen maar toch wat minder dan hun vorige hits. De (samen)zang staat wel steeds garant voor kwaliteit.
Cijfer: 6,5

29. Nick Gilder - Hot Child In The City
Het enige nummer dat ik van hem ken, neigt nog sterk naar glamrock. Enigszins tijdsgebonden maar geen slecht nummer.
Cijfer: 6,5

30. Donna Summer - Mac Arthur Park
Oorspronkelijk van Richard Harris maar de versie van Donna Summer ligt mij meer door haar stem en de opbouw.
Cijfer: 8

Grappig, voor mij was die single van Styx juist het dieptepunt deze week (cijfer 3).

En dat terwijl ik recente singles Crystal Ball en Blue Collar Man juist wel prima vond (cijfer rond de 7).
