En daar is wederom een sterke track van het geweldige Uriah Heep album Fallen Angel (zwaar verguisd door de "echte" kenners). Het album staat vol met toffe tracks. Daarentegen heb ik dan weer weinig met de voorgaande albums, dus zal wel aan het instapmoment liggen.
Mooi om te zien dat ik er niet volledig alleen in sta, want 50tracks heeft het nummer ook binnen laten komen, op een hoopvolle plek.

90 singles deze week in alle lijsten, drie minder dan vorige week.

Ik wilde nog schrijven, nadat ik voor dit overzicht eerst Chase van Giorgio Moroder voorbij hoorde komen en daarna Giving up giving in van de Three Degrees, dat de laatste haast ook wel uit de stal van Moroder leek te komen.

Ik dacht, ik kijk het voor de zekerheid even na wie er hier zit na te apen dan wel gedacht moet hebben dat hij dat ook wel kon.
En ja hoor, ook Giving up giving in is geschreven door Moroder (en Belotte), hetzelfde duo dat ook bijvoorbeeld verantwoordelijk was voor I feel love van Donna Summer. Alleen was alles toen helemaal nieuw.

Dus Giorgio Moroder was de man van de tijd, de man van de moderne vindingen en een voortstuwer van de trend van de tijd, disco muziek. 82 Inmiddels en in 1978 al langer bezig met synthesizers. Als het goed is kennen we in de topic allemaal Son of my father van Chickory Tip uit 1972. Toen was de keuze van de synthesizer ook al bijzonder. Al koppelde Moroder het toen aan bubblegum pop in plaats van disco.

Maar hij is duidelijk aanwezig.

Spannend is het ook aan de top, dat zagen we al een beetje aankomen. Toto daalt dan maar had toch een +8. De Teenage Kicks lijken te hebben gewonnen maar blijven nog net achter de Buzzcocks. Dat maakt de top 3 voor volgende week al bijna bekend. Ik denk niet dat Neil Young zich daar nog tussen weet te wormen.

Misschien nog Driver's seat van Sniff 'n the tears. Dat is natuurlijk ook nog een hele klassieker. Of toch ook Chic. Kortom, ieders medewerking voor volgende week wordt opnieuw (dringend) gevraagd!

Valt me nu pas op dat de d is weggevallen bij het hoesje van The Buzzcocks.

Neil Young maakt bij mij trouwens nog wel kans binnen te komen, staat inmiddels vlak achter de top 20. Toto gaat dat niet redden en Sniff 'n' The Tears vermoedelijk ook niet, al is dat wel flink jeugdsentiment (uit 1991 dan wel).

Geinig weetje van Moroder en Thee Degrees ook.

En de Robert Palmer fans konden hun geluk natuurlijk niet op: weer een prachtige nieuwe single van Double Fun. Palmer is bij succes nooit te beroerd geweest zijn fans rijkelijk te voorzien van vinyl. Wel moest de single van ver komen, het moest worden geïmporteerd vanuit de VS.

Hij was dan de coming man in 1978, de eerste generatie Queen fans zal met gemengde gevoelens Bicycle race hebben aangehoord. Ook Queen wilde niet te beroerd zijn vinyl richting haar fans te sturen maar de vraag mag terecht worden gesteld of de muziek ook wel sterker werd dan wat in het (nabije) verleden werd geboden. Bicylce race gecombineerd met Fat Bottomed Girls, dat waren geen Queen titels, het ging zelfs naar het platvloerse, en de songs hebben feitelijk toch weinig nog uit te staan met Bohemian Rhapsody of Somebody to love. Enfin, als 15-jarige ging je toch braaf naar de platenwinkel.

David Bowie heeft een aardige, in Nederland nauwelijks opgevallen single van zijn live-album Stage afgehaald. Japan blijkt nog verre van het niveau Quiet Life, maar is een work in progress. 10cc heeft betere tijden gekend en ik heb ook beter werk gehoord van Bob Dylan en Elvis Costello. Dan toch maar de nieuwe single van Bruce, hoewel we ook van die single in Nederland nog nooit hadden gehoord: we moesten er voor naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

Ha, ha, kwam net Frankie Miller - Darlin' tegen in de UK hitlist van week 41 op zoek naar nominaties. En moest toch wel heel even denken waar ik die van kende. Maar dat is dus het origineel en het kwam me (uiteindelijk) bekend voor van Willem Duyn - Willem (1981).

1. Foxy - Get Off
Hun enige hit maar wel één die kan tellen. Feestelijke dansmuziek zoals ik graag mag horen, dit swingt de pan uit. Prima baslijn ook.

15. John Paul Young - Lost In Your Love
Ligt wat in de lijn van zijn vorige singles. Prima zang met passende synthesizer maar iets minder pakkend dan zijn vorige hits.
Cijfer: 7

21. Patricia Paay - Malibu
Ach, die tijd konden ze meestal wel zingen wat met vele latere sterren (na het jaar 2000) teveel gevraagd is. Het (disco)nummer is te weinig origineel en overtuigt niet echt.

24. Robert Palmer - Every Kinda People
Robert Palmer is een veelzijdige artiest met een smaakvol nummer dat het midden houdt tussen funk en reggae met soulvolle stem.
Cijfer: 8,5

25. Marshall, Hain - Coming Home
Hun tweede single, bleef in de tipparade steken. En begrijpelijk, een ballad die nauwelijks kan boeien.

26. Jean Guidoni - Nana
Kende ik niet, ook dit nummer boeit mij weinig ofschoon ik het Franse chanson doorgaans wel kan waarderen.

27. Bob Seger - Hollywood Nights
Een artiest die hier te weinig erkenning krijgt. Nochtans, prima bluesy stem met een rocknummer met veel vaart.

28. Francis Goya - Manolita
Doet mij sterk denken aan Argentina van Conquistador dat eerder dat jaar een hit werd. Aangenaam instrumentaal nummer zonder meer.

29. Gerry Rafferty - Right Down The Line
Hij was dat jaar even een wereldster maar is toch vooral een zeer getalenteerde singer-songwriter. Aangename stem, heerlijke song en productie.

30. Nazaré Pereira - Chero Da Carolina
Leuk om het na al die jaren het terug te horen. Even gezellige als melancholieke song, had een hit mogen worden.

20 20 02 Pablo Gad - Blood Suckers

Ooit had ik het idee alle platen van Neil Young chronologisch te beluisteren, maar ergens bij After the Gold Rush/Déjà-Vu moest ik daar al van terug komen. 3 of 4 Neil Young platen was eigenlijk wel genoeg. De laatste weken echter ben ik toch wel weer wat benieuwder geraakt door meer werk en dat komt door dit fraaie Comes a Time dat ik steeds mooier ben gaan vinden.

Dr. Alimantado brengt een mix van reggae en dub, al zie ik bij RYM ook 'deejay' staan. Heel erg aanstekelijk nummer in ieder geval, ben ook benieuwd naar het album uit dit jaar (waar dit nummer dan weer niet op staat).

Bij Kraftwerk heb ik het idee dat elke track van The Man Machine wel ergens als single is uitgebracht. Neon Lights voelt eigenlijk niet echt als een single, maar was dat wel in Europa.

90 singles deze week in alle lijsten, net zoveel als vorige week.

Opvallende zaken: de punten explosie bij de nummers 4, 5 en 6. Desondanks, leidt het maar tot een zeer geringe stijging in de posities.
En gevolgen heeft het ook. Onderaan kan opeens Bob Seger weer terug keren in de lijst, met 25 punten. Een heel laag aantal, eigenlijk moet je voor de nummer 20 altijd zo'n 30 punten hebben.

En er is natuurlijk een nieuwe nummer 1, met de Undertones. Het is een singletjes met veel financiële waarde. Ik zie in Engeland een versie van bijna € 300, de Nederlandse versie van Teenage kicks moet ook altijd nog bijna € 100 opbrengen.
Snel nog even gekeken in mijn eigen collectie. Maar nee, zelfs geen één. Het loopt alfabetisch van Ultravox naar Leo Unger en dan ben ik blijkbaar zelfs in Engeland nog nooit één enkele Undertones single tegen het lijf gelopen.

Ik ben zelf nog Gruppo Sportivo vergeten, maar het is nog vroeg in het jaar. Benieuwd ook waar het heen gaat met de klassieker van Joe Jackson.

Er zijn toch wel héél veel Blondie singles in de diverse landen uitgebracht. Nu weer Hanging on the telephone. In Engeland. Met een scheef oog zie ik dat Nederland klaar staat met Sunday girl. Het is toch wel spijtig dat dat destijds niet allemaal wat beter werd gecoördineerd. Maar alles bij elkaar schat ik toch al gauw, 6, 7 singles op jaarbasis.
Dan is natuurlijk 1978 een geweldig Blondie jaar, dat is weer wat anders.

Nieuwe albums en dus ook nieuwe singles voor Kate Bush en Billy Joel. The Pointer Sisters hebben een nieuw nummer dat nota bene is geschreven door Bruce Springsteen. Dat geeft ook een apart nummer aan de soul van het trio. Meat loaf heeft een volgende track uit. De titelsong nog en dan is het bijna klaar. Maar er is toch al heel wat afgehaald van Bat out of Hell.

Voor mij (nog) geen Y.M.C.A. van de Village People. Die single is ook inmiddels uitgebracht maar ik zou hier echt een drempel over moeten stappen. Ik vond het destijds verschrikkelijk.

Over een aantal weken komt de live versie van Herman Brood uit met mister Sweet d'Buster Bertus Borgers op sax. Die zal makkelijk de eerste plaats halen.

Deze softsoulformatie kon ook altijd op mijn goedkeuring rekenen door de zang van Gladys Knight al neigt het hier naar disco.

27. Clout - You've Got All Of Me
Een wat vergeten hitje in het zog van hun vorige 2 grotere hits. Niet onaardig met goede stemmenwerk en behoorlijk sterk refrein.
Cijfer: 6,5

28. Electric Light Orchestra - Sweet Talkin' Woman
Deze band bracht in de jaren '70 ook heel wat sterke singles (en albums). Kleurrijk door de violen en aanstekelijk refrein.

29. Dire Straits - Water Of Love / Down To The Waterline
Dire Straits was in één klap een supergroep geworden. Water Of Love is een sfeervolle en relaxte bluessong, Down To The Waterline zit een beetje in het vaarwater van Sultans of Swing, beiden gekenmerkt door de heerlijke gitaar van Marc Knopfler.
Cijfer: 9 / 8,5

30. Santana - Well All Right
Oorspronkelijk van Buddy Holly, Santana heeft dat nummer in een eigenzinnige, exotische versie gegoten.
Cijfer: 8

De single van Still believe bevat de studioversie van het nummer, niet de live-versie. 't Is maar dat je het weet...

Je hebt waarschijnlijk gelijk gaucho maar dan staat er een hoop fout op de verschillende sites (zie o.a de Nederlandse wiki). Wat ook raar is dat ze tegelijkertijd een (betere) live versie op het album Cha Cha en een studio versie op single uitbrengen.
