je zou zeggen dat de posities van The Beatles en The Kinks voorlopig nog weken onaantastbaar zijn, maar in de zomer van 1966 verschenen er meer megaklassiekers!

De hoogste binnerkomer is 'Bus Stop' van The Hollies. Ik verwacht dat ze samen met 'Out of Time' van Chris Farlowe nog wel een paar plaatsen gaan stijgen.

7. The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon
Heerlijk luie en lome song met briljante tekst zoals The Kinks dat kunnen brengen, past perfect bij een snikhete zomerdag.
Cijfer: 9

28. Will Andy / Micky Day - Oh, Oh, What A Kiss
Flauw en melig nummer met cheesy orgel, bovendien gejat van Shawn Elliott - Shame And Scandal In The Family (zie week 39 van 1965). 1966 was inderdaad een sterk hitjaar maar daarom was niet alles goed.
Cijfer: beide 2,5

30. James Brown and The Famous Flames - It's A Man's Man's Man's World
Indrukwekkende soulzang met indrukwekkende strijkers, dit kan nooit ofte nimmer stuk.
Cijfer: 9

34. The Yardbirds - Over Under Sideways Down
Vitale bluesy rocksong met een laagje psychedelica, aanstekelijk en enthousiast, dit nummer en deze band verdienden beslist meer erkenning.
Cijfer: 9

36. InCrowd - I'll Be Free
Deze band en dit nummer kende ik niet. Het is zeker niet slecht met leuke bluesy orgel maar in zijn geheel minder inventief dan hun tijdsgenoten.

37. Ike & Tina Turner - River Deep-Mountain High
Wat mij betreft bet beste nummer van Tina Turner dankzij de productie van Phil Spector waarin haar stem tegen de geluidsmuur prima tot haar recht komt.

39. Yvonne de Nijs met The Feetwarmers o.l.v. Gaby Dirne - Jimmy Walker
Een ouderwets maar gezellig nummer door de volkse en jazzy begeleiding en verhalende tekst.

Dit is waarschijnlijk mijn mooiste top 10 sinds het bestaan van dit topic. Ik zou bijna zeggen 'beter wordt het hierna nooit meer', maar 'God Only Knows' van The Beach Boys en 'Summer in the City'
van The Lovin' Spoonful komen er ook aan en ook 1967, door velen (en door mij) gezien als beste jaar in de geschiedenis van de popmuziek. Dus er staat ons nog veel geweldige muziek te wachten.

Het is dringen geblazen aan de top. 'Sunshine Superman', 'Out of Time' en 'Mother's Little Helper zouden in een andere periode met gemak de nummer 1 positie halen. Nu is het maar de vraag.
'I Want You' van Bob Dylan valt al na 4 weken uit de top 10 en 'Summertime' haalt het niet eens.

Behoorlijke verversing in de lijst met liefst 5 nieuwe binnenkomers en 4 platen die langer dan 10 weken genoteerd stonden die verdwijnen. En dan staan er nog genoeg songs in de wacht. The Stones en Donovan komen met bekende nummers, die bij beluistering nog beter blijken dan ik in mijn hoofd had. Van Donovan moet ik binnenkort maar eens de albums beluisteren. Hele fijne veelzijdige artiest afgaande op de singles die hij tot nu toe heeft uitgebracht. Ook wereldberoemd is het nummer van Jimmy Ruffin, waar ik nooit zoveel mee kon. Maar de laatste weken is het kwartje toch wel gevallen. Mooie soulplaat.

Grootste ontdekking deze week is Project Blue van The Banshees, een kneiterhard garagerocknummer. Dit zouden hedendaagse garagerockbands Thee Oh Sees of Ty Segall nu kunnen coveren op een optreden en niemand zou doorhebben dat het nummer al 50 jaar oud is: wat een energie!

Ook een ontdekking was Hey Joe in de uitvoering van Love, maar die bleek helaas alleen als promo en b-kant te zijn uitgebracht. Maar hun nieuwe reguliere single 7 And 7 Is is ook zeker goed genoeg om binnen te komen, al denk ik niet dat hij net zo'n succesvolle chartrun als My Little Red Book gaat beleven. Maar wie weet...

Beslist één van de mooiste stemmen in de popmuziek en ook hier staat de melodie als een huis met een tekst die je zo meezingt. Overigens een nummer uit 1961, werd ook door The Velvets opgenomen.

Als folk-rock band had The Lovin' Spoonful tot nu toe prettig in het gehoor liggende hits.
Met 'Summer In The City' een voor die tijd pittig nummer en met afstand hun beste maakten ze een onvergetelijke klassieker. Een ode aan het hete nachtleven van New York.

In 1967 gooide Love het op een andere boeg en brachten zij een fantastisch luisteralbum uit.
Met '7 and 7 Is' laat de band in 1966 nog garagerock van het beste soort horen.

Nancy was ik bijna vergeten. 'Friday's Child' vind ik één van haar betere nummers. Met dank aan één van de beste sing-songwriters van sixties: Lee Hazlewood.

Na zes weken weten The Kinks dan toch de nummer één positie te halen. Samen met The Beatles hebben ze al een maand lang een grote voorsprong op de rest.
Op 9 staan The Byrds opvallend hoog. In de Top 40 van 1966 haalden ze slechts een 33e plaats en vlogen ze er al na twee weken uit. UK nr 1 in 1966 Chris Farlowe blijft daarentegen een beetje achter.
De grootste kanshebber voor een notering volgende week is The Lovin' Spoonful met Summer in The City.

Legendarische protestsong van Belgische hippie-troubadour, natuurlijk beïnvloed door Bob Dylan maar met niet minder passie.

29. David Garrick / The Rolling Stones - Lady Jane
Beiden scoorden daarmee een hit maar ik prefereer duidelijk de versie van The Stones die wat soberder is maar toch sfeervol. David Garrick zingt iets vlakker en hier zorgen meer de stijkers voor de sfeer.
Cijfer 6,5 / 8,5

30. Gene Pitney - Nobody Needs Your Love
Aan zijn aparte, scherpe stem moet je wennen maar hij zingt met veel passie en het is een (overigens door Randy Newman geschreven) sterke song.
Cijfer: 8

33. Dave Berry - Mama
Zijn laatste hit en ook zijn minst goede, het is mij te sentimenteel al lijkt het voor zijn zang geknipt.
Cijfer: 5,5

The Walker Brothers - (Baby) You Don't Have To Tell Me
Melodramatische popsong van hoog niveau al is het niet zo'n klapper als The Sun Ain't Gonna' Shine Anymore. Maar de vocalen en begeleiding zijn wederom top en bepalen de mistroostige sfeer.
Cijfer: 8

39. Tommy James and The Shondells - Hanky Panky
Leuke jukebox-hit, simpel en een beetje rammelend maar dat is de charme van dit nummer.

Over 'God Only Knows' is al veel geschreven. Velen noemen dit nummer wonderschoon en het zou behoren tot de ultieme '60s song. Anderen noemen het zelfs een hoogtepunt uit de muziekgeschiedenis.
Ik ben het er helemaal mee eens, alhoewel mijn enthousiasme in de loop der tientallen jaren iets is getemperd. Ik heb het te vaak gehoord. Er is iets sprake van verzadiging.
Bij sommige nummers heb ik dat en bij andere nummers, zoals ik al eerder memoreerde ('Sunny Afternoon') weer niet. Maar het blijft een geweldig nummer, Net als die andere twee klassiekers van The Beach Boys 'Sloop John B' en 'Good Vibrations'.

Tim Hardin schreef veel wonderschone liedjes. Zijn beste nummers werden ook succesvol gecoverd door anderen. Ik schaar hem op één lijn met zijn tijdgenoot en groot kunstenaar, Nick Drake.
Bob Dylan noemde hem ooit 'De beste nog levende singer/songwriter ooit'.
Helaas is hij al lang niet meer onder ons. Zijn hele volwassen leven was hij een heroïne junk.
Op 39 jarige leeftijd overleed hij aan een overdosis. 'Don't Make Promises' gaat de top 10 halen.

The Velvet Underground - All Tomorrow's Parties
Ik heb mij altijd afgevraagd hoe dit nummer had geklonken als Lou Reed de zangpartij voor zich had genomen. Muzikaal is het prachtig, maar hoezeer ik het ook probeer, ik kan maar niet wennen
aan die ijzig kille stem en dat gruwelijke Duitse accent van Nico.

Ik denk overigens dat minstens 5 liedjes straks in de top 10 van mijn jaarlijst komen. Wat een week!

Zo, dat zijn nog eens nieuwe binnenkomers. Tim Hardin had ik al in het vizier, Beach Boys pas voor volgende week (kwam de 18e uit volgens RateYourMusic, maar blijkbaar al wel in het goede weeknummer). En VU is prachtig, ik kan gelukkig ook erg van Nico's stem genieten.

Deze komt bij mij volgende week binnen:
Nadeel van de single vind ik dat die veel korter is dan albumversie.
