Top-40: week 34 van 1966.

5. The Beatles - Yellow Submarine / Eleanor Rigby
Weer een Beatles-nummer met een dubbele A-kant. Het maffe Yellow Submarine lijkt simpel maar is in zijn absurditeit geniaal waarbij er gesampeld wordt avant-la-lettre. Eleanor Rigby vind ik echter een stuk beter, heerlijke vioolpartijen en samenzang om over de melodie en tekst te zwijgen.
Cijfer: 7,5 / 9,5

The Rolling Stones - Mother's Little Helper
Een onterecht niet zo'n bekend Stones-nummer, als de melodie niet catchy is weet ik het niet meer. De samenzang in het refrein en die aparte gitaarsound maar het nummer vrij uniek.
Cijfer: 9

36. Roek Williams and The Fighting Cats - Take Your Time
Kende ik niet, charmant folky nummer, wat simpel maar sfeervol met mooie samenzang en violen. Nederland bracht toen beslist veel mooie muziek uit.
Cijfer: 8

37. Tee-Set - Early In The Morning
De eerste hit van Tee-Set, klinkt nog bluesy. Iets minder tijdloos dan de andere nummers deze week maar de herkenbare, bluesy zang van Peter Tetteroo en de orgel maken het een nummer dat beslist een plaats verdient in de Nederpop.
Cijfer: 7,5

39. Cliff Richard - Vision
Cliff Richard heb ik nooit tot de top gerekend maar ik vind hem een aangename, zalvende stem hebben. Sfeervol en romantisch nummer hoewel lang niet zijn beste of bekendste.

In verhouding met de meeste andere singles in mijn top 20 heb ik 'Seven and Seven Is' van Love minder vaak gehoord. Ik vond het altijd al het beste nummer van hun album 'Da Capo', maar tegelijkertijd gaf ik altijd meer aandacht aan hun album 'Forever Changes' mede omdat één van mijn all time favorites er op staat: 'Alone Again Or'.
Geboeid door het nummer ben ik ook wat cover versies gaan beluisteren, gespeeld door niet de minsten, Rush, Alice Cooper, Robert Plant, The Ramones. Ze kunnen geen van allen tippen aan het origineel.
En zo krijg ik steeds meer respect voor Arthur Lee. (R.I.P.) Hij was de frontman, de motor en de songwriter van de band. 'Seven and Seven Is' blijkt een groeibriljant. Hoe vaker ik het beluister hoe beter het wordt.
Het is proto-punk van de eerste orde. Wat een power, één grote trip. I Love it. Mijn nieuwe nummer 1.

Het platenlabel Motown heeft veel beroemde artiesten voortgebracht.
Dit had Motown vooral te danken aan het geweldige songwriter- en productieteam die zij in dienst hadden, bestaande uit Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier en Eddie Holland. Dit trio leverde met hun composities en arrangementen een belangrijke bijdrage aan de typerende 'Motown-sound'.
Martha & The Vandellas, The Miracles, The Supremes, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers en vele anderen hebben hun populariteit te danken aan dit songwriterteam. In de jaren zestig schudden ze het ene na de andere fantastische liedje uit de mouw.
Door sommigen wordt 'Dancing In The Street' beschouwd als de beste van Motown. Anderen noemen 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' of 'Tracks Of My Tears'.
Holland Dozier Holland schreven ook onvergetelijke classics. Vooral voor The Supremes. Wie kent deze nummer 1 hits niet:

27. The Beach Boys - God Only Knows
Zowat één van hun beste singles: wat meer ambitieus, diepgang en originaliteit maar hun typische zonnige sound blijft intact. Met gewaagde samenzang en arrangementen weten zij een schijnbaar luchtige maar ingenieuze popparel te brengen, iets waar The Beatles, Abba en R.E.M. ook meester in waren.

29. Outsiders - Keep On Trying
Beat van Nederlandse bodem met leuk rinkelend gitaartje, een tikkeltje rommelig klinkend maar door de spontaniteit tevens charmant.

37. Cliff Bennett and The Rebel Rousers - Got To Get You Into My Life
Een Beatles-cover dat teveel een kopie is van het origineel en niets toevoegt. In dat geval luister ik liever naar het origineel.

38. Sam The Sham and The Pharaohs - Little Red Riding Hood
Leuke parodie op een bekend sprookje, samen met het bekende fuifnummer Wooly Bully hun beste.

39. Sandy Coast - We'll Meet Again
Nederlandse bands kwamen toen massaal op. Een bewerking van het nummer dat vooral bekend is door Vera Lynn in de stijl van The Searchers gebracht. Niet slecht gedaan maar hun eigen smoelwerk moest nog komen.

40. The Pretty Things - A House In The Country
Rauwe bluesy rock, niet erg bijzonder voor dit genre maar de energie en passie zijn er wel. Dat rinkelend gitaartje in het midden had at langer mogen duren.

Dat was een prettige verrassing toen ik er achter kwam dat 'I Can Only Give You Everything' van het album Them Again op single is uitgebracht.

De tekst van 'I'm a Boy' van The Who fascineert mij nadat ik vernam dit deze single in Amerika niet veel deed. Puriteins als Amerika in die dagen was. Dit nummer gaat namelijk over een jongen wiens moeder hem als een meisje opvoedt, terwijl de jongen zijn echte seksuele identiteit aan het ontdekken is.

Onze eigen analyticus LucM oordeelde terecht betrekkelijk terughoudend over 'Got To Get You Into My Life' van Cliff Bennett and The Rebel Rousers. Hij noemt de single een Beatles-cover dat teveel een kopie is van het origineel en niets toevoegt. Hij luistert liever naar het origineel........... en ik ook, maar aangezien The Beatles dit geweldige nummer niet op single uitbrachten neem ik graag genoegen met deze cover.

The Outsiders was toch wel een unieke Nederlandse band. Wally Tax zorgde door zijn uitspraak voor een apart en herkenbaar stemgeluid. 'Keep On Trying' gaat echter geen hoge ogen gooien in mijn top 20.

Volstrekt niet mee eens, van terughoudendheid mag geen sprake zijn. Kwestie van smaak wellicht.

Maar laat ik hierbij dan wel aangeven wat Cliff Bennett wel degelijk toevoegt aan het origineel waardoor het een hele goede cover is:

1) Het veel meer soulgetinte stemgeluid van Cliff Bennett. Paul zingt meer poppy. Cliffs diepe stem lijkt hier op de stem van David Clayton-Thomas die zo heerlijkt past bij de blazers van Blood, Sweat and Tears. Maar Cliff is met zijn stem en blazers drie jaar vroeger. Ook de uithalen bevallen mij zeer en doseert hij precies goed. Vergelijk de eerste frase "Ooh, did I tell you I need you" met die prachtige schorre uithaal op you. En dan die hoge uithaal op "nee-eed you" op het eind. Paul blijft dan veel meer op de vlakte in de lage registers.

2) Het hele nummer is sneller dan the Beatles en kent eveneens een aantal spannende versnellingen. Zoals bijvoorbeeld in het intro zit een lekkere drumroffel die ik bij Ringo mis.

3) Er is gekozen voor een piano die af en toe prominent is. Zo komt deze zo rond 1.50 i.p.v. de gitaarsolo rond 1.54 van The Beatles. Maar ook hier zit bijvoorbeeld een fraaie slide down als toevoeging.

Deze toevoegingen hoeven uiteraard geen verbeteringen te zijn, maar verslechteringen zijn het zeker niet en ze maken voor mij het nummer het beluisteren waard. Naast die van the Beatles.
Overigens heeft McCartney de single van Cliff Bennett geproduceerd. Zou Paul een nummer hebben geproduceerd dat zoveel minder is?

Cliff Bennett gaat bij mij morgen flink stijgen. En mochten sommigen uitsluitend of ook voor the Beatles-versie gaan. In november 1966 komt een Spaanse EP uit met het origineel. En op 31 mei 1976 komt een echte single op de Amerikaanse markt als promotie voor een compilatie LP van the Beatles. Haalt volkomen terecht alsnog de Amerikaanse top 10.

Om nog even door te gaan op de covers van Revolver. The Eyes doen Good day sunshine en Episode six doen Here there and everywhere. Persoonlijk vind ik deze wel minder dan the Beatles maar daar denkt Hitweek in 1966 anders over wat betreft Episode six. Bijna net zo goed zo stellen ze. Ze wisten toen nog niet dat uit deze groep de rockband Deep Purple zou voortkomen. The Eyes komen wat mij betreft met een goede B-kant ter compensatie. Datzelfde geldt voor the Electra's alhoewel zij de titel van the Eyes lijken te weerspreken.
Them, the Dell-vets en The Sonics zorgen voor het verdere gitaarwerk met energieke zang.
Tenslotte zien we drie soulgetinte platen waarbij the Ad-libs nog sterk in de doo wop periode van 55 jaar terug blijven hangen, en zeer sterk gezongen. Pat Powdrill maakt een prachtige maar helaas in de hitlijsten genegeerde dansplaat. En the Elgins haalden met hun single wel de hitlijsten alhoewel in Engeland pas in 1971.

De B-kant is bekender maar L'amour Avec Toi mag er ook zijn, licht folky met mooie stem. Love Me Please Love Me vind ik een stuk beter door de melodie en de pianobegeleiding en hier blijkt hij vocaal nog meer in zijn mars te hebben.

36. Chris Montez - The More I See You
Chris Montez voorzien van een Motownritme, geen slecht resultaat maar echt warm loop ik er ook niet van mede door de lalala's en de wat luie zang.

Cuby + Blizzards was in de regio al razend populair en maakte na drie mislukte singles een landelijke doorbraak met het psychedelische 'Back Home'. Nederland maakte kennis met twee supertalenten, Harry Muskee en Eelco Gelling.

Het is precies 50 jaar geleden, op zaterdag 3 september 1966, dat op de Nederlandse TV de allereerste aflevering van "Ja zuster, nee zuster" werd uitgezonden. Deze TV-serie is legendarisch geworden vanwege de liedjes maar ook omdat al vrij snel nadat de serie in 1968 was beëindigd alle banden ervan werden gewist. Er zijn nu alleen nog maar wat losse fragmenten over.

Ook in mijn geheugen over deze serie is veel gewist. Bovendien was onze buizen TV regelmatig stuk in de jaren 60, en die lampen knapten altijd stuk op zaterdag, dus ik heb ook diverse afleveringen gemist.
Maar van de allereerste aflevering kan ik mij wel de beelden herinneren. Vooral de openingsscène.

Een rinkelende telefoon, een verpleegster (Klivia) die de telefoon oppakt en een woedende buurman (Boordevol) aan de lijn krijgt. Deze buurman is tevens de huisbaas en doet zijn beklag over alle herrie en herinnert Klivia eraan dat het een rusthuis zou worden, terwijl niemand in het huis oud is en de patiënten helemaal niet rustig zijn, gezien het lawaai.
'Het is een rusthuis,' aldus Klivia. 'In mijn huis doet iedere bewoner wat hij het liefste doet. Bertus knutselt. Jet maakt pruiken. En de Ingenieur doet proefjes in de kelder. Doe wat je graag doet, daar rust je van uit.

Interessante filosofie uit de jaren 60. Doe wat je het liefste doet, dan wordt je rustig.

Ik maak heel graag lijstjes maar of ik er rustig van wordt?
Ik doe nu actief aan 4 topics mee. Uiteindelijk probeer ik vanaf 1953 tot weet ik wanneer alle jaren van wekelijkse lijstjes te voorzien. En alles te beluisteren van wat er op de topics wordt ingebracht. Als ik dat met 4 topics volhou dan ben ik rond 2035 klaar. Ik ben dan inmiddels ouder dan menige acteur en actrice uit de TV-serie "Ja zuster, nee zuster" geworden is. En, gezien mijn bejaarde leeftijd, rijp voor het rusthuis.

De banden van "Ja zuster, nee zuster" zijn niet alleen gewist inmiddels is om onduidelijke redenen de website jazusterneezuster.nl inmiddels ook al uit de lucht. In 2011 nog met veel tam tam gelanceerd.

Ik hoop dat onze lijstjes die we op deze site hebben gezet niet gewist worden. Zoveel mooi werk dat kan verdwijnen. Daarom heb ik besloten om van alle relevante topics een back up te gaan maken. Ook van al jullie lijstjes. Je weet maar nooit.

Dat is pas echt een rustgevende actie.

Als je maar vier binnenkomers hebt dan wil ik ze wel bespreken. The Who met "I'm a boy" stond vorige week op nr. 41 en stijgt lekker door. Deze is door Heicro al uitstekend ingewijd.

Eerder in 1966 had The Who Muddy Waters "I'm a man" uitgebracht. Een LP-track die later op single is gezet. Die had ik ten onrechte in de singlereleaseoverzichten uit Frankrijk uit februari 1966 als oudste staan maar eigenlijk had België de primeur al in december 1965.

Een LP-track die nog veel later op single (EP) is gezet is de al uit april 1965 stammende "Needle of death" van Bert Jansch. Reden voor de belangstelling is de promotie van zijn derde LP "Jack Orion". De EP is een verzameling van de vijf meest populaire nummers van zijn eerste twee LP's uit 1965 met verder "the Wheel", "Tinker's blues" en "Green are your eyes (courting blues)". Helaas ontbreekt wel het fraaie "Lucky thirteen" maar het prachtige "Running From Home" staat er wel op.

De thuisbasis als onderwerp is populair in deze tijd want twee andere legendarische popgroepen (Cuby and the Blizzards en the Spencer Davis group) bezingen tevens dit onderwerp. Bij the Spencer Davis group zitten er mooie beelden bij. Die kende ik nog niet en dit is een fraaie opname. die goed bewaard is gebleven.

Wat de bewaarde liedjes betreft. Ik ben het met Heicro eens dat het niveau van "Ja zuster Nee zuster" soms erg bedenkelijk is. Interessant is dat Heicro de LP-hoes van een operette site heeft gehaald. Daar komt men met de mededeling dat "Ja zuster, nee zuster" zeer geschikt voor Nederlandse operette is. Dat is ook niet direct mijn favoriete genre.

En wat de beelden betreft. Er wordt op internet gesteld dat de kosten van opslag van een videoband de reden was van het wissen, maar het is vooral ook de videoband zelf. Een video-opnameband Ampex van een uur was niet alleen groot, deze kostte in 1966 meer dan 900 gulden. Met een inflatiecorrectie van 50 jaar kom je in vergelijking met de prijzen van nu op meer dan 2500 euro. 25 jaar geleden kon je een cassette-opnameband volgens de laatste technieken voor bijna duizend keer minder bij de Vroom en Dreesman kopen.

Ja zuster, nee zuster was maar een voorbeeld. Er zijn ook talloze beeldopnames uit de jaren 60 verloren gegaan van TV-programma's met popmuziek. Thuis werd er ook nog vrijwel niets opgenomen. Niet alleen de banden maar ook de videorecorders waren in die tijd onbetaalbaar.
Sommigen hebben destijds het TV-beeld maar gefilmd met een 8 mm camera. Zoals van het Avro-popprogramma (voorloper van Toppop) Moef ga ga. Met de Nederlandse band Skope met het uit november 1966 stammende "Be mine again".
Erg omslachtig en kwalitatief twijfelachtig maar zo gaan de beelden tenminste toch niet verloren.
