The Lovin' Spoonful met 'Summer in The City' is de enige echte grote stijger. Ze staan nu op 1 en stoten The Beatles na een wekenlange hegemonie van de kroon.
Ondanks winst in punten verloor Donovan met 'Sunshine Superman' drie plaatsen vorige week.
Maar zelfs na vijf weken scoort hij nog steeds meer punten. Kennelijk moesten sommigen nog aan dit liedje wennen. Donovan stijgt van 10 naar 7.

Leuk dat je deze ook oppikt.

Ik zie dat de man nog steeds actief is: afgelopen weekend is er een nieuw album van hem uitgekomen.

Ja erg leuke muziek..wist niet dat ie nog actief was

Bij Bob Lind moet ik vaak aan censuur denken.

In 1986 tijdens het radioprogramma de avondspits besloot Frits Spits het nummer Jeannie van Falco niet meer te draaien. Dit na een brief van een luisteraar die het nummer teveel vond weghebben van de lustmoord door de Oostenrijkse seriemoordenaar Jack Unterweger. Frits Spits vond de denkbeelden in de song verwerpelijk. Slachtoffers van verkrachtingen zouden last kunnen hebben van dit nummer.
Die censuur heb ik nooit begrepen. De denkbeelden van een moordenaar vind ik ook verwerpelijk maar dat betekent nog niet dat ik dan alleen maar muziek beluister van mensen die niet verwerpelijke denkbeelden hebben.

Want dan valt er in 1966 veel muziek onder deze censuur.
In 1966 nam Napoleon XIV een nummer op waarin hij de volledige gekte beschrijft nadat hij verlaten is door zijn geliefde. They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!
Hij lijkt ongevaarlijk maar volgens mij moet je hem niet tegenkomen. Hij heet niet voor niets Napoleon XIV. Overigens werd deze gestoorde man door diverse radiostations eveneens geboycot.

Vergelijkbaar geval is dus Bob Lind. Spookachtig en eng is zijn tekst in het hier veel geëerde nummer Elusive Butterfly.
"You might wake up some morning to the sound of something moving past your window in the wind, and if you’re quick enough to rise, you’ll catch a fleeting glimpse of someone’s fading shadow."
Dit is duidelijk een stalker. Wat zou dat doen bij mensen die gestalkt zijn in hun leven?
"If you remember something there, that glided past you followed close by heavy breathing…"
Heavy breathing?
Volgens mij is dit nog een gestoorde stalker ook. En dan zegt hij ook nog dat hij je geen pijn zal doen. Ook deze werd door een aantal radiostations geboycot.

John Lennon vergeleek The Beatles in februari 1966 met Jezus. We zijn populairder dan Jezus. Als hij nou Napoleon had genoemd dan was dat minder erg geweest maar dan zou het ook minder opgevallen zijn. Plaatverbrandingen volgden in de zomer daarna in het zuidelijk deel van de Verenigde Staten. Denkt John Lennon soms dat hij Jezus is?
Maar ook tekstueel werden bepaalde Beatlenummers onder de loep genomen. Run for Your life, een single uit januari 1966 gaat in jaloezie en bezitterigheid erg ver. Er wordt gedreigd met het doden van de geliefde.
“Well I’d rather see you dead, little girl, than to be with another man, you better keep your head, little girl, or you won’t know where I am”

Verwerpelijk? Natuurlijk. Je zult maar zo'n man in je leven hebben meegemaakt.
Boycotten? Nee, want dit is prachtige muziek. Toch werd ook deze door sommigen geboycot.

Op de b-kant van de gestoorde Napoleon staat het nummer van de A-kant. Maar dan in omgekeerde richting afgespeeld. Yawa Em Ekat Ot Gnimoc Er'yeht. Geen geweldig nummer overigens maar wel een creatieve vondst. Je hoort er van alles in. Sindsdien gingen diverse mensen ook Beatlenummers omgekeerd afdraaien en hoorden er gestoorde en duivelse boodschappen in. Alle Beatlenummers zouden moeten worden geboycot!

Eleanor Rigby die was toch ook gestoord? Eenzaamheid dat tot gekte leidt, je zult het maar hebben. Boycotten? Nee, dat doen we hier uitsluitend op grond van smaak.
En uiteraard op grond van releasedatum. Want een nummer dat al in de lijstjes voorkomt voordat het al dan niet is uitgebracht of zelfs is opgenomen, dat is pas echt gestoord.

Was Eleanor Rigby overigens niet pas van 5 augustus 1966?

Meteen wat mutaties op bovenstaande lijst. Ik was net te laat met opslaan dus neem ik ze nu mee.

Er is geen 1965 meer in het releaseoverzicht opgenomen. Er zijn ook hier nog wel mutaties maar die zijn voor de huidige lijstjes niet meer zo interessant. Mogelijk dat deze mutaties in de toekomst worden meegenomen in een volledig overzicht van 1965.

Er zijn, wat 1966 betreft, diverse nummers verwijderd omdat ze dubbel waren opgenomen. Dit staat per nummer duidelijk vermeld en deze zijn gesorteerd per maand. Ik stel voor aan het eind van het jaar alles nog een keer te indexeren zodat er een duidelijk totaaloverzicht ontstaat. Daarbij kunnen diverse categorieën worden vermeld.
Daarbij behoort de categorie Nederlandse top 40 hits die door LucM wekelijks worden behandeld en inmiddels meer dan 100 nummers bevat.

De tweede, deels overlappende categorie selectie van Amerikaanse en Engelse hits wil ik gaan uitbreiden naar alle top 40 hits van Groot-Britannië en de Verenigde Staten. Dat betekent dat ik daarop nog een inhaalslag ga doen. Daarmee wordt deze categorie beter vergelijkbaar met de Nederlandse categorie maar we kunnen dan ook herleiden waar we zelf de meeste toppers binnen dit topic vandaan halen, wat 1966 betreft.
In bovenstaande lijst zijn al veel Amerikaanse en Engelse hits opgenomen zoals van de Britse Ken Dodd (885). Deze komiek uit Liverpool is erg populair in Engeland in die tijd zoals André van Duin tien jaar later bij ons. En net als Andere André maakte Different Dodd serieuze ballads, dit keer op de melodie van Beethovens pianosonate nr. 8 (opus 13) tweede deel. De Australische countryzanger Frank Ifield (801) en de Engelse popster Billy Fury (841) doen het ook altijd goed in Engelse hitlijsten. Ze coveren nummers van Hank Williams en Tenessee Ernie Ford.

Tot de selectieve megahits uit andere landen behoren uit Italië Tema (775) en uit Frankrijk Adamo (776). Beiden halen de nummer 1 positie in die landen. De Zuid-Afrikaanse nummer 1 van juli komt ook voorbij in een op folk geïnspireerd humoristisch nummer (788) en het meestal folky Ierland met Gregory (799), nummer 1 aldaar.
In de categorie "originals" van later veel gecoverde singles heb ik dit keer ook inspiratiebronnen meegenomen. Talk to the grapevine (805) is tekstueel duidelijk een inspiratiebron voor "I heard it through the grapevine" van latere datum. Mrs. Applebee (836) is een ander voorbeeld en wordt later weer gecoverd door David Garrick die in mei nog een hitversie opnam van Lady Jane van The Rolling Stones (778).

We zien wederom een aantal tijdgeestnummers voorbijkomen. TV-series zoals the Saint (232) zijn populair en de bijbehorende muziek wordt op single gezet.
Het thema lang haar is in deze maanden een duidelijk issue. Johnny Hallyday (833) gaat in 1966 tekeer tegen de langharigen met een nummer waarin hij het verband legt tussen lange haren en kortzichtige visies. Hij reageert daarmee vooral op Antoine (934) en Edouard (890).
Foto's van Johnny Hallyday van 5 jaar na 1966 tonen hem overigens met het haar tot over de schouders dus het is mij niet duidelijk of hij deze visie uit 1966 later ook een kortzichtige mening vond. Peter Muller (773) komt voorbij met een overigens vrij matige single die het tegenovergestelde lijkt te beweren.
Peter Muller is overigens bekend van hitweek. Vanaf september 1966 begint deze popkrant met een nieuwe rubriek schrijfgerij. Daarin worden wekelijks nieuwe singlereleases besproken. Het is wellicht interessant om deze hitweeksingles hier ook te behandelen, er is hier weinig van op internet te vinden. Persoonlijk vind ik LucM vaak beter en dat is niet om te coifferen, het wordt wel duidelijk wat ik bedoel als dit voorbij komt.

Dan hebben we nog de categorie populaire artiesten bij onze topicgenoten. Sarah Vaughan deed het goed bij Arrie en haar nieuwste single is wederom een sterke cover (785). Ike en Tina Turner doen het meestal ook goed (823) in de persoonlijke lijstjes.

Tot de categorie "eerste single(s)" van bekende artiesten heb ik dit keer Giorgio (804) opgenomen. Inderdaad, het betreft hier de van oorsprong Italiaanse artiest Giorgio Moroder die later met Donna Summer de discoklassieker I feel love maakte. Bekend is inmiddels de eerste single van The Mothers of Invention met Frank Zappa (852) omdat die de persoonlijke lijstjes haalde.

In de categorie populaire genres zien we garage rock, ska en soul. Ska is zich duidelijk aan het ontwikkelen naar Rocksteady een tragere en zwoelere variant. In sommige lijstjes zagen we al Hoptone Lewis (917) en de Heptones (847). Interessant is om hier de ontwikkeling van Delroy Wilson (841) te volgen in 1966. Er zijn verder nog duidelijke gevallen van oorspronkelijke ska soms met een Nederlandse saus zoals bij de Antiliaanse Alberto (777).

Garage rock wordt ook volwassener en gaat allerlei nieuwe invloeden aan met bijvoorbeeld soul (825) en psychedelica (949) hoewel er altijd nummers zijn die nog sterk aanleunen tegen de rock and roll uit de jaren 50 en de vroege jaren 60 (873, 853) en rhythm en blues (826). Soms wil men veel ruigere varianten van bekende nummers maken (854). Veel Australische band trouwens dit keer in het rockgenre met The Atlantics (867) en The Cherokees (818).

Soul bivakkeert duidelijk tussen de gladde Motown variant uit Detroit met The Supremes (946) en Marvin Gaye (874), de minder gepolijste zuidelijke Memphis variant met Carla Thomas (297, 824) en Eddie Floyd (870), de vroege Philly soul met de Intruders (939) en de Chicago variant met the Impressions (830). Een ontdekking binnen dit topic is de San Francisco variant van het Money label (779, 784, 370).

Top-40: week 32 van 1966.

23. The Lovin' Spoonful - Summer In The City
Hun bekendste nummer al hebben ze nog meer goede singles uitgebracht. Maar dit is een onverwoestbare klassieker die even zomers als inventief klinkt.

27. Napoleon XIV / Hugo De Groot / Floris VI - They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha, Haaa! / Ze nemen me eindelijk mee / Ze nemen me eindelijk mee, ha-haa!
Heerlijk maffe single van Napoleon XIV, geniaal in zijn absurdisme al stelt het muzikaal natuurlijk weinig voor. De twee Nederlandstalige covers kunnen er niet aan tippen.

29. Los Bravos - Black Is Black
Een beatgroep uit Spanje met net als dat van The Lovin' Spoonful een onverwoestbaar nummer met heerlijke bas, melodie, meezingtekst en zang.

Opgewekte blues met stemmige blazers en orgel, een geschikt nummer op ermee op te staan.

Vandaag, precies 50 jaar geleden, 5 augustus 1966 lag de overtreffende trap van 'Rubber Soul' in de winkels: 'Revolver'.
Dit album was een ware metamorfose vergeleken met eerder werk en bovendien grensverleggend.
Tot op de dag van vandaag is het één van mijn favoriete albums.
The Beatles lieten drie jaar na 'Please Please Me' een ongekende vernieuwingsdrang zien.
'Yellow Submarine' valt nog in de categorie vrolijke meezinger, maar 'Eleanor Rigby' is dankzij het arrangement van 'vijfde Beatle' George Martin en zijn klassieke strijkersensemble een juweeltje en in 1966 zeer vernieuwend.

LucM mag van mij altijd doorgaan want de top 40 gaat ook door. En als hij zo doorgaat dan zal hij minstens 20.000 singles hebben besproken als we alleen al de periode 1965 tot en met 2016 nemen. Het is knap hoe hij in een paar zinnen zijn mening over een single uit, iedere keer weer met variatie.
Wat dat betreft is zijn Avatar, een planeet, uitstekend gekozen. Deze draait maar door, hij is reusachtig groot en de atmosfeer is gevarieerd.
Ik quote hem graag vooral als ik het er mee eens ben. En net als bij Heicro ben ik het zelden met hem oneens.
Dat komt ook omdat we generatie- en genregenoten zijn. 1966 komt er bij ons heel goed vanaf.

Wat generatie betreft. Ik kan mij herinneren hoe ik ooit met een oom van mij, geboren in 1917 en inmiddels lang geleden alweer overleden, een aantal toppers uit de jaren 60 doornam. Mijn oom hield niet van geschreeuw en ook niet van elektrische gitaren. Dat werd geen vrolijke analyse van zijn kant.
Datzelfde gevoel bekruipt mij als ik LucM latere top 40's zie beoordelen.
In 1991 wordt hij al minder scheutig met hoge cijfers. En als gevolg daarvan kritisch bejegend door een topicgenoot van een latere generatie herman, zie hier.

In 2016 wordt dat beeld niet minder. Een voorbeeld:
Ter vergelijking het beste top 40 nummer uit 1966, Sloop John B van the Beach Boys scoorde 587 punten. Mike Posner heeft inmiddels al 930 punten. Dus als deze niet in het collectieve geheugen blijft hangen dan weet ik het niet meer.

Toch had ik ook ongeveer hetzelfde gevoel als LucM toen ik bovenstaande plaat voor het eerst hoorde. We hadden beter naar nog weer een generatie later, Arrie moeten luisteren.
Grappig genoeg scoort dit nummer weer slechter bij Herman.
Is smaak dan toch leeftijd- en periodegebonden? Of zou het toevallig aan het genre kunnen liggen?

Wat genre betreft. In de flop 10 van LucM staan veelal singles uit het Nederlandstalige of soms Duitstalige schlager- en smartlapgenre. Dit genre is niet aan hem en eveneens niet aan mij besteed.
Ik vraag mij wel eens af waarom LucM dit nog beoordelen wil want als je er vijf gehad hebt dan heb je het wel gehad. Ook hier komt het zelden voor dat ik mij verbaas:
Een zeldzaamheid dus. Dit verbaasde me want naar mijn mening ontlopen deze twee elkaar niet zoveel. Het eerste nummer (uit 1972) is niet helemaal een kopie van Duo X. Het is duidelijk een andere compositie. Qua arrangementen, thema en zang zijn er uiteraard wel grote overeenkomsten. Hepie en Hepie (uit 1980) zijn compositorisch wel een kopie van Send me the pillow that you dream on van Hank Locklin. En dan vind ik qua tekst het origineel veel spannender. Zou dat kussen door de brievenbus passen?

Maar het is 1966 hier in dit topic en dan ga je vergelijken. Even goed als Hepie en Hepie is bijvoorbeeld de single Sorrow van the Merseys (deed het hier goed bij verschillende topicgenoten). Deze kreeg van LucM ook een 7.
En als we Hepie en Hepie met dezelfde compositie willen vergelijken: mij bevalt "Send me the pillow" van Peter and Gordon uit februari 1966 veel beter. Maar tegen een andere smaak en zeker guilty pleasures valt natuurlijk niet veel in te brengen.

Ik hoop dus zeker niet dat LucM stopt want ik beleef er veel plezier aan. Het stoort mij slechts als LucM constateert dat er geen clip gevonden is.
Want er is niets zo storend als een onvolledig naslagwerk. Begin deze eeuw kocht ik bij de kringloop een encyclopedie. Er bleek één deel te ontbreken. En uiteraard bleek ik dat ontbrekende deel steeds nodig te hebben. Gelukkig bleken de overige delen uitstekend te branden op een koude nazomeravond in de vuurkorf.
Van veel overgeslagen nummers zijn inmiddels clips beschikbaar dus ik hoop ooit op een inhaalslag van inmiddels honderden nummers.

Verder is de top 40 zelf ook onvolledig.
Natuurlijk in alles van voor 1965. Maar ook daarna met nummers die eigenlijk in Nederland een hit (of tip) hadden moeten worden (sommigen hadden daarbij eerst uitgebracht moeten worden in Nederland op single).
Een heel hoog cijfer maar ik moet toegeven dat ik ook een zwak heb voor deze plaat. Het nummer doet mij wel denken aan "I Can't Help Myself" van the Four tops. Dat nummer is wel degelijk in Nederland in 1965 uitgebracht maar geen hit geworden in de Nederlandse top 40.
En zo zijn er meer. The Young Rascals met Good lovin, Gloria Jones met Tainted love, Donovan met Turquoise. Van singles van the The Seeds, Jacques Brel en the 13th floor elevators is geen enkel spoor te bekennen. En dit is slechts een kleine selectie van onze wekelijkse top 20.

Goede songs mogen niet in de vergetelheid belanden zo stelt LucM vast. Kunnen we daarom ook ooit een analyse van deze ontbrekende "pareltjes" verwachten?

Ik zat er al een paar weken aan te denken, maar heb besloten uit te breiden naar een top 40, net als in 1991 en 2016. Ik moest steeds meer fijne nummers buiten mijn lijst houden of te vroeg afscheid nemen van grote hits en dat zou de komende tijd zeker niet minder worden.

Van de nieuwe binnenkomers loopt Maurice & The Radiants het meest in het oog. Een single van een paar maanden terug alweer, maar blijkbaar zelfs aan de aandacht van Marzipaintree ontsnapt, want in zijn overzichten vond ik hem niet terug. Ontdekte hem wel indirect via zijn overzicht, want volgens mij speelde YouTube hem automatisch af nadat ik eerst een ander nummer had aangeklikt (ik geloof Ike and Tina Turner's versie van Beauty Is Only Skin Deep). Hoe dan ook, een heerlijke northern soul plaat. Als dat pianootje na een paar seconden invalt ben ik eigenlijk al verkocht.

Ik woon in een deel van Nederland waar veel dingen veel later gebeuren dan elders. Dat heeft zijn voordelen want voor mij is 1966 dan ook minder ver terug. The Analogues hebben onlangs pas in mijn buurt gespeeld lang nadat ze in de streken van herman en heicro gespeeld hadden en ik moet toegeven, inderdaad een aanrader! Ze komen het komend jaar met nieuw oud repertoire van the Beatles: Sgt. Pepper's lonely heart club band.

En ik heb vooral genoten van de ijzersterke replay van "Good day sunshine" en "Got to get you into my life". Inderdaad de enige twee nummers die deze avond gespeeld werden van:
De top 40 is uiteraard ook onvolledig wat albums betreft om nog even door te gaan op gisteren. Wat dat betreft hadden we de voorloper van Mega top 50, de parool top 20. Deze werd in 1966 uitgezonden door het radioprogramma tijd voor teenagers. Die namen gewoon albums mee in de lijst. Revolver kwam op 13 augustus binnen op nummer 5. Je kunt hier zien hoe de volledige lijst er toen uitzag.

Opvallend is dat al onze topicgenoten dit album al beoordeeld hebben behalve luigifort en ondergetekende. Het wordt tijd dus. luigifort, wat jij?

Als ik de beoordeling mag omzetten naar rapportcijfers van 1 tot 10 dan liegen de cijfers er niet om: herman, heicro en johan de witt geven een 9 (evenals oud-topicgenoten als Arrie en ArthurDZ), 50tracks en LucM geven zelfs een 10.
Alleen Justus18 geeft een 4!
Overigens scoren diverse Beatles albums bij Justus18 heel goed en scoort ook Beatles for sale bij Justus18 hoger dan Revolver. I want to tell you, love you to, Justus18!

Wat dit betreft kan ik mij redelijk vinden in de mening van herman:
En dan noemt herman helaas niet bovenstaande Revolver nummers van The Analogues, die mogen er wat mij betreft bij. Overigens Yellow Submarine, cheesy, mee eens. En Taxman (inderdaad van Harrison) is heel sterk. Wie kan het beter formuleren als herman?:
Laat ik nu maar eens eindelijk een Start! maken met mijn allereerste albumwaardering. Revolver.
Jullie zullen wel zien wat het krijgt.

Scherp opgemerkt . Ik heb Revolver een half sterretje meer gegeven , maar verder blijf ik bij mijn mening dat het een zwakker album is in het oeuvre van The Beatles.
December 2014 vroeg een vriend van mij om een top12 van nummers op te stellen. Uit de losse pols was dit toen mijn lijstje:

Dat klopt misschien niet helemaal, maar geeft een beetje een beeld van mijn voorkeuren.

Je voorkeur gaat duidelijk uit naar de vroege Beatles. 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)' is de vreemde eend in de bijt. (maar wel een hele goede)
Toch wel een opvallende keuze vanuit mijn smaak gezien. 3, 4, 5, 10 en 11 vind ik leuk, maar bengelen bij mij ergens onderaan in het oeuvre van The Beatles.

Een mooi lijstje Justus18. Met een paar opvallendheden, hoewel ik begrijp dat het losse polswerk was.

Ten eerste. The Beatles hebben volgens jou na Eleanor Rigby geen enkel nummer meer weten te maken die dat prachtige Revolver nummer wist te verbeteren.

Ten tweede. Ik had Three cool cats in de top 10 verwacht. Bovendien komt er in de nummer 1 Hard day's night ook nog een hond voor en geen poes.

The Beatles hadden wellicht meer met honden dan met katten (Hey Bulldog, Martha my dear). Niet zo vreemd wellicht want Three cool cats is oorspronkelijk van die mislukte Decca-auditie van januari 1962.

We zijn best wel eensgezind deze week. De gehele top 10 heeft meer punten gescoord dan vorige week.

Rectificatie - Alberto Gemerts is een zanger van Surinaamse afkomst. Hij is in januari 2016 op 84-jarige leeftijd overleden.

Heerlijk hippie-nummer met duister randje, de vocalen zijn opperbest en het hummer blijft ook geheid in je hoofd hangen

34. Twice As Much - Sittin' On A Fence
Ken ik meer in de versie van Rolling Stones maar deze doet er nauwelijks voor onder. Wat lieflijker maar het folky tintje en de zonnige sfeer zijn ook hier aanwezig.

39. Alan Price Set - Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo
Een vrolijk en lichtvoetig nummer van Animals-toetsenist en zingen kan hij ook best. Typisch een nummer waarmee je wil opstaan.

Eigenlijk wil ik zo vaak mogelijk mijn top 10 verversen, maar sommige liedjes vind ik zelfs na meer dan twee maanden in mijn top 10 nog steeds beter dan nieuwkomers. De afgelopen maanden zijn er dan ook geweldige klassiekers uitgekomen. Ook mijn huidige top 10 nummers gaan jullie stuk voor stuk terug zien in mijn jaarlijstje.

'The Trip' van Donovan is mij in het verleden nooit zo opgevallen, maar bevalt boven verwachting. Dat geldt overigens voor meer liedjes van Donovan. Zoals het weergaloze 'Turquoise'. Mairzipaintree noemde deze single ook al één van die zwaar onderschatte nummers die de Veronica top 40 niet haalde.

Nu we over de helft van 1966 zijn en ik de meeste releases voor de komende maanden ken vind ik dat dit jaar voor wat betreft 'klassiekers' kan wedijveren met 'topjaar' 1967.
Alleen in de breedte is er m.i. minder kwaliteit uitgebracht..... maar ik loop in mijn enthousiasme op de zaken vooruit. Het lijkt mij beter om dit aan het eind van het jaar nog eens te bezien.

Oh ja, slechts één nieuwkomer deze week. Het nummer 'Walk' van de Amerikaanse band The Pandas is snelle garagerock met een fuzzbox geluid, dat in die jaren steeds populairder werd.
Ook de mondharmonica klinkt lekker.

Veel garagerock die bij mij binnenkomt. Hoogste nieuwe is van The Remains, die eerder al bij 50tracks een hitje scoorden, als ik me niet vergis. Dit was destijds hun laatste single alweer, in 1966 gingen ze uit elkaar.

The Action heb ik opgepikt bij Marzipaintree: een cover van hetzelfde nummer van Maurice & The Radiants dat deze week de top 10 haalt. Deze versie van dit Britse bandje heeft nog meer dan voldoende soul.

The Cave Men komt uit Florida en scoort met een enorm overstuurd garagenummer. Eigenlijk is dit de b-kant van The Pillow Bit,een nummer dat ik online nergens kan vinden, maar wat ik zo lees een ballad is. Wat een contrast met deze bak herrie.

De hoes suggereert een braaf plaatje, maar Adrian Lloyd krijst er behoorlijk op los in Lorna. Lekkere Bo Diddley-beat ook. Wat een energie.
Datzelfde geldt voor The Benders, al schreeuwen zij niet zo.

Dobie Gray scoorde bij mij al wat hits met mooie soulplaten en ook deze valt in dat straatje. Lekkere dansbare soul, echt een plaat voor de zaterdagavond. I'm getting my kicks out on the floor!

Een goede vergelijking is pas mogelijk als we de persoonlijke top 500 van 1966 gaan vergelijken met die van andere jaren. Dat wordt nog wel even selecteren omdat ik bijvoorbeeld mogelijk meer singles nodig heb dan in mijn top 40 hebben gestaan. Maar, inderdaad, dat zien we aan het eind van het jaar wel.

Het is in ieder geval deze week dat zowel the Beatles als the Kinks de langst genoteerden nummers zijn uit mijn lijst en daarmee overtreffen ze elke andere single uit 1966.
The Yardbirds hadden lange tijd deze titel in handen met "The shape of things". Ik heb de afgelopen periode de b-kant "You're a better man than I" daarvan nog veel gedraaid omdat deze uitstekend gecoverd werd door "the Sons of Adam". Maar ik moet bekennen dat het origineel toch sterker is.

De langstgenoteerde singles hebben allemaal buitengewoon sterke b-kanten. The Beatles hebben met Rain ook een uitstekende typering voor het jaar 1966. Want 1966 was een heel nat jaar. Niet alleen het weer, tot en met 13 augustus was 1966 zelfs het natste jaar sinds 1901 in de Bilt met 719 mm en dat record is tot op heden niet verbroken hoewel 2016 wel in de buurt komt. Een vergelijkbare natheid en statistische precisie zien we terug in het tranendal van Question mark met 96 tears.
