Eén van de beste singles die in 1964 verscheen kwam van Eric Burdon en de zijnen. De beatlemania en de british invasion was reeds ingezet, maar met de release van dit nummer kwam de popscene naar mijn mening pas op volle gang. The Animals werden voor hun arrangement van het traditionele 'House Of The Rising Sun' geïnspireerd door de versie die Bob Dylan twee jaar eerder op zijn titelloze debuut zette. De vanaf de eerste tonen al herkenbare single werd een nummer 1 hit en sindsdien is The Animals onlosmakelijk verbonden met dit lied. De opname, naar verluidt in slechts een kwartier gemaakt, had een gigantische invloed op de latere rockmuziek en keert vrijwel altijd terug in lijstjes met de beste pop- of rocksongs aller tijden.

De Supremes braken met 'Where Did Our Love Go' pas echt door en scoorden hiermee in veel landen een nummer 1 hit.

Opvallend dat de nummers langzaam langer worden. Een half jaar geleden duurde mijn top 20 bij elkaar 50 minuten, inmiddels zitten op 57. Nu trekken Tell Me, Girl from Ipanema en House of the Rising Sun het gemiddelde wel omhoog, maar nummers van langer dan 3,5 minuut heb ik in 1963 niet in mijn lijstje gehad, laat staan nummers van 5 minuten.

Volgende week komt de Stones dan met hun versie van It's All Over Now.

Er verschenen natuurlijk wel meer Stones-singles in 1964, maar de cover van Bobby Womacks 'It’s All Over Now' was een bijzondere. Hiermee scoorde de band namelijk zijn eerste nummer 1-hit in Engeland én Nederland. Terecht, want deze cover is er één van de buitencategorie en is naar mijn mening tot op de dag van vandaag één van de allerbeste Stones nummers.

Naar verluidt was Womack zelf niet erg te spreken over de Rolling Stones-versie, maar dat weerhield hem er niet van om twee decennia later een gastbijdrage te leveren aan het album Dirty Work. Van de vele versies die er door de jaren heen van It’s All Over Now zijn gemaakt, blijft die van The Rolling Stones vijftig jaar later de meest succesvolle.

De huidige top 5 zijn stuk voor stuk ijzersterke klassiekers en beschouw ik als het beste wat de jaren zestig tot nu toe hebben voortgebracht. Toch is dit nog maar het begin. De inkt van de teksten van onvergetelijke nummers van The Kinks en The Zombies is nauwelijks droog. Deze bandjes weten het op dat moment nog niet, dat zij mede verantwoordelijk worden voor ongekende vernieuwingen in de popmuziek.

Dat eerste heb ik ook gelezen, maar het schijnt dat hij wel bijdraaide toen de Stones-versie eenmaal een hit werd en de royalties binnenkwamen. Blijkbaar heeft hij toen gezegd dat de Stones wel meer nummers van hem mochten coveren.

Ook een mooie entry voor The Shangri-Las trouwens, die gaat bij mij erg hoog binnenkomen. Waar het kaarsje van de Ronettes langzaam uitdooft, komen zij nu juist op. Ik zie dat ze hiervoor ook nog 2 singles hebben uitgebracht, maar die zijn nergens opgepikt en staan ook niet op hun debuutalbum. Toch maar eens beluisteren.

Een nieuwe nummer met 1 van de beste Girl Group songs allertijden. Ik denk dat deze toch wel in mijn top 5 staat, samen met Nothing But A Heartache, Be My Baby, Will You Love Me Tomorrow en Then He Kissed Me. Grappig weetje: een nog onbekende Billy Joel speelt hier op piano.

The Rolling Stones komen ook binnen met hun versie van It's All Over Now, maar eigenlijk vind ik die van The Valentinos momenteel nog wat beter. Komt ook omdat ik die veel vaker gehoord heb. Irma Thomas scoort ook met een song die later ook nog terugkomt als Stones-cover.

Onderin is er ook nog een plekje voor de soul van The Impressions en een aardig girl group song van de Rev-Lons.

Het niveau gaat trouwens aardig rap omhoog als we elke week 2 binnenkomers van het kaliber van vorige en deze week hebben. Gevoelsmatig is dit mijn sterkste top 10 tot nu toe.

Uitgerekend nu Bobby Womack's 'It's All Over Now' in onze hitlijsten staat, is bekend geworden dat hij is overleden. Hij is 70 jaar geworden. Dat heeft zijn platenlabel bevestigd. De doodsoorzaak van de Amerikaanse zanger is niet bekend.

Hij scoorde verder hits met nummers als Lookin' For A Love, That's The Way I Feel About 'Cha en Woman's Gotta Have It.

Het was bekend dat hij aan ziekte van Alzheimer leed, wellicht heeft dat met zijn dood te maken.

Flinke verversing in de lijst. Ik was op zoek naar Bob Marley-singles uit 1964 en las toen ergens dat in het begin van dit kalenderjaar zijn hit Simmer Down een grote klassieker van de Jamaicaanse nummer 1-positie verdreef: Carry Go Bring Come. Eén van de grootste ska-klassiekers en ook een heel leuk nummers, dus die komt in ieder geval binnen. Bob Marley moet nog even afwachten.

Verder ook de nieuwe singles van The Beatles en The High Numbers. Zoot Suit vond ik wel een lekker nummer en ik vond het wel leuk om te ontdekken dat dit een voorganger van een hele grote band is, namelijk The Who. Zo hebben we toch weer een hele grote 60s band te pakken in dit topic.

Rustig weekje, al verdwijnen er wel twee voormalige nummer 1's. Twee redelijk identieke binnenkomers uit het soulkamp. De singles van Solomon deden me tot nog toe niet zoveel, maar dit nummer is fantastisch. De plaat van Pickett is evenzo lekker energiek. Het nummer van Manfred Mann is wereldberoemd, maar eigenlijk vind ik de originele versie van de Exciters leuker en voelt deze uitvoering een beetje als mosterd na de maaltijd, iets wat ik nu eigenlijk ook heb met de Stones' It's All Over Now.

The Sharades is een Engelse meidenband, geproduceerd door Joe Meek. En dat is te horen, want dit klinkt veel electronischer dan andere girl bands en een stuk spannender dan het brave origineel van Ginny Arnel. Leuk dwars plaatje.

Het nummer van Chuck Berry is mij bekend van Pulp Fiction en had ik ouder ingeschat, maar deze rock 'n' roll is desalniettemin tijdloos. Heerlijk nummer.

Gilbert Becaud's bekende Nathalie vind ik een mooie chanson met een fraaie niet zo voor de hand liggende laatste minuut.

Het nummer van Nina Simone staat erg hoog in de charts van RateYourMusic (ik geloof bij de beste 20 van 1964 zelfs) en dat hoor ik er nog niet aan af, maar wellicht groeit het nummer nog wat de komende tijd. Voor nu een fijne live-plaat in ieder geval.

Ja, ik ben op vakantie en zat onverwachts ruim een week zonder internet. De komende week ben ik er weer.
