De latere covers van Vanilla Fudge en Santana zijn ook zeker niet verkeerd, maar beide kunnen niet op tegen het originele She’s Not There van The Zombies. Toetsenist Rod Argent schreef deze jazzy rocksong, gezongen door de immer herkenbare Colin Blunstone. De single was de allereerste van de Britse band en de enige die in Engeland de top veertig haalde. In de Verendigde Staten volgden nog wel meer hits: Tell Her No (ook uit 1964) en, uiteraard, Time Of The Season (1969).

Deze top 10 is met al z'n klassiekers, er één die velen tot de verbeelding zal spreken. Na het legendarische 'The House of the Rising Sun' met z'n herkenbare orgel- en gitaargeluid en het meesterlijke 'She's Not There' breken The Kinks door met het proto-hard rock nummer 'You Really Got Me'. Deze derde single van The Kinks is één van de belangrijkste opnames uit de rockgeschiedenis. Dave Davies kreeg de gitaarsound van 'You Really Got Me' door zijn versterker te bewerken met een scheermes. De invloed op de latere hard rockbands, waaronder de mannen van Van Halen die een hit scoorden met hun coverversie, was enorm. The Kinks kwamen later in 1964 met nóg een klassieke single: 'All Day And All Of The Night'.

The Beatles scoorden in 1964 de ene hitsingle na de andere. 'And I Love Her/ If I Fell' en 'I Should Have Known Better' werden in de USA uitgebracht en haalden een 12e en een 53e plaats.

Aardige schoonmaak, maar wat wil je ook met 2 binnenkomers van de buitencategorie. Allebei fantastische nummers en al 50 jaar onverwoestbaar. De rest is ook zeker goed, allemaal op hun eigen manier. Het album A Hard Day's Night van de Beatles zit bij mij wel wat in de lift. Sowieso veruit hun beste plaat tot dan toe. Ook hun zoete liedjes als And I Love Her vind ik mooi. Van Jackie Ross had ik nog nooit gehoord, maar dit is een fijne soulplaat. Blijkbaar ook bekend via de serie Mad Men, die ik nog steeds eens uit moet kijken. Mary Wells zingt weer verleidelijk, maar ik moest dit nummer wel een paar keer horen voor het kwartje viel. Uiteindelijk lang niet zo goed als My Guy, maar wel een notering waard. Dean Martin was in 1964 al zowat 50 jaar oud en klonk toen al oubollig, maar toch heb ik er wel een zwak voor.

Wat hebben de singles van The Isley Brothers en Don Convay gemeen? Op beide tracks speelt de piepjonge Jimi Hendrix op gitaar. Het heeft opwindende tracks tot gevolg. Die van The Isley's flopt overigens volkomen (is ook al 2 maanden oud). Voor de puristen: het nummer van Martha Reeves heet Dancing In The Street en niet Streets

Dat vind ik wel mooi en soms grappig op MuMe, dat bloedfanatisme en het oog voor detail en zuivere informatie.
Moet je voor de gein eens beweren dat Black Sabbath de basis is voor Black Metal of dat een bepaalde elpee van Rush wel of niet ProgRock is... of je geeft bijvoorbeeld een amplifieraankoopadvies bij een bepaalde set luidsprekers... dan krijg je wat over je heen.. haha.

Hier wordt over een enkele letter gevallen. Volkomen terecht!

Ja, als ik het niet vergeet pas ik het volgende week aan.

Het interesseert me eigenlijk helemaal niet, maar het lastige van 1 letter verschil is dat een nummer soms niet terug te vinden is. Ik wist zeker dat ik dit nummer had maar mijn lokale iTunes is zo dom het niet terug te kunnen vinden met een S.

Vijf nieuwkomers deze week. Roy Orbison had met 'Oh Pretty Woman' zijn grootste hit en van 'Tobacco Road' zijn veel covers gemaakt, maar de bekendste is toch wel die van The Nashville Teens.
Herman's Hermits muziek werd door kenners niet serieus genomen, maar hun eenvoudige liedjes waren aanstekelijk en dus populair.
The Beatles staan nu dankzij de Amerikaanse single 'I'll Cry Instead' met 4 nummers in deze top 20. De covers 'Roll Over Beethoven' en 'Long Tall Sally', die in Nederland op single werden uitgebracht voegen niet veel toe aan de originele versies en laat ik daarom buiten beschouwing. Het zou anders een wel erg eenzijdige top 20 worden.
Tenslotte maakten Booker T and the MG's de ene na de andere sfeervolle instrumental. Het iets minder bekende 'Soul Dressing' is daar een voorbeeld van.

The Caps was het bandje van Hans van Hemert. Ongelofelijk naive popmuziek, maar misschien daarom wel leuk. Zeker de B-kant. Het is het jaar van de Impressions. Niet hun beste maar in 1964 wist Curtis Mayfield altijd wel een ruime voldoende te halen. Cilla Black scoort al bij de anderen.

A.s zaterdag om 18:00 uur presenteer ik mijn eerste radio uitzending 'It Was 50 Years Ago Today!'
bij RTV Zeewolde. Mijn wekelijkse top 20 van 50 jaar geleden. Muziek uit vervlogen jaren, waar nog steeds een paar mensen geboeid naar luisteren. Ondanks de kleine doelgroep zullen er nog vele uitzendingen volgen.

Is het alleen muziek draaien of ook mooi aan elkaar praten?

Ik denk dat daar zeker een behoefte aan is en er blijken in de praktijk ook best wel jongeren naar te luisteren, als ze het kunnen vinden.
Zou het ook in Almere te ontvangen zijn?

Leuke reacties, mijn radiodebuut stel ik toch maar een weekje uit. Er is toevallig een waarschijnlijk zeer luidruchtig feestje op hetzelfde tijdstip bij de buren, die de wc en bar met onze radio omroep delen.

De bubbling under lijst kent inmiddels zo'n 75 aardige nummers. Veel aardige nummers maar allemaal minder dan de top die het dan ook lang volhoud. En slechts een enkeling blijkt naar een paar keer luisteren 'beter' te worden. De meeste zullen de lijst niet halen, maar Toots is na een paar luisteren onder de huid gaan zitten en onweerstaanbaar leuk geworden.

The V.I.P.S. is aardige Northern Soul waarvan ik alleen denk dat de houdbaarheidstijd niet heel lang zal zijn. The High Number is uiteraard de voorloper van The Who en Don't Start Crying Now is de kennismakingssingle met Van Morrisson. Nog geen absolute top maar hij leert snel, over 3 maanden komt hij met een van de beste singles van 1964.

'So Little Time' is de titel van het nummer. Het is voorzover ik weet het eerste Fuzz tone distortion gitaargeluid geluid sinds Link Wray gaten in zijn luidsprekers prikte en nog voordat The Rolling Stones in 1965 met 'Satisfaction' een soortgelijk gitaargeluid produceerden. Met diezelfde sound wisten Jimi Hendrix en Iron Butterfly pas jaren later de wereld te veroveren, maar actrice en seksbom Diana Dorrs, de Britse Marilyn Monroe, zette dit memorabele nummer al in 1964 neer.

Op Get My Hands On Some Lovin' blazen The Artistics leven in een onopvallende Marvin Gaye track uit 1962. Soms is de cover vele malen beter dan het orgineel. Energieke soul waar je erg blij van wordt.

So Little Time is een mooie tip van heicro.

Lifetime Man / Mr. Lonely Heart is een Motown/V.I.P. release van zangeres Oma Heard waar veel onduidelijkheid over is. Ze heeft onder verschillende namen gezongen. Zo is er een debat onder fans over een aantal tracks van Marvin Gaye met Oma Page. Dit is wel degelijk dezelfde persoon als deze Oma Heard. Ze zong ook nog met bijvoorbeeld Ike & Tina Turner, Phil Spector en Leonard Cohen.
De A-kant van deze single is een soort poging om de britse girlgroepen na te doen inclusief de vele ooo's en yeah's en een nogal aanwezige harmonica. Vrolijke niets aan de hand muziek. Mr. Lonely Heart is een prachtige langzame blues met een soulvolle stem daarover heen en een prima close-harmony groep erachter (The Blossoms).

Tommy Good's Baby I Miss You is lekkere upbeat blue-eyed soul (op Motown).

Dan ook nog maar een track van een van de meesters zelf. Marvin Gaye komt met het goede maar niet al te memorabele Baby Don't You Do It. Lekker om een keer te horen maar zo kennen we er net iets teveel van Marvin om echt te kunnen beklijven.

Johnny Kendall & the Heralds kwamen uit Amsterdam en zijn vooral bekend geworden door de hit 'St. James Infirmary'. De zanger van de groep was Johan Donkerkaat, alias Johnny Kendall. Hij treedt nog steeds af en toe op. Hij werd voor het tv programma 'Derksen on the Road' een dag door Johan Derksen gevolgd.

The Hollies beginnen steeds meer voet aan de grond te krijgen. Hun nummers worden steeds beter en ze scoren hit na hit in Engeland. Hun eerste hit in Nederland ' I m Alive' laat nog even op zich wachten.

Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders zijn meer bekend geworden met 'The Game of Love'. Um Um Um Um werd buiten Engeland nauwelijks bekend.

The Bo Street Runners hebben hun bekendheid voornamelijk te danken aan het feit dat Mick Fleetwood een poosje lid was van de band. Hun single haalde de hitlijsten niet.
