Vorige week had ik geen tijd om de charts van 50 jaar geleden te controleren, maar dat heb ik ingehaald en resulteert in 10 nieuwe entry's. Ik luister natuurlijk wel trouw naar alle nieuwe binnenkomers van de collega's hier.

Nog niet eerder vermeld:
25. Maxine Brown: powersoul naar mijn hart. Een duet met Chuck (I Keep Forgettin') Jackson heeft eerder dit jaar ook al een paar weken in mijn lijst gestaan.
27. Joan Baez: In mijn muziekverzamelwoedeperiode (ik was toen 25 tot 35 jaar) kwam dit niet over, maar via een hele lange omweg komt dit alsnog heel hard binnen op een plekje net na Bob Dylan.
38. BB King: alweer zo'n rare notering. Op NSJF heb ik hem live gezien en wist hij mij niet te overtuigen. Ik vond hem te routineus een kunstje aan het herhalen. Dit nummer klinkt meer authentiek.

Verder heb ik nog veel nummers op de wachtlijst staan. ZZ gun ik even plekje 40, maar die ligt er de volgende week weer uit.

Can't Seem to Make You Mine van The Seeds staat al wekenlang hoog in de Top 10 en is uitgegroeid tot één van de meest favoriete nummers van 1965. The Four Tops met It's The Same Old Song is dé tip voor volgende week.

Dat zal vechten worden met James Brown & The Famous Flames - Papa's Got a Brand New Bag

Zijn eerste Top 10 hit in de Billboard Hot100.

Top-40: week 29 van 1965.

31. The Who - Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere
De eerste hit van The Who, ruig en vitaal met gebruik van feedback, sublieme koortjes en drumwerk. Zeker één van de grootste bands in de 60's.
Cijfer: 8,5

34. Freddy - 5000 Meilen Von Zu Haus' / Adios Mexico
Een cover van 500 Miles From Home (is dat de originele versie?), op zich een mooi nummer maar vind ik veel minder dan de Franstalige versie wegens minder sfeervol en melancholiek. De B-kant vind ik ook te belegen.
Cijfer: 4,5 / 4

35. Gene Pitney - Looking Thru The Eyes Of Love
Een opvallend scherpe stem maar ook met veel gevoel gezongen. Een Phil Spectioriaanse productie dat verhoogt het drama-gevoel verhoogt.
Cijfer: 7,5

37. Jay & The Americans - Cara Mia
Werd vreemd genoeg een veel grotere hit in de zomer van 1980 (die net als die van 1965 erg slecht was). Vocaal niet te versmaden en het blijft een aanstekelijk en zomers nummer.
Cijfer: 8,5

Blijkbaar is het origineel nog iets ouder. Volgens Wikipedia is het deze uit 1961:

Een paar quotes uit een mooi artikel:

"The song hit shelves on July 20th, just days before the Newport Folk Festival where Dylan played the song live as part of his first-ever electric set, which is a well-worn story that's been the subject of entire books."

"Columbia didn't have high hopes for "Like a Rolling Stone" since it was six minutes long and so unlike Dylan's previous work, but it became the single biggest hit of his career. It upset a lot of traditional folkies in the process, but it turned Dylan into a rock star at the exact moment that the folk music scene was fading. He ended every single show on his legendary 1965/66 world tour with the Hawks with the song, and he's now done it a total of 2,024 times, second only to "All Along the Watchtower."


Paul Simon debuteert bij deze in dit topic. Simon & Garfunkel waren samen al een tijdje actief, maar scoren pas in de herfst van 1965 hun eerste wereldhit (nota bene met dezelfde muzikanten van Like A Rolling Stone) met misschien wel hun bekendste nummer. Maar eerst is er nog een single van Paul alleen, die in augustus 1965 een album uitbrengt waarvan de meeste liedjes nog op S&G-albums zullen verschijnen. I Am A Rock vind ik erg sterk.

The Beatles komen verder ook binnen met Help!, dat een leuk liedje is, al is de magie en het oosterse accent van Ticket to Ride ver te zoeken.

Top-40: week 30 van 1965.

21. Roy Orbison - (Say) You're My Girl
Een minder bekende Orbison-song maar één van zijn beste vind ik. Roy Orbison zingt hier buitengewoon goed, erg pakkende melodie, efficiënte vrouwenkoor, heerlijk ritme en dat pianostuk in het midden.
Cijfer: 9

29. The Searchers - I Don't Want To Go On Without You
Romantische song met prachtige charmante stemmen en passende net niet stroperige violen die de sfeer nog verhogen.
Cijfer: 7,5

35. Vic Dana - Bring A Little Sunshine (To My Heart)
Dit past ook op de late avond maar is een stuk oubolliger en sentimenteler al kan Vic Dana zeker behoorlijk zingen.
Cijfer: 5

36. The Pretty Things - Cry To Me
Werd eerder door Solomon Burke opgenomen (ik denk dat dit de originele versie is). Zeker een goede cover maar tegen de soul van Solomon Burke kunnen ze niet op.
Cijfer: 7,5

39. Johnny Lion - Sophietje
Tot nu toe de beste Nederlandstalige hit dit jaar door de onvergetelijke tekst en leuk ritme en dat opvallend orgeltje. Heeft ook de tand des tijds goed doorstaan.

40. The Scorpions - Greensleeves
Een nummer dat ik niet kende, valt best mee door die Shadows-achtige gitaar. Simpel en kort nummer maar energiek en vitaal.

Het Amerikaanse muziekblad Rolling Stone liet in totaal 172 zangers, muzikanten, producers en andere invloedrijke mensen uit de muziekindustrie een top 50 maken van hun favoriete songs.
Like a Rolling Stone van Bob Dylan, dat in 1965 door de destijds 24-jarige Bob Dylan werd opgenomen is uitgeroepen tot de beste popsong ooit. Hier kun je over twisten, maar een sterk nummer is het zeker.
Zoals zo vaak bij Bob Dylan is er geen origineel you tube filmpje van de studio opname en dat is jammer. Aan de andere kant, wie dit nummer niet kent komt van een andere planeet.
Paul Simon solo klinkt op I Am A Rock minder dan de uitvoering die hij later met Art Garfunkel opnam, maar het nummer is fantastisch.
De instrumentale jazzy versie van The In Crowd door Ramsey Lewis vind ik daarentegen beter dan de originele versie van Dobie Gray.
Ik had mijn lijst al klaar, dus nog even geen Beatles. Volgende week stormen ze meteen de top 10 binnen.

Naast de bekende binnenkomers van Beatles, Dylan en Simon vier acts die ik alleen maar heb leren kennen door allerlei Nuggets en Rumble verzamelalbums met rare en obsecure tracks. Vaak is de B kant dan nog leuker dan de A-kant.

Almost Persuaded is geschreven door Dan Penn en een aardige soul single van June Conquest.

The Poets zijn een Schotse band met Andrew Loog Oldham als manager (The Who en Stones). Ze maken een paar erg leuk singles. De vorige haalde zelfs mijn Top 10. Dat zal deze niet lukken, wel de moeite waard.

The Vejtables komen uit San Franscico en dat is te horen, vooral de psychedelische B-kant (Anything) vind ik erg leuk!

Baas boven baas is The Game. Heerlijke mod/beat uit de VS. Uit de YouTube onderschriften begrijp ik dat de jongens hier pas 14/16 jaar zijn. Zowel But I Do als Gotta Keep On Moving Baby hadden ook zomaar een stuk groter kunnen worden.

De echte bazen komen nog steeds uit Liverpool. Als ze al niet de beste songs hadden is het ook nog het beste gebracht en worden ze het beste geproduceerd. Als je alle 40 nummers zo op een rij hoort hadden ze op dat gebied toch nauwelijks competitie.

Een geweldige nieuwe nummer 1 en een binnerkomer die door velen wordt gezien als een mijlpaal in de historie van de popmuziek. Bob Dylan was in die jaren een voorbeeld voor vele muzikanten.
The vrij onbekende The Seeds handhaven zich maar mooi tussen al die beroemde namen.

De releasedates bij Franse pop vind ik altijd wel lastig met al die rereleases in andere landen dan Frankrijk en het feit dat veel nummers op EP'tjes ipv singles werden uitgebracht. Mon Amie La Rose kwam blijkbaar in 1964 al op een EP uit, maar in 1965 op single in Nederland. Ik neem hem toch maar mee, want het is wel een erg fraai ingetogen liedje van Francoise.

The Temptations scoren met een mooi Motown-liedje. Van The Termites en Mimi and Richard Farina had ik tot voor kort nog nooit gehoord, maar beide nummers zijn erg de moeite waard.

Dit duo is ook uit Liverpool afkomstig en brengt een song van Phil Spector, de productie zou ook van hem kunnen zijn. Toch ietsje te overgeorkestreerd naar mijn zin.

38. Dave Berry - This Strange Effect
Een Ray Davis-compositie en met recht en reden een klassieker. De mistroostige zang van Dave Berry past er perfect bij.

39. The Ivy League - Tossing And Turning
Van deze band ken ik enkel dit nummer waarbij de intro nog het meeste opvalt. Verder een aardig nummer door de prima vocalen maar wat te gewoontjes.

Ray Davies werd in de vroege ochtenduren wakker tijdens een tussenstop van een Aziatische toer in Mumbai en hoorde Indische vissers zingen. Hij raakte helemaal geobsedeerd door de oosterse sfeer en besloot in dezelfde stijl een nummer te componeren. Het resultaat is een liedje dat nu beschouwt wordt als de eerste succesvolle poging om Indiase raga in een popsong te samen te laten gaan. See My Friend kwam enkele maanden voordat The Beatles met Norwegian Wood kwamen.
