Make It Easy On Yourself is een geweldige ontdekking voor mij. Waarschijnlijk heb ik het nummer wel eens gehoord, maar het voelt alsof ik het nu leer kennen. Hun vorige single 'Love Her' vond ik niet zo, maar deze is raak. Heerlijk dramatisch, mooie stemmen en ook gewoon een heel goed liedje van Bacharach/David. Dat debuutalbum staat vol met soulcovers en ga ik binnenkort maar eens beluisteren.

The Small Faces scoren met hun debuutsingle. Heerlijk nummer ook en de eerste noten zijn later slim gejat door de Dolly Dots, die er trouwens ook een geweldig nummer van maakten.

The Hollies scoren al jaren hits inmiddels, maar bij haalden ze al ruim een jaar mijn lijst niet meer. Deze is wel weer erg leuk, met name door het catchy refrein.

Top-40: week 32 van 1965.

28. The Yardbirds - Heart full Of Soul
Dit vind ik het beste nummer van The Yardbirds door de melodie en de aparte riff, dit nummer lijkt een voorbode van de komende psychedelica.
Cijfer: 9,5

36. Willeke Alberti - Talisman
Minder leuk dan bv. Mijn Dagboek, het is wat overorkestreerd en daardoor wat gedateerd, het spreekt mij in het geheel ook minder aan.
Cijfer: 5

37. Elvis Presley - (Such An) Easy Question
Dateert van 1962 (staat op zijn album Pot Luck), blijkbaar heruitgebracht om zijn tanende platenverkoop op te krikken. Relaxte, wat lome blues met lichte countrysfeer. Uitstekende zang en backing vocals.

38. Guess Who? - Shakin' All Over
Oospronkelijk van Johnny Kid & the Pirates (1960), deze live-versie is een tikkeltje wilder maar voegt uiteindelijk niet zo veel toe aan het origineel.

Aardige ontdekking van We Five en aardige singles van Impressions en Drifters maar die hebben beide ook spraakmakendere singles gemaakt dit jaar.

Een weinig opzienbarend weekje met The Miracles als hoogste binnenkomer. Ze stonden al weken op een tiplijstje, maar wisten tot vandaag niet de top40 te halen. Nieuw zijn The Honeycombs met de opvolger van Something Better Beginning. That's The Way spreekt mij meer aan.
Wel opmerkelijk is dat het podium volledig uit vrouwelijke artiesten bestaat.

The Nightcrawlers' The Little Black Egg is een rustig garagerocknummer met een jangle pop-achtige tegendraads gitaarloopje dat het hele nummer doorgaat en een stem die op een prettige manier een beetje valsig is.

The Sorrows zijn ook een ontdekking: intense garagerock met Don Fardon (bekend van I'm Alive, iig bij 50tracks dacht ik). Best een stevig nummer met een goede spanningsboog.

Mooie achtergrondinformatie bij The Kinks van heicro. Hiermee waren ze The Beatles (Norwegian Wood) inderdaad te snel af. En het blijft me verbazen wat een geweldige variatie er in de eerste Kinks-singles zit, voor mij toch wel een van de ultieme 60s bands eigenlijk.

The Sonics blijven bij mij ook hun hitjes scoren: altijd hetzelfde geluid, maar het blijft wel lekker. Leuk ook de piano en saxofoons erin. En de handclaps doen me alvast een beetje aan The Stooges (No Fun) denken.

4. The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
Het meest bekende en gedraaide Stones-nummer, blijft onverwoestbaar door de energie, de riff, de vitaliteit en de tekst.

17. The Fortunes - You've Got Your Troubles
Ook vaak gehoord en tijdloos, prachtige close-harmonyzang in combinatie met blazers, hun beste nummer wat mij betreft.

25. The Searchers - He's Got No Love
Dit nummer hoor je vrijwel niet meer maar ik vind dat net het beste Searchers-nummer. Heerlijk, die ijle samenzang, het gitaargeluid, de mysterieuze sfeer (het lijkt wel pré-psychedelica) en de drums. Herwaardering voor dit nummer a.u.b.!

33. The Everly Brothers - I'll Never Get Over You
Ook deze late Everlys-hit zullen weinigen nog kennen maar hun magische samenzang is hier weer in volle schoonheid te horen. Leuke mondharmonica ook.

De ontwikkeling van de popmuziek in 1965 was grotendeels een voortzetting van 1964. De Motown sound en de Britse invasie bandjes domineerden de hitlijsten. Maar met de komst van Bob Dylan, Donovan en Barry McGuire deed de protestsong zijn intreden. Zij zongen maatschappij kritische nummers, waarin de wereld en in het bijzonder de Verenigde Staten werd afgeschilderd als een wereld waar de hypocrisie overheerste met als gevolg dat de samenleving op het punt stond zichzelf te vernietiging als de wereld niet snel veranderde.
Het jaar 1965 was op muzikaal gebied vooruitstrevend, maar met name Amerika was nog conservatief en ook rascistisch. Er waren protesten tegen de oorlog in Vietnam en gewelddadige rassenrellen. Het protestlied Eve Of Destruction van Barry McGuire haalde 50 jaar geleden, ondanks een boycot door veel radiostations, de nummer 1 positie in de Billboard Hot 100.

John Lennon vond You've Got o Hide Your Love Away niet commercieel genoeg voor een single, maar dankzij een Franse EP release zien wij het nummer 50 jaar later toch in mijn lijstje. Track A1: You've Got o Hide Your Love Away, A2: Yesterday, B1: Dizzy Miss Lizzy en B2: You Like Me Too Much.

Een beetje cabaretesk liedje, ik vind het wel grappig. In ieder geval krachtig gezongen met zijn unieke stem en tijdloos.

33. Max en Betsy Anders - Zwaluw, Ach Zwaluw
Tijdloos, dat kan ik niet over dit nummer zeggen. Het probeert origineel en artistiek over te komen maar uiteindelijk klinkt het melig en zelfs wat knullig.

35. Sam The Sham and The Pharaohs - Ju Ju Hand
Gewoon een kopie van Wooly Bully en dus minder leuk en verrassend dan hun eerste hit. In de jaren '90 zou je daarmee een vrijwel evengrote hit scoren, in de jaren '60 pikte het publiek dat minder gezien de lage hitnotering.

Nooit geweten dat 'Love is Strange' door Bo Diddley is geschreven. The Everly Brothers maakten er een uitstekende uitvoering van. Datzelfde geldt voor Barry McGuire die van 'Eve of Destruction' van P.F. Sloan een klassieker maakte. De schrijver zelf bracht een lang niet zo dramatische 'The Sins of a Family' op single uit. (It Won't Hurt) Half as Much is wat minder dan we gewend zijn, maar dat gaat Them met 'Mystic Eyes' over een paar maanden goed maken.

13: Evie Sands, de favoriete zangeres van Dusty Springfield, had niet veel geluk in haar carriere. Van 'Take Me For A Little While' werd een testpersing gestolen en een cover opgenomen en uitgebracht, nog voordat de originele versie op de markt kwam. Die werd dus geen hit, de eerder uitgebrachte cover van Jackie Ross wel. Een jaar later waren het dan weer The Hollies die een grote hit scoorden met een nummer van Evie. Pas eind jaren '60 zou zij wat meer erkenning krijgen. Dit vind ik zelf in ieder geval wel een lekker nummer. Blijkbaar was het vrij geliefd in northern soul kringen.

19: De stem van Nico is kenmerkend, ik houd er wel van. Het liedje zelf vind ik okay, maar niet super.

Top-40: week 35 van 1965.

17. The Animals - We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place
Opgebouwd op een geweldige baslijn met functionele orgel die voor spanning zorgt en tenslotte de gedreven zang en meezingrefrein, zo mogen alle top-40 hits klinken.

18. Bob Dylan - Like A Rolling Stone
De originele clip vind ik niet op YouTube maar iedereen kent het nummer wel. Dit blijf ik één van zijn beste nummers vinden door de voordracht en de tekst.

21. Sonny & Cher - I Got You Babe
Dit duo zullen wij ook nog regelmatig in de top-40 tegenkomen. Hun eerste hit is al een schot in de roos met prima zang (vooral van Cher), productie en opbouw, het heeft ook een beetje een hippiesfeer.

23. The Byrds / Cher - All I Really Want To Do
Voor The Byrds heb ik altijd een zwak gehad vanwege hun samenzang en gitaarsound, dit is een heerlijk nummer. De versie van Cher vind ik ook prima mede dankzij de productie en natuurlijk de zang.

32. The Kinks - See My Friend
De 5e keer dat wij The Kinks dit jaar tegenkomen, ze waren haast even populair als The Beatles en Rolling Stones. En terecht, dit is wederom een prachtsong met een beetje mystiek en subliem gitaarwerk.

35. Herman's Hermits - I'm Henry The Eighth I Am
Misschien wat knullig maar ook erg grappig en dat gitaartje is ook erg leuk evenals het ritme en het erg Brits accent dat prima bij de tekst past.

38. The Dave Clark Five - Catch Us If You Can
Erg catchy en levenslustig, wie hier niet vrolijk van wordt moet wel erg depressief zijn. Vooral het drumwerk en de mondharmonica vallen in positieve zin op.

40. Cliff Richard - Angel
Deze man heeft beslist ook zijn verdiensten in de popmuziek, hij weet hier zowaar een opgewekte versie te maken van een droevig nummer van Elvis (die versie vind ik wel beter). Die handclaps en vrouwenkoor fleuren het nummer op.

23. The Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody
Wat konden ze toen prachtig zingen, dit is op en top klasse. Geen misplaatste vocale acrobatiek maar met veel passie en gevoel. Nadien vaak gecoverd maar deze versie blijft onovertroffen ook al door de prima productie van Phil Spector die het nummer van een gedoseerde bombast voorziet.

33. Donovan - Universal Soldier
Het Britse antwoord op Bob Dylan, maar hiermee steekt hij zijn inspirator naar de kroon door zijn voordracht en universele tekst.

35. Manfred Mann - The One In The Middle
Niet meteen de grootste band uit de 60's maar wel heel wat leuke hits. Een beetje bluesgetint met prominente rol voor de orgel.
Cijfer: 7

36. The Honeycombs - That's The Way
Deze band ken ik van Have I the Right, dit klinkt een stuk braver en zoeter maar slecht is het zeker niet, het heeft nog een zekere charme.
Cijfer: 6

38. Het Cocktail Trio - Wie Heeft De Sleutel Van De Juke-Box Gezien?
Klinkt ook wat gedateerd maar best grappig en gezellig, dit krijgt van mij ook een voldoende.
