Veel gitaarbandjes deze keer die nieuw binnenkomen. Yo La Tengo kende ik destijds nog niet, maar hun 1997-album zou zo maar mijn meest gedraaide 1997-album anno 2022 kunnen zijn. Hele fijne band dit. Maar wel meer een albumband, losse singles vind ik minder. Al is Autumn Sweater mooi genoeg om de andere nieuwe binnenkomers af te troeven.

Local H kende ik toen ook niet, al had ik vast wel kunnen waarderen. Ze bestaan al sinds 1987 zie ik, dus misschien wat oneerbiedig om ze af te doen als Nirvana-kloon. Maar Nevermind-era Nirvana is wel waar me dit aan doet denken. Lekker bakje melodieus lawaai, hoe dan ook.

Stereophonics kan ik altijd wel waarderen door de Rod Stewart-achtige strot van de zanger. En ze hadden ook een reeks prima singles, waarvan dit denk ik de eerste is die een hit wordt.

60 Ft Dolls komt net als Stereophonics uit Wales zie ik. Dit is meer power pop, beetje Posies hoor ik er wel in. Volgens RYM al uit 1996, maar toen wilde 'ie niet helemaal landen. Dus nu maar in de herkansing.

Natural Born Deejays is de vreemde eend in de bijt: een Duitse tranceplaat met een samples uit de film Flatliners, die toen aardig populair was volgens mij. De titel klinkt opgewekt, maar als je weet dat de volledige tekst 'Today Is A Good Day to Die' luidt dan is er toch wel iets meer aan de hand. Sterke plaat en in België hadden ze dat in de gaten: daar werd dit een top 3-hit, in Nederland was er geen chartsucces zie ik.

De hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer heeft een actueel thema: de waarheid niet willen geloven omdat leugens comfortabeler zijn. Dus liever naar de zon staren, zodat je niet ziet wat er echt gebeurt. Ik besef mij dat de ‘waarheid’ als term gekaapt is door mensen die liever de leugens geloven, dus voor de zekerheid: ik bedoel de waarheid in de originele betekenis, dus niet zoiets als hagedissen die verkleed zijn als mensen die al babybloeddrinkend stiekem de wereld runnen met allerlei gecompliceerde complotten. In dit nummer wordt ook gerefereerd aan de albumtitel ‘Stuck Together With God’s Glue’, van een andere Ierse band: Something Happens.

14 | depeche mode - it's no good
Depeche Mode is terug met een nummer dat klinkt als de oude Depeche Mode. Het nummer werd bijna geschrapt omdat ze het te commercieel vonden klinken, maar gelukkig hebben ze zich laten overtuigen. Dat overtuigen kwam door één persoon: een Australische dame die een tijdje de assistent was van de manager van de band. Zij overtuigde Martin Gore ervan dat het een goed nummer is.

Ik ben als cd koper nog nooit zo erg beledigd, ook niet bij slechte recensies van een favoriete band, als bij de aankoop van het album Middle of Nowhere van Hanson.

Dat ging destijds als volgt. Ik had jonge kinderen en vond een gedegen rockmuziek opleiding van belang. Interesse kweken voordat K3 om de hoek kwam kijken. En dus kon je daar niet vroeg genoeg mee beginnen. Maar om ze nu op te zadelen met die oude belegen rockers van mezelf.

Dus toen MMMbop van Hanson uitkwam, en een bijbehorende cd van de jongens van 11,14 en 16 was ik gelijk te porren voor aanschaf. Recenseren voor musicmeter kon toen nog niet, maar ik vond het een verrassend sterke en opbeurende cd, met een lekker tempo, catchy songs en frontman/zanger Taylor Hanson (14) die klonk alsof hij al jaren over het podium heerste. MMMbop was overigens nog verre van het aardigste nummer van het album.

Ik schotelde de cd voor, daar was het voor gekocht. Maar kinderen ontwikkelen toch een eigen smaak, hadden meer oog voor het nieuwe van een gameboy en het eerste pokemonspel en ik liet het voor even gaan. Zelf vond ik het helemaal niet erg om Middle of Nowhere met enige regelmaat op te zetten.

Toen gebeurde het. Er kwam een recensie van het album en de recensent noteerde: als je dit goed vind ben je of onder de twaalf of een pedofiel.
Ik was nog nooit zo beledigd maar schrok daarbij dermate dat ik het album opborg om het jaren niet meer uit de kast te durven halen.

Wat kan een mens zich eigenlijk op de kast laten jagen, om niks. Jaren later haalde ik het toch weer tevoorschijn. Ik kwam dat tweede en derde album tegen in de uitverkoopbakken. Hoe zal het eigenlijk met ze gaan, in de ontwikkeling dacht ik bij aanschaf nog.

Het was geen verbetering. Het oude enthousiasme bij de band leek op jonge leeftijd al vervlogen. Ik geloof dat het nu ook al helemaal niks meer is, met Hanson. Taylor Hanson heeft zelf zes kinderen heb ik gehoord.
Wat zou hij in Godsnaam zijn eigen kinderen voorzetten.

Het jazzy Feeling good bereikt zelfs de eerste plaats in mijn lijst; mede hierdoor zal ook geen andere versie meer van deze song nog mijn lijst halen.

Op 23 komt The Source featuring Candi Staton binnen met You got the love, in een remixversie die ook de NL top 40 haalde. In 1991 haalde een eerdere versie wel de onderste regionen van mijn top 40, en ook de NL tipparade, maar deze deed het (ik weet eigenlijk niet waarom) nog een stuk beter. Het origineel van Candi Staton zelf komt overigens uit 1986. En ik lees ook nog dat een nog latere bewerking van New Voyager (uit kringen van The Source) in de NL top 40 de achtste positie haalde... Hoe dit ook zij, de soulfulle stem van Candi maakt dit liedje erg fijn en overtuigend.

Madonna haalt met haar singles veel vaker niet dan wel mijn top 40, maar met het vrij onbekende Another suitcase in another hall lukte het toch wel. Tot mijn verbazing heeft deze zelfs de NL tipparade niet eens gehaald. Het is de opvolger van Don't cry for me Argentina (uit Evita) en spreekt me vooral aan door de (mannelijke) tegenkoortjes die Madonna antwoord geven.

Op 34 een heel apart plaatje van Smoke City, een Britse triphopband met een Braziliaanse zangeres, wat duidelijk in Underwater love terug te horen is door de Portugese teksten en de bossanovaklanken (ook gesampled) die het nummer kenmerken. Het is behoorlijk bekend geworden door een Levi's reclame. Het is ook wel een het enige hitwapenfeit van deze band.

Op 37 Depeche Mode met It's no good, een vrij standaard song met eenvoudig refrein, maar natuurlijk wel met donkere teksten en duistere geluidjes. De band haalt nog wel de NL tipparade, maar top 40 hits zitten er niet meer in (behalve de Enjoy the silence-remix).

week 16 voor 1996 waarin de top 3 blijft staan maar wel wat flinke stijgers in de lijst en wat binnenkomers die vast ook hoge ogen gaan gooien. 5 nieuwe.
Hoogste is voor Blur waarmee ze eigenlijk echt afstand name van het britpop geluid, het klinkt juist meer zoals de muziek waar de britpop een reactie op was. Er kon in elk geval goed op gesprongen worden (en nog steeds)
Texas komt ook weer met een nieuwe, weer een degelijk nummer dat weer wat verder bij hun oorspronkelijke roots geluid vandaan gaat met strijkers, maar de zang en basloopjes blijven toch onmiskenbaar Texas.
Deadstar is een alt rock band uit Aystralie, qua geluid niet ver af van bands als Letters to Cleo en Eve's Plum, of Halo Friendlies helemaal goed dus.
Dub War heb ik uit de lijst van ranboy, vorig jaar hebben ze overigens al met een andere inm'n lijst gestaan.Ze vissen in dezelfde vijver als Audioweb en eigenlijk ook Senser, de gitaren staan wel wat harder dan bij Audioweb.
Disco Pistol ken ik dan nog maar een week, klinkt als Bis meets Kenickie en door de ramones referenties ('play it on the radio') is ook Helen Love niet ver weg. Mooie ontdekking.

nieuw:
- Rialto had ik destijds vooral op de radar via Monday Morning 5:19, wat toch wel een beetje een britpopklassiekertje is geworden. Maar ik denk dat ik deze debuutsingle zeker zo leuk vind. Beetje theatrale sound, een productie die wel wat weg heeft van John Barry's 60's soundtracks en een sterk refrein en goede zang. Echt groot werd Rialto niet, het succes was ook kortstondig. Maar met de zanger hoeven we geen medelijden te hebben, want die is van adel en zodoende erfgenaam van een landgoed en gigantische lap grond in Cornwall.
- Rammstein's Engel hoorde ik vorig weekend nog over een terras in Duitsland schallen. Misschien wel hun bekendste nummer? In ieder geval een geweldige plaat waarvan ik me verbaas dat ie alweer 25 jaar oud is.
- The Wannadies' Hit was destijds mijn kennismaking met de band, Kink FM draaide dit grijs. Pas bijna 25 jaar later kwam ik erachter dat deze band te boek staat als one-hit-wonder via een ander nummer... Hoe dan ook, heerlijke compacte indiepopplaat dit met leuke zang en goede gitaarexplosies. Voor mij destijds ook de reden Bagsy Me in huis te halen, voor mij uiteindelijk een van de albums van de zomer van '97.
- Chemical Brothers blijft gaaf, zal wel even duren voor er een single mijn lijst niet haalt. Deze heeft wel een fijne hiphopvibe op de een of andere manier en die overstuurde synthesizers zijn ook wel lekker.
- The Soundlovers zei me niet zoveel, maar dit is wel een lekker commerciële danceplaat met een mysterieus tintje. Ik zie dat ze binnnenkort met een andere plaat de 13e plek halen in de top 40, dus die heb ik alvast maar aan mijn tips toegevoegd.
- Souvlaki zei me niet zoveel, op basis van de titel dacht ik dat deze band misschien uit Slowdive-fans bestond. Maar muzikaal zit dit meer in de hoek van Fatboy Slim's remix van Wildchild's Renegade Master.
- Catherine is een Amerikaanse gitaarband die duidelijk is geïnspireerd op de Smashing Pumpkins' sound ten tijde van Gish, wat niet vreemd is, aangezien de toenmalige man van Pumpkins' bassiste D'Arcy Gretzky in deze band zit. Qua zang hoor ik er ook wel wat Perry Farrell in overigens. Tot nu toe vond ik deze band niet boven de middelmaat uitkomen, maar nu is het dan eindelijk gelukt.

Ambersunshower "runt" naar de nummer 1 positie, verder vallen de drum n bass gerelateerde tracks over elkaar heen in de hogere regionen.
Het thema voor de new entries is Chart hits deze week, geen tijd gehad voor spitwerk.
Dus bekende hits van The Braxtons en Blackstreet, een frisse single van David Bowie, toegankelijke clubhouse van DJ Jean & Peran en een volgende single van Suede, dat de Govinda wordt voor Suede bij mij ben ik bang (Kula Shaker haalde steeds hoge noteringen voor en na Govinda die bij mij erg achterbleef).

De nieuwe platen in de top 20:

11 | blur - song 2
Een nummer dat bedoeld was om de platenmaatschappij te pesten. Maar de platenmaatschappij was tot hun eigen verbazing enthousiast. Niet voor niets natuurlijk, want het werd één van Blur’s bekendste nummers. Het was zelfs onderdeel van de openingsceremonie van de Olympische Spelen van 2012 (die overigens, net als de sluitingsceremonie, de beste ooit waren door de lange rij Britse hits die voorbij kwamen – mijn favoriete moment was natuurlijk toen de Pet Shop Boys langs kwamen in de sluitingsceremonie, meteen na weer een nummer van Blur: Park Life).

12 | suede – lazy
De vierde single van Coming Up gaat over mensen die te gemakzuchtig zijn om wat te doen aan de problemen die er zijn. Dat is inclusief Suede, want “You and me so lazy”.

18 | david bowie - dead man walking
In de jaren ’60 gaf Jimmy Page van Led Zeppelin een gitaarrif aan David Bowie, die hij van hem mocht gebruiken. Dat deed David Bowie ook in het nummer The Superman in 1970. Nu gebruikt hij dezelfde riff voor een tweede keer. Dit nummer begon overigens als een ode aan Susan Sarandon, die in 1995 een Oscar won voor de film Dead Man Walking.

Dit nummer gaat over de zelfmoord van een jongen die zanger Kelly Jones kende. De foto die van hem verscheen in de lokale krant was het moment dat ze er van hoorden. Kelly Jones was 18 toen hij het nummer schreef en het nummer groeide uit tot één van de favorieten van de fans van de Stereophonics. Blijkbaar heeft het op iedere setlist gestaan van ieder concert dat de Stereophonics gegeven heeft. In 2010 overleed de voormalige drummer van de Stereophonics (Stuart Cable, op deze hit nog wel de drummer) en toen was het ook dit nummer waar actie voor werd gevoerd door de fans om het naar nummer 1 te krijgen. Dat haalde het nummer toen overigens niet.

op 19 komen The Seahorses binnen, ze scoorden met dit nummer een hele dikke hit in Engeland en ook nog wel in sommige landen daarbuiten. In Nederland deed het in ieder geval helemaal niets en ik kan me niet heugen dat iemand daar ook ooit aandacht aan heeft besteed. Het nummer is hun debuutsingle en geschreven door ex-Stone Roses lid John Squire en geproduceerd door Tony Visconti, je zou toch voor minder... Het succes zakte na een paar singles en het debuutalbum snel weg en de band was bijna weer net zo snel weg als dat het opkwam en ging weer uit elkaar.

Het blijft druk en de prima nieuwe binnenkomers fungeren haast een beetje als tip. Omdat ze nog niet over de rest van de top 30 heen kunnen.

Maar de nieuwe van de Foo Fighters is natuurlijk om door een ringetje te halen. Maar dat geldt voor Jamiroquai uiteraard ook. De nieuwe van Gene doet me overigens denken aan Prefab Sprout. Maar dat geeft niet, als het leuk is.

Bij Mansun ging opeens Taxman van de Beatles door mij heen. Hoe ik daar toch opeens weer aan kwam...

Nu moeten ze allemaal de komende week gisten en rijpen en dan zien we volgende week wel weer, hoe dit gaat allemaal gaat stijgen in de lijst. Wie er moeten wijken.

week 17 voor 1997 waarin Republica stand houdt, maar dat moet bijna wel voor de laatste week zijn, dat terwijl ze net deze week in de top 40 binnenkomen. Twee binnenkomers in de top 10 waarvan 1 oude bekende en nog twee binnenkomers bij de onderste 10.
The Wannadies met hun hitsingle, eh, single Hit. Ik twijfel of ik de You and Me Song destijds al kende of dat dit m'n eerste kennismaking was met de band. In elk geval een heerlijke brok energie, past perfect bij de 'huidige' singles van Blur en Supergrass.
No Doubt komt na het succes van kerstsingle Don't Speak (die overigens nog s teeds in de top 40 staat zag ik net) met een heruitgave van Just a Girl en wordt meteen maar alarmschijf. Ook terug in mijn lijst dus; ik ga niet doortellen maar anders zou het week 15 zijn. Of het ook dit jaar weer plaats 1 bereikt betwijfel ik gezien de concurrentie.
Melys kende ik in 1997 nog niet, pas jaren later ontdekt. Cuckoo is niet bepaald representatief al hebben ze wel meer nummers die meer electro dan gitaar gedreven zijn.
Ook Within Temptation leerde ik pas veel later kennen, wel met hun eerste album waarop de gitarist nog af en toe meegromt. Voor de single kozen ze toch een nummer waarop hij niet te horen is, wel zo verstandig denk ik. Bij het 2e album was ik overigens vrij snel op de band uitgekeken (of geluisterd)

Bovenin zit het redelijk vast.

De hoogste nieuwe is toch zomaar weer een hardcore klassieker waar ik zo nu en toch voor viel. In het geval van Flamman & Abraxas kwam het niet zozeer door de stevige beats, als wel door de aparte, wat obsessieve tekst. Ook nu klinkt het nog sterk, al zal je het het niet te vaak moeten beluisteren.

Op 30 vinden we de klassieker van Blur, Song 2, waarop ze extra stevig uit de hoek komen met veel woo-hoo-geschreeuw. Eigenlijk niet het Blur dat ik het liefst hoor, maar deze gaat toch behoorlijk scoren in mijn lijst. Ondanks de grote bekendheid en hitgevoeligheid bleef dit in Nederland gewoon weer in de tipparade steken...

Op 32 ook wel een soort klassieker, Rockblocking beats van The Chemical Brothers, hun tweede notering bij mij. Zoals de titel al suggereert: stevige beats, vergezeld van de nodige toegevoegde samples, synthgeluiden en wat bas en gitaar. Ondanks de vette sound vind ik het niet echt een song, en blijft het meer bij een sfeer.

Op 34 The Soundlovers, volgens Wiki een groep van Italiaanse producenten, met zang van de Belgische Nathalie Aarts en de Argentijnse German Leguizamon. En om geen detail over te slaan: Nathalie Aarts zou later de Nederlandstalige versie van Kuikentje Piep inzingen. Soundlovers wordt een houseproject genoemd, maar Run away klinkt behoorlijk mainstream pop, best aanstekelijk door de achtergrondzang. Het succes zou wel bij deze ene single blijven, al ging de band nog jaren door.

Op 37 de Drentse Erikah Karst met haar doorbraaksingle My heart goes out to you, een overzichtelijk opgebouwde ballad, muzikaal prettig in het gehoor liggend, maar de zang vind ik nu wat minder fijn.

Nog even geduld mensen, want volgende week komen ook bij mij eindelijk Monaco met What do you want from me en Hush van Kula Shaker binnen! .

Ik dacht dat je een typefout had gemaakt maar je bent wel consequent, rockblocking klinkt prima maar het is toch eigenlijk blockrocking

In mijn schrift staat Rockblocking, in mijn Exceloverzicht van alle topnoteringen staat ook Rockblocking, in Youtube heb ik gezocht en gevonden op Rockblocking, dus ik denk dat het om twee verschillende songs gaat. Geintje hoor, ik denk dat dit mij nooit eerder is opgevallen...

Rockblocking klinkt eigenlijk ook wel leuker

Rustig weekje, maar wel met een nieuwe nummer #1.
Pavement komt met de tweede single van Terror Twilight, waarin wij ook nog even langskomen (...and the check when it arrived we went dutch, dutch, dutch, dutch).

Deze single van Duran Duran had ik destijds gemist, maar ik ken het nummer wel van de soundtrack van The Saint. Prima song van Medazzaland.

Qua top40-muziek is de periode 1996-2000 bij mij een klein beetje een zwart gat, dus ik ontdek nu allerlei hitjes uit deze tijd. De laatste tijd opvallend veel dance/trance-spul. Nu komt Nalin & Kane's Beachball bovendrijven. Lekker zomers lichtvoetig plaatje dat RYM onder 'ibiza trance' schaart.

Folk Implosion is een project van Lou Barlow (Sebadoh) en Insinuation vind ik een van de fijnere singles. Een soort gitaarvariant op triphop eigenlijk, dit nummer.

De hoogste nieuwe voor de geweldige single van Hurricane #1. Dat komt waarschijnlijk ook omdat dit de tune van Match Of The Day was tijdens het beste seizoen van Dennis Bergkamp ooit! Hurricane #1 is het bandje van o.a. Andy Bell (voorheen Ride; later Oasis & Beady Eye). Op dit moment zit ook Stuart Fletcher in Hurricane #. Fletcher zat in 1997 in The Seahorses (zie binnenkomst op #35).

Verder veel, heel veel, prima britpop maar ook Tonic's If You Could Only See. Al bijna een maand ou en had ik bijna over het hoofd gezien. Het nummer zal een nummer 1 notering halen in de Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks.
