Deze week waren 50tracks en ik samen met meivakantie en ja, dan kan het niet anders dat wij ook in dezelfde muzikale vijver aan het vissen waren! De nieuwe binnenkomers spreken voor zich en ik ben het dan ook in grote lijnen eens met de keuzes die eerder deze week door 50tracks al waren gemaakt.

Bij het scheiden van de markt ving ik nog wel net de nieuwe single van R.E.M. op, ook weer van uitzonderlijke kwaliteit.

Ik heb nog heel even getwijfeld aan de promo Let down van Radiohead. Daar is het volgende mee aan de hand. Het zou de eerste single worden van OK Computer. Maar de band vond de videoclip te slecht en trok de single terug. Later in de maand mei zou een andere single worden uitgebracht. Maar de promo van Let down die al was uitgezet, zou in je bezit kunnen zijn.

En dus kunnen worden genoteerd. Maar ja, ik begrijp dat Let down alsnog in september zal worden uitgebracht. Laat ik daar dan maar op wachten.

The Frank Cunimondo Trio beleeft zijn laatste week op 1; als ik mij niet vergis, was ik de enige die hem noteerde, en dat is voor een nummer 1 hit in mijn lijst wel zeldzaam.

Nu eindelijk ook in mijn lijst, terwijl hij bij mijn collega musician net verdween: Monaco met What do you want from me? Zoals bekend is dit een bandje van New Order's Peter Hook (samen met David Potts van Revenge). Een opvallende single, waarvan het couplet mij direct doet denken aan de coupletten van Love will tear us apart, en het refrein met Sha la la la la.... wel wat erg commercieel overkomt. Hoe dan ook, dit werd ook best een groot succes, zeker in de UK (in NL tipparade, dat is al heel wat natuurlijk).

Op 24 nog een nieuwe single van R.E.M., How the West was won. Niet een van hun bekendste, hij kwam mij bij herbeluistering totaal niet bekend voor, en mist ook een goed in het gehoor liggend refrein; wel een opvallend pianomotiefje, met steeds de bezwerende vocalen van Michael Stipe eroverheen. Als single een merkwaardige keuze.

Op 31 vinden we The Charlatans met een van hun 13 (!) noteringen uit mijn lijst, North country boy. De song is aan de trage kant, maar heeft wel stevige gitaren, en doet mij wel aan Oasis denken (Champagne supernova). Zonder dit te weten ga ik ervan uit dat die North country boy op de componist van The Charlatans zelf slaat.

De song Hush kenden we al van minstens twee versies, het origineel van Billie Joe Royal en de vroege cover van het vroege Deep Purple. Kula Shaker gooit er nog een schepje bovenop in een energieke versie die bol staat van gitaren, toetsen en gehaaste vocalen. Een prima cover, maar wel jammer dat juist dit dan de enige top 40 hit van deze band in NL wordt.

Bij mijn collega's zie ik van Tonic If you could only see verschijnen, maar bij mij komt op 35 binnen Open up your eyes (en die ander komt later nog eens). Volgens wiki was dit overigens wel de eerste single van Tonic (in de VS al in 1996 uitgebracht). De Amerikaanse rockband heeft met Open up your eyes een vrij traditioneel geluid, met passionele zang en stevige begeleiding, zonder dat het buiten de lijntjes kleurt.

Naar de laatste binnenkomer in mijn lijst was ik het meest nieuwsgierig, want het zei me niets meer. Catherine is geen zangeres, maar een Amerikaanse alternative rockband met mannelijke en vrouwelijke vocalen. Four leaf clover heeft een simpel refrein en vind ik verder niet zo memorabel; het lijkt mij dat uiterlijkheden bij deze band belangrijker zijn dan een goed liedje...

week 18 voor 1997 waarin The Wannadies naar 1 knallen en zo Blur achter zich laten. Verder 5 binnenkomers waarvan ik er in 1997 maar eentje kende, de hoogste.
Bloodhound Gang is de hoogste nieuwe met hun mix van alt rock, hip hop en veel (puberale) humor, destijds wel een sensatie.
Van Pollyanna had ik voor vorige week nogh nooit gehoord; er zijn ook meer acts met deze naam maar deze variant komt uit Australie en klinkt als kruising tussen Lemonheads en Buffalo Tom. Prima ontdekking.
Dover uit Spanje ken ik al langer, leren kennen met de opvolger van hun 1997 album. Muzikaal is het vooral alt rock met een flinke dosis grunge invloed.
The Gathering vond ik ten tijde van Mandilion erg goed, toen een poosje uit het oog verloren, op een bepaald moment weer opgepikt en heel erg vaak gezien. Nadat Anneke vertrok en vervangen werd door Silje ben ik snel een voorkeur voor die laatste gaan krijgen waardoor ik hun Anneke muziek nauwelijks meer draai. Maar nu deze single, dat is toch nog wel steeds gewoon goed natuurlijk.
Sussed stond in 1996 in mijn lijst; blijkbaar heb ik hun 2e overgeslagen maar hun 3e en laatste single mag de lijst weer in. Beetje Oasis achtig.

nieuw:
American Analog Set heb ik ooit eens een CD van gekocht op een platenbeurs denk ik. Had de naam wel eens gehoord, maar wist niet echt hoe het klonk. Dat album (The Golden Band) uiteindelijk veel gedraaid en van daaruit nog wat albums leren kennen. En nu jaren later blijkt er dan ook een single van het debuutalbum te zijn. Ingekorte versie van het nummer weliswaar, maar nog steeds erg mooi.

Jamiroquai met een wat vergeten single, die toch wel erg lekker blijkt. Heerlijke basje hierin.

Tricky met een prettige single, maar beetje bij beetje raakt het niveau van Maxinquaye steeds verder uit zicht.

The Seahorses is de band van ex-Stone Rose John Squire, die hier net als op Love Spreads een heerlijke potje gitaar wegspeelt. Het solodebuut van Ian Brown vind ik nog wel wat beter, die gaan we dacht ik ook dit jaar nog verwelkomen.

CJ Bolland is ook weer een terug met een nieuwe technoklapper, die begint met een stuk uit The Last Temptation of Christ (die ik nog steeds eens moet zien, maar nu Pasen net is geweest ben ik eigenlijk weer net te laat). Ik luister hier wel de originele mix (die als 2e op de single staat).

Mansun's vorige single viel me 25 jaar na dato eigenlijk wat tegen, maar Taxloss vind ik nog steeds erg goed merk ik. Ook het tweede stuk, meer dance-achtig, dat volgens mij af is gevallen voor de single edit. En ook een leuke clip, herinner ik me. Sowieso een goede single met ook Ski Jump Nose, een van hun leukste b-sides.

De nieuwe platen in de top 20:

19 | the wannadies – hit
Rock uit Zweden van The Wannadies, die succesvoller zijn in de UK dan in thuisland Zweden. Hierna volgt nog een single, maar intussen staakt de band uit protest tegen de in hun ogen slechte behandeling die ze krijgen van hun platenmaatschappij. Intussen gaat het weer beter en later dit jaar gaan ze weer op tournee. Je moet er dan wel een reisje naar naar Groot Brittannië of Ierland voor over hebben.

De tekst van dit nummer is hetzelfde als de b-kant van de Phuture’s klassieker Acid Tracks uit 1987. Het enige verschil is dat in het origineel wordt begonnen met de tekst ‘this is cocaine speaking’. Maar zonder die inleiding is het ook wel duidelijk wie aan het woord is. Waarschijnlijk zit er een persoonlijk linkje aan die keuze, want Flamman & Abraxas zaten in de Amerikaanse house-scene in de jaren ’80 toen zij daar woonden en een eigen platenzaak hadden in New York. Destijds, maar pas in 1992, waren ze ook de eerste Nederlandse act met een single in de Amerikaanse clubchart, onder de naam Fierce Ruling Diva.

En in het kader van de actualiteit: het overlijden van Jan Rot en het Songfestival volgende week: Flamman & Abraxas schreven samen met Jan Rot de songfestivalinzending E-mail to Berlin van Double Date. Een leuk nummer dat alleen zo vals gezongen werd dat het niet door de voorronde kwam.

Ik heb nooit van z'n levensdagen zo'n verschrikkelijke serie gezien als Friends. Wat een onrealistisch slap geouwehoer komt daar vandaan. Het zou eigenlijk verboden moeten worden maar er komt helaas maar geen einde aan. En als klap op de vuurpijl bestaat er nog zo'n zender als Comedy Central die maar geen genoeg krijgt van alle duizenden herhalingen. Al is die serie (blijkbaar) dus inmiddels meer dan 25 jaar oud.

Maar goed, om de één of andere reden slaagden ze er nog wel in een soort van vrolijke openingstune te vinden. Waardoor je kunt zeggen: oké, na het begin van de serie gelijk naar een andere zender. Maar daarvoor is ook deze single van The Rembrandts niet goed genoeg. Ik krijg al nachtmerries als het nummer begint zonder dat ik er ook maar iets van beelden bij heb. Dat wordt geen kanshebber voor een hoge notering.

Aan de andere kant, het debuut van Belle & Sebastian, dat ik niet kende, heeft mij hogelijk verrast. Dusdanig, dat ik het alle eer wil gunnen om de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer mag zijn, nog vóór de Placebo klassieker Bruise Pristine. Dat er ook zeker mag zijn en waarvan ik nog niet kan voorzien of het ook niet makkelijk gaat winnen van Belle & Sebastian. Want, hoewel een groot fan van Placebo, er kan niet worden ontkend, dat het goed maar ook heel duidelijk klinkt naar Placebo. Ook al is het ene nummer beter dan het andere, het is in dit geval minder verrassend dan Belle & Sebastian.

Maar ook de Bloodhound Gang (kende ik ook niet) en de nieuwe single van Billy Bragg mogen er zijn. Ik had eigenlijk ruimte voor drie nieuwe singles in mijn lijst. Maar de voorzienigheid bracht toch weer vijf briljantjes. En wie ben ik dan om te weigeren...

Gelukkig, ik dacht altijd dat ik de enige was
Was ook een afknapper altijd als je je (ex) vriendin beter leerde kennen, dat je allebei een totaal ander gevoel voor humor hebt als zij lyrisch erover bleek te zijn en een Friends videobox onder het tv meubel had staan.

Het schijnt dat je bij Friends na elke zin moet kunnen lachen.
Ik heb bij geen enkele "grap", bij geen enkele aflevering, zelfs maar kunnen glimlachen. Friends is geen humor.

Pas toen ik dreigde te stoppen met financiële ondersteuning van mijn studerende zoons kwam er een eind aan Friends op Comedy Central in huis. Op de vraag wat er in Godsnaam aan was, heb ik echt werkelijk nooit een goed antwoord gekregen. Het stond gewoon aan.

De top wordt deze week flink door elkaar gehusseld, en U2 pakt de bovenste positie (voor de zevende keer). De stijging van Monaco is zo groot dat-ie in de gezamenlijke niet zo hard zal wegzakken.

Zes binnenkomers maar liefst, maar slechts één hoger dan 30. Dat is Live met Freaks, en al weet ik niet of het terecht is, maar dit wordt hun enige nummer 1-hit in mijn top 40 (wel nog 6 nummer 2-hits...). Freaks begint nog vrij melodieus en prettig in het gehoor, maar in het refrein duikt de boze Ed Kowalczyk (spelling niet gecheckt) weer op, wat het liedje wel weer wat pit geeft, maar minder radiovriendelijk is. De singles van Live blijven onverminderd van goede kwaliteit.

Op 33 onvervalste R n B in mijn lijst van Tré, met wat inbreng van rapper Krayzie Bone. Deze was ik ook helemaal vergeten, maar vooral de samenzang van de dames is sterk. Vreemd genoeg kan ik op het internet nauwelijks iets vinden over dit trio, ik vermoed dat het een Britse band is, maar na dit kleine hitwapenfeit (tipparade in NL) hebben we niets meer van ze vernomen.

Op 34 alweer Bettie Serveert, nu met Rudder, en ja, dit klinkt ook weer als typisch Bettie Serveert, niet vervelend, niet opzienbarend.

Op 36 een nieuwe van jonge hondenband Foo Fighters, met ook op elke single een herkenbaar geluid van stevige gitaren, uptempo drums en en half geschreeuwde refreinen. Lekker klinkt dit wel. Een monkey wrench is kennelijk een soort moersleutel, voor wie dat altijd al had willen weten. (Volgens mijn schrift was het een boerderij voor apen.)

Het lijkt mij logisch dat het precies 25 jaar geleden ook Moederdag was, dus vandaar op 38 This is to mother you van Sinéad O'Connor. Het is een rustig liedje waarin ze haar kind beschermend toespreekt. Des te schrijnender als je weet hoe het met één van haar kinderen is afgelopen.

Zelfs op 39 nog een nieuwe (gebeurt bij mij zelden, op 40 kwam toen nooit meer voor), Robbie Williams met zijn debuutsingle bij mij: Old before I die. Het is een vrij conventionele rockachtige single, met een nog jonge en wilde Robbie; zijn stem is ook nog niet zo ontwikkeld als het later zou klinken. Deze single was geen reden om te vermoeden dat er nog een heel succesvolle solocarrière zou volgen.

week 19 voor 1997 waar de Wannadies stevig op 1 blijven staan en No Doubt voor de 2e keer binnen een jaar de top 3 haalt met deze single. Verder 4 binnenkomers.
Bis komt hun beste single, voor mij dan, met de hele lange titel. Lekker uptempo springerig nummer.
Republica met de opvolger van hun hit Ready to Go, in nederland genegeerd maar misschien is dit ook wel hun beste single voor mij.
Kenickie komt dan met hun 4e single van hun album, dit keer met en beetje 60s sound, beetje Pipettes, maar dan wel met hard gitaar tussendoor. Ik dach tdat deze single tegenviel maar niks, prima nummer.
Pavement en Shady Lane, ik begin toch steeds meer te wennen aan het geluid van Pavement. Ook leuk dat door de nieuwe (2022) clip van Harness Your Hopes ik stukjes uit de clip herken (die clip is grotendeels een collage van oude clips)

Primal Scream is na het Stones-achtige Give Out But Don't Give Up weer terug met een wat gewaagder album, waarin rock gecombineerd wordt met dub, dance en electronica. Het zou een alternatieve soundtrack zijn voor de 70s cultfilm Vanishing Point, waarvan Primal Scream vond dat het een betere soundtrack verdiende. Kowalski is in ieder geval de geweldige leadsingle en vernoemd naar de hoofdpersoon uit de film.

Twist and Crawl is de volgende single van Death in Vegas, met als ik het goed versta -hij namedropt zichzelf- Ranking Roger van The Beat als vocalist. Waar de vorige singles meer richting dance/big beat gingen, is dit opzwepende ragga met een fijne baslijn erin.

Elastica komt nog met een late single van hun album uit 1995 en daar ben ik wel blij mee, want 2:1 vind ik een van hun sterkste nummers. Maar ik heb het ook wel heel veel gedraaid via de Trainspotting soundtrack. Hierna blijft het wel echt een paar jaar stil rond de band, helaas.

Eels was ik destijds enorm fan van, maar na het derde album ben ik eigenlijk afgehaakt. Susan's House blijft wel een van de betere nummers van het debuut, ook door de goed verwerkte sample van Gladys Knight's Love Find Its Own Way.

R.E.M.'s nieuwe single vind ik erg goed, maar eigenlijk meer als albumopener dan als single. Een wereld van verschil met hun hits, want verre van hitgevoelig. Maar wel erg goed. Deze gaat ongetwijfeld nog flink stijgen.

Aphrodite haalde laatst ook mijn lijst al en hier is de opvolger. Ik denk wel een van de 3, 4 drum 'n' bass nummers die ik het meest gehoord heb in mijn leven. Het leek wel alsof deze op elke donderdagavond in wijlen het LVC langskwam. Door het hele lange intro ook goed bruikbaar op clubavonden die niet specifiek gericht op drum 'n' bass waren, wat dat betreft wel vergelijkbaar met Bomfunk MC's' Freestyler die over een paar jaar komt (en ook een heel lang intro heeft).

De hoogste binnenkomer is een nummer dat in 1997 en 1998 gebruikt wordt tijdens Match of the Day. Gitarist Andy Bell – nee, niet die van Erasure, komt van Ride, gaat hierna naar Gay Dead en in 2004 naar Oasis.

16 | rammstein – engel
De tweede single van Sehnsucht. In de videoclip speelt een deel van de band in andere rollen, zoals die gitarist die drumt en de bassist die zingt.

18 | mansun – taxloss
Taxloss, of eigenlijk Taxlo$$, is de nieuwe single van Mansun. De video is geregisseerd door de voor mij onbekende Roman Coppola, broer van Sofia Coppola en zoon van Francis Ford Coppola.

19 | bloodhound gang - fire water burn
Een parodie op rapmusic, met een refrein dat is overgenomen van The Roof Is on Fire van Rock Master Scott & the Dynamic Three en een vrije vertaling van een stuk uit Monkey Gone to Heaven van The Pixies. Het nummer kwam bijna nergens hoger in de hitparades dan in Nederland. Alleen in Noorwegen deed het nummer het nog iets beter.

Week 20

Twee Nederlandstalige nummers komen binnen, die vast niet de eindlijst zullen halen: op #8 het nummer dat Hans Kraay opnam naar aanleiding van de supportersrellen met dodelijke afloop. Nu ik het weer luister, merk ik hoe abominabel slecht het in elkaar zit, maar destijds had ik het ook in mijn lijst.
Ome Henks verhalen zijn bijna altijd leuker dan de liedjes, maar ja, dat zijn geen singles, dus dan maar deze alsnog vrij vermakelijke hit.

Het Songfestival blijft één van de programma's op tv waar je je makkelijk van kunt afwenden, zeker als het voor zo'n goed doel is als het maken van een volgend lijstje voor 1997!

Dat neemt niet weg, dat er ook best bands met gevoel voor drama naar boven kunnen komen. Zo hebben met name Marillion en Skunk Anansie het behoorlijk moeilijk. Het hoort natuurlijk bij de act. Maar het is in beide gevallen drama van de bovenste plank.

De albumversie van Skunk Anansie kan zelfs oplopen tot negen en een halve minuut, reden waarom ik liever kies voor de single versie.

Primal Scream stond wel in mijn tiplijst, was een onbekend nummer. Dankzij herman inderdaad nauwkeurig beluisterd en er zit zeker groei in. En dat allemaal nog ingepast, slechts drie nieuwe binnenkomers omdat het al zo druk is. Terwijl ik voor de maand mei nog zeker 50 interessante tips heb liggen.

Maar om deze drie kon ik zeker niet heen.

Hoewel de band toch al de nodige bekendheid had deed deze single van Counting Crows helemaal niets, zelfs in Amerika wist het geen enkele pot te breken.



En dat zelfde kan gezegd worden van deze single van Marillion, de 1ste single van het This Strange Engine album.

En dan nog Monaco, de opvolger van het behoorlijk succesvolle What Do You Want From Me, zo catchy als die is het natuurlijk niet en er zitten wat geforceerde beats in maar het is toch wel een aardig liedje wat hier in de gezamelijke lijst vast niet het zelfde succes gaat bereiken.
