- Ergens in de jaren '90 hoorde ik een bloedmooi liedje op de Kink FM, maar miste ik de aankondiging. Het heeft nog jaren geduurd voor ik erachter kwam wat het was, want in die tijd kon je niet even snel een stukje songtekst googlen en van Shazam had de wereld al helemaal nog niet gehoord. Dat bleek dus Mad Dog Loose met het nummer Take Me Down, een liedje dat kan wedijveren met de beste rustige dEUS-liedjes. Wel triest dat begin dit jaar 2 van de 4 bandleden -waaronder de zanger- veel te vroeg zijn overleden.
- Bitter Sweet Symphony is natuurlijk een iconisch nummer, maar eigenlijk kan ik me nauwelijks nog herinneren wat ik er nu destijds echt van vond. Afgaande op mijn administratie van toen was ik best onder de indruk, na een bescheiden start kwam 'ie tot plek 7 in mijn lijst. Maar daarna kreeg ik er toch wel snel genoeg van, voor mij een nummer dat in het rijtje Wonderwall, Losing My Religion, etc. kan: veel te vaak gehoord. Net als toen zullen de latere singles van Urban Hymns wel beter gaan scoren.
- Cornelius was destijds een Alternative Nation-favorietje. Maffe clip, maffe sound. Maar op de een of andere manier wel erg leuk. De Japanner werd destijds o.a. een moderne Brian Wilson en de Japanse Beck genoemd. En blijkbaar is hij familie van de zangeres van Lush, waarvan ik volgens mij niet eens wist dat ze half-Japans was.
- Salad scoorde bij mij 1 grote hit met Drink The Elixer, maar verder was het toch meestal net niet. Deze vind ik dan wel weer leuk. Het begint nog lief en ingetogen, tot daar ineens een scherp Elastica-achtig refrein wordt ingezet.
- The Wannadies zijn bijna altijd leuk, al is Shorty lang geen Hit laat staan You and Me Song. Maar ik geniet er nog maar even van, want hierna lijkt de koek wel een beetje op wat leuke singles betreft. Maar dat mag ook wel na 8 jaar leuke plaatjes uitbrengen.
- Luna was ooit het vervolg op Galaxie 500, maar klonk eigenlijk nooit echt heel anders. Altijd maar die meeslepende melancholische indierock, in het begin weergaloos, later steeds meer gewoon wel okay. Nu met stemvervormer eens een iets steviger geluid en dat bevalt ook goed.

De nieuwe platen in de top 20:

Bekend van Friends en ook mede geschreven door de twee mensen achter Friends, maar ook de inmiddels overleden Allee Williams. Zij schreef weer mee aan September van Earth, Wind & Fire en What Have I Done to Deserve This van de Pet Shop Boys. Oorspronkelijk was het alleen maar geschreven voor serie. The Rembrandts plakten er later twee coupletten aan vast en een hit was geboren. Overigens was R.E.M. eerst gevraagd of één van hun nummers gebruikt mocht worden voor Friends, maar zij hadden daar geen interesse in.

Een nummer over de natuur, romantische trouw en het verstrijken van tijd, oftewel een les over het optimaal gebruik maken van onze korte tijd hier op aarde. Dat is weer eens wat anders als thema voor een nummer.
17 | the charlatans - how high
In het kader van het 25-jarige jubileum van dit nummer heeft zanger Tim Burgess onlangs een replica van het jasje dat hij in de videoclip draagt op de markt gebracht. Helaas voor de liefhebbers: het was een limited edition en het is inmiddels uitverkocht. Toevallig kwam Tim Burgess voor in een boek dat ik aan het lezen ben (Exit Stage Left: The curious afterlife of pop stars van Nick Duerden), waarin hij ook voor komt. Daarin las ik over een interessante actie die hij had tijdens de lockdowns: Tim’s Twitter Listening Party. Hierbij luisterde hij naar een album terwijl hij live twitterde, met meestal de artiest waar het om ging erbij. Net als nummer 15 een nummer over het leven: mmmbop en je bent er, mmmbop en je bent weer weg, Met z’n drieën hebben ze inmiddels 15 (!) kinderen, dus in de toekomst is de kans groot dat we weer een Hanson tegenkomen met een nieuwe plaat. Nog een super interessant weetje: ze zijn als Hanson met z’n drieën, maar zij hebben ook nog eens vier broers en zussen.

En? Had Robbie Williams op dit ogenblik al ruzie met de Gallagher broers van Oasis? Ik vraag het maar even, want persoonlijk vind ik, als ik de nieuwe single van Williams hoor, dat hij toch geweldige dingen heeft gedaan. Aan het begin van zijn solo-carrière. Die eerste albums met die eerste singles.
Maar laat ze maar steggelen, in het kader van wie heeft de grootste, waarschijnlijk is dat de muziek alleen maar ten goede gekomen. Althans, zeker op dit ogenblik.
Ik was ook erg onder de indruk van de Seahorses en Savage garden. Er is dringend een frisse wind nodig om al die ouwe nummers een klein beetje van concurrentie te voorzien. Het wordt nu wel weer eens tijd voor een wisseling van de wacht. En deze singles kunnen het.

Nu zit al de hele top 4 vast. Alleen The Verve lijkt hier nog doorheen te kunnen snijden, we zullen het zien.
Op 23 weer een nieuwe single van U2, Last night on Earth. En ook deze scoort weer kort maar krachtig in de NL top 40, en langduriger in mijn eigen lijst. Meer dan het stukje rond de titel kan ik hier niet van onthouden, het klinkt herkenbaar en oké, maar niet al te sterk.
UB40 heeft in zijn beginjaren nog zeven keer mijn top 40 gehaald, maar sinds 1985 niet meer. En nu, aan het eind van hun hitcarrière, scoren ze toch nog een bescheiden notering bij mij. Tell me is it true klinkt ook niet zo belegen en voorspelbaar als hun grote (vaak cover) hits, maar redelijk fris met een pittige ritmesectie en een vlot tempo. Dit is ook hun laatste hit bij mij, en opmerkelijker, ook in de NL top 40.
Regelmatig kom ik binnenkomers tegen die mij niets zeggen, en die ook lastig terug te vinden. Tuesday Child is een Nederlandse band met een veelgeprezen album uit 1997, maar geen video op Youtube of opname op Spotify. Wel trof ik een 2 meter sessie aan, maar die brengt mij nog meer in verwarring. Ze spelen als tweede nummer een song die genoemd wordt I want you, maar die begint met de tekst Doing time... Appeltje eitje zou je denken. Maar de video zegt dat de song I want you heet, en dat zingen ze ook in het refrein. En op het album heten de eerste twee songs... Doing time en I want you. Ik twijfel dus of ik de juiste song heb ik gehoord. Maar zo ja: het is een pianoballade, zeer stemmig, had een groter publiek verdiend (wel ontsierd door ongegeneerd gerook van de zanger). Als iemand hier toevallig meer van weet hoor ik het graag.
Op 36 Brainbug met Nightmare. Dit zei mij ook niets, maar het is gelukkig duidelijk terug te vinden. Brainbug is een Italiaanse trance producer en Nightmare is zijn grootste succes, dat ook in NL de tipparade wist te halen. De synths worden afgewisseld met dreigende staccato vioolklanken die het inderdaad wat nachtmerrieachtig maken. Een beetje Children (Robert Miles) meets Jaws of Psycho.

Nu zit al de hele top 4 vast. Alleen The Verve lijkt hier nog doorheen te kunnen snijden, we zullen het zien.
Op 23 weer een nieuwe single van U2, Last night on Earth. En ook deze scoort weer kort maar krachtig in de NL top 40, en langduriger in mijn eigen lijst. Meer dan het stukje rond de titel kan ik hier niet van onthouden, het klinkt herkenbaar en oké, maar niet al te sterk.
UB40 heeft in zijn beginjaren nog zeven keer mijn top 40 gehaald, maar sinds 1985 niet meer. En nu, aan het eind van hun hitcarrière, scoren ze toch nog een bescheiden notering bij mij. Tell me is it true klinkt ook niet zo belegen en voorspelbaar als hun grote (vaak cover) hits, maar redelijk fris met een pittige ritmesectie en een vlot tempo. Dit is ook hun laatste hit bij mij, en opmerkelijker, ook in de NL top 40.
Regelmatig kom ik binnenkomers tegen die mij niets zeggen, en die ook lastig terug te vinden. Tuesday Child is een Nederlandse band met een veelgeprezen album uit 1997, maar geen video op Youtube of opname op Spotify. Wel trof ik een 2 meter sessie aan, maar die brengt mij nog meer in verwarring. Ze spelen als tweede nummer een song die genoemd wordt I want you, maar die begint met de tekst Doing time... Appeltje eitje zou je denken. Maar de video zegt dat de song I want you heet, en dat zingen ze ook in het refrein. En op het album heten de eerste twee songs... Doing time en I want you. Ik twijfel dus of ik de juiste song heb ik gehoord. Maar zo ja: het is een pianoballade, zeer stemmig, had een groter publiek verdiend (wel ontsierd door ongegeneerd gerook van de zanger). Als iemand hier toevallig meer van weet hoor ik het graag.
Op 36 Brainbug met Nightmare. Dit zei mij ook niets, maar het is gelukkig duidelijk terug te vinden. Brainbug is een Italiaanse trance producer en Nightmare is zijn grootste succes, dat ook in NL de tipparade wist te halen. De synths worden afgewisseld met dreigende staccato vioolklanken die het inderdaad wat nachtmerrieachtig maken. Een beetje Children (Robert Miles) meets Jaws of Psycho.

Nee, die playlist had ik niet gezien, thanks! De track I want you uit die lijst is dezelfde als die uit de 2 meter sessie, en die begint met Doing time, maar het refrein is I want you. Het blijft dus onzeker...

week 28 voor 1997 waar de top 4 blijft staan, wel wat snelle stijgers tussen 5 en 11 die zich er tussen zullen willen wringen. 4 binnenkomers.
Tampasm heb ik pas dit jaar ontdekt, in het straatje van Kenickie en Fluffy maar iets meer punk. Erg lekker in elk geval.

Dit nummer is gebaseerd op de frustratie van de dame die samen met Meredith Brooks dit nummer schreef: het lukt maar niet om door te breken als schrijver van een hit en daarbij dacht ze aan haar man thuis die met haar moest dealen als ze weer thuis kwam.
