De eerste single van de Smashing Pumpkins na Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is speciaal geschreven voor een Batmanfilm. Omdat het voor een andere platenmaatschappij is, kom je het nummer later niet tegen op de Greatest Hits cd.

11 | olive - you're not alone
Dit nummer was in 1996 al een klein hitje, maar nu in 1997 wordt het echt een grote hit. Olive bestond uit de oud-keyboardspeler van Simply Red, een ex-lid van Nightmares on Wax en zangeres Ruth-Ann Boyle, die later nummers voor Enigma zou zingen en die daarna een soloplaat zou uitbrengen geproduceerd door de man achter Enigma: Michael Cretu. Dus eigenlijk werd ze de de opvolgster van Sandra, die voorheen de stem van Enigma was en wiens platen door Michael Cretu geproduceerd werden.

15 | weezer - pink triangle
Een nummer gebaseerd op een een ervaring van zanger van Weezer. Hij werd tijdens zijn studententijd verliefd op een vrouw waarvan hij zich kon voorstellen dat hij de rest van zijn leven bij haar zou kunnen zijn. Totdat hij de pink triangle zag op haar rugzak, waarmee duidelijk werd dat hij geen kans maakte bij haar.

19 | world party - beautiful dream
Een single van het laatste album van World Party als duo. Hierna blijft Karl Wallinger alleen over en zal het drie jaar duren voordat er weer een plaat komt. In de tussentijd gaat Robbie Williams de rekeningen betalen, want hij brengt een succesvolle cover uit van She’s The One, een ander nummer van die plaat.

20 | hero - toen ik je zag
Hero alias Anthonie Kamerling met een nummer geschreven door Guus Meeuwis (en nog iemand, maar omdat die onbekend is vergeet ik hem gewoon). Het is een nummer uit de film All Stars, waarin het gezongen wordt door Anthonie’s filmpersonage Hero.

Niet echt een grote hit dacht ik, in Nederland deed t (uiteraard) niets en Engeland met een 23ste plek matig maar bv in Duitsland (11de), Italie (1ste), Spanje (4de), Zweden (10de) en Finland (15de) toch een zeer behoorlijke tot grote hit.

Als een album ook eenmaal goed loopt en ook goed is ontvangen, is elke single die er van af wordt gehaald in de regel ook wel een succes.

Hurricane #1 is er een mooi voorbeeld van: ook de opvolger van Step into my world is om door een ringetje te halen. Prima rockmuziek, prima bijbehorend album.
Het geldt eigenlijk ook voor Silver Sun. Ook die band heb ik nog niet op een schoonheidsfoutje op het bijbehorende titelloze debuutalbum kunnen betrappen. En elke single komt wel weer binnen in de lijst.

Ook de Wannadies hebben een bekende naam. En ook Shorty heeft weer voldoende in zich om een grote hit te worden. Prettig, als dit soort van zekerheden zich in warme tijden zo spontaan blijven aanbieden.

Een ijzersterke nummer 1, maar ook een ijzersterke nummer 2. Spijtig genoeg voor Supergrass is Radiohead net iets ijzersterkerder.

Op 23 Olive met You're not alone. Ik ben blij dat ik er goed op tijd bij ben, meestal loop ik achter met releases van nog niet gevestigde namen. De song is redelijk standaard goed, maar wordt heel bijzonder door die opzettelijk haperende synths, waardoor het wel een soort klassieker is geworden, en ook gewoon de NL top 40 gehaald heeft. Het zal wel bij deze ene notering blijven.

Op 28 komt Mansun stevig binnen met She makes my nose bleed. De weg was al wat geëffend door Wide open space, dat maakt het voor opvolgers al wat makkelijker om de weg omhoog te vinden. Deze single klinkt prima, zonder ergens door op te vallen.

Placebo, nog altijd actief, komt op 33 binnen met Bruise pristine. en ja, dit is hun debuut. Het gaat meteen stevig tekeer op deze single. Brian Molko klinkt nu vertrouwd, maar toen was dit toch wel een sensatie, met zoveel vuur gezongen, en dan gaat de tekst nog langs me heen ook.

Ook Guided by Voices, een Amerikaanse indierockband uit Ohio, debuteert in mijn lijst, op 36 met Bulldog skin. Het is vrij stevige, maar niet al te scherpe gitaarrock, met een simpel refrein, dat daardoor makkelijk blijft hangen.

Op 37 Depeche Mode met Home, zeker geen debuut, maar hun 24e notering. De band scoort langzaamaan minder hoog in mijn lijst, maar deze weet in ieder geval nog het linkerrijtje te halen. Hij klinkt ook wat anders dan het standaardgeluid, vooral omdat niet Dave Gahan zingt, maar Martin Gore. Verder klinkt het totaal niet meer industrieel, eerder ballad-achtig, met veel (echte?) violen. Maar zo hoor ik de band ook net zo lief.

week 25 voor 1997 waarin Bis behoorlijke concurrentie krijgt en er 5 nieuwen zijn waarvan twee in de top 20.
Dolly uit Frankrijk ontdekte ik pas veel later, toen ik de band Manu leerde kennen. Dat bleek een doorstart van de band Dolly, van 3 bandleden die elkaar op de begrafenis van de 4e, de bassist, tegenkwamen en besloten weer muziek te gaan maken. Dolly, met name de eerste 2 albums, is (net als Manu) helemaal mijn muziek, franse breeders meets smashing pumpkins, ofzo.
Supergrass met de opvolger van Richard III, ik hoor veel dat dit hun beste zou zijn maar volgens mij vind ik Richard III toch net een toefje beter nog. Verder wel een prima nummer natuurlijk.
The Charlatans, toch begonnen als Madchester band klinken hier op hun meest Oasis-st; ik kende deze nauwelijks eigenlijk.
Alisha's Attick komt met hun 4e single van hun debutalbum, net als de vorige 3 komt het in de UK bijna tot in de top 10. Dit is geloof ik wel het rustigste nummer van de vier.
Cathy Dennis probeert het nog een keer met een single, nog niet wetend dat ze als songschrijver veel succesvoller zal worden dan als zangeres. Dit is overigens wel haar laatste single.

Is The Verve de single van 1997? Hij lijkt wel bij iedereen te verschijnen. Maar er waren meer singles tot nu toe waar ik dat van dacht en die niet volledige support kregen. In ieder geval zal hij lang in mijn lijst gaan rondzwerven vermoed ik.
Terwijl The Smashing Pumpkins van de Batman & Robin soundtrack hier slaagt, push ik gewoon de veel leukere track van Bone van die soundtrack, kan alleen maar hopen dat ranboy daaraan blootgesteld werd 25 jaar geleden , die zou er nog oor voor kunnen hebben.

Ocean Colour Scene pakt snel door na de singles van Moseley Shoals, de opvolger daarvan lag ook al een goed jaar later in de winkel. Leadsingle Hundred Mile High City is een geweldig energieke rhythm & blues britpopkraker.

Depeche Mode's Home is een rustig nummer voor hun doen, met een magnifiek middenstuk waarin het nummer even stilvalt. Het doet ook een beetje filmmuziek-achtig aan.

Primal Scream's nieuwe single is een ballad, met de legendarische 70s dub/reggae-producer Augustus Pablo op de melodica. Niet lang hierna zou hij overlijden aan de gevolgen van een klaplong.

Roni Size's Reprazent brengt de voetjes in beweging met de drum & bass van Share the Fall. Na een minuut of 5 komt er ook een saxofoon in het spel en neemt het nummer een wat tegendraadse jazzy afslag.

Blur's Song 2 heb ik een beetje aan me voorbij laten gaan, nooit zo'n fan geweest van dat nummer. On Your Own is een stuk leuker, al had ik liever een single release gezien van Look Inside America of Strange News from Another Star.

Mono's Life in Mono deed het erg goed bij, en was destijds ook een fijne One Hit Wonder, op MTV tenminste. Deze Silicone had ik nog niet zo vaak gehoord, maar ben ik de afgelopen wel meer gaan waarderen. Mooie productie met wat jaren '60 elementen, een soort kruising tussen Portishead, Broadcast en Hoover.

De hoogste nieuwe is vermoedelijk een toekomstige nummer 1. Het verhaal over de sample en de Rolling Stones kent iedereen al, dus daarom maar wat anders: de videoclip – Richard Ashcroft loopt over straat – is afgekeken van Massive Attacks Unfinished Symphony. De tekst, “try to make ends meet, you’re a slave to money, then you die”, past bij Richard Ashcrofts eigen situatie: zijn vader had een slecht betaalde baan en stierf onverwacht toen hij Richard Ashcroft 11 was. Toen wist hij meteen dat hij niet zo’n soort leven wilde lijden.

De Tindersticks willen in bad om Londen van zich af te wassen. Het is mij niet helemaal duidelijk of het gaat om letterlijk afwassen om weg te gaan uit Londen of figuurlijk, als een verlangen naar toen ze nog geen bekende band waren.

De jongens van de Teenage Fanclub zijn toch echt dertig jaar te laat begonnen: Ain't that enough is een perfecte sixties single, een griezelig goed lijkende kruising tussen de Byrds en de Beach Boys. Zou dat opzet zijn geweest of hadden de jongens er gewoon zin in om zo te klinken. Het is allemaal nog erg zomers ook dus ook dat komt goed uit. Alleen waren de Beach Boys en de Byrds uiterlijk klaar in twee en een halve minuut. En daar kwam je in 1997 blijkbaar niet mee weg. Maar een leuke single is het.

Dat geldt eigenlijk ook voor James. Een nieuwe single van deze band is eigenlijk altijd goed en dat zie je terug in de resultaten.

De vuile rock komt van Ben Harper. Ook hier zeker een single die je niet mag uitvlakken. Gun is nog even wennen, niet zo stevig als het vorige werk.

De nummers 1 en 2 zitten voorlopig vast, daar zal de spanning niet vandaan komen.

Op 19 komt Oasis binnen met D'you know what I mean. Zo te zien ben ik de eerste hiermee, waarschijnlijk werd hij dus al op de radio gedraaid voor de releasedate. Het is de typische Oasis-sound, met die zeurderige zang, stevige gitaar en nu ook zwaar met violen georkestreerd (meestal een teken dat een band op zijn commerciële hoogtepunt zit, maar dat de artistieke neergang ook is ingezet). Dankzij een wat onnodig lange coda zit er toch wel iets verrassends in deze song.

Op 24 de Utrechtse band Dooa met Crazy if I do. Youtube heeft 648 weergaven voor deze song. Ik zal hem sindsdien ook niet meer gehoord hebben. Het betreft een midtempo rocksong die opvalt door de zang (met Nederlands accent) en vooral door de mondharmonica. De sfeer is wat richting crossover met hiphop, maar dat is de muziek toch niet (sorry, beetje vaag). Wel aardig, ook wat eentonig.

Op 34 The Verve met hun debuutsingle (bij mij in ieder geval), Bittersweet symphony. Of dit dé hit van 1997 gaat worden? Als het aan mijn notering ligt, wel... Uiteraard opgebouwd rond een sample uit een klassieke bewerking van The last time; het gekke vond ik altijd wel in deze zaak dat in de klassieke sample absoluut niets is terug te horen van het Stones-origineel, terwijl de componisten Jagger/Richards hier wel bakken vol geld voor gekregen hebben... Nou ja, wij houden er een geweldige song aan over, met meeslepende tekst en geweldig gezongen.

Op 37 een buitenbeentje (in mijn lijst dan) van The Mexakinz, featuring Xzibit (namelijk gebaseerd op Paparazzi), een rapsong die deels in het Engels, maar ook deels in het Spaans gerapt wordt Verder niet zo opmerkelijk.

Vorige week had ik een hele rij aan ijzersterke (Britse) binnenkomers en deze week is het een stuk magerder. De enige binnenkomer is dan wel weer erg Brits (met een Amerikaanse road videoclip, dat dan weer wel). Het is een aardig liedje en moet zeker in mijn lijst maar het haalt het niveau van de twee vorige singles niet.

Eels - Susan's House

week 26 voor 1997 waarin Olive het stokje over neemt van Bis, Dolly (gister nog acterend in het franse liedjes topic) flink doorstijgt en er 5 binnenkomers zijn.
Ik was echt wel Friends liefhebber destijds, ik heb waarschijnlijk alle afleveringen wel gezien. De theme song heb ik dus ook ontzettend vaak gehoord, dat het dan nu ook nog een hit wordt is bijna overkill. Maar het blijft toch ook wel een goed nummer.
Veruca Salt komt met de 2e single van het 2e album, na het uitbundige Volcano Girls schakelen ze weer een tandje terug, meer grunge geluid.
Urusei Yatsura komt met hun 2e notering dit jaar, deze staat blijkbaar niet op het album en ook niet op spotify helaas. Verder een lekker noise rock nummer.
Shakira was in deze jaren al druk bezig, maar natuurlijk kende in Nederland nauwelijks iemand haar. In de franse chart kwam deze single wel al opduiken. Wat meer rock en minder commercieel dan haar doorbraaksingles van een jaar of 3 later.
Ocean Colour Scene is niet een favoriet van me, maar ze hebben (blijkbaar) toch wel singles die best ok zijn, zoals deze.

nieuw:
Lo-Fidelity All Stars heb ik altijd wel een zwak voor gehad, al komt dat met name door de singles die volgend jaar verschijnen. Epische big beat met stoere, snerpende vocalen die me altijd aan Liam Gallagher doen denken. Na de break halverwege landt het nummer en mag het van mij nog wel langer doorgaan dan het nu doet.

25 jaar geleden zat ik zo diep in mijn Kink FM/Alternative Nation-bubbel dat de hitparade grotendeels langs me heen ging. Zo ook Missy Elliott's debuutsingle. Wel fijn om dit heerlijke lome pareltje nu alsnog goed te leren kennen. Inventieve productie van Timbaland, een van de beste hitproducers ooit eigenlijk. En het stukje "beep beep, who got the keys to the jeep... vrrrrrooommmm" is ook heerlijk.

The Jayhawks doen niets nieuws, maar toch vind ik dit wel weer een hele fijne single van ze. Goede samenzang ook. Deze band doet me trouwens altijd enorm aan Daryll-Ann denken, of is het andersom?

The Crystal Method scoorde al eerder een hit bij mij en ook de 2e single van deze Amerikaanse Chemical Brothers is weer raak. Vooral productioneel dan, met een hele volle, vette sound en een bas zo diep dat het lijkt alsof er een onderzeeër onder het huis doorvaart. De sfeer is indrukwekkend, maar qua compositie ben ik nog niet helemaal mee, er lijkt weinig ontwikkeling in te zitten.

The Aloof zei me verder niets, maar eigenlijk zijn dit gewoon 2 van de 3 leden van Sabres of Paradise (alleen Andrew Weatherall doet niet mee). Een eerdere single deed me niet veel, maar deze is wel bijzonder. Een wat spookachtige mix van uptempo triphop en breakbeat.

Supergrass' Cheapskate vond ik altijd een van de leukste nummers van het album, het verwonderde altijd dat het nooit als single is uitgebracht. Maar nu zag ik hem wel voorbij komen in Billboard Magazine. Blijkbaar was het wel een single release in de VS en Canada. Fijn dat ik hem nu alsnog op kan nemen, al vind ik hem nu lang niet meer zo leuk als toen.

Ik vind het toch knap, Paul McCartney die gerenommeerde jaren '90 artiesten achter zich weet te laten als hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer. Oasis, Dinosaur jr. en U2 zijn niet de eerste de besten om een klein understatement te gebruiken.

Maar juist bij McCartney gaat juist alles goed op deze nieuwe single. Gevarieerd, goede compositie.

Oasis, de hand van Noel Gallagher duidelijk voelbaar, is een beetje aan de tamme kant en ik moet er nog even aan wennen. Dinosaur jr. doet weinig verkeerd maar is het net zo goed als de vorige reeks aan singles. Die stem van J Mascis (Joe voor intimi) blijft wel altijd geweldig, natuurlijk.

En met U2 lijkt er ook weinig aan de hand, de vorige single stond zelfs een aantal weken op één. Maar ondanks het vrij stevige geluid ervaar ik het nog even als wat gewoontjes. En dan kan het zomaar gebeuren dat Paul McCartney de macht grijpt. Of eigenlijk weer terug pakt.

3 Colours Red is trouwens ook best aardig.

week 27 voor 1997 waar Olive schijnbaar onbedreigd op 1 staat, of zouden Cardigans, Dolly of Rembrandts er echt wat aan kunnen doen... Er staat best veel in m'n lijst wat ik destijds nog niet kende, maar zeker van Cathy Dennis had ik destijds toch niet verwacht dat die 25 jaar later nog indruk zou gaan maken, maar er is toch iets met dat nummer wat me aanspreekt. Goed, niet voor niks dat ze zeer succesvol is geworden als songschrijver, dat kan ze duidelijk wel. Vier binnenkomers.
Meredith Brooks is een echte eendagsvlieg, toch had ik al een album van haar in de kast staan toen ik dit nummer leerde kennen. Daar kwam ik pas later achter aangezien ze onderdeel was van de band The Graces, de band van ex-Gogo's Charlotte Caffey. Destijds vond ik dit natuurlijk ween gaaf nummer, bij herbeluisteren dacht ik wel: ik dacht dat-ie harder was.
Linoleum is ook een band die ik pas later ontdekte, erg fijne band met vooral shoegaze invloeden. Marquis is het openingnummer van het album dat later in 1997 verschijnt.
The Wannadies komen met de opvolger van Hit, de clip begint nog met een soort 'previously' maar dan het nieuwe nummer. Deze nieuwe hangt een beetje tussen het harde energieke Hit en hun bekendste, eh, hit, You and Me Song (zeker als je Always Always gaat zingen).
Hurricane #1, nooit van gehoord voor dit jaar. Ze blijken een band die toch nog een britpop graantje wil meepikken maar ook andere invloeden zoals madchester meeneemt.

Soms moet ik even zoeken naar de plaat die in mijn schrift staat. Op 2 juli 1997 kwam binnen Scared of you van The Jayhawks. Alleen heeft die band nooit een song met die titel uitgegeven. Bij anderen zag ik staan dat Big star nu de single is van The Jayhawks. Maar daar komt geen tekst Scared of you in voor. Dan maar op lyrics gegoogled, en dan rolt hij er zo uit: Dying for the vine, van het album Sound of Lies uit 1997. Of dit een single is geweest, waag ik te betwijfelen. Maar ik heb hem van de radio opgepikt, misschien wel vaker. Dat ik hem Scared of you noemde, is logisch, dat zou de voordehandliggende titel zijn. Wel wat meer een albumtrack, met een complexere opbouw. Maar wel een stuk beter dan Big star .

Op 25 onze eigen Urban Dance Squad met Carbon copy, een midtempo rock song, niet erg opvallend, wel weer een kritische tekst (I don't wanna be a carbon copy), maar vrees ik niet in de galerij der klassiekers.

Op 28 toch ook bij mij de opvolger van What do you want from me, van Monaco, Sweet lips, allang vergeten. Deze is nog veel meer disco en simpeler dan de voorganger, misschien wel wat te makkelijk, want het succes werd niet voortgezet.

Ik vergeet nogal veel uit deze tijd. Ik wist nog wel dat History een albumtitel was van Michael Jackson, maar niet dat het ook een song was die ook nog in mijn top 40 gestaan heeft. Het begint met een wat pompeuze orkestratie en geluidsfragmenten van historische gebeurtenissen. Daarna horen we weer bekende MJ-klanken, met wat steviger gezongen coupletten en wat zoetere refreinen. Alleen MJ kan hiermee wegkomen.
Weet iemand hier misschien waarom deze plaat in de NL top 40 11 weken haalde met hoogste plaats 16? Dat is erg ongebruikelijk voor een artiest als MJ. Heeft het te maken met de dubbele A-kant Ghosts? Is dat tijdens de release omgedraaid waardoor als het ware een dubbele notering ontstaan is?

Op 36 een plaat die ik me gelukkig nog wel goed kan herinneren en die ook nog wel gedraaid wordt: Eternal met I wanna be the only one. Het is ook veruit hun grootste hit, met 17 weken en hoogste plaats 3. De dames kregen vocale hulp van Bebe Winans. Het refrein is erg aanstekelijk, en de coupletten ook, dus wat wil je nog meer?
