Radiohead blijft op 1 staan met Karma Police (50 tracks #1, ranboy #2, Dim #4, herman #6, johan de witt #6, musician #7, pureshores #12, vigil #17) en vergroot de voorsprong zelfs. Verder vijf nieuwe binnenkomers, waarvan drie in één keer van 0 punten naar een plek in de top 20: No Doubt met Sunday Morning, The Verve met The Drugs Don’t Work en Eels met Susan’s House. De nieuwe platen in de top 20:

09 | no doubt - sunday morning
De nieuwe single van No Doubt is een soort van vervolg op hun grote hit Don’t Speak. Die hit ging over de ruzie die een einde maakte aan de relatie tussen Gwen Stefani en bassist Tony Kanal. De videoclip zette Gwen Stefani in de spotlights en de rest van de band had een kleinere rol. Sunday Morning gaat over Gwen Stefani die over de break-up heen is en in de videoclip is de hele band te zien en worden ze getoond als een groep vrienden, die samen eten.

13 | the verve - the drugs don’t work
Uitgebracht op de dag na de dood van prinses Diana en in eerste instantie was dit het nummer dat het Engelse publiek omarmde als troostnummer. Tot Elton John een paar dagen later Candle in the Wind speelde tijdens de begrafenis.

15 | eels - susan’s house
Susan is de ex van zanger Mark Oliver Everett. Ondanks dat hun relatie al een tijdje over was, staan er toch twee nummers op het album Beautiful Freak over haar: deze en het nummer met dezelfde naam als het album, dat later dit jaar nog uitgebracht wordt. De pianosample is uit Love Finds Its Own Way van Gladys Knight & The Pips.

19 | gene - speak to me someone
Over dit nummer kan ik weinig informatie vinden. Het spannendste is dat het tot nummer 30 kwam in de Engelse top 75.

20 | chumbawamba – tubthumping
Geïnspireerd door een dronken buurman die zijn best deed om zijn deur te openen, terwijl hij ‘Danny Boy’ aan het zingen was. Dat inspireerde de gitarist van Chumbawamba om er een nummer van te maken over de arbeidersklasse, die vaak naar beneden geduwd wordt, maar altijd weer opstaat. De titel staat voor politiek protest, formeel ‘het luid en agressief uiten van een mening’.

Zelfs met 11 weken blijft The Verve nog op 1 staan, maar met The freshman van 5 naar 2 lijkt het pleit nu wel beslecht.

Op 23 komt zomaar Finley Quaye binnen, met een apart stemgeluid en een aanstekelijk gitaarriffje. Finley is een Schot, en dit is zijn direct succesvolle debuut. Helaas zal hij niet nog groter worden, maar gaat nog wel een tijdje op deze voet door.

Op 25 een veel bekendere naam, Fleetwood Mac, met Silver springs, een door Stevie Nicks geschreven en gezongen lied. Oorspronkelijk was dit de achterkant van Go your own way uit 1977, maar in 1997 werd een liveversie uitgebracht om The dance te promoten. Uiteraard is dit vintage-FM, met een (slide?)gitaarsolo en sterke vocalen.

The Verve flikt wat Radiohead pas ook nog lukte: op 1 staan en al een nieuwe single in de lijst krijgen. Op 33 komt The drugs don't work binnen. Deze klinkt totaal anders dan Bittersweet symphony, met een sombere tekst en dito mineurbegeleiding; er schuilt veel melancholie in deze song, en al scoort hij commercieel niet zo hoog, hij doet zeker niet onder voor zijn voorganger.

Als hekkensluiter Cake met Frank Sinatra (zulke titels doen het altijd goed in popquizzen). Voor mij blijft The distance toch altijd wel met afstand (pun intended) hun beste song, in hun andere liedjes lijken ze zichzelf niet erg serieus te nemen en moet ik dat dan wel doen? Frank Sinatra hangt daar een beetje tussenin, eigenlijk weet ik niet zo goed wat ik ermee moet, maar vervelend is het niet.

Ik moest gisteren naar België in verband met een grote tweedehands markt vandaag. Afgezien dat ik dan op jacht kan naar goedkope singles kan mevrouw musician zich richten op het kopen van andere nuttige zaken, het is niet alleen een markt maar ook tegelijkertijd een jaarlijks terugkerend feest.

Enfin, ik heb dus gisteren mooi geen lijst kunnen plaatsen en dat was maar goed, omdat vigil mij daarmee heeft geholpen aan de nieuwe single van de Jayhawks.

Je hebt in de regel singles die lekker weg luisteren, zoals de nieuwe van Denim. Maar je hebt toch ook het wat serieuzere werk en dan kom je terecht bij de Jayhawks, een prima Geneva en een uitmuntende Third Eye Blind.

En voor het overige gaan alles en iedereen lekker langzaam naar boven. Ik kan mij dat tempo wel voorstellen. Het is eigenlijk veel te warm. Alleen Anouk blijkt er weinig last van te hebben.

week 26 voor 1996 waarin geen niet verrassend Echobelly naar 1 stijgt maar die wordt wel meteen bedreigt door de hoogste binnenkomer.6 binnenkomers in totaal, redelijk netjes verdeeld over de lijst.
Na 2 albums met Belly vond Tanya Donelly de tijd rijp om onder eigen naam muziek te maken. Dat de muziek niet veel van Belly afwijkt zal niemand verbazen. Na de EP Sliding & Diving van 1996 komt nu de echt eerste single van het debuutsoloalbum: Pretty Deep. Het succes bleef wel achter bij dat van Belly.
The Cardigans komen met de opvolger van doorbraakhit Love Fool, Your New Cuckoo is helemaal Cardigans maar mist net iets om ook een hit te worden, of Hilversum had al besloten dat Cardigans een prima eendagsvlieg zou zijn, dat kan ook.
Sneaker Pimps kende ik voor 2000 nog niet maar nu hebben ze al hun 5e notering bij mij, allemaal van hetzelfde album. Niet zo gek dat dat album inmiddels de top 100 allertijden bij mij heeft bereikt.
Foo Fighters kende ik wel maar ik dacht dat ik er niet zoveel aan vond. Dat is later aardig bijgetrokken. Ook Everlong is een prima nummer.
Tonic is wel een bekende naam, opvallende album hoes, maar verder? Dit nummer heeft een hoog Live gehalte, vergelijkbare opbouw en zelfs de stem heeft wel wat gelijkenis.
Cornershop met hun ode aan de 7" single, niet de remix maar het origineel, wel lastig om die remix er niet stiekem in te horen.

nieuw:
Bittersweet Symphony was natuurlijk de grote hit van Urban Hymns, maar eigenlijk vind ik de latere singles van dat album veel beter. The Drugs Don't Work is buitencategorie, schitterend als je als 20-er dit soort doorleefde songs kunt schrijven.

Nu metal is niet echt mijn ding, nooit geweest ook. Maar soms zit er wel een lekker nummer tussen. Deze song van Guano Apes altijd wel tof gevonden. Ook een beetje sentiment, doet me denken aan de studentendisco waar dit altijd gedraaid werd.

Bowie's Seven Years in Tibet heeft niks te maken met de gelijknamige film uit hetzelfde jaar voor zover ik weet. Verder wel een prima single, maar niet veel meer dan dat. Als ik al Bowie's 90s singles op een rijtje zet, dan vind ik dit wel een van de minste.

Mulu's Pussycat zei me helemaal niets, maar toen ik hem hoorde was het gelijk een feest van herkenning. Typisch zo'n vergeten nummer. Mooi opgedoken via de lijst van ranboy.

Qua dance is er uiteraard ruimte voor de nieuwe Chemical Brothers, maar ook voor Bentley Rhythm Ace, een gezelschap met o.a. links naar Pop Will Eat Itself en EMF. Deze single heb ik altijd wel leuk gevonden.

vigil Ik zie bij jou Stephen Duffy met Duffy binnenkomen. Weet je zeker dat het nummer zo heet? Ik kan het niet vinden, kan uiteraard aan mij liggen. Ik had zelf "17" op mijn playlist staan. Wellicht bedoel je die?

Twee artiesten uit de jaren '60 bij de nieuwe binnenkomers boven aan. De Rolling Stones mogen dan wel eens mindere albums hebben. De single keuze is in de regel prima.
Joe Cocker heeft een klein pareltje opgenomen en ook de tekst is weer eens alleraardigst.
De artiesten van de sixties gaan naar boven de 50 en dat werd toen als stokoud ervaren..

Creed, Live en zelfs dit keer ook Green Day moeten allemaal even los komen maar zijn dan weer ouderwets op dreef.

week 37 voor 1997 waarin een spannende strijd tussen 2 topfavorieten gaande is, Echobelly en Tanya Donelly op 1 en 2. Dat zal wel even zo blijven maar in welke volgorde? De 5 binnenkomers zullen zich daar in elk geval niet in gaan mengen.
The Sundays scoorden met hun eerste album een paar hitjes bij mij, het 2e album heb ik destijds niks van meegekregen maar nu is het tijd om het 3e album alsnog te ontdekken. Eerste single Summertime wijkt al weinig af van wat ik van hun ken dus dat zit wel goed.
Dit nummer van Sarah McLachlan leerde ik kennen via Songpop waar het regelmatig voorbijkwam, altijd het stukje vanaf 0.50 dus gek om nu een ander begin te horen. Het nummer zit muzikaal ergens tussen Jewel en Joan Osbourne.
Radish klinkt als een kruising tussen Nirvana en Buffalo Tom, het komt van hun enige officiele album (nou ja eerste 2 waren eigen beheer), klinkt wel erg interessant
Van Sunscreem kende ik lange tijd alleen de single Broken English, na het ontdekken dat het debuutalbum O3 erg goed is (en zelfs een origineel van een hit van Paul Elstak bevat) ontdek ik ook de latere muziek van de band. Catch is een single waarvan het bijbehorende albums niet uitkwam vanwege het failliet gaan van hun label. Muzikaal schuiven ze iets op richting St Etienne.
Het nummer van Symposium is wel bijzonder, begint als een epitaph skapunk bandje en schuift muzikaal steeds meer op richting richting Sugar/Hüsker Dü al blijft de zang wel erg aan Offspring/Green Day doen denken.

Eindelijk moet The Verve de eerste plek opgeven, en de opvolger is van ... The Verve Pipe.

Zoals in onze tijd net Koningin Elisabeth is overleden, zo was precies 25 jaar geleden prinses Diana bij een auto-ongeluk om het leven gekomen. En het was toen vanzelfsprekend dat Elton John de afscheidsode opnam. Hiervoor kon hij goed Candle in the wind gebruiken, oorspronkelijk voor Marilyn Monroe geschreven, maar met een nieuwe tekst paste het helemaal bij Princess Di. Een artistiek hoogtepunt kunnen we dit niet noemen, maar het was precies de juiste song op het juiste moment, en als ik mij niet vergis, is dit tot op heden de best verkochte song in de UK. Ook in NL zou deze versie langdurig op 1 staan, maar later zouden we hem vrijwel nooit meer horen.

Wel bijzonder artistiek uiteraard is de bijdrage van Björk met Joga, waarin ze opnieuw dance beats combineert met klassieke vioolarrangementen, en daaroverheen haar raadselachtige teksten declameert. Dat klinkt in deze tijd nog aansprekend genoeg, het wist zelfs nog de NL tipparade te halen. Maar dit was ook meteen haar laatste commerciële succes.

Als de Golden Earring nog een aardige hit kan scoren met Burning stuntman, dan moeten wij dat ook kunnen, dachten The Rolling Stones, en voegden de daad bij het woord met Anybody seen my baby? Al snel werd duidelijk dat het refrein gelijkenis vertoonde met Constant craving van k.d. lang van 5 jaar eerder, en al beweerden de componisten dat ze die song niet kenden, gaven ze toch ook credits voor hun song aan k.d. lang en medecomponist Ben Mink. Ondertussen werd het wel een flink succes voor de heren.

Misschien even schrikken (ook voor mijzelf) maar De Kast scoorde ook in mijn top 40 met In nije dei, een live opgenomen versie van hun song. Door het meezingen van het publiek is het ook behoorlijk sfeervol, slecht is het zeker niet. Je moet het alleen niet te veel horen. Ter geruststelling: dit is ook hun laatste entry in mijn lijst.

Op 37 vinden we één van de 31 (!) entry's van de Foo Fighters in mijn top 40, Everlong. Hoewel dit zou uitgroeien tot een van hun meest geliefde songs, is het destijds toch behoorlijk langs mij heen gegaan, want erg ver gaat hij niet komen. Dat had dus wel wat hoger gemogen, maar ja, afhankelijk van airplay heb je niet alles in de hand.

De zesde nieuwe staat op 38 en is van Life of Agony, een hardrockband uit New York, die nu al 30 jaar actief is (met onderbrekingen). Weeds klinkt wel stevig, maar goed te verteren, eigenlijk weer typisch jaren 90.

Volgens mij heb ik het ook pas in 1999 ontdekt, denk niet dat het eerder al gedraaid werd. Maar in die tijd luisterde ik alleen naar Kink FM. Dit was misschien iets meer muziek voor TMF/The Box, wat wij niet konden ontvangen. Wel leuk dat het een top 40-hit is geweest, daar had ik geen idee van.

Door Bjork's Jóga denk ik er ineens weer aan dat ik in 1997 een soort last.fm avant la lettre had. Destijds heb ik een jaar lang in een schriftje bijgehouden welke cd's ik allemaal draaide en hoe vaak. Björk's Homogenic vond ik meteen helemaal geweldig, volgens mij draaide ik hem alleen in de week dat ik hem kocht al meer dan 20 keer. Dat soort aantallen heb ik in het download- en later streamingtijdperk nooit meer gehaald volgens mij. Het blijft een fantastische plaat en Jóga een geweldige gedurfde single. Door dit topic duik ik soms ook (opnieuw) in de b-kanten van mijn favoriete artiesten en bij Björk kan ik mijn hart ophalen zie ik, de Homogenic singles hebben samen ruim 3 uur aan verschillende b-kanten.

Imani Coppola brengt typische 90's sample pop. 60's kenners zullen hierin al snel Donovan herkennen, maar Imani heeft er haar eigen draai aangegeven en een fris nieuw popnummer van gemaakt. Deze debuutsingle was gelijk ook haar enige echte wapenfeit als het op hits aankomt.

Stereolab is een geliefde band, maar op de een of andere manier is Miss Modular -hoe fijn het ook klinkt- geen nummer dat echt blijft hangen. Daarom voor hun doen een bescheiden binnenkomst.

Eels was destijds een hele grote favoriet, ik heb alle singles uit deze periode en dan ook nog eens alle verschillende versies. De b-kanten zou ik nu niet meer kunnen reproduceren, want mijn interesse in Eels is eigenlijk al 20 jaar geleden verdwenen. De b-kanten waren ook zeker niet van het niveau als Susan's House, een van hun betere singles. Maar waar dit destijds een geheide kandidaat voor #1 zou zijn, zou het linkerrijtje nu al een geweldige prestatie zijn.

The Beta Band's Dry The Rain heb ik pas veel later leren kennen. De eerste van de befaamde 'Three EP's' en pas bij de tweede kreeg ik ze in het vizier. Mooi meeslepend nummer, ook bekend van een platenzaakscene uit de film High Fidelity:

Met de prins van de R'nB als lijstaanvoerder is de stugge top 5 nu eindelijk uit elkaar aan het vallen, daar helpt een weg naar de hel niet naar.
Mick & co doen een verwoede poging en mogen meteen op 10 binnen komen, deze Stones single heeft mij altijd prima vermaakt, alleen al door de creepy video.

Around the world is dan de voortrekker van Homework, de opvolger is weer meer rechttoe rechtaan clubwerk en brandt zich lekker in je genots/irritatie zone, alleen een harde riff moet hier voor herkenning zorgen.

Air komt bij mij altijd wat later door, al bij meerderen weken genoteerd, maar nu wil ik dit nazomerzonnetje ook meepakken.
En All Saints debuteren ook, mijn ultieme girlband guilty pleasure waar niks guilty aan is.

Dan onderin nog wat drukte, deze week 7 new entries maar liefst waardoor de entries van vorige week even wat passen op de plaats maken met kleine beweging, The Verve alom bekend, SWV doet het met Puffy en Ce Ce Peniston gaat in een handschoengladde remix.

Mariah Carey stijgt dus maar 2 plaatsen en dat was al een popdame die een ommezwaai maakt, volgende week krijgen we een andere grote popdame die in de top 5 binnen gaat komen met een vernieuwd geluid.

Een heel rijtje met bekende namen bij de nieuwe binnenkomers.
Blij uiteraard met de terugkeer van Patti Smith en Dinosaur jr.
Bij Dinosaur jr. weet je altijd wat je hebt. Bij Patti Smith ook wel maar ze is hier opvallend, alleraardigst ook, op de M.O.R. tour.

Blur heeft daar nog een aardig nummer over gemaakt, zonder uiteraard zelf M.O.R. te worden.

De meest bizarre muziek komt van Monaco en vooral de Pastels. Ik weet niet of ze het lang gaan redden. Maar ik wilde het wel een kans geven.
Volgende week zie ik nog meer bekende namen zich aandienen.

Voor de liefhebbers heb ik nog, ik zie het bij niemand verschijnen en ik weet dat er liefhebbers zijn, het nummer 586 van New Order. Volgens de verhalen is het op 15 september verschenen. Alleen is het aan mij niet besteed
