Meestal zie ik wel aankomen welk nummer op 1 komt te staan, maar dit keer niet. In de achtste week, na eerst twee weken te zijn blijven steken op 4 en vervolgens nog eens twee weken op 3, is het Bran Van 3000 met Drinking in LA (Dim #2, 50tracks #2, herman #3, johan de witt #8, pureshores #15).

Weer het gebruikelijke aantal van 5 binnenkomers, maar wel bijzonder dat de hoogste twee op 11 en 12 staan. Op 11 is dat pas de tweede entry van The Tea Party, met Temptation. De hoge binnenkomst wijst erop dat dit een direct overrompelende plaat is, wat voor een groot deel op het conto van zanger Jeff Martin komt, die met zijn gepassioneerde strot elk liedje urgentie meegeeft. Daarnaast is het een opmerkelijk vlot liedje dat bijna wel een hit had kunnen worden (en in ieder geval de radiozenders gehaald heeft). Deze hoge binnenkomst wordt hierna niet echt verzilverd, waarschijnlijk doordat het liedje ook niet al te veel airplay gekregen heeft.

Ook Chumbawamba komt hoog binnen, met hun enige hit in de NL top 40, die ook wel een klassieker is geworden: Tubthumping. Het is een opvallende song met een strijdbaar refrein, een zangeres die beschaafd Pissing the night away zingt, een rapper die soorten drank opsomt en swingende instrumentale stukken, en dit geheel wordt dan een paar keer herhaald, zonder dat het zich ontwikkelt. Tubthumping komt overigens van het oude gebruik om op een markt of zo op een tobbe te gaan staan en je eigen mening luid te verkondigen.

En wie komen daar op 23 binnen? Mijn op een na meest favoriete band Genesis, met de eerste single van hun laatste studioalbum Calling all stations. Met een nieuwe zanger: Ray Wilson, die vooral bekend was als zanger van de band Stiltkin en hun grote hit Inside. Het is een goeie zanger, maar fans hebben toch wel moeite met deze onverwachte gast. Album en songs ademen wel degelijk Genesis-sfeer uit, dankzij uiteraard Mike Rutherford en Tony Banks, maar echte hits staan er niet op. Dat is toch wel een teleurstellend einde van een bijna 30-jarige carrière.

Op 30 alweer een nieuwe Live, Turn my head, een midtempo-ballad, met wat extra violen, maar verder vooral degelijk vertrouwd materiaal.

Als laatste binnenkomer vinden we George Michael, die al vaker in rustig vaarwater belandde, maar op You have been loved helemaal in de sophisticated easy listening-sfeer belandt. Het is allemaal mooi en smaakvol, maar nergens opwindend of zelfs boeiend (voor mij). Zijn stem blijft van goud, maar ook dat is op deze single nauwelijks te horen.

En die van The Tea Party is ook erg lekker. Vlot nummer wat inderdaad best een hitje had kunnen worden, maar had de tijd waarschijnlijk niet mee, althans wat de hitlijsten betreft.

week 38 voor 1997 waarin No Doubt in het gaatje sprint dat na de top 2 ontstaat. Overigens zag ik deze week dat deze single ook in de tipparade binnenkwam, dat had ik niet verwacht.
Verder 5 binnenkomers.
Helen Love, zelf verklaard grootste Ramones fans uit Wales komen met een van hun meest harde en springerige nummers. Complete electro/twee/punk gekte, heerlijk.
Nog een nummer waarvan ik weinig bijval verwacht, Clawfinger uit Zweden met een nummer dat weinig verrast maar wel gewoon goed is. Rap en metal, zonder de nu-metal emo erbij, gewoon lekker hard.
De kennismaking met All Saints ging via deze clip, dat hielp wel mee, altijd wel een zwak voor met name dit nummer gehad en gehouden.
Beck met een minder bekende single van Odelay, de singleversie een Butch Vig remix blijkbaar. Voor Beck's doen een redelijk recht toe recht aan single - tot de laatste halve minuut dan.
Stereolab werd eind jaren 90 ook wel met easy tune geassocieerd en op deze single laten ze ook wel horen waarom (begin jaren 90 was het nog shoegaze en begin 00s ineens electroclash, je kunt alle kanten met de band op).

No Doubt komt deze week wel binnen in de Tipparade, maar dan met Spiderwebs.

Oh, dat was me niet opgevallen dat het een ander nummer is
Eens kijken wat ik daar dan weer mee ga doen volgende week.

Leuk dat Bran Van 3000 de nummer 1 positie heeft gehaald in de gezamenlijke lijst. Had ik ook niet aan zien komen.

En jammer dat de singleversie van Beck's Jackass niet op Spotify staat. Nooit geweten dat dit een mix van Butch Vig is. Dit is ook de versie die destijds op de radio kwam.

Bovenin zit het redelijk vast, al schuift The Verve langzaam naar de allerhoogste regionen. Verder zie ik nu pas dat Radiohead, Portishead en Pigeonhed precies achter elkaar komen, dat was niet gepland.

Hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer komt meteen na dat rijtje, U2's Please. Erg fraai nummer en ik geloof niet dat er nog een betere single van U2 zal komen.

Graduate kende ik wel, maar had even gemist dat deze van Third Eye Blind was. Erg leuk aanstekelijk nummer, beetje een mix tussen altrock en power pop.

Portishead's All Mine is de opvolger van Cowboys, al is Cowboys destijds wat langs me heen gegaan en voelt All Mine als de leadsingle van het tweede Portishead-album. Mooie dramatische track, weer heel anders dan de sound van Dummy.

De singles van Eels vallen als rijpe appelen van de boom, vorige week kwam Susan's House dan eindelijk binnen, nu Your Lucky Day In Hell en dan zag ik ook Rags to Rags al langskomen en die mag eigenlijk ook niet ontbreken. De releasedata vind ik ook wel lastig te bepalen, elke bron geeft weer wat anders aan (volgens Wikipedia zouden ze allemaal in 1996 zijn uitgebracht zelfs). Ik zal volgende week mijn eigen charts van destijds er maar weer eens op naslaan.

Angelica heb ik de afgelopen maanden vaak gedraaid, maar omdat nummers die alleen op YouTube staan vaak onder mijn radar blijven, komen die niet zo snel binnen. Nu dan alsnog, erg leuk nummer en ook een grappig outro van een verliefde fan op het antwoordapparaat.

Daft Punk had wat geniale singles, maar Burnin' is toch wel wat minder, al blijft die sirene en de teruglopende baslijn leuk.

Bran van 3000 heeft het maar één week volgehouden op nummer 1, want deze week is het The Verve, met The Drugs Don’t Work (vigil #1, 50tracks #1, herman #4, johan de witt #5, AngeloV#8, Dim #16). Verder hadden we bijna een mooie tip 20, met precies de helft nieuwe nummers, netjes op een rij van 11 t/m 20. Maart helaas, Jesus Jones staat er tussen met een re-entry. Niet helaas voor het nummer natuurlijk, maar meer voor het oog. En ja: opnieuw binnenkomen kan als een plaat minstens 4 weken verdwenen was en niet in de top 20 stond. Tenzij dat weer te lang geleden is en ik dat over het hoofd zie.

De vierde single van Homework is een hommage aan Chicago House. De clip voor het nummer is ook in Chicago opgenomen en daarin zie je een paar grote namen, zoals Roger Sanchez, Paul Johnson en Robert Armani. Net als de heren van Daft Punk zelf overigens, maar dan wel met zonnebril en pruik op.

Week 39

Uit het lijstje van pureshores plukte ik Adam F - ontiegelijk lang niet gehoord, maar het album Colours draaide ik indertijd best vaak. En bij 50tracks zag ik Marcy Playground, voor mij zo'n typisch 3FM-plaatje met semi-ongeinteresseerde zang.

Ik moet toch mijn mening nog eens herzien over het Pop album van U2. Volgens mij is dit weer een volgend uitstekend nummer van dat album. Of ze hebben een goede hand van singles kiezen. Hoe dan ook, de band draait dit jaar super, in ieder geval voor wat betreft het muzikale aanbod. Het album zal ook alleraardigst hebben verkocht.

Maar ik was net nog even meer onder de indruk van Radiohead. Ook uiteraard een beroemd album uitgebracht dit jaar. Climbing up the walls is als 12" uitgebracht in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.
Oasis heeft natuurlijk ook een logische entree.
Fleetwood Mac heeft alweer een opvolger voor Silver Springs. In de meest beruchte opstelling van de band ooit, de Rumours line up, is dit één van de laatste nieuwe songs van de band. Er volgt nog het album Say you will maar dat is zonder Christine McVie. Dat maakt Temporary One eerlijk gezegd wel bijzonder.

Weer 5 nieuwe deze week. Op 23 Oasis met Stand by me, waarop ze hun eigen geluid zo precies navolgen dat het wat voorspelbaar wordt, met die viooltjes, dat All the yound dudes motiefje, en ook nog uitgerekt tot 6 minuten. Duidelijk een band die geen progressie meer maakt. Maar nog net wel de NL top 40 haalt.

Een band die ook tientallen singles uitbracht zonder veel ontwikkeling in de sound, is Van Dik Hout. Maar aardig klinkt het altijd wel De zon achterna is wat lichter van toon, wat optimistischer, en heeft toch wel een apart gitaarmotiefje in de solo.

Portishead komt op 34 binnen met All mine, dat zwaar en meeslepend klinkt met James Bond-achtige orkestratie en spookachtig bezwerende vocalen. De tekst lijkt ook wat obsessief-possessief (sorry). Het maakt nog steeds een sterke indruk.

Op 36 vinden we Beck met Jack-ass, een song die ik totaal vergeten was. In plaats van een drukke heftige rock song (wat ik op basis van de titel verwachtte), is het juist een relaxed zonnig melodietje met warme vocalen. Pas na 3 minuten horen we toch wat meer de typische Beck-sound.

En als laatste het Drentse Skik, met hun bekendste song Op fietse. Opgestuwd door een vrolijke mondharmonica wordt verteld over de fietstochten die je in Drenthe kan maken, waarbij heel wat plaatsnamen de revue passeren. Het was de doorbraak voor de band, en hun eerste (van twee) en grootste NL top 40 hit.

week 39 voor 1997 waar Echobelly stand houdt maar Tanya ook, en er bedreiging bij lijkt te komen van de hoogste binnenkomer (en dan noem ik die van volgende week nog niet...) Het gaat spannend worden de komende weken. Deze week 5 binnenkomers.

nieuw:
- Modest Mouse is zo'n band die destijds redelijk langs me heen is gegaan, maar de laatste jaren heb ik er wel e.e.a. van opgepikt. Deze single is ook weer erg fijn. Duidelijke Amerikaanse gitaarsound met verbeten zang, wel iets voor liefhebbers van Built to Spill, Sebadoh, Pavement, etc.
- Love Spit Love is de band waarin de zanger van de Psychedelic Furs mee verder ging toen die band ermee ophield. Op de een of andere manier heb ik hun voorgaande singles gemist (dit is hun laatste...).
- Ocean Colour Scene vond ik toen best leuk, maar deze single was ik compleet vergeten. Toch best een leuk nummer, al is het lang geen Hundred Mile High City.
- Ook leuk is Mariah Carey, zolang ze geen ballads zingt. Honey is wel een lekker frisse popdeun. Wel een van haar laatste geloof ik, hierna werd het er niet beter op.

De eerste single van Bridges to Babylon met in de videoclip een hoofdrol voor Angelina Jolie. Omdat het refrein lijkt op Constant Craving van K.D. Lang staat zij ook als schrijver genoteerd voor dit nummer. Met dank aan de dochter van Keith Richards, die de overeenkomst opviel. Het is de enige hit van The Rolling Stones waarin een sample zit, namelijk A One Two van Biz Markie.

17 | björk – jóga
Een ode aan IJsland, maar vernoemd naar de beste vriendin van Björk. Natuurlijk werd het een nummer-1 hit in IJsland.

18 | oasis - stand by me
Dit nummer is veroorzaakt door de moeder van Noel Gallagher. Toen Noel net verhuisd was naar London werd hij vaak gebeld door zijn moeder, die zich zorgen maakte of hij wel goed at. Natuurlijk luisterde hij naar zijn moeder en hij besloot eens goed voor zichzelf te koken. Het was geen succes en hij liep een voedselvergiftiging op. En zo was de eerste zin van dit nummer geboren: “Made a meal and threw it up on Sunday”.

20 | u2 – please
U2 zingt over het conflict in Noord-Ierland, specifiek over de Docklands Bombing in het financiële district van Londen in februari 1996, toen de IRA een vrachtwagen vol explosieven liet ontploffen. Vandaar ook de zin “shards of glass splinters like rain”. En de hoes geeft het natuurlijk ook weg, met de hoofden van vier Noord-Ierse politici erop.

Weer heel erg veel alleraardigste nieuwe singles deze week. Je krijgt het nauwelijks nog bij elkaar in één lijst.
Maar de leukste ontdekking van dit jaar blijft voor mij voorlopig Supergrass. Ook de nieuwe single steekt weer boven de rest uit.
Opmerkelijk detail bij de laatste binnenkomers: ze beginnen allemaal met een vrij rustig intro. Het zal de tijd van het jaar wel wezen.
