Op zijn zestiende werd Roni Size van school gestuurd en begon hij naar feestjes van The Wild Buch, later bekend als Massive Attack, te gaan. Die ervaring, gecombineerd met wat hij over produceren leerde bij zijn lokale jeugdclub en de platen van zijn broer die hij kon samplen, begon hij zelf muziek te maken. Dat leidde in 1997 tot New Forms, een album dat erg succesvol werd. Op dat album en ook op dit nummer gebruikte hij samples, maar samples die hij en anderen zelf ingespeeld hadden. Dat zorgde voor een ander drum ’n bass geluid dan gebruikelijk in die tijd, wat misschien wel bijdroeg aan het succes.

De single van het jaar bij de Brit Awards, waarbij ze Bitter Sweet Symphony van The Verve, Song 2 van Blur, Paranoid Android van Radiohead en Candle in the Wind 1997 van Elton John versloegen. Het nummer is gebaseerd op de relatie van zangeres Shaznay Lewis die uit ging en is ook geschreven door haar, zoals zij de meeste nummers van de All Saints (mede) schreef.

Speciaal geschreven door de Propellerheads met Shirley Bassey in gedachten en uiteindelijk ook door haar gezongen. Ik moest het even controleren, maar Shirley Bassey treedt met haar 85 jaar nog steeds af en toe op. Twee maanden geleden zong ze nog Diamonds are Forever en Goldfinger op The Sound of 007: Live from the Royal Albert Hall.

Nog op de valreep de laatste lijst van 1997 (altijd gedateerd op de woensdag), waarin Vaderland omhoog schiet naar 1, terecht, maar ook omdat de vorige nummer 1 al ver over zijn tijd was.

En ook tussen Kerst en Oud en Nieuw heb ik toen nog vier binnenkomers kunnen vinden, waarvan twee nog veel gedraaid worden. Op 25 komt de Australische Natalie Imbruglia binnen met superhit Torn, zoals bekend een cover van het Amerikaanse Ednaswap. Natalie was toen al bekend als actrice, met name door haar rol in soapserie Neighbours. Torn is een erg aanstekelijke single, maar ik vind het moeilijk er wat omschrijving bij te geven, de sound is wel erg algemeen en eh... non-descript.

Op 27 komt ook Robbie Williams binnen, die op dat moment een wat moeizame solocarrière had, met singles die het steeds minder goed deden. Met Angels komt wel de ommekeer, het wordt een grote hit en Robbies naam was gevestigd. De song is ook tekenend voor de helft van zijn hits: een ballad met veel violen, mooi gezongen, geschikt voor alle leeftijden.

Op 31 de derde hit op rij van Gala, de Italiaans-Amerikaanse zangeres, Come into my life. De song was minder uitbundig dansbaar, niet zo aanstekelijk en ook schieten haar zangkwaliteiten nu wat duidelijker te kort. Maar het is nog interessant genoeg om een notering te verdienen.

Op 35 komt dan ook nog Faithless binnen, de band van de nog pas gestorven Maxi Jazz, maar deze Don't leave bevat geen vocals van hem, maar van Jamie Catto, ook bandlid. De sound is ook totaal anders dan van de grote hits, het is een gevoelige ballad, met dankzij de koortjes wat lichte gospelinvloeden. Ik begreep recent dat dit al twee jaar oud is en toen ook een single geweest is, maar op dit moment werd het gere-released vanwege de film A life less ordinary, en werd het ook een groter succes in de lijsten dan de eerste keer.

Dan wens ik iedereen nog een gezond en gelukkig 1998! Eh... 2023!

Natuurlijk plaats ik ook nog mijn top 100 van 1997. Zoals altijd met opmerking, dat songs die in 1996 al binnenkwamen, niet in deze lijst voorkomen, en songs die eind 1997 binnenkwamen, hun volledige puntenaantal krijgen, zoals bijvoorbeeld Given to fly met (op dit moment) 2 weken notering, en toch in de top 10 van het jaar.

Er ligt heel wat moois in het verschiet, in de komende weken van 1998. Een beter gelukkig nieuw jaar kun je niet wensen!

En dat begint deze week al gelijk met World Party, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Rialto en de Golden Earring. Dan kan het bijna niet mis gaan.
Chumbawamba zal wel even wennen zijn, in de komende weken, is in ieder geval de grote onbekende.

Ik begrijp dat de Golden Earring een live cd-single hebben uitgebracht van The Devil Made me do it (oorspronkelijk van het Cut album, kwam als studio single eind '82 binnen). Ik zie dat het 4:40 duurt en ik kan het niet vinden op youtube. Wel een andere interessante live-uitvoering en die heb ik maar geplaatst. Het is een beetje smokkelen binnen de marge maar als de goede live uitvoering is te achterhalen hou ik mij aanbevolen.

Allereerst de beste wensen allemaal

musician het gaat zoals je gezien zult hebben om de live versie van Unplugged II. Deze edit is inderdaad niet terug te vinden in een 4:40 versie. Ik denk overigens dat ze de lange album versie gewoon hebben weggedraaid want deze album versie kent een ellenlang instrumentaal einde.

Tja nooit de sprong naar de top 20 gemaakt, dat krijg je er van

week 1 voor 1997, langzaam beginnetje. paar oudere nummers van 1997 er uit gewerkt en 5 binnenkomers. Natalie houdt nog stand op 1 maar Nilsson begint wel aan te dringen.
Gala als hoogste binnen, die had ik vorige week bewust nog even laten wachten. Lang geen Freed from Desire maar toch best ok.
Paula Cole kwam ik nog in de US lijst tegen, binnengekomen op 1-11, dus vooruit. Zonde om te missen, gewoon prima singer-songwriter liedje.
Pearl Jam hoor ik liever rockend maar deze kan er best meer door
Clarika zag ik in de franse charts, ik heb het album waar dit nummer op staat. Vrij onbekend gebleven zangeres.
Corrs dan nog met een typische Corrs song, die gaan wel met meer nummers mijn lijst halen, dit is de eerste.
