Nog even mijn jaarlijst droppen, nu wel al een paar dagen in het nieuwe jaar zitten. Ik tel alleen de punten van mijn top 20 en vermeld alleen de nummers die in 1998 zijn binnengekomen. Nummers met een * staan nog genoteerd.

Week 3 van het afgelopen jaar was een bijzondere, waarin liefst 4 nummers in de top 10 binnenkwamen. 3 van die nummers zijn uiteindelijk in de top 10 beland. Little Wonder net aan, maar Da Funk en Your Woman op 2 en 1. Die laatste is ook gevoelsmatig de terechte nummer 1: ik heb er goede herinneringen aan uit de lente van 1997.

De albums die ik toen veel luisterde komen ook hier terug: Homogenic, Earthling, Urban Hymns, OK Computer. Verder kwam een van mijn favoriete bands aller tijden om de hoek kijken: Belle and Sebastian. Destijds ontdekte ik ze in 1998, nu was ik er iets eerder bij. Maar dat is alleen maar goed, want dit zijn hun absolute topjaren. Aan de andere kant waren er dan weer dikke one-hit-wonders zoals White Town, Forest For The Trees en Bran van 3000 (al zou ik daar een paar jaar later nog een ander nummer van ontdekken).

Nummers die ik echt pas dit jaar heb ontdekt waren er natuurlijk ook, al moet ik daar wel een stukje voor scrollen. Ik dacht Third-Eye-Blind alleen te kennen van Semi-Charmed Life, maar Graduate deed ergens toch wel een belletje rinkelen. Afgelopen jaar heb ik die dan wel helemaal ontdekt en vooralsnog vind ik hem leuker dan S-CL. Op 54, 56 en 59 staan de volgende ontdekkingen.

Verder opvallend vind ik wel dat Gorky's Zygotic Mynci's Young Girls & Happy Endings 13 weken in de top 20 stond, maar niet de top 10 wist te halen. Daarentegen haalde U2's Discotheque de eerste plek, maar was die na 9 weken al uit de top 20 verdwenen. In onderstaande lijst staan ze niet eens zover uit elkaar.

De vijfde single van Pop, die ook gebruikt werd in de film City Of Angels (nee, niet gaan kijken, verschrikkelijke film). Het nummer gaat over een gelovige die boos is dat god niet ingrijpt bij allerlei narigheid.

De remix van Amerikaanse Jason Nevins groeide uit van een hit in de clubs naar een wereldhit, behalve dan in de Verenigde Staten. Dat haalt hij later in zijn thuisland in met niet alleen remixen, maar ook als schrijver en producer. Volgens Wikipedia heeft hij 37 top 10 hits gehad in de verschillende Billboard lijsten. Dat dus zonder dit nummer, want het haalde ook niet de top 10 in andere Billboardlijsten als de dance-charts of de Hot Rap Songs top 100.

Niet dat het er voor is blijven liggen tot deze week, maar er is heel wat aan stevigheid binnengekomen, met Tool, Faith no More en Hum. Oasis met de gebruikelijke britpop en misschien moet ik Supersub daar ook maar een beetje toe rekenen.

Hum is een wat vreemde eend in de bijt. Feitelijk heet de cd met vier nummers waar Coming home begint, Selections from "Downward is Heavenward", het bijbehorende album. Bejubeld, dat is ook waar. En tegelijkertijd is er tussen 1997 en 2020 geen album van Hum meer verschenen. Het is niet anders, ik heb ook héél goed naar een single van dit album moeten zoeken.

Even een frisse wind door de lijst, al blijft de top 5 aardig overeind. Maar daar gaat volgende week vast verandering in komen gezien de hoge entries van Bernard Butler en Dandy Warhols. Bernard Butler was de gitarist van Suede, maar stapte voor Coming Up uit de band en komt nu met zijn debuutsingle. Destijds vond ik het helemaal geweldig en nu nog steeds. Zo goed heb ik hem daarna helaas nooit meer gehoord, al heeft hij als producer nog wel een behoorlijk cv opgebouwd. Boys Better van Dandy Warhols vind ik nu misschien nog wel leuker dan toen. Deze band heeft toch wel een stuk of 10 geweldige singles uitgebracht en ik denk dat deze wel bij de beste 5 hoort.

Marshall Masters' I Like It Loud is dan een soort guilty pleasure. Een van de betere commerciële gabbertracks wat mij betreft, was vroeger altijd wel tof als deze langskwam in een hardcore-blokje in de disco.

Primal Scream bracht in kleine oplage nog een single uit met op de a-kant een hele fijne remix van Stuka, als albumtrack een van mijn favorieten van Vanishing Point. De remix mag er ook zijn. vooral het stukje "If you play with fire, you're gonna get burned / Some of my friends are gonna die young" klinkt erg goed en onheilspellend.

Rialto met de follow-up van Monday Morning 5:19. Net iets minder goed denk ik, maar wel zo'n beetje hetzelfde geluid. Fijne single.

Boards of Canada heeft zowaar ook een single uit. Aquarius was ooit het nummer waarmee ik ze ontdekte (via een mp3) en ik vond het gelijk tof en intrigerend. Daarna een album van ze beluisterd en er ging een wereld voor me open. Zulke fascinerende elektronische muziek.

Pearl Jam vond ik destijds aanzienlijk toffer dan nu, ik luister er vrijwel nooit meer naar. Yield is het laatste album dat ik echt veel geluisterd heb en deze leadsingle blijft erg goed overeind. Met Even Flow misschien wel mijn favoriete Pearl Jam-single uit de 90s.

Ronnie Richards zegt me helemaal niets, maar hij heeft wel het geluk gehad dat Basement Jaxx een goede dansplaat heeft gemaakt van zijn nummer. Alsof je op een 90s feestje van de big beat- naar de discozaal gaat en van allebei de helft meekrijgt.

She's The One is vooral bekend van Robbie Williams, maar het origineel van World Party is pas echt mooi. Wat een goeie liedjes kon die Karl Wallinger toch schrijven.

Ook in 1998 veel recycle werk, 1 van de veelgevraagde remixers dit jaar wordt Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim die de revamp van Wildchild de charts in jaagt.
Door de aandacht voor Some kind of bliss (die mij bar weinig deed en ik ook niet heb laten meedraaien) was ik vergeten dat rond dezelfde tijd Kylie's samenwerking met Towa Tei uitkwam, die is te leuk om te vergeten dus dan nu met vertraging alsnog.
Speedgarage is de marketing term nog steeds voor alle hippe clubhouse die uit de UK garage scene komt en die van Industry Standard mag er zijn.
En ook bij mij Bernard Butler.

Ik moet er nog inkomen, 1998. Ik heb de lijst zondag wel gemaakt maar hoopte nog op extra binnenkomers, bijvoorbeeld uit de lijst van ranboy maar die is deze week ook laat dus dan nu maar posten. Twee binnenkomers dan maar.
Melys met hun 2e single, nog wat electronischer dan ze later zouden worden, de band uit Wales werd meteen door John Peel omarmd en terecht, gewoon al erg goed. Later werden ze alleen nog veel beter.
Green Day daarentegen heeft hun beste periode, voor mij in elk geval, wel ruim gehad. Hun nieuwste mag er toch in vooral omdat er volop ruimte voor is.

Inderdaad wat verlaat deze eerste lijst van het jaar (5 dagen weg geweest), maar hier is-ie dan! Met Nederlandstalig op 1 (erg zeldzaam bij mij) en Pearl Jam van 11 naar 3.

En weer 5 binnenkomers; de hoogste van good old Paul McCartney op 18 met een fijne maar niet opvallende ballad, een weldaad voor de fans, maar nieuwe aanhangers zal hij er niet mee krijgen. En geen tipparade voor Beautiful night.

Op 32 Oasis met All around the world, waarop ze nog Beatlesker klinken dan ooit tevoren; alleen de zang wijst richting Oasis. Het grote succes gaat nu ook wel afnemen.

Op 34 het debuut (bij mij) van All Saints met Never ever, tevens hun grootste hit (in de NL top 40). De sound heeft veel weg van The Shangri-Las (Past, present and future), maar deze Never ever blijft ook met zijn eigen sound hangen. Het blijft een aanstekelijk liedje.

Op 35 de altijd wat zwartgallige klanken van Marilyn Manson, die nu nog wat industriëler klinkt dan anders.

En op 37 de vreemde, of in ieder geval onbekende eend in de bijt: de band Type of Girl met Cherries in the Snow. Meer dan deze single kan ik zo snel niet op het internet vinden, ik weet niet eens waar ze vandaan komen. Het is een ballad met krachtige zang, naar het eind toe steeds bombastischer, maar ik vind het best lekker om nog eens terug te horen. Misschien een tip voor ranja ?

Het nummer is geschreven door een van de dames van Klymaxx maar de uitvoerende is volgens mij gewoon nederlands (via discogs).
Als ik zo naar de stem luister zou het me niet verbazen als dat een van de dolly dots is...

Zat ook even te zoeken, maar er is nauwelijks iets te vinden over die zangeres inderdaad. v

Verder is de b-kant medegeschreven door Paul Keuzenkamp, die o.a. met Hans Dulfer heeft samengewerkt. En via Hans naar Candy ben je ook zo weer bij Prince. Maar dat zegt verder ook niet zoveel. Ben onderhand wel nieuwsgierig geworden, het nummer is best aardig in ieder geval.

De eerste single van Yield en ook de grootste hit van dat album. Het nummer lijkt wat op Going to California van Led Zeppelin, maar tijdens een benefietconcert in 2005 spelen ze het nummer samen met Robert Plant, dus hij heeft er vast geen groot probleem mee.

07 | bernard butler – stay
De eerste single van van voormalig Suede-lid Bernard Butler. Het thema van het nummer is, misschien toepasselijk, verandering en hoe moeilijk dat is.

16 | u2 – mofo
Vorige week kwam U2 ook al binnen in de top 20 met If God Will Send His Angels en deze week is de opvolger er al. Het nummer gaat over de moeder van Bono, die haar vaders begrafenis stierf aan een bloeding in de hersenen. Voor als je aan een pubquiz mee gaat doen: U2 heeft vier nummers over Bono’s moeder: deze, Iris (Hold Me Close), Tomorrow en, de bekendste, I Will Follow.

Een nieuw jaar, nieuwe bezems en ik ben er even lekker doorheen gegaan. Dan zijn er altijd winnaars en verliezers, veel nieuwe binnenkomers en veel nummers die de deur achter zich dicht kunnen trekken.

Nu kon dat allemaal omdat er nogal wat nieuws is verschenen. En dan zijn er 9 nieuwe binnenkomers waarbij de bovenste twee er echt met kop en schouders boven uit steken. Van Bernard Butler had ik eigenlijk nog niet vaak gehoord, maar ik begrijp dat hij dan ook alleen maar twee solo albums heeft uitgebracht. Eén in 1998, de andere in 1999. Dan heb je elkaar lange tijd niet meer gehoord. Wel heeft hij ook de eerste twee jaar bij Suede gespeeld (1992-1994).

Maar Stay is een geweldig epos, de term klassieker komt in de buurt.
Alleen wordt Butler nog voorgegaan door de nieuwe van de Dandy Warhols. Sorry dames voor de titel maar je kunt er op rekenen dat jonge mannen bands altijd wel een keer komen beweren dat jongens/mannen beter zijn dan meisjes/vrouwen. Bang voor de concurrentie.

De Dandy Warhols zijn daarin niet de eerste. Maar ze hebben misschien wel de allerbeste hit op dat vlak gemaakt.

Dit keer maar weer goed op tijd, zodat anderen er misschien nog wat aan hebben . Met nu al op 1 de ijzersterke single Given to fly, wat helaas wel betekent dat Vaderland al weer het veld moet ruimen.

De hoogste nieuwe is voor The Verve met Lucky man, alweer hun derde hit op rij. Sterker nog, The drugs don't work is juist deze week verdwenen na 19 weken genoteerd te zijn geweest. Er zijn in de 35 jaar dat ik een top 40 heb gemaakt (het is nu al een tijdje een top 20 geworden), maar 4 platen geweest met meer dan 19 weken. Maar goed, Lucky man nu dus. In het gezamenlijke overzicht heeft deze al zijn top bereikt (nummer 1), maar nu kan ik dus de levensduur weer wat rekken (net als bij The drugs don't work). Het is een fraaie ballad met alle Verve-ingrediënten, inclusief een flinke vioolpartij, ook een sterke compositie, maar net iets minder dan de eerste twee singles van dit album.

Op 28 komen de eels binnen met Beautiful freak, het titelnummer en vijfde single van hun huidige album. Het is een lieflijk klinkend liedje waarin de zanger zijn liefde bezingt voor een buitenbeentje. Als single heeft dit weinig gedaan, terwijl het toch fijn en toegankelijk klinkt.

Op 35 debuteert Cornershop met Brimful of asha. Dit betreft niet de originele albumtrack, maar de remix door Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim), die het wat swingender en toegankelijker maakte, waarna het in veel landen een hit werd (nummer 1 in de UK). Met een prominente rol voor de typische lyric 'Everybody needs a bosom for a pillow'.

Op 36 zien we weer het Nederlandse Supersub met zijn britpop-sound, ditmaal met een zeer ouderwetse flavour eroverheen, begin jaren 70 of zoiets. Wel weer prima gezongen.

Of The Rolling Stones in 1998 nog 'relevant' waren weet ik niet, maar met Saint of me maken ze toch weer een sterke single, met vuur gezongen, ditmaal met veel religieuze teksten, maar dan wel weer op zijn Mick Jaggers. Dit is wel hun laatste top 10 hit in mijn lijsten, en ook al hun een na laatste notering. Een NL top 40 hit wordt het (net) niet.

Week 3 van 1998 waarin Nilsson naar 1 stijgt, een nederlandse band op1 was bepaald geen vanzelfsprekendheid in de 90s waar ik toch ook enigzins besmet was met vooroordeel over nederlandse bands. Nilsson vond ik destijds overigens wel meteen goed dus ook in het echt zouden ze zomaar die eerste plaats kunnen hebben behaald in plaats van 25 jaar later.
Vier binnenkomers deze week.
Oasis heeft de clip 2 minuten korter gemaakt tern opzichte van de singleversie blijkbaar. Dan blijft er nog steeds ruim 7 minuten over. Beetje lang, toch viel het nummer me bij beluistering gister erg mee. Tijd voor een herwardering van Oasis van na de eerste 2 albums, ook al na de dikke top 10 die ze vorig jaar bij mij scoorden.
Cornershop stond met hun ode aan de 7" single vorig jaar al genoteerd maar de Cook remix mag natuurlijk een eigen notering krijgen. Voor velen de eerste kennismaking met de band, deze versie.
Ik weet niet hoe ik aan The Mavis's ben gekomen maar ik had ze al in m'n voorbereide lijst staan. Een band uit Australie die qua uiterlijk ergens tussen Korn en Green Day zit maar op dit nummer meer klinkt als de Wannadies op hun poppiest, daarbij ook geholopen door de vrouwelijke 2e stem.
Supersub heb ik uit de lijst van ranboy, op youtube niet te vinden (inmiddels wel), wel op spotify. Beetje een 'oh die' moment toch wel.

Rialto moet de eerste plaats afstaan, maar dat was wel voorzien gezien de stevige concurrentie. Ondertussen stijgt Untouchable ook lekker door, dus ze hoeven niet heel rouwig te zijn. Ik zie trouwens nu pas dat het een voortzetting is van Kinky Machine, een britpopband die in de eerste helft van de 90s wel wat hitjes had, maar nooit echt heel succesvol was (in dit topic zijn ze zelfs nooit voorbij gekomen).

Hoogste nieuwe is voor de eerste solosingle van Ian Brown, en misschien gelijk wel zijn beste. Zijn eerste 3, 4 singles vond ik allemaal erg sterk, daarna ben ik nooit meer zo onder de indruk geweest, al heb ik hem nog wel een paar keer live gezien. Destijds nooit begrepen dat My Star niet veel meer succes had, ik vind het beter dan de meeste singles van het laatste Stone Roses-album bv.

Verder aardig wat dansplaatjes. Brimful of Asha was in het origineel al een grote hit in mijn lijst, maar de remixversie mag ook binnenkomen. Dit nummer brengt me zo weer terug naar mijn eerste studiejaren en de vele uurtjes op de dansvloer. Een fijn opgewekt geluid was dit dan. Goede herinneringen aan.

Joe Smooth is een chicago house veteraan die vooral bekend is van The Promised Land. Dit Universal Nation is muzikaal wat steviger dan eerder werk, het doet me eigenlijk wel een beetje aan het werk van Green Velvet denken. Maar het nummer draait vooral om de gesamplede speech van Martin L. King uit 1965. Ook bijna 60 jaar later nog altijd indrukwekkend om te horen, en actueel:
"What we are facing today is the fact that through our scientific and technological genius we've made of this world a neighborhood. And now through our moral and ethical commitment we must make of it a brotherhood. We must all learn to live together as brothers - or we will all perish together as fools. This is the great issue facing us today. No individual can live alone; no nation can live alone. We are tied together."

Dopplereffekt brengt dan weer kille detroit techno, die op weer een heel andere manier fascinerend is. Alsof we naar de Amerikaanse achterneven van Kraftwerk luisteren.

Van MC Solaar vond ik Paradisiaque destijds geweldig. Nu hoor ik dat het wel heel erg leunt op een sample van Diana Ross' Love Hangover, maar het blijft een fijne plaat. Ook fijn is het stemgeluid van Beth Orton, die binnen mag komen met de leadtrack van haar laatste ep.

Of de Rolling Stones nog relevant waren tijdens de Bridges to Babylon periode, geen idee. Maar ze maakten voor deze periode wel interessante en licht creepy promo videos. (en een geweldige Deep Dish remix die ze wellicht wel wat relevant maakte).
Van de mooie Maria Montell kan ik de Jaydee remix niet vinden, maar het origineel is wel leuk voor het poppy meezinggehalte, zou zomaar voor ranja nog iets kunnen zijn.
