week 36 voor 1998 waar opvolging nodig is, die komt ook wel maar steeds maar ik kleine aantallen. Deze week wel 3 hoge binnenkomers dus dat belooft wel wat.
Toen Hole met de 1e single van het 3e album kwam had ik goede hoop op een goed album, dat bleek toch een beetje tegen te vallen maar met deze single is weinig mis.
Jennifer Crush met Crush vond ik meteen een heerlijk nummer. Altijd zo gebleven ook. Later leerde ik ook Stranded kennen, misschien nog wel beter maar die is van 2002 dus dat wordt 'm niet meer voor mijn lijst.
Melanie Doane is een canadese singer-songwriter en violiste, die ik een jaar of 10 geleden een keer ontdekte. Muzikaal zit ze op dit nummer in de buurt van een Liz Phair en Aimee Mann.

Op 40 een klein eerbetoon aan Steve Harwell de zanger van Smash Mouth die maandag is overleden. Een band die we redelijk veel draaide vanwege de Shrek bijdrages (All Star; I'm A Believer) die mijn kinderen erg leuk vonden.

De Blonde Redhead single is al maanden oud. In eerste instantie zag ik deze langskomen als Limited Conversation . Een nummer dat op m'n zenuwen werkt. Nu verscheen "de andere kant" in beeld, de Serge Gainsbourg cover Slogan. Deze vind ik leuker maar ik weet niet wat de houdbaarheidstermijn is. Dat zou bij een dergelijk nummer kort kunnen zijn. The Church lijkt daarentegen een groeier te zijn.

Het zomerreces is definitief voorbij en alhoewel de administratie weer op orde is, ben ik nog zeker niet bijgeluisterd. Desondanks weer een flinke sloot nieuwe binnenkomers.

Hoogste nieuwe is van Pulp, met het vermakelijke Party Hard. Het had zo een nummer uit Bowie's glamrockperiode kunnen zijn. Geloof niet dat Pulp ooit meer Bowie-esque heeft geklonken, al hoor ik er ook wel wat Scott Walker in.

Uit het alternatieve segment heb ik Smashing Pumpkins destijds grijsgedraaid, maar anno nu vind ik het gewoon een leuk nummer (en inderdaad een soort 1979 part 2). Van Gomez was dit geloof ik mijn kennismaking, nog altijd een erg leuke single. The Dope Show van Marilyn Manson ken ik dan weer vooral van MTV en het uitgaan. Hij heeft toch een handvol uitstekende nummers gemaakt en dit is daar wel een van. Hole had hun beste periode wel achter de rug, maar kwam nog even met 2 uitstekende singles op de proppen. Deze en zeker Malibu heb ik veel gedraaid. Verhaal ging een beetje dat Billy Corgan aan de plaat van Hole had meegeschreven (of zelfs helemaal had geschreven), omdat er uit Courtney Love zelf niet heel goede muziek meer kwam, maar dat heb ik eigenlijk nooit meer nagezocht.

Astrid heb ik volgens mij destijds wel eens live gezien op London Calling. Prima indiepop uit Glasgow. Moest het wel vaak horen voor het kwartje viel.

DJ Tonka is eurohouse die ik in de Duitse hitlijst heb opgepikt. Leuke plaat met wat early 90s (pianohouse) invloeden. Vreemdgenoeg geen hit in Nederland geweest zo te zien, had prima gekund.

Outkast's laatste single heb ik ergens in het afgelopen decennium pas opgepikt. Plaat die ik steeds beter ga vinden.

Teveel goed werk leidt tot nummers die niet kunnen binnenkomen in de lijst, anderen die weer snel verdwijnen.
Dat neemt niet weg, dat ik natuurlijk zo'n geweldige nieuwe single van Ash niet kan laten liggen. De titel van het nummer laat geen twijfel met Jesus says. De tegenreactie op het succes van Being a girl en het geweldige I wish you were a girl.

Het is maar een titel, religie is ver te zoeken, en de waarheid is dat zelfs het woord Jezus niet voorkomt in de songtekst van Ash. Wel wordt er eenmaal gezongen 'God give me strength' wat voor mij gelijk staat aan het meer simpele 'Jesus Christ', als uitdrukking hoe stom mensen kunnen zijn.

Marillion is ook weer terug en helemaal geen onaardige single, moet ik eerlijk opbiechten.

Een gevecht om de nummer 1 door drie platen, en voorlopig gaan de MSP er met de trofee vandoor, met name ten koste van het breekbare Adia.

Als hoogste nieuwe vinden we op 22 Pulp met Party hard. De song is tegelijk meer dansbaar dan anders, maar ook zijn de gitaren zwaarder overstuurd dan ooit, en een pakkend refrein heeft het toch niet. Het werd dan ook geen doorslaand succes.

Op 32 komt Jennifer Paige binnen met Crush, een nog steeds alom bekende song die in NL een grote top 10 werd. Er zijn heel wat songs geschreven met het thema dat de ik-persoon helemaal niet (zo erg) verliefd is op de ander (I'm not in love uiteraard, maar nog veel meer), maar bij Crush kom ik er niet achter of de zangeres stiekem wel heel erg verliefd is, of het inderdaad maar als een voorbijgaand dingetje beschouwt. Nou ja, wat maakt het uit, het is nog steeds een vlot aangenaam popliedje. Opvallend wel dat Jennifer Paige hierna geen enkele top- of zelfs tipnotering zou halen.

Wat steviger geluiden op 34: Hole met Celebrity skin, de eerste single van hun derde album met dezelfde naam, en wereldwijd ook hun meest succesvolle album en single. Het klinkt dan ook toch iets gelikter dan eerder werk, en de compositie is mede van Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), wat in de gitaarpartijen ook wel enigszins te horen is. Bij mij is het hun laatste entry.

De nineties waren ook het decennium van Sheryl Crow met een hele reeks redelijk succesvolle singles, al bereikte er maar eentje de NL top 40. My favorite mistake is weer zo'n midtempo rocksong, met een stevige gitaar en een simpel refreinzinnetje. Altijd aardig, maar geen hoogvlieger.

Het Nederlandse The Postmen debuteert bescheiden op 38 met Cocktail (waarom niet Hangover?). Het trio maakt rap/hiphop met reggae-invloeden en krijgt direct zeer goede kritieken, en scoort zelfs meteen een behoorlijke top 40-hit (net geen top 10). Het is het begin van een succesvolle carrière.

week 37 voor 1998 waarin Theaudience wel voor de laatste week op 1 zal staan, kan ook wel na 7 weken. Zowaar een keer 5 binnenkomers in dezelfde week, ruimt een beetje op.
Helen Love, uit Wales en Ramones fans, komen met een ode aan de UK muziek. Qua timing wat vreemd, 5 jaar eerder was die toch een stuk meer booming. Qua name calling ook al weinig spannends met Bluetones, Longpigs en Shed Seven. Maar er zit dan ook redelijk wat cynisme in de tekst tegen de platenmaatschappijen 'Ocean Colour Scene will never sell more singles than Gina G'. Tja. Catchy is het wel.
Shakira was in 98 in zuid amerika al een ster, in (west) Europa moest ze nog een paar jaar wachten. Toen ze doorbrak met Whenever Wherever en Underneath My Clothes ging TMF ineens ook dit nummer draaien van een album eerder, uit 1998 dus. Een heerlijk zomers spaanstalig nummer. Ik heb die toen best vaak gezien en vond het minstens zo leuk als de grote hits.
Ik ken het This Is Hardcore album van Pulp eigenlijk niet zo goed, wel een keer uit een uitverkoopbak gevist voor de heb. Deze single doet me erg aan Bowie denken, meer dan andere nummers van ze. Minder rustig dan wat ik me bij het album zo voorstel.
Ik weet eigenlijk pas sinds, eh, gister dat Alisha's Attick nog een tweede album heeft. Van dat album komt nu de eerste single binnen, qua geluid weinig verrassend al lijkt het licht alternatieve randje van het debuut nog iets verder weggepolijst.
Jessica Folcker heb ik in de Tipparade opgedoken, in 99 zal ze een dikke top 10 hit scoren in Nederland maar eerst deze, Muzikaal zit ze ergens tussen landgenoot Robyn en All Saints.

- Destijds kwam All I Need me op een gegeven moment wel de strot uit, maar achteraf is het wel een bijzonder fraai nummer natuurlijk. Met even fijne clip erbij.
- Hollis P. Monroe's I'm Lonely is wel een fijne ontdekking. Mooie chicago houseplaat. Ik zie dat dit zelfs de top 40 heeft gehaald destijds, verrassend.
- Depeche Mode scoort met een wat vergeten single, die uitkwam om een verzamelaar te promoten. Qua sound had het niet misstaan op Ultra.
- The Wiseguys hebben weer een heerlijk vrolijke dansplaat in elkaar gedraaid met allerlei samples. Het heeft een vrolijke 60's sound door een surfgitaar en sunshine popperige 'pa pa pa's'. Die laatste klinken hier zelfs nog meer naar de jaren '60 dan de originele bron zelf (een nummer van The Grass Roots uit die tijd). Hierna is het wel klaar met het succes van The Wiseguys, al scoort een van de heren in de jaren '00 en vroege jaren '10 nog een aantal flinke (club)hits onder andere pseudoniemen.
- Pearl Jam vond ik in de 90's nog tof, maar met Yield hield dat wel een beetje op en daarna is het eigenlijk ook nooit meer goed gekomen. Dit vind ik hun laatste leuke single in een lange tijd, mede door de videoclip die ik nog eens in een popquiz heb gebruikt voor een ronde met animatie videoclips.
- All Saints' Bootie Call is achteraf ook veel leuker dan toen. Dit nummer had ik niet direct in mijn charts verwacht, maar misschien vind ik dit wel een van de leukste top 40 hits van het jaar.

Twee dromerige nieuwe binnenkomers, met The Church en Lousiana en Air met All I need.
Het dromen wordt wel onderbroken door Pearl Jam en de Australische band Living End.

Dat hier met Save the Day zijn debuut meemaakt. De groep bestaat inmiddels bijna 30 jaar en we zijn inmiddels ook 14 albums verder. Het doet mij met deze single een beetje aan Green Day denken.

De Wallflowers mochten een mooie eigen draai geven aan de David Bowie klassieker Heroes. Uitkijken is vereist maar de jongens weten er zelf wat goeds van te maken, zonder wat af te doen aan het origineel.

Nu blijft de hele top 5 staan, maar het zijn relatief jonge platen, dus ik noem het een teken van kracht.

Weer 5 binnenkomers, het gemiddelde aantal. En REM mag weer de hoogste zijn, met Daysleeper. Nog niet bij een collega gezien, misschien werd hij al gedraaid voor de releasedatum (bij de bekende artiesten gebeurt dit zo nu en dan). Het is weer een typische fraaie REM-ballad, met goede stem, een stemmige viool en in alle opzichten degelijk, zonder te excelleren. Wel nog een tipnotering voor deze band, die langzaam steeds minder succes had.

Zo standaard als de hoogste nieuwe was, zo apart is de tweede. De Franse band Manau debuteert op 32 met La tribu de Dana. Een zeer opmerkelijke plaat, in het Frans gezongen en toch een zeer dikke top 40 hit, met Keltisch-Bretonse invloeden in de muziek, en de lange tekst beschrijft hoe de ik-persoon in een prehistorisch verleden met zijn stam vocht in Bretagne tegen de Cimmeriërs en als enige overeind bleef na de slag en zo koning van de stam van Dana werd. Totaal niet passend in het hitwezen van eind jaren 90, maar erg aanstekelijk gedaan. De muziek was overigens wel ontleend aan een Bretonse traditional, Tri Martolod, uit de 18e eeuw.

Op 34 belanden we weer op bekender terrein met de Amerikaanse band Matchbox 20, dat met Real world nog een notering weet te behalen. Dit klinkt weer behoorlijk conventioneel, en het bekendere Push hoor je er steeds doorheen.

Wat minder conventioneel is Marilyn Manson, dat met The dope show en de bijbehorende clip opnieuw weet te shockeren. Het industriële rockgeluid sloeg in Nederland nooit erg aan, dit is hun enige tipnotering. Misschien zijn we in Nederland minder gevoelig voor het controversiële.

Groot succes was er in Nederland wel voor Faithless, dat met God is a DJ zelfs de eerste plek van de top 40 wist te bereiken. De band had al heel wat singles en hits gehad, maar hiermee bereikte het de top. De transachtige dancemuziek met de bezwerende teksten sloegen erg aan, en waren zowel geschikt voor de dansvloer als voor de kritische muziekliefhebber. En het succes zou nog wel een tijdje voortduren met vergelijkbare singles.

week 38 voor 1998 waar Jennifer Paige op het punt staat de nederlandse top 40 te bereiken, bij mij alvast op 1 terecht gekomen. Dat doet wel recht aan hoe ik toen over het nummer dacht, heerlijk vrolijk. Vijf binnenkomers die allemaal - ondanks dat ik er 2 op een album heb - niet bepaald bekend in de oren klonken.
Drugstore komt met de 3e single van het 2e album, en ze lijken zowaar een uptempo song gemaakt te hebben. Dat mogen ze vaker doen, lekkere noise invloeden ook waarbij ze meer dan ooit op Cranes gaan lijken, maar dan ineens ook een stukje mariachi band er bij.
Axelle Red kwam in 98 met haar 2e album, in het verlengde van het debuut met veel meeslepende ballads, dat kan ze toch goed.
Sheryl Crow met My Favourite Mistake, een van haar bekendste dacht ik maar bij beluistering blijkt dat m'n herinnering wat anders verwachtte. Ofzo. In elk geval beter dan ik me herinner.
Dodgy had in de britpop-periode wel wat singles die best goed waren maar toch een beetej als vreemde eend voelden, nu komen ze met een nieuwe die een beetje alle kanten op gaat. Kinks, Beatles, Supergrass, zeg het maar.
Silver Sun is ook al lastig te vatten, ik kende ze niet maar ze bestaan blijkbaar nog steeds met een laatste album in 2020. Dit powerpop plaatje lijkt dan weer beïnvloed door oa the Sweet en ELO.
