Zal dan uiteindelijk Placebo de top kunnen bedreigen met hun nieuwe single?
Ik moet zeggen dat Placebo bij mij niet veel kwaad kan doen: het ene mooie prachtige nummer na het andere wordt uitgebracht en ik ga daar niet over klagen.

Echt verrassend is het dus ook niet. De Cardigans hebben ook weer een mooie song. Ze moeten altijd iets meer hun best doen voor een hoge notering. De Zweedse Nina Persson heeft ook een prachtige stem die goed past bij het opbeurende werk van de band, nu mooi uitgekristalliseerd.

R.E.M. heeft een nieuwe song maar de band had net de pech dat ik vanmiddag Shiny Happy People nog weer eens voorbij hoorde komen. Daar valt dan voor mij Daysleeper toch een beetje bij in het niet. Maar misschien trekt het wat bij.

Bij mij pakt Placebo de eerste plek af van de Manic Street Preachers, en het zou zo kunnen dat dat komende week in de gezamenlijke precies hetzelfde loopt...

Slechts drie nieuwe deze week, maar wel hoge entry's; sterker nog, alle drie bij de bovenste 20, dus niet een bij de onderste 20, en dat zou best een unieke prestatie kunnen zijn.

Op 15 maar liefst debuteert Rialto, een Engelse rockband, met Monday morning 5.19. De song is muzikaal dramatisch ingekleurd (met violen), de zang is ook wat onheilspellend, hoewel ik de tekst niet goed volg, is wel duidelijk dat het helemaal fout afloopt. Een ijzersterk debuut, waarmee de band U2 en Alanis Morrissette verslaat, maar opvallend genoeg blijft het (bij mij) bij deze ene hit. Ik lees dat dit (ook) aan mismanagement lag. Toch zonde.

U2 stond in deze tijd op een keerpunt. Hun album Pop was volledig uitgemolken, en de singles deden het eerlijk gezegd niet zo goed, en hun modernere stijl was wellicht ook voor de band zelf nogal wennen. De bezinningsperiode werd overbrugd met een best of-album, The best of 1980-1990, en daarop stond dit Sweetest thing, oorspronkelijk de B-kant van Where the streets have no name uit 1987, maar niet eerder op album verschenen. En deze oude B-kant werd weer wel een ouderwetse top 10 hit; zou dat de doorslag hebben gegeven om weer terug te keren naar hun jaren 80-geluid? De song zelf is een charmante liefdesode van Bono aan zijn vrouw, zoals we dat in hun repertoire verder eigenlijk niet tegenkomen, met ironie gebracht, een eenvoudig liedje.

Voor Alanis Morissette kwam na het immense succes van Jagged little pill ook een belangrijk moment, de eerste single van haar tweede album Supposed former infatuation junkie. En dat was Thank U. De sound is duidelijk veranderd, minder rock, meer dance, en tekstueel is dit nog meer veranderd, volwassen geworden: niet meer kwaad op de wereld, maar juist dankbaar voor al het goede dat ze ontvangt. Het ontwapenende van de tekst wordt in de clip geïllustreerd doordat ze de hele clip volledig naakt rondloopt (wel met wat blur, omdat het toch ook uitgezonden moest worden), en deze wending werd door het publiek zeer gewaardeerd, het werd (pas) haar tweede top 10 hit in Nederland.

week 39 voor 1998 met eindelijk weer eens 5 binnenkomers, die kon ik wel gebruiken.
Aan de top is het niet heel spannend momenteel.
Ash komt met de 1e single van Nu-Clear Sounds, het eerste album waar ze met z'n vieren zijn incl. Charlotte Heatherly op gitaar. Minder poppy single, wel hun hardste denk ik.
Van Terrorvision, ik zei het al eens eerder, had ik in de 90s een heel ander beeld. Ze blijken best goede muziek te maken, deze Josephine klinkt wat grungy, gewoon lekkere gitaarplaat.
Republica moest na een album met 2 geweldige singles en grote hits met een opvolger komen, dat viel niet mee. De eerste single gaat nog hoopvol verder waar Ready to Go en Drop Dead Gorgeous gebleven waren maar dat hielden ze geen album meer vol. Maar ok, nu deze single eerst en die kan er nog wel mee door.
Deep Dish ken ik van Flash Dance natuurlijk, maar ze maakten al veel langer muziek. In 98 dus deze single met EbtG, op album (en spotify) ruim 9 minuten maar er is ook een single versie.
Beautiful South maakt altijd wel originele liedjes met leuke teksten; dit nummer was muzikaal echter wel een verrassing, klinkt toch heel anders zeker als Paul Heaton z'n beste Elvis-stem imitatie doet.

Flink wat nieuwe aanwas, maar er komen dan ook veel mooie dingen uit. Weer een nieuwe single van Massive Attack. Inertia Creeps voelt misschien meer als albumtrack, maar ik vind hem toch wel erg goed. Al zal het succes van Angel moeilijk te overtreffen zijn.

Van Elliott Smith vond ik destijds Waltz #2 en de bijbehorende plaat XO prachtig, de afgelopen jaren zijn mijn voorkeuren wat gewijzigd en geef ik meer de voorkeur aan ouder werk. Toch blijft het wel een erg fraai nummer.

Daysleeper van R.E.M. heeft een beetje hetzelfde sentiment. Ik geloof dat de hitparades inmiddels wel uit zicht waren, maar belangrijker is dat dit een fraai authentiek Stipe-nummer is. Ik zag dat 'ie bij mij destijds pas na een week of 4 binnenkwam, wat me doet vermoeden dat ik in 1998 niet meer zo'n groot R.E.M. fan was als 2 jaar eerder. Ik vind het nummer nu ook mooier dan toen.

Ash' Jesus Says is zo'n nummer dat ik een beetje vergeten was, maar moet zeggen dat het er nu toch weer in gaat als koek. Geweldige intro en erg opwekkend overal, alleen het refrein is wellicht wat minder. Maar ik word er toch wel erg blij van deze weer te horen.

Neil Hannon's The Divine Comedy brengt al de hele 90s fijne albums uit, maar qua singles blijft het eigenlijk wat achter. Nu zijn er wel een paar hele fijne op komst, waarvan dit de eerste is. Voor de liefhebbers van theatrale britpop.

Deep Dish levert samen met Everything But The Girl een prima danceplaat op. Dat EBTG en house goed samengaan hebben we wel gehoord op Missing en dit zit ook een beetje in dat straatje. De lange albumversie is erg de moeite waard.

The King was toen volgens mij wel een populaire novelty act: een Elvis-imitator die nummers zingt van overleden rocksterren van 'na zijn tijd', zoals hier dus Nirvana's Come As You Are. De meeste novelty plaatjes heb ik na 1 keer wel weer gehoord, maar deze blijft langer leuk heb ik gemerkt.

Deze week wel 7 binnenkomers. Op 20 Ash met Jesus says. hun eerste single na 4 uiterst succesvolle noteringen, van hun nieuwe album Nu-Clear sounds. Deze sloeg helaas niet zo erg aan, het werd niet zo'n (indie) klassieker en ik was hem ook totaal vergeten. Het klinkt wel prima, maar niet bijzonder.

Op 23 het Nederlandse Nilsson met hun derde single op rij die gemakkelijk mijn top 10 zal halen, My brain's down. Het gas wordt hier wat teruggenomen, maar de zang is intens en de tekst gaat ook diep. In de refreinen gaat de band en de zang weer voluit. Toch een van de betere Nederlandse bands uit de nineties, en dat gewoon afkomstig uit Alkmaar.

Op 26 eels, een band die nog talloze malen bij mij zal scoren, maar met Last stop: this town gaan ze wel hun grootste hit behalen. De band staat niet bekend om hun vrolijke muziek, maar op deze single heerst toch een wat uptempo ritme en veel afwisseling in sound, met beats, scratches, gitaren en wel weer die praatzang van Mark E. Ook dit haalt niet eens onze tipparade.

Na het verrassende Love unlimited, dat nog in zijn laatste week genoteerd staat, brengen de Fun Lovin' Criminals alweer een nieuwe single uit, Big night out. Deze klinkt wat minder apart, met veel rap, een vaak herhaald refrein, maar toch ook een stukje waar het tempo eruit gaat en de sound zelfs richting gospel gaat, dus toch een onverwachte wending. Om eerlijk te zijn past het niet echt bij elkaar.

Op 33 alweer Van Dik Hout, met De keuzes die je maakt. De band brengt altijd degelijke rockmuziek, met prima teksten, maar verrassend of prachtig is het eigenlijk nooit. Niettemin een onderschatte band.

Op 34 George Michael met Outside, waarmee hij (definitief) uit de kast komt en zelfs maar meteen het andere uiterste zoekt met een parodie (met name in de clip, maar ook wel in de tekst) op hoe hij zelf door een agent in een publiek toiletgebouw gearresteerd werd. En de song zelf? Outside is een erg vrolijke upbeat, wat ouderwetse discosong met veel violen. De tekst is niet ouderwets, het is een soort viering van de vrije liefde, overal waar je maar wilt.

Op 37 dan nog weer een vrij obscure plaat van Rachid, een Amerikaanse R n B zanger, met zijn ballad Pride. De song klinkt aangenaam zwoel, dit had toch wel een grotere hit kunnen worden.

Ah, Nilsson. Ik had die voor 1999 maar aangezien die eind deze maand al in de tipparade staat zou dat gek zijn Foutje van RYM blijkbaar.

Na een geweldig 1997 is Supergrass weer terug met een nieuwe single. Het is voor mij vooral het tweede deel dat mij goed bevalt. Maar de opwinding die ik had bij de singles van In it for the money blijft nog even achterwege.
Dan is er de vierde single dit jaar van Rialto. Mooi als je na je vakantie kunt komen met een titel als Summer's over. Hoewel. Nazomeren kan natuurlijk ook nog en de single van Rialto is (opnieuw) goed genoeg voor de hoogste plaatsen. Het is haast Beatlesk.

Goed genoeg voor de hoogste plaatsen geldt ook voor de Levellers, een band waar je eigenlijk nooit klachten over kunt hebben. Bozos is weer vrij stevig van aard.
En dan is er ook nog de band Him die een verrassend nieuwe versie van Wicked game van Chris Isaak heeft neergezet. Daar is heel wat vuurwerk aan toegevoegd en het betaalt zich uit.
En ik dacht dat het eenmalig was maar de Japanse band Supercar heeft alleraardigst nieuw werk uitgebracht. Toch grappig, en waarom ook niet, dat ook vanuit Japan de westerse rockmarkt wordt bestookt.

Leuk dat jij die nog meeneemt, staat al weken bij mij in de top 20.

week 40 voor 1998 met weinig verschuivingen aan de top en 3 binnenkomers.
Hoogste nieuwe is voor Nilsson, uit Texel zeggen we altijd al waren ze destijds al verhuisd naar het veste land. Ze hebben al 2x op 1 gestaan bij mij. Hun nieuwe is misschien wel de bekendste, net als Elastic Baby ook veel wisselingen in hard en zacht en meeslepend gezongen.
Alanis met haar nieuwste, ook meeslepend en zo'n beetje de hele wereld wordt bedankt.
Placebo dan nog met een nummer dat me niks zei, gelukkig is het een uptempo nummer dus dat is zeker ok.
