Zo nu en dan heeft P.M. Dawn me door de jaren heen toch verrast met een toffe productie en dat geldt ook weer voor Gotta Be, waarbij heel fraai gebruik wordt gemaakt van een sample uit Just an Illusion van Imagination. Het wordt daarom dan ook wel eens tijd om me wat te gaan verdiepen in het oeuvre van P.M. Dawn.

Over samples gesproken...Towa Tei...de naam zei me niets, tot ik zag dat het een van de kernleden van Deee-Lite is geweest. En toen begon er ook een belletje te rinkelen, want in GBI wordt zo nu en dan subtiel gebruik gemaakt van samples uit Groove is in the Heart. In dit geval werkt hij dus verrassend samen met Kylie Minogue. Mooie combi. Had dit nummer nooit eerder gehoord, klinkt ook niet al te commercieel natuurlijk.

Ben altijd wel liefhebber geweest van de smooth R&B van Keith Sweat. En Snoop weet zijn featurings ook wel uit te kiezen. Come And Get With Me is dan ook weer helemaal in mijn straatje.

Een hele reeks aan nieuwe binnenkomers. En allemaal even prachtig.
Fuel is nog redelijk bekend, ik zou de band Beachwood Sparks even afluisteren en volgen. Ik vind het niet klinken als een beroemde band, veel albums hebben ze ook niet uitgebracht.

Paul Weller (ex The Jam, Style Council) is ook weer eens terug. Zijn stem heeft niets meer uit te staan met toen het nog 1977 was. Iedereen wordt ouder. Maar Weller compenseert het door gewoon met een sterke compositie te komen.

Een gemiddelde week, met 5 binnenkomers (wat het gemiddelde is), en zelfs het totaal aantal weken van alle platen samen blijft exact gelijk.

Beastie Boys scoren op 26 de hoogste nieuwe met Body moving, waarop de titel erg vaak herhaald wordt, er muzikaal weer diverse geluidjes langskomen en de coupletten weer het vertrouwde gerap is van de drie heren. De clip maakt het wat vermakelijker.

Op 30 komt eindelijk Shania Twain binnen met haar debuutsingle You're still the one. Waarom eindelijk? Volgens het top 40 Hitdossier kwam deze single op 2 mei 1998 in de top 40 binnen, en bijna een half jaar later zet ik hem er alsnog in. Het hielp ongetwijfeld dat deze plaat in de top 40 het extreem lang vol hield, 27 weken met hoogste positie 10, dat is tegenwoordig niet zo vreemd maar was toen echt uitzonderlijk. En ik herinner me wel dat de plaat steeds meer in mijn hoofd bleef hangen, en dat ik er ook een privébetekenis aan ging geven, dus uiteindelijk besloot ik hem toch ook maar te noteren. Het is een fraaie ballad met een positieve inslag; achteraf kan ik het raar vinden dat ik hem niet veel eerder in mijn lijst gezet had.

Na het grote succes van (de remix van) Missing bracht Everything but the Girl nog heel wat meer singles uit met dancebeats, wel met minder succes. Op 36 komt de band binnen met The future of the future. Gelukkig kunnen we nog gewoon het ontroerende stemgeluid horen van Tracy Thorn, en de song is ook niet onaardig.

Het Engelse All Saints scoorde deze jaren een aantal flinke hits, en Bootie call is er daar een van. Het is wat meer uptempo, maar de vocalen zijn nog steeds een streling voor het oor. Het liedje zelf vind ik wat minder interessant.

De Canadese Jewel specialiseerde zich in breekbare ballads, en dat geldt ook voor Hands. Hoewel dit nog best fraai klinkt, komt wel de vraag op hoe lang je met gelijksoortige songs een carrière kunt voortzetten.

week 43 voor 1998 waar Nilsson voor de 3e keer de nummer haalt, maar het gaat vast spannend worden met Cardigans en Garbage er vlak onder. Drie binnenkomers.
The White Stripes waren hier nog maar net bezig en dat is vooral aan de productie goed te horen. Nauwelijks meer dan een demo maar toch al erg goed met de bekende tempowisselingen met gitaar breaks.
Van The Afghan Whigs had ik destijds geen idee dat die nog muziek maakten. Ik weet eigenlijk ook niet of ik dat destijds goed zou hebben gevonden. Bekend geluid van het Gentlemen album maar dan met een flink dosis soul er in.
Ik zag ooit op een platenbeurs een single van Fungus staan, leek veelbelovend dus gekocht. Niet helemaal wat ik verwachtte maar toch ook niet verkeerd. Overigens was dat niet deze single maar eentje uit 1999. Ze komen uit Zweden en zitten muzikaal ergens tussen Wannadies en Foo Fighters.

Hoogste nieuwe is voor Touch & Go, met een plaat die ik vooral associeer met het uitgaan uit die tijd. Leuke electroswing met een opvallende tekst. Kan me eigenlijk helemaal niet meer herinneren of dit destijds ook op MTV of op de radio kwam. En zou ook geen tweede single van deze artiest kunnen opnoemen. De producer lijkt zich verder vooral met new age muziek te hebben bezig gehouden.

New Radicals waren in ieder geval niet weg te slaan van MTV, bijna tot vervelens toe. Maar het is toch echt wel een sterk nummer. Ook hier kan ik zo gauw geen tweede nummer opnoemen, al ziet ergens diep in mijn geheugen nog wel een tweede single opgesloten.

ISAN maakt electronica, een beetje in de hoek van grofweg Boards of Canada maar wel iets toegankelijker.

Placebo en Afghan Whigs zijn bekende namen natuurlijk. Destijds was ik compleet weg van deze nummers, vooral die van Placebo (single gekocht en een dikke #1 in mijn charts destijds), maar nu is dat toch een stuk minder.

Een beetje een moeilijke binnenkomer op nummer 40. Over twee weken (9 november) komt de debuut EP van Doves uit met daarop Rise. Die gaat zeker mijn Top 5 halen. Maar ik zag dat er ook nog een andere single/EP in 1998 is uitgebracht. Een samenwerking met Jane Weaver: Seven Day Smile Video. Ik kan het nummer nauwelijks terug vinden. Alleen op een blog van Doves zelf. Dat lijkt een latere uitvoering (of alleen de beelden?). Een mooie nummer. Waarschijnlijk niet toevallig dat YouTube daarna bij mij met Jewel komt. Het past wel in de hoek van breekbare ballads. Of het de single versie van Seven Day Smile is? NB. Ik blijf het bijzonder vinden dat het regelmatig makkelijker is over releases uit 1979 info te vinden dan die uit 1998.

Overigens was de dreampop samenwerking van Low, Transient Waves & Piano Magic op Sleep at the Bottom voor mij tot twee weken geleden ook onbekend.

In verschillende lijstjes staat nog Het Laatste Rondje van de VS: Closing Time van Semisonic. Inmiddels is alweer twee maanden geleden de opvolger Singing In My Sleep gereleased. De CD maxi single heb ik toen in de VS gekocht. Op deze uitgave stonden o.a. covers van Prince en de Hollies. Vond ik toen wel leuk. Maar bij nader inzien zal dat wel mede door de omstandigheden zijn gekomen (zijn terug te vinden op YouTube). Overigens is de zanger Dan Wilson wel redelijk terecht gekomen. Hij scheef o.a. 3 nummers samen met Adele voor haar album 21 waaronder Someone Like You. Eigenlijk is zijn cover van The Air That I Breathe dan bij nader inzien niet toevallig. De lijst van artiesten waar hij nog meer voor schreef of die hij produceerde is eindeloos: Weezer, Nada Surf, Nas (!); P!nk, Taylor Swift, Birdy, Jason Mraz, Tom Morello, Panic At The Disco, John Legend etc.

Jennifer Paige kreeg bekendheid als zangeres van een cover band. Catatonia komt met nog een single van doorbraakalbum International Velvet; ik wist niet dat dit ook een single was.
M People is een band waar ik destijds niet veel van moest hebben. Nu heeft het toch wel enigzins een nostalgisch geluid. Op hun nieuste lijken ze de kerst al in te gaan.

Hoogste nieuwe is voor Madonna met een van haar betere ballads en alweer de 3e topsingle van Ray of Light.

Van Natalie Imbruglia komt vooral Torn nog wel eens langs, de singles erna hoor je helaas zelden nog. Terwijl er toch ook wel pareltjes tussenzitten. Het wat elektronisch getinte Smoke zei me niet veel meer, maar na een paar keer draaien raak ik steeds meer overtuigd.

Silver Jews van David Berman (en voorheen o.a. Stephen Malkmus van Pavement) heb ik me nooit zo in verdiept, maar dat wordt nu dan misschien eens tijd. Dit nummer zit net als Pavement ook een beetje in de rock met country-invloedenhoek. Na een paar keer draaien heb ik nog niet het gevoel dat ik het helemaal doorgrond heb, maar het intrigeert wel behoorlijk.

(Afternoon) Soaps van Arab Strap was ook een groeiplaatje. Het nummer klinkt ook echt alsof het 2 uur 's middags is en de zanger uit pure luiheid nog steeds in bed ligt. Ergens heeft het ook wel een beetje een 60's popvibe, gekgenoeg.

Fatboy Slim's Gangster Trippin is een beetje een vergeten single, zo tussen wat grotere hits in. Maar toch wel leuk om weer een paar keer te horen. Eigenlijk meer om te horen hoe hij het in elkaar heeft gezet dan dat ik er nog echt wild van word. Zo vroeg ik me al weken af uit welke soulplaat die blazers zijn gesampled die je de hele tijd hoort. Nu maar eens opgezocht, uit You Did It van Ann Robinson dus (was ik nooit opgekomen). Hier te vinden trouwens, al die samples:

Als je wel eens naar het nieuws op de BBC kijkt dan hoor je als begintune het werk van de man achter Touch and Go. Ook in Noorwegen en India is bij het nieuws zijn muziek te horen. Over de zang wordt geheimzinnig gedaan, maar het is niet de zangeres van de band, maar een stukje tekst uit een documentaire uit 1997, The Science of Sex.

Een beetje als Het is Weer Voorbij Die Mooie Zomer van Gerard Cox, maar dan met een wat diepere laag, waarbij het einde van de zomer gebruikt wordt als metafoor voor het onvermijdelijke einde dat komt aan het gevoel van geluk.

Erg opvallend dat Elliott Smith en in mindere mate PJ Harvey de lijst niet hebben gehaald. Die eerste stond vorig jaar zelfs nog op 47 in de MuMeLadder, als hoogste nummer uit 1998.

Vier binnenkomers deze week, en de hoogste is een herintreder: Star chasers van 4Hero had al 6 weken gehaald, maar kennelijk hoorde ik hem nog eens goed op de radio en kon hij zo op 15 mijn top 40 binnenstormen.

Op 25 de Barenaked Ladies, de Canadese indie rockband met de opvallende naam, en voor mij ook een one hit wonder, want One week blijft hun enige entry. Het is wel een aparte song, met zeer snel gezongen refreinen en een sterk refrein. Ik had verwacht dat dit toch wel in NL de tipparade haalde, maar dat blijkt niet zo te zijn. Wel een geinige song om weer terug te horen. Overigens is deze band misschien nog wel bekender geworden van hun theme song van de Big Bang Theory.

Op 29 het vertrouwde geluid van The Black Crowes met Kickin' my heart around, ditmaal nog wat sneller dan anders, wel weer met gospelachtige vrouwenkoortjes en een vuige mondharmonicasolo (en natuurlijk ook een gitaarsolo), zo horen we het graag.

Beck scoort op 32 de vierde binnenkomer met Tropicalia, een heel andere sound dan The Black Crowes, behoorlijk easy listening met (niet verrassend) wat latin-invloeden. Prettig om naar te luisteren, maar Becks stem vind ik niet erg bijzonder en dit liedje weet ook niet helemaal te overtuigen.

week 45 voor 1998 waar Nilsson nog een weekje op 1 blijft, gaan The Cardigans dat nog halen met Jewel en Bis in aantocht? Vier binnenkomers in totaal.
Bis scoorde met hun eerste album flink, in werkelijkheid leerde ik de band ergens tussen het eerste en tweede album kennen. Wel ruim op tijd voor deze single, een heerlijke mix van electro en pop/rock.
Van Madonna wordt deze periode als beste beschouwd, daar ben ik het niet echt mee eens. Maar een ballad als dit is wel gewoon prima.
Beck met Tropicalia, inderdaad wat latin invloeden. Niet z'n beste maar wel ok.
Tina Cousins komt met feitelijk de opvolger van de grote hit die ze met Sash! scoorde. Pray is wat meer standaard en haalt het ook niet echt bij Killing Time.
