- Het Finse collectief 22-Pistepirkko haalde het begin 90's ook al een paar keer mijn lijst (o.a. met het prachtige Birdy) en nu zijn ze terug met het maffe Onion Soup, dat ik indertijd via Kink FM heb leren kennen.
- The Cardigans kwam destijds heel vaak op MTV met een gecensureerde videoclip. De ongecensureerde clip zou ik pas in de zomer van '99 zien toen ik op vakantie was in Rusland en de MTV terplekke iets soepeler was.
- DJ Hell met een electroclash-hitje. Heeft niets te maken met de gelijknamige EBM/dark wave-artiest.
- Alanis Morissette met een toch wel uitstekende single. Na Jagged Little Pill had zij haar kruit bepaald nog niet verschoten.
- Tori Amos' singles halen niet meer standaard mijn lijst. De vorige net niet, deze net wel. Prettige muziek, maar de magie van de eerste 2 albums ligt alweer even achter ons.
- Nada Surf is altijd leuk, al haalt dit het niveau van het debuutalbum. Gelukkig hebben ze nog een aantal topsingles in het verschiet.

Voor de vierde week op rij staan de Manic street Preachers op 1 met If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next (ranboy #2, AngeloV #3, musician #4, 50tracks #4, Ries_72 #4, Poeha #4). De concurrentie van Placebo is voorbij, deze week is het gat ineens erg groot geworden.

Hun vorige single, A Life Less Ordinary, kwam vorig jaar binnen op 3 en steeg de week erna naar de eerste plaats en deze lijkt al net zo hard te gaan. Dit nummer gaat over hun beroerde gevoel terwijl ze op tour waren ver van huis. In het nummer komt New York voor, de plaats waar twee leden van Ash over zes jaar naar toe zullen verhuizen.

Normaal ben ik niet zo into Canibus, maar deze combi met Youssou N'Dour (en Wyclef Jean) werkt wonderwel. Ze zijn hier beiden top. Persoonlijk vind ik dit tot de top 10 nummers van 1998 behoren.

Joints & Jam is het nummer waardoor ik ben gevallen voor het eerste werk van BEP. Helaas hielden ze deze stijl niet lang vast en trad het verval al snel in.

Een energieke song, de nieuwe van Guano Apes.
Dit is voor mij nu echt een band waar ik de naam wel eens voorbij zie komen maar waarbij ik eigenlijk nog nooit op zoek naar de muziek ben gegaan.
Het lijkt mij ook wel een soort van debuut, het eerste album van de Guano Apes verscheen in 1997. Dit is een sterk nummer.

Dat betwijfel ik een beetje bij de nieuwe van U2. The Sweetest thing gaat door met de hakken over de sloot. Maar ik krijg er geen "ouderwets" U2 gevoel bij. Eigenlijk is het een beetje te matig om goed te kunnen concurreren. We moeten het afwachten.

De top 2 blijft staan, maar Thank U gaat verontrustend hard van 10 naar 3...

Vijf nieuwe deze week, waarvan op 23 het Zweedse Kent als hoogste met Things she said. De opvolgsingle van If you were here is bij mij ook meteen de laatste notering. Het is een onopvallende, wat stroperige single die best aangenaam klinkt maar zo weer vergeten is.

Op 35 het nog niet vergeten Closing time van Semisonic, waarmee ze bij mij debuteren. Het is een aanstekelijk liedje, zowel de coupletten als het refrein, en de tegeltjeswijsheid every new beginning
Comes from some other beginning's end valt op al is mij niet echt duidelijk waarom dit hier gesteld wordt.

Op 36 de Australische popband Savage Garden met To the moon and back. Voorganger Truly, madly deeply werd een grote top 10-hit maar vond ik niets aan, maar dit is wel een lekkere vlotte single, zonder dat het grote hoogten bereikt. Maar dit werd dan weer een klein top 40-hitje.

Op 37 vinden we zomaar Melanie B., Scary Spice van de Spice Girls (een band die absoluut nooit in mijn top 40 heeft gestaan). Maar I want you back is totaal andere koek, erg vet geproduceerde R n B, met ondersteuning van Missy Elliott, en een opdringerige viool.

Op 38 de inmiddels vergeten song Hey now now van Swirl 360, een Amerikaanse band uit Florida. Het is alternative op zijn meest gelikt, met wat vervormende geluidseffecten, een standaardopbouw en een simpel refrein. Ook voor deze band blijft het bij deze ene notering.

week 41 voor 1998 waarin de hele top 3 bestaat uit singles die er 6 weken in staan. Goed weekje binnenkomers destijds. Deze week zou over een poosje zomaar ongeveer hetzelfde kunnen bereiken met 6 binnenkomers.
Cardigans komen met de eerste single van het 4e album, wat ook als opvolger van het doorbraakalbum gezien kan worden. De gitaren gaan wat harder maar blijft erg herkenbaar. De clip is opgenomen met 4 verschillende einden waarvan er 3 niet zo goed aflopen voor Nina. Op cd cd-single staan ze allemaal.
Garbage met de volgende single van het 2e album met de bekende sound en een stukje Pretenders duidelijk verwerkt in het nummer. Bij de Garbage GH onlangs heb ik het nummer als hoogste van het 2e album geplaatst, op 3 ook gewoon.
Natalie Imbruglia komt met een rustiger nummer wat ik voor deze week eigenlijk niet als single kende. Wel mooi nummer natuurlijk.
Björk met nog een single van het Homogenic album, en waarschijnlijk de beste van dat album. Dit klinkt nog een beetje alsof het ook op Debut of Post had gepast. In de clip is ze haar tijd ver vooruit met morphing en filter ver voor tiktok en snapchat bestonden
Edyta Bartosiewicz heb ik dit jaar ontdekt via het poolse-album topic, een eerdere single heeft m'n lijst al gehaald en had deze onthouden voor deze week. Prima pop/rock nummer, beetje Melissa Etheridge achtig waarvan de titel blijkbaar 'Liefde als vuur' betekent.
Boo Radleys zijn al een poos verwijderd van hun shoegaze achtige noisepop, maar de allervrolijkste britpop is er ook wel af. Beetje terug naar normaal al blijft het wel wat schreeuwerig.

Verrassende hoogste binnenkomer is de geweldige debuut single (EP) Belladonna van het Noorse Madrugada . Deze week was de uitslag van de Album van het jaar top 15 over 1999. Met op 2 zowel in de gezamenlijke lijst als ook in mijn persoonlijk lijst het debuutalbum van Madrugada . Ik ging daarom nog eens kijken of er ook singles waren uitgebracht. Dat werd ook weer een leuke ontdekkingreis. Ik werd eerst op het verkeerde been gezet door RYM die 1999 als jaar voor de debuut EP heeft staan. Andere bronnen waaronder de site van de band zelf gaven echter 1998. Toen nog de datum van release vinden. Ik kon het nergens vinden tot ik een leuk "gesprek" met ChatGPT kreeg. Daarin kreeg ik steeds specifiekere info. Uiteindelijk gaf ik een prompt waarin ik vroeg op Noorse sites te zoeken. Toen kreeg ik als antwoord dat de EP al in Mei 1998 is uitgebracht. Weer meer geleerd over Chat en een prachtig nummer in de lijst.

En dan deze week ook nog de leuke debuut single van Britney. Daarna werd het helaaas snel minder.

De eerste single van het Album Gran Turismo en het nummer wordt het jaar erop ook opgenomen in het computerspelletje met dezelfde naam. Het nummer was eerst een rustig nummer, maar er werd besloten het tempo te verdubbelen.

19 | nilsson - my brain’s down
Nilsson met een nummer dat op verzoek van Radio 3 uitgebracht werd als single. De videoclip is opgenomen in de schuilkelder onder metrostation Weesperplein in Amsterdam. Ik woon er niet ver vandaan, maar ik wist niet dat daar een schuilkelder was. Dus mocht het alsnog misgaan met Putin en je bent in de buurt, dan weet je waar je naar toe moet.

De eerste single ooit die geforceerd uit de dagelijkse top 10 van meest aangevraagde nummers van MTV Amerika werd gehaald, omdat het nummer maar niet verdween.

Flipmode Squad's Cha Cha Cha was geen hit zag ik, maar toch kwam het me wel erg bekend voor. Lekkere hiphopplaat, een van de betere met Busta Rhymes.
Een paar plaatsen lager nog een hiphopplaat. Dr. Greenthumb van Cypress Hill, met op de b-side trouwens Tequila Sunrise dat wel redelijk bekend is geworden. In de Volkskrant Zomerquiz van afgelopen juli/augustus was dit zelf de antwoord op een quizvraag waarin een grote zomerhit werd gezocht, maar dit nummer heeft ook helemaal nooit de Nederlandse charts gehaald.
Daartussenin komt Motorpsycho binnen met Hey, Jane, hun enige soort van hitje (met name op Kink FM).
Qua alternatief is er ook nog ruimte voor een wat onbekendere, maar wel erg leuke single van Cake. Hoor je eigenlijk nooit meer, terwijl dit voor mij wel een blijvertje is gebleken. Dodgy's Every Single Day heeft een andere vibe dan het wat oudere werk en was voor mij eigenlijk een ontdekking. De singlehoes spreekt boekdelen denk ik over welke richting ik bedoel.

Bono zal het met me eens zijn: anno 1998 kan U2 niet op tegen....alles wat er nu in de Top 30 staat, anders was The Sweetest Thing wel gestegen.

Meer nummers haken voortijdig af, het aanbod is gigantisch. Ik had vandaag 21 interessante tips voor vier plekken.
En dan wordt het nog Manson en Mansun. Ik moet een kleine inhaalslag voor Marilyn Manson organiseren, jawel. Eerlijk verdiend ook. Ze staan nog niet zo op eenzame hoogte zoals Mansun op dit moment. Maar ze mogen worden gezien.

Ik heb een geweldige nieuwe Harvey Danger ook, de opvolger van Flagpole Sitta. Eigenlijk zou iedereen daar voor moeten vallen, maar ja.

En dan heb ik ook nog een bizarre single van Neutral Milk Hotel. Ik heb hier op de site gekeken bij het bijbehorende album In the Aeroplane over the sea. Bijna 1100 users geven het een cijfer boven de vier, gemiddeld. Dat is hoog. De users van Rate your Music, aan de andere kant van de oceaan, hebben voor 1998 dit album op de eerste plaats gezet. Dat zegt wel wat.
Ook over de single.

Nou, RYM heeft users over de hele wereld. Uit de US natuurlijk maar ook ontzettend veel uit Europa en ook Australie, zuid amerika, Japan... op de Community homepage kun je een kaartje bekijken met wie er momenteel de site gebruiken, afhankelijk van de lokale tijd kun je daar mooi zien hoe wereldwijd het gebruikt wordt.

Alanis Morissette stoomt gewoon door naar de eerste plek, haar tweede nummer 1-hit bij mij (na Uninvited) en ook de laatste.

De hoogste nieuwe (van 4) is deze week Seal met Human beings, geen song die je nog op de radio hoort, maar wel zoals je mag verwachten een sfeervol geproduceerde en indringend gezongen song, voldoende kwaliteit maar kennelijk niet voldoende catchy voor een hit.

Op 29 The Boo Radleys, maar ze klinken bepaald niet meer zoals op Wake up Boo. Het geluid is elektronischer en meer dansbaar, de zang is ook eentoniger; het refrein wordt aan het eind zeker wel 30 keer herhaald, ik vind dat nu wat te veel van het goede....

Op 34 alweer een nieuwe single van onze Belgische vrienden van K's Choice. If you're not scared klinkt sympathiek en prettig als een warm bad. De zang is bijna geheel tweestemmig, wat het ook liever maakt. En daartussendoor parelt de gitaar, prima song.

De laagste nieuwe is ook de bekendste (zoals wel vaker in mijn top 40), My favourite game van The Cardigans. Hun grootste hit in de top 40, maar niet bij mij; het steeds herhaalde rifje vind ik niet zo prettig om te horen, verder is het wel een prima popliedje, maar het haalt het toch niet bij Carnival. En om nog even verder te gaan, dit is ook hun laatste entry in mijn top 40.

1999 Wordt ook een mooi jaar.
Veel artiesten uit 1998 zijn weer van de partij.
Aangevuld met wat talent.
Kan niet misgaan, met dat jaar vóór de switch naar een nieuw millennium
Ik bedoel er verder helemaal niets mee

week 42 voor 1998 waar Jennifer nog stand houdt maar de concurrentie wel serieus wordt met Nilsson en Cardigans. Vier binnenkomers.
Meja, zweedse zangeres en schoolvoorbeeld eendagsvlieg. Geen idee of dat in dit geval terecht is; ik ken verder ook niks van haar eigenlijk. Dit is in elk geval een erg lekker nummer.
Elisa, italiaanse zangeres heeft de status eendagsvlieg nooit gehaald aangezien Sleeping in Your Hand en later Luce geen hits werden. Andere singles kregen al niet eens airplay, zoals deze toch gewoon een lekker pop/rock nummer.
REM had ik deze periode niet zoveel interesse meer in, een single als dit is dan ook niet echt iets om dat weer aan te wakkeren.
Aqua had natuurlijk de party hits maar bewezen met Turn Back Time wel meer te kunnen. Hun nieuwe gaat meer die kant op, jammer van die poging tot rap in de laatste minuut,

nieuw:
Bovenin weinig reuring, maar wellicht kunnen de 2 hoogste nieuwe binnenkomers daar de komende tijd verandering in brengen.

Bran van 3000's Afrodiziak was ik een beetje vergeten, maar kwam destijds vaak op Kink FM en bij herluistering vind ik hem wel heel erg tof. Met dank aan de Zweden, waar dit gewoon de hitlijst haalde. Van Hefner was dit lang het enige nummer dat ik echt goed vond. Destijds ontdekt via MTV's Alternative Nation en altijd verbaasd geweest dat dit niet veel bekender was. Ligt wel in lijn van hun vorige singles, maar vind deze wel een niveautje of 2 beter.

Met UNKLE's Rabbit In Your Headlight hebben we een controversiele videoclip te pakken. Destijds gecensureerd op MTV, nu gewoon op YouTube te zien. De clip leidde altijd wel een beetje af van het nummer, dat op zichzelf al erg goed is.

Talvin Singh's OK is ook een MTV Alt. Nation klassiekertje voor mij. Toffe mix tussen dance en Indiase muziek, inclusief sitar.

Two Lone Swordsmen (geweldige artiestennaam overigens) is een project van wijlen Andrew Weatherall. Sticky is een alternatieve danceplaat, maar zeker geen big beat. Het heeft gevoelsmatig wel een rauw post-punk-randje.
