Qua drukte even een stap op de plaats.
Toch aardig nieuwe binnenkomers, met de Black Crowes, de John Spencer Blues Explosion en Robbie Williams.
Ik heb in de basis helemaal geen slechte relatie met de songs van Williams maar in dit topic blijft het vaak een beetje met hem behelpen. Ik geef ook toe, de sympathie prijs gaat hij ook niet winnen.
Maar geen slechte song en geen cover van het aloude nummer van de Walker Brothers.

Mike Oldfield nog eens op één in 1998.
Kijk, dat zag ik nu absoluut niet aankomen. Maar verdiend is het.

UNKLE neemt de koppositie over. Verder slechts drie binnenkomers.

De hoogste is van een opvallend duo: Elvis Costello en de oude componist van talloze klassieke songs, Burt Bacharach (op dat moment 70 jaar). Elvis gaat zich meer dan ooit tevoren te buiten aan crooning, en daar moet je wel tegen kunnen. De song This house is empty now is een ouderwetse ballad met piano en strijkers, en had ook wel 40 jaar eerder geschreven kunnen zijn (wie weet is dat ook zo). Mooi is het zeker, maar het past niet echt in de tijdgeest van 1998, en een groot succes werd het niet.

Terwijl Daysleeper nog een laatste week op 40 staat, komt op 29 al de nieuwe R.E.M. binnen, Lotus. Het heeft natuurlijk de typische R.E.M.-sound, maar erg vlot klinkt het niet; het refrein is nogal afgemeten, en Michael zingt wat apart, schorachtig. De clip is ook erg sober, dus een hit werd het zeker niet.

De derde en laatste entry is voor Faithless met Take the long way home. Deze single heb ik sindsdien niet meer gehoord, maar het heeft de bekende flow van Maxi Jazz, en ook de beats ontbreken niet, maar het is net wat minder rechttoe rechtaan dan de grote hits, maar wel erg donker en sfeervol.

Eels met een van de meer uptempo tracks van het gitzwarte Electroshock Blues. Heerlijke originele uptempo tracks.

De rest zijn eigen allemaal ontdekkingen. Van Paul Weller heb ik alle 90s albums wel beluisterd en de meeste ook in bezit, maar deze single zei me niets meer en staat alleen op een Greatest Hits verzamelaar die dat jaar uitkwam. Wel een goed nummer met een no-nonsense tekst waarin iedereen zich kan herkennen.

Dead Prez kende ik alleen van naam, Best controversiele muziek, politiek beladen. Een soort RATM van de hiphop.

Pedro the Lion ken ik van het album uit 2000, eerder werk was me niet bekend. Mooie indierock/slowcore.

Scott Grooves is een Franse houseproducer die hier geremixt wordt door Daft Punk. In het thuisland zag ik deze de charts binnenkomen, daarbuiten heeft het volgens mij niet veel gedaan.

Op 1 december ontving ook ik het jaaroverzicht van Spotify. In mijn Top 3 staat The Fear van Pulp. Niet zo gek. Ik vind het hun beste nummer. Hij staat ook in mijn playlist van potentiele singles voor mijn weeklijsten in 1998. En daar bleef The Fear maar staan omdat de releasedatum nogal onduidelijk is. En Spotify maar streepjes zetten. Net als bij de discussie rond Is It Wicked Not To Care? van Belle & Sebastian gaat het om een promosingle. Nu toch maar in mijn lijst want hoort simpelweg bij de beste nummers van 1998.

I Can't Remember van Mogwai kwam ik tegen bij John Peel. Goed nummer. Is van een verzamel 7" uit Schotland. Het bestaat maar ik denk dat je er in die tijd niet aan kon komen. In 2000 opnieuw uitgebracht. Het nummer is wel goed vindbaar omdat het aan de re-releases van het Mogwai Young Team album is toegevoegd.

Bij herman staat I Need A Sign van Badly Drawn Boy in de lijst. Het nummer komt van EP3. Ik had het openingsnummer van die EP in mijn playlist staan. Een beetje een niemandalletje maar net te aardig om niet ten minste één weekje op te nemen.

Een ander fenomeen is de Japanse band Fishmans. In 1998 nog behoorlijk underground. Na de dood van zanger Shinji Sato in 1999 is de band langzamerhand uitgegroeid tot een cult fenomeen. Op Rate Your Music staat hun album Long Season uit 1996 zelfs op 1. Dit Yurameki in the Air is hun laatste single bij leven en welzijn en staat op nummer 13 bij de singles uit 1998 van RYM. De Dream Pop, Ambient Pop en/of Neo-Psychedelia is zeker de moeite waard. Maar zo hoog zal het bij mij niet komen. Je moet wel in de stemming zijn voor de muziek van Fishmans. Het past in mijn ogen daarom ook minder goed in een algemene (play-)lijst.

De gezamenlijke top 20 volgt vrijdag.

Ik ga helemaal mee met 50tracks inzake Creed en helemaal met Pulp.
Dan heb ik daar nog bij de Barenaked ladies (naam van de band is altijd leuk zoeken op youtube) en een Canadese band, Sloan. Van harte aan te bevelen, deze nieuwe single. Ik moet voor mezelf terug naar 1993 om wat van ze terug te halen.
Toch is het een band die als sinds begin jaren '90 regelmatig met nieuwe albums komt. Tot 2022 aan toe.

Veel stationaire platen, we zitten al duidelijk in de kerstperiode, met weinig vernieuwing.

Op 23 ook bij mij het debuut van Mercury Rev, Goddess on a highway. De tekst woordspeelt duidelijk met Goddess en got us, zodanig dat ik de song eerst noteerde als Goddess on a highway, maar bij scherpe beluistering van de tekst later als Got us on a highway (wat ook gezongen wordt). Maar Goddess is correct. En overigens, highway wordt gespeld als 'hiway', (voor de fijnproevers). De muziek wordt getypeerd door de opvallende zang van Jonathan Donahue (vaak tegen het valse aan) en een rijke orkestratie. Deze song is waarschijnlijk de bekendste van de band, maar ze gaan bij mij nog een veel grotere hit scoren, die top 5 aller tijden wordt...

Op 28 de Nederlandse zangeres E'velyne, waarnaar ik best even moest zoeken op Youtube en internet, want met de spelling Evelyn kom je er niet. De single I would haalde de Nederlandse tipparade en is een traditionele ballad die het met Kerst extra goed doet. Hierna nog maar weinig van haar gehoord.

Op 30 Extince met Viervoeters. En daar is iets heel raars mee aan de hand. Terwijl het een behoorlijk succes was, zijn op een na grootste hit, kan ik hem niet vinden op Youtube (alleen de lyrics zonder geluid, een verschrikkelijke live opname en enkele covers), en sterker nog, ook niet op Spotify. Is die soms ooit geband, om de tekst of om een sample? Extince vertelt smakelijke anekdotes over zichzelf met originele uitdrukkingen en rijmwoorden, ik weet niet wat hiermee aan de hand is.

Robbie Williams levert singles aan de lopende band af, maar het worden niet allemaal hits. Deze No regrets is een prima ballad met een sterk refrein, met een wat sombere inslag, wat misschien niet goed past bij zo'n popster. En op de achtergrond hoor ik zomaar Neil Tennant zingen; dan zullen de Pet Shop Boys het ook wel geproduceerd hebben. (Toch niet.)

Op 36 zien we ook nog een vrolijk popdeuntje van boyband 98 Degrees, True to your heart. Het liedje onderscheidt zich van de bulk van dit soort songs door de bijdragen van Stevie Wonder, hij speelt mondharmonica en zingt flink mee; maar het blijft wel een 98 Degrees-song. Meteen hun grootste succes. Overigens is dit ook voor Stevie Wonder zijn laatste notering in mijn lijst.
