En weer een nieuwe week. Waarbij aangetekend de eennadelaatste van het jaar 1998. Dan zit het er weer op. Volgende week de laatste en de top 100 van het jaar 1998!

Mercury Rev, gevonden door ranboy klopt helemaal, releasedatum al in november. Ik had hem pas staan in 1999.
De onsmakelijke afgesneden vinger hoort uiteraard bij de nieuwe single van Beck. En die is heel wat beter dan de foto van het hoesje, verrassend en afwisselend. Bij Korn had je het misschien nog mogen verwachten. Maar niet bij Beck.

3 Colours Red is ook echt heel sterk. Kom je ook zo vaak niet meer tegen, die band. Boo Radleys tonen zich van een hele vriendelijke kant, dit keer.

Mooi dat ik je aan die song geholpen heb, maar ik zag hem ook al bij enkele andere deelnemers staan .

Ja, ik kijk elke week bij de nieuwe binnenkomers van iedereen.

Bovenin gebeurt niet zo veel spannends, maar bij de binnenkomers wel.

Mijn schrift van december 1998 vermeldt op 28 'Wanna be' van Underground. Dit is niet te vinden. Later heb ik wel gedacht dat het Underworld moest zijn, maar ook dit is nergens te vinden. Hierna volgt een bescheiden chartrun, wat erop duidt dat ik hem nooit meer gehoord heb. Ik weet dus niet wat het is en het zou ook ouder kunnen zijn (dan heb ik hem maar één keer op de radio gehoord). Wie hier iets zinvols van weet te maken, krijgt mijn dank.

Op 30 staat Baaba Maal (zijn enige entry bij mij), een Senegalese zanger die met de inbreng van een westerse zangeres en Engelse lyrics lonkt naar hitsucces; dat is niet echt gelukt maar het is wel een vlot, dansbaar maar toch ook exotisch liedje geworden, een beetje à la Youssou N'Dour en Neneh Cherry, maar dan wat meer dance.

Op 33 zijn we weer op bekend terrein met Bryan Adams die een opmerkelijke samenwerking aangaat met Melanie C. (van The Spice Girls). Het werd een grote hit, Bryans laatste top 10 hit, en ook bij mij scoorde het aardig (en tevens zijn laatste entry bij mij). Als ik me niet vergis is dit geen duet in de gebruikelijke zin, maar zingen Bryan en Melanie (bijna) de hele song tweestemmig (en dus niet om beurten). Een vlotte song waar (dacht ik) niemand zich aan stoort.

En op 35 een nog grotere hit, van rapper Jay-Z, zijn doorbraakhit in Nederland en een van zijn twee entry's bij mij. Natuurlijk valt de song op door de sample van Hard knock life uit de musical Annie; verder horen we de Jay-Z rappen op een eenvoudige beat. De onverwachte combinatie zorgde voor de aandacht en de hit.

Ook hier wat bubbling unders die het in een drukkere periode niet gehaald zouden hebben.

The Gathering heb ik nooit erg meer gevolgd na Strange Machines, maar Liberty Bell kwam regelmatig langs op Kink FM en het bijbehorende album heb ik destijds een tijdlang te leen gehad van een vriend. Blijft een goed nummer, maar de gladde pompeuze productie had achteraf wel beter gekund.

Super Furry Animals scoren een van hun grootste hits met een nummer dat oorspronkelijk als b-side bedoeld was, maar niet werd uitgebracht omdat het rechtmatig gebruik van Steely Dan-sample die erin zit niet op tijd geregeld was. Toen dat eenmaal wel het geval was, hebben ze er maar een a-kant van gemaakt. Verder een geinig Wiki-weetje:


Gorki bracht ook nog het titelnummer van Ik Ben Aanwezig uit als laatste single van dat album. Een mooie ingetogen song waarop Tom Barman (in het Nederlands) nog een stukje meezingt.

Hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is Belle & Sebastian, met een van de eerste (zo niet het eerste) nummer waarmee ik ze leerde kennen, van de gelijknamige EP. Van die EP werd ook Slow Graffiti nog gedraaid op Kink FM en die is praktisch net zo goed en mag ook mee op de playlist.

Dat laatste zou wel eens kunnen kloppen. Ik heb niets met Bryan Adams, maar dit vind ik met voorsprong zijn leukste 90s hit.

De laatste lijst van het jaar 1998.
Met nog steeds hele fraaie nieuwelingen.

Dan zal ik gelijk het gelijknamige album Six van Mansun voor mezelf uitroepen tot album van het jaar. De singles die er van af zijn gekomen zijn werkelijk geweldig geweest. Nu ook weer de titelsong. Er is een single versie van vier minuten. Maar ik hou gewoon de acht minuten versie aan. Meer dan waard om uit te zitten.

En dan wordt er misschien niet zo snel aan Black Sabbath gedacht, maar ook zij hebben weer een prima song uitgebracht. Album heet Reunion, blij dat ze in ieder geval weer terug zijn.

Ook een prima rocker van Living End. Het is minder gepolijst dan Sugar Ray. Die band heeft zeker geen slechte song uitgebracht maar ik las wel dat het ook een hele grote hit zal gaan worden (in de VS). Dus daar ben ik het dan weer eens eens, met de hitlijst. Morgen de Top 100 van het jaar voor mij.

Ik vond het echt een prachtig jaar. Heel veel weer opgepakt, herontdekt en voor het eerst voorbij horen komen. Helemaal waar dit topic ook voor is bedoeld.

Aan het eind van het jaar toch nog een prachtige binnenkomer: The Gathering met Liberty bell. Aan hits deed de band niet meer (na Strange machines), maar de muziek was van de hoogste kwaliteit. Liberty bell heeft wat meer tempo en valt niet echt meer onder metal, maar vooral de zang van Anneke van Giersbergen stuwt dit liedje naar grote hoogten. En tot mijn verbazing zag ik dat er meer dan 1 miljoen views voor deze video zijn op Youtube, wat maar aangeeft dat deze band internationaal goed scoorde.

En ook de tweede entry mag er zijn: de tweede titel van Fatboy Slim in mijn lijsten, Praise you. In mijn schrift stond nog twee weken You've come a long way baby als titel, wat min of meer de beginregel is van deze song maar vooral de titel van het album. Praise you is een aanstekelijk en dansbaar nummer, met de nodige samples. Vooral de clip is beroemd, met een soort flashmob die op straat danst. Na Rockafeller skank was hiermee zijn naam wel definitief gevestigd.

Op 35 vinden we een nog bekendere song: Pretty fly (for a white guy) van de Amerikaanse punk(rock)band The Offspring. Als dit punk genoemd kan worden, zal dit wel het grootste commerciële succes van dit genre in Nederland zijn, het werd een flinke nummer 1 hit. Dit uptempo vrolijke satirische lied gaat over een (blanke) jongen die hip probeert te doen maar daar niet helemaal in slaagt. Dankzij een herkenbare riff, felle damesvocalen en de wat overenthousiaste zang sloeg het breed aan.

Als laatste komt Faith Hill binnen, de Amerikaanse countryzangeres die steeds poppier werd (waar hebben we dat meer gehoord?) en met This kiss haar eerste succes in Nederland haalde, en bij mij (en bij mij ook de laatste notering). This kiss is een vlotte midtempoballad, verluchtigd met de typische steel guitar klanken die je in de countrymuziek vaak hoort, maar verder een gewoon popliedje, dat ongetwijfeld profiteerde van het feit dat er in deze dagen weinig nieuws te horen was...

Volgende week op 30 december volgt er gewoon een nieuwe top 40 van mij, dus nog geen jaaroverzicht.

Normaal interesseert het me eigenlijk weinig en ik heb net bij 1979 mezelf ook even op de vingers getikt maar musician Freak on a leash kan bij mijn weten nog lang niet charten.
Met wat gegoogle zie je wel steeds 1998 maar dat lijkt meer te verwijzen dat het op Follow the leader staat uit 1998.

Ik heb hier een hele specifieke releasedatum bij de single:
Freak on a leash
Wat ook resulteert in een notering in de beste singles van 1998.
Ik ben het met je eens, dat er verschillen bestaan tussen de diverse bronnen. En het is vrij moeilijk daar tussen te laveren.
De Korn fans zien geen aanleiding e.e.a. te laten corrigeren.
Je houdt het verschil ook altijd tussen een releasedatum en wanneer iets dan uiteindelijk in een lijst staat. Er zit ook weinig logica in bij 9 maanden verschil tussen de eerste single van het Follow the leader album en de tweede, als dat een hit wordt. En welke datum hou je dan uiteindelijk aan.

Nog een weekje met een aantal lekkere kliekjes.

Maar liefst twee keer een bruggetje naar het 1979 topic. Class of '99 was een zogenaamde supergroep uit de Amerikaanse alternative rock scene met Layne Staley (zanger Alice in Chains), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction), Martyn LeNoble (Porno for Pyros) en Matt Serletic (Matchbox Twenty). De Pink Floyd cover is gemaakt voor de soundtrack van de science-fiction horror film The Faculty. Aardig gedaan maar het orgineel is beter.

Sinéad O'Connor doet een ABBA-cover voor het goede doel. Chiquitita is het hoogte punt van het album Across The Bridge Of Hope' In aid of the Omagh Fund ten behoeve van slachtoffers van een bomaanslag in Ierland in 1998. Verder de usual Ierse artiesten met bekend nummers op het album (Van Morrison; U2; Ash; Enya; Boyzone).

De Festive 50 van John Peel gaf een aantal nummers die ik eerder dit jaar gemist had zoals Alison's Room van 60 Ft Dolls en Amateur Photographer van The Samurai Seven (van een verzamel single (The Joy Of Plecs EP))

Golden Smog is ook een soort superband maar dan van alt. country artiesten. Op dit nummer doen o.a. Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), Dan Murphy (Soul Asylum), Jody Stephens (Big Star) en Marc Perlman (The Jayhawks) mee. Until You Came Along is geschreven en gezongen door Jayhawks oprichter Gary Louris. En dat is te horen past zo op een Jayhawks album.

Nog meer covers. Bij musician komt de Arthur Alexander cover Soldier of Love (Lay Down Your Arms) van Pearl Jam binnen (er bestaat ooke een leuke Beatles versie uit 1963 van dit nummer). Dit staat op een kerstsingle die Pearl Jam aan de leden van de fanclub stuurde. Jaarlijks gaven ze een speciaal kerstitem weg. Op kant twee staat de smartlap Last Kiss. Dit werd een live favoriet (ook van mij). Beide nummers worden in juni 1999 gedoneerd aan een charity album: No Boundaries: A Benefit for the Kosovar Refugees. Dat album heb ik best veel gedraaid met, en we maken de cirkel weer mooi rond, daar ook op Freak on a Leash van Korn. De single krijgt dan ook een commerciele release met Last Kiss dan als A-kant. Soldier of Love. Het wordt een van de meest succesvolle singles van de band (#2 in de Billboard 100).

In 1996 schreef Elvis Costello samen met de eerder dit jaar overleden Burt Bacharach voor de film Grace of My Heart een nummer. Dat beviel zo goed dat ze samen een heel album maakten: Painted from Memory. Dat album krijgt in 1999 nog een vervolg met jazz-versies van van de nummers van dat album, waarop Elvis Costello ook op een paar nummers zingt.
