De song van Skipper Wise, die door sommigen als guilty pleasure/fout wordt beschouwd, bereikt zelfs de eerste plek. Ik hoor er uiteraard niets fouts in.
Niet verrassend (na mijn bespreking van vorige week, stijgen de Distant Cousins van 24 naar 9. Helaas nog weinig navolging bij mijn collega's (één 'sympathie' entry op nummer 40).

Vijf binnenkomers, en ditmaal allemaal achter elkaar; dat wil zeggen: geen uitschieters. Op 32 weer een maatschappijkritisch lied van Midnight Oil. Goed gedaan, maar niet verrassend.

Op 33 een (achteraf) wel heel erg clichématig liefdesliedje van Linda Ronstadt en Aaron Neville. Het is dat beiden zingen als nachtegaaltjes, anders was het niet te verteren.

Op 34 een minder bekende representant van de Keltische rock (Simple Minds, U2, Big Country, Waterboys), Energy Orchard. Het is niet zo pakkend en commercieel, maar heeft een goede opbouw, een sterke sound en gedragen zang. En aangezien het Belfast heet, zal het ook wel een geëngageerde tekst hebben.

Op 35 de bekende cover van Stevie Wonders Higher ground, door de Red Hot Chili Peppers. Nog swingender uptempo dan het origineel, en bij de versnelling aan het eind gaat het dat eraf!

Op 36 alweer Wet Wet Wet, hofleverancier van vergeten hitjes. Hold back the river klinkt toch sterk, een krachtig refrein. Ik vraag me zelfs af of het misschien een cover is.

Flinke vernieuwing in de lijst deze week met 9 nieuwe binnenkomers. En dan staan er nog zo'n 20 prachtige tips klaar. Ik zou wel uit kunnen breiden naar een top 60...

De bovenste heb ik ook daadwerkelijk op 7"-single, zij het pas later gekocht. Prachtig hoe Andrew Weatherall het toch al niet misselijke I'm Losing More Than I'll Ever Have heeft omgebouwd. Primal Scream zal vanaf nu wel een vaste waarde worden in mijn lijstje.

Obscurity Knocks moest ik eerst een beetje leren kennen, maar ik hoor er nu zeker het mooie liedje in dat het is. Doet me ergens ook wel wat aan Go-Betweens denken.

De singles van Paul McCartney vond ik steevast wat flauw en oubollig, maar Put It There is een schitterend klein liedje (beetje a la Blackbird) van 2 minuten.

Electribe 101 is een houseproductie van Frankie Knuckles met zwoele vocalen van Billy Ray Martin, die een paar jaar later nog een Nederlandse Top 40 hit zou scoren met Put Your Loving Arms. Erg smaakvolle ingetogen houseplaat, eigenlijk een van de beste dingen die ik van Knuckles gehoord heb. Gaat zeker nog stijgen.

Het nummer van Tom Petty is alom bekend denk ik. Gewoon erg mooi, net zoals al zijn hits in deze tijd. Erg genietbare stem heeft deze man ook eigenlijk, zou misschien eens een album van hem moeten opzoeken.

Wedding Present werd al aangekondigd door The Blue Aeroplanes die ik ook over een brassneck zingen. Tof bandje dit ook. Eigenlijk pas vorig jaar echt naar begonnen te luisteren.

The Stranglers komen met een leuke cover van 96 Tears. Het orgeltje is natuurlijk present.

Big Daddy Kane komt met een gezellige hiphopplaat die het wel erg moet hebben van de sample van het gelijknamige jaren '70 disco nummer van McFadden & Whitehead.

Fast Eddie brengt de betere hiphouse. Dit is eigenlijk gewoon een plaat van James Brown versneld afgespeeld met een beat eronder en raps erover, maar het werkt erg goed. Na Git Up zijn beste nummer.

Tipparade: week 8 van 1990.

1. Michael Bolton - How Am I Supposed To Live Without You
Dit soort gladde slijmballads laat ik liever aan mij voorbij gaan. Sorry, MuMe-users maar ik kan het niet helpen.
Cijfer: 2,5

24. Laid Back - Bakerman
Laid Back (een Zweede band?) kan ik vooral van de hit Sunshine Reggae uit 1983. Eerlijk gezegd vind ik dit iets beter, kleurrijker gearrangeerd en het heeft ook een zekere spanning. Leuke clip ook, moet wel veel hebben gekost.
Cijfer: 7

25. Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mine
2 jaar na het uitstekende Beds are Burning scoort Midnight Oil opnieuw een hit. Weliswaar minder bekend maar nauwelijks minder door de passie, de maatschappijkritische tekst en uitstekende, heldere productie. Het heeft ook een beetje weg van R.E.M..

26. Iggy Pop - Livin' On The Edge Of The Night
Punkkoning Iggy Pop brengt een akoestisch nummer met de nodige (duistere) sfeer waarbij zijn lijzige stem goed tot zijn recht komt. Een beschaafdere maar niet mindere Iggy Pop.
Cijfer: 8

27. Giant - I'm A Believer
Redelijke hardrock met sterke krachtige zang maar ook wat cliché en te weinig eigenheid en de wat gladde AOR-productie inclusief die steriele drums gooien roet in het eten.
Cijfer: 5,5

28. Lonnie Gordon - Happenin' All Over Again
De krachtige soulzang is een pluspunt maar verder is het nummer en vooral de productie te cliché (is dat een Stock, Aitken & Waterman-productie?).
Cijfer: 5

29. Patrick Bruel - Casser La Voix
In Frankrijk een grote naam maar veel heb ik nooit van dit nummer gehouden. Meer bombast en theatraliteit dan emotie.
Cijfer: 5,5

30. Lenny Kravitz - I Build This Garden For Us
Doet mij aan the Beatles denken door de arrangementen, het had inderdaad in hun repertoire gepast. Retro maar fris klinkend.

Voor de tweede week op rij komt er een nummer direct mijn top 10 binnen. Loaded is dan ook een gigantische klassieker, ook in huize ArthurDZ, dus dat wordt nog spannend voor Depeche Mode. Zij hebben nu Camper Van Beethoven wel van de troon gestoten, maar naast de hoge binnenkomst van Loaded is het ook nog opletten geblazen voor het fantastische Birdhouse In Your Soul. En dan zitten de Trash Can Sinatras ook nog eens stevig in de lift!

Ik ben trouwens benieuwd hoe Primal Scream het in de algemene lijst gaat doen, en of ze het Depeche Mode wat moeilijk gaan maken in de strijd om de eerste plaats. Shine On houdt het sowieso niet veel langer meer vol op nummer 1...

Twee van deze drie gaan op 1 komen, de derde haalt mijn top 10 niet eens. En waarschijnlijk raden jullie de verkeerde plaat die mijn top 10 niet haalt...

Dan zal het Enjoy the Silence wel zijn

Every beat of the heart van The Railway Children is een mooie tip maar volgens mij wat prematuur want een single release van op z'n vroegst juni dit 1990 (of zelfs uit 1991 volgens UMD) of heb ik het helemaal mis?

Mooie nieuwe binnenkomers van Murphy, The Church en The Bats! Die gaan het goed doen bij mij!

Duidelijk,

Wel bijzonder want dat zelfde UMD meld hier: UMD Railway Children dat het een nummer uit 1991 is.

Dat is de rerelease. Het valt me wel vaker op dat UMD niet volledig is.

Het is in ieder geval de eerste single van hun derde album, Native Place, uit 1990:

Depeche Mode gaat na deze week ruim aan de leiding met een puntenrecord volgens mij. Daar zullen ze denk ik nog wel even blijven, of Primal Scream (deze week nog 28e) moet echt hoge ogen gaan gooien.

Verder geen schokkende veranderingen. Wel mooie nieuwe entries voor de debuutsingles van The Charlatans en The Trash Can Sinatras en de Amerikanen van They Might Be Giants en Skipper Wise. Ik verwacht die eerste drie volgende week wel in de top 10 eigenlijk.

Ook deze week weer een mooie week, met zeven mooie nieuwe songs.

Lush komt met een geweldige nieuwe single, De-Luxe, een van hun allerbeste songs wat mij betreft.
Toch wel een van mijn favoriete nieuwe bandjes toen, begin jaren 90.

Gold Afternoon Fix vond ik wat tegenvallen toen-ie uitkwam, maar eerste single Metropolis kwam wel meteen goed binnen. Het is geen Under the Milkyway (maar wat wel?), maar wel een van The Church' beste 90s-singles.

Van Erasure vind ik sowieso de eerste 20 singles wel goed (verenigd op hun compilatie-album Pop! the First 20 Hits), maar Blue Savannah hoort daarbij zeker in mijn top-5. Heerlijk mellow nummer.

Voeg daarbij nog de beste solo-single van Peter Murphy, de heerlijke Chills-achtige Nieuw-Zeelandse pop van The Bats, de fijne Italo-house van Black Box en de mooie 3e single van The Sensual World en je hebt van doen met een uiterst fijn weekje releases.

Zes nieuwe binnenkomers deze week met daaronder alweer een nieuwe single van The Mission terwijl de vorige (bij mij) nog dik in de Top 10 staat. Verder een erg hoge binnenkomer voor zo'n beetje het beste liedje van Erasure. Net zoals johan de witt ben ik best een fan van de singles van deze band. Dit is echt een prachtige liedje, beetje sprookjes achtig. In 1991 zou Erasure nog een paar klappers maken (o.a. Chorus, Am I Right? en Love to Hate You en daarna was helaas de koek op. Ze bleven wel nog aardig wat albums maken en singles uitbrengen maar het niveau 1988 (Stop!) t/m 1991 haalden ze niet meer. De wat naar de jaren '60 neigende single van Lenny was er ook weer zo'n eentje die ik toen gekocht heb.

Op 24 komt Billy Joel met zijn derde single van zijn succesvolle album nu ook bij mij binnen. I go to extremes is (weer) een uitstekende song, ditmaal stevig rockend en met passie gezongen. Helaas werd dit geen hit meer en hoor je hem niet meer zo vaak als Leningrad en We didn't start the fire.

Op 34 dance-act Cry Sisco. Afro dizzi act klinkt als een bij elkaar gesampled plaatje, in de stijl van Pump up the volume, waarvan ik achteraf niet helemaal begrijp dat ik hem in mijn top 40 heb gezet.

Fatal Flowers rocken ouderwets op 35, en veel meer valt er niet over te zeggen.

Op 36 haalt Janet Jackson mijn top 40 (geen vanzelfsprekendheid) met een lichtvoetig en swingend geheel.

Nieuw binnen:
McCarthy, een bandje met Tim Gane en Laetitia Sadier die later in 1990 Stereolab zouden oprichten. Dit nummer doet me echter meer aan bands als Gang of Four denken.

Lush ontdekte ik pas ten tijden van Lovelife, toen het shoegaze-element al wel grotendeels van de muziek af was. Maar ook ouder werk vind ik tof. Gala, de verzamelaar van hun eerste ep's, staat hier in de kast, maar heb ik nooit zo veel gedraaid. Daar mag nu wel eens verandering in komen. De-Luxe is alvast een goede aanzet, sterk nummer.

Kate Bush komt met een goede derde single van haar laatste album. Vind deze een stuk beter dan This Woman's Work.

Black Box: niet zo sterk als Ride On Time, maar toch wel weer een fijn staaltje italohouse.

The Church ken ik niet of nauwelijks op een paar nummers na, maar Metropolis gaat er goed in. Toch maar eens wat meer naar gaan luisteren, wil ik een beetje beslagen ten ijs komen als ik ze over een paar maanden op Primavera Sound ga zien.

Belinda Carlisle komt ten slotte met een lekkere bombastische 80s popsingle.

Mooi! Wist niet dat ze naar Europa kwamen. Hopelijk gaan ze, net als The Replacements, ook even langs Amsterdam. Toch een band die ik graag nog een keer live wil zien.

Heerlijk nummer wat volgens mij alleen in Nederland werd (en anders werd het hier als eerste een hit, zoals met wel meer nummers)

Lois Lane-Fortune fairytales
Ik was in de jaren 90 dol op de luchtige pop van Lois Lane en had ook beide cd's van ze. Die liefde is wel ietsjes bekoeld, maar dit blijft een lekker nummer

Wet Wet Wet-Hold back the river
Zwijmelsoul maar dan wel van een hogere soort, welke ik pas een aantal jaar later ben gaan waarderen

Slechts twee nieuwe binnenkomers, volgende week zullen het er zeker meer worden, met zeker de nieuwe van Quincy Jones, die hiervoor al is binnengekomen in de lijst van 50tracks .

Roxette deed het bij mij in die jaren enorm goed. Getuige ook hun Look Sharp! (1988) album in mijn top 10.

Maar wat een verademing was de nieuwe van The Temptations...Soul to Soul in die tijd. Toen vond ik het al aardig, sinds die tijd is dat nummer enorm gaan groeien. Hierna zouden er toch wat warrige jaren volgen met de dood van de voormalige oprichters David Ruffin (in 1991) en Eddie Kendricks (in 1992). Gevolgd in 1995 door de dood van bestaand lid (en mede-oprichter) Melvin Franklin (mijn favoriete Temp, met een van de mooiste diepe bassstemmen in de muziekgeschiedenis). In 1991 hadden ze ook nog een prima hitje met The Jones'.
Tegenwoordig is alleen Otis Williams nog in leven van de originele oprichters, hij zingt nog steeds mee met optredens van The Temptations, die dus nogal eens van samenstelling zijn gewijzigd.

De hit versie was de live versie van anderhalf jaar later.

Prima nieuwe singles, ik kan bij tijd en wijle nog steeds kippenvel krijgen van de Nederlandse band Fatal Flowers. Na een paar jaar geheel uit het zicht verdwenen maar ze hebben eind jaren '80 en begin jaren '90 prima werk gemaakt.
Een single als How many times, een cover overigens, zou mij zonder 50tracks helaas geheel zijn ontgaan.

De herrie/powerpop van The Cult en de gedistingeerde, smaakvolle Kate Bush spreken verder voor zich.

Oei, 50tracks stond net met zijn lijst boven die van mij deze week, dus daar viel het mij direct op.......

Mooi nummer inderdaad, maar geen cover toch? Misschien ben je in de war met de volgende single, Both Ends Burning (Roxy Music). Ook erg goed trouwens
