Dit is ook gelijk de lijst voor week 31.

week 30 voor 1999 waar het zowaar dringen in de top 10 is. Kristin blijft wel op 1, verder stijgt vooral Madder Rose snel. Vijf binnenkomers.
Moloko kende ik voor deze single van Fun for Me, meer alt dance dan deze, maar deze is ook nog wel erg fijn.
De timing van NIN of zo vlak voor de eeuwwisseling, als de hele media al bezig is met terugblikken op decennium en eeuw, met een triple lp te komen heb ik nooit gesnapt. De eerste single werkt op het album erg goed, als losse single is het toch wel een moeilijk nummer.
Robyn met de opvolger van Electric, minder spannend maar wel herkenbaar.
Shakira komt met nog een single van het Donded estas etc waar al meer singles mijn lijst gehaald hebben, dit is niet de beste met de gezellige samenzang maar toch wel ok.

Bijna was het Paula Abdul geweest die dit nummer zong, maar uiteindelijk ging het naar Christina Aguilera. Ze was er niet direct enthousiast over, maar dat is inmiddels veranderd. Blijkbaar was het nummer in de VS controversieel, en in Maleisië zelfs verboden, want het nummer zou over seks gaan en een 18-jarige die over seks zingt is voor sommigen reden om overstuur te raken.

Louter bekende namen deze week, met natuurlijk Nightwish en Gay Dad als echte artiesten van het jaar 1999.
Maar de kwaliteit mag er weer wezen, met een stevige Our Lady Peace, weer een prachtige van Travis. Feeder en de Doves zijn inmiddels erkende maar ook hooggewaardeerde terugkerende acts. Mooie songs.

Vier nieuwe deze week. Supergrass komt erg hoog binnen op 14 met Moving. Hun repertoire kun je grofweg in twee soorten muziek indelen: vlotte geinige liedjes en wonderschone dromerige liedjes. Het hoeft niet te verbazen dat ik vooral van het tweede soort gecharmeerd ben. En Moving is het perfecte voorbeeld, met heldere gitaar, prima zangstem en ter afwisseling ook een wat steviger swingend stukje erin is het een heerlijke zomersingle.

Over The Chemical Brothers kan ik toevallig iets vergelijkbaars zeggen: enerzijds liedjes met de nadruk op de beats (wat voor mij ten koste gaat van het liedje, zoals bv Blockrocking beats, of Rockblocking beats, dat kan ik nooit uit elkaar houden), en liedjes met een melodie, en evengoed een meeslepend ritme, zoals Let forever be. En die laatste wordt nu ook nog vergezeld van een uiterst creatieve clip waarvan je je blijft afvragen, hoe hebben ze dat gedaan?; en op een of andere manier past het perfect bij de wat vervreemdende, verschuivende muziek. Wat mij betreft hun beste song.

Op 37 Limp Bizkit met Nookie, hun doorbraak in Nederland en bij mij. De Amerikaanse band maakt nu metal met veel rap, en was samen met Linkin Park (en Korn) hiervan de bekendste vertegenwoordiger. Nookie is inderdaad stevig, maar ook swingend en pakkend, en vooral in de VS een groot succes.

Silverchair heeft bij nooit grote hits gescoord, maar wel wat kleinere. Ik dacht dat ze oorspronkelijk wel in de grungehoek werden ingedeeld, maar op Ana's song is dat niet meer terug te horen; het is een stevige ballad, intens gezongen. Ineens begrijp ik dat Ana een aanduiding is voor anorexia nervosa, en ik lees dat de zanger hier zelf aan leed toen hij dit schreef; dat maakt het nog wat intenser.

week 31 voor 1999 waar Kristin op 1 blijft, wie gaat haar opvolgen? Ik weet het nog niet.
Vier binnenkomers.
Stretch Princess is een britse band waarvan ik het eerste album (goedkoop) op de gok heb gekocht, dat beviel prima. Doet wat denken aan Veruca Salt of K's choice. Sorry komt van dat album en heeft een clip gekregen toen het op de soundtrack van Teaching Mrs Tingle terecht kwam. Toch het hele album weer eens draaien.
In tegenstelling tot ranboy hou ik meer van de beats van Chemical Brothers, maar een nummer met gastzang is ook niet verkeerd. Ok Liam op Setting Sun was nog wel wat anders dan broertje Noel hier laat horen maar toch prima gedaan.
Bij elke andere solozanger zou ik met een grote boog om een nummer als She heenlopen, maar Elvis heeft toch wel eits. Die bekende stem leent zich gewoon erg goed voor dit nummer.
The Offspring, tja, de eerste paar singles vond ik destijds erg goed. De laatste paar weken zat ik voor een andere site in 1976 met singles van Ramones, Saints, Sexpistols en Damned, daarmee vergeleken is dit wel erg slap. Maar ja, andere tijden.

Opmerking over vorige week: ik zie nu dat ik in de lijst van vorige week bij een aantal platen verkeerde noteringen in Excel heb gezet, en dus hier ook verkeerd geplaatst. Ergste slachtoffer is Tsunami, dat vorige week op 4 had moeten staan, terwijl ik 16 had ingegeven (dat had een 2e plek in de gezamenlijke opgeleverd, in plaats van zakken naar 4). Hiervoor mijn excuses. Nu staat alles goed, ook de posities onder 'vorige week'.

De hoogste nieuwe is voor Apollo Four Forty met het puntige, misschien wat Daft Punk-achtige Stop the rock. Wel aanstekelijk, maar wel wat te weinig gevarieerd.
Op 32 het heerlijke dromerige At the river van Groove Armada, met een terugkerend escapistisch refrein en prettige blazers en een lome beat. Dat mocht wel langer duren.
Op 34 de bekende hit van Moloko, Sing it back (nee, niet Bring it back); het swingt behoorlijk en de wat mechanische mannenstem geeft er ook wat reliëf aan.
En op 36 Tal Bachman met zijn doorbraakhit She's so high (wat mij betreft ook zijn enige hit), een erg vlotte song en wereldwijd een hit. De Canadees is de zoon van Randy Bachman van Bachman-Turner Overdrive en speelt overigens nu ook zelf in deze band.
