Na de vakantie nog niet naar mijn tiplijst geluisterd, maar om toch enige vernieuwing in mijn lijst te hebben toch 5 nummers eruitgeplukt en beluisterd waarvan ik wist dat die zeker mijn lijst zouden halen.

Hoogste nieuwe is een van mijn favoriete nummers van Badly Drawn Boy, een nummer dat ik later pas leerde kennen, maar nog regelmatig naar terugkeer. Prachtig intro ook.

Ben Christophers is een debutant. Destijds al even kort live gehoord tijdens London Calling in een tijd waarin ook veel niet-Britpop werd geprogrammeerd. Een man met breekbare stem, gitaar en elektronica en destijds wel een kleine hype in mijn muzikale omgeving. Uiteindelijk een van de artiesten die ik het vaakst live heb gezien, toch wel een keer of 7 a 8 denk ik. Inmiddels is hij volgens mij meer actief als schrijver achter de schermen, o.a. voor Bat for Lashes. Maar zijn eigen werk blijft toch het mooiste.

Supergrass en Texas scoren op hun manier met een fijn zomers uptempo werkje. Nummers die met deze temperaturen net even wat meer doen.

Super Furry Animals doen het rustig aan met het lieve Fire in my Heart.

Wat een fraai rijtje nieuwe binnenkomers in de Gezamenlijke top 20

Ik ben benieuwd wat musician kijkend naar zijn huidige nummer 1 over een paar maanden gaat doen met Maria Maria , dan gaat hij toch van het ge-effende pad als die opduikt

Supernatural is een heel gelikt Santana album met heel wat bonte muzikale stijlen.
Daar ligt misschien wel de sleutel van het grote succes.
Je kunt er ook mooi van pikken wat je wilt hebben.
En ik vind Maria Maria eigenlijk niet eens zo erg. Ja, het wijkt sterk af van het geijkte gitaarwerk van Santana.
Het album had van mij sterk mogen ingekort, dat is weer wat anders

Ik ben en blijf toch altijd onder de indruk van al het plaatwerk van Placebo, ook weer van hun nieuwe single Without you I'm nothing.

Het gelijknamige album is zonder David Bowie maar voor de gelegenheid, deze single, schoof hij graag bij Brian Molko van Placebo aan. De vocalen sluiten naadloos bij elkaar aan, net als de muziek van Placebo zelf als begeleidingsband van David Bowie.
Mooi dat Bowie de handschoen opnam, ik weet niet hoe de samenwerking tot stand is gekomen, maar het is een mooie song geworden.

En dan zijn in 2024 nog heel wat eind zeventigers, begin tachtigers actief. Ik dacht dat de Moody Blues zich daar ook nog bij zouden kunnen scharen. Zouden ze willen. Maar van die band zijn er toch al veel overleden. Zanger Justin Hayward leeft nog. John Lodge. Zij hebben samen al eens een album gemaakt in 1975. En ze zouden Patrick Moraz nog kunnen vragen. Maar de overige leden van de band zijn overleden.
De Moody Blues zouden de 21e eeuw niet halen, even afgezien van een soort kerstalbum met covers in 2003. Feitelijk is dit een soort van zwanenzang. Een titel met sunset er in. Hoewel het nummer helemaal niet slecht is.

En dan is er nog een andere mooie ontwikkeling gaande in 1999, die van Gomez en Dover. Prima singles ook hier.

Terwijll She's in fashion op de weg terug is, komt op 27 alweer de nieuwe Suede binnen, Everything will flow. Volgens Youtube werd deze op 6 september 1999 gereleaset, dus ik was er dit keer vroeg bij . Het is een ballad-achtig nummer met violen en natuurlijk de zang van Brett Anderson, niet opvallend maar wel altijd aangenaam om te horen.

Placebo had al een trits hits in mijn top 40, toen deze Without you I'm nothing uitkwam, met dubbelzang van David Bowie (hij zingt de hele tekst samen met Brian Molko). Dit nummer ontstijgt de Britpop en zetelt ergens op de Olympus van de popmuziek, met een hartverscheurende gitaar, en hetzelfde adjectief past ook bij de tekst en de samenzang. Zo nu en dan laat de zang even op zich wachten, wat het des te indringender maakt. Commercieel bleef het wat tegenvallen, maar artistiek was de naam van Placebo definitief gevestigd.

Op 31 komen de Goo Goo Dolls binnen (tegelijk nog op 38 te vinden in hun 15e week met Iris) met Black balloon, waarop wel wat gas wordt teruggenomen, al zijn de refreinen wel redelijk vlot. Dit haalde in NL nog wel de tipparade, maar hierna was het alweer gedaan met het kortstondige succes van de band.

Op 33 komen de Britse Sneaker Pimps binnen met Low five, hun enige entry bij mij. De band maakte volgens Wiki triphop, maar daar is (inmiddels?) niets meer van te horen. Low five is een wat trage, broeierige rocksong, die nergens buiten de gebaande paden gaat.

Op 34 vinden we dan Toyshop, en dit wordt een alternative rock-band genoemd, uit... Brazilië! Daar is niets van te horen (of te zien in de clip), maar ze blendden goed in op MTV. Daydream is een beetje een prettig niemendalletje, zoals de titel eigenlijk al zegt. Misschien wel een tip voor wat medelijstenmakers?

nieuw:
De hoogste nieuwe is wel een verrassing voor mij. Destijds was ik erg fan van het tweede Placebo-album en ook zeker van het titelnummer Without You I'm Nothing. Hoewel ik toen ook al wel Bowie-liefhebber was, vond ik deze versie eigenlijk afbreuk doen aan het origineel. Nu heb ik allang niet meer zoveel met Placebo, maar bij herbeluistering vond ik juist deze versie wel erg, erg mooi. Ik had hem eigenlijk niet in mijn charts verwacht, maar nu entert hij zelfs de top 10 en wie weet wat er nog meer in het vat zit.

Lamb vond ik toen al fijn en is een van die bands in het genre (een mix van triphop, downtempo, drum & bass) die het best overeind is gebleven na al die jaren. Softly is misschien wel een van hun mooiste nummers.

Nine Inch Nails' eerste single vond ik toen erg tof, zoals het hele The Fragile album. Luister ik nu eigenlijk nooit meer, maar destijds ging de 2CD/3LP (ik heb ze beide) erin als koek. Dit nummer staat zo ongeveer aan het begin van het album en voelt voor mij een beetje als een intro.

Catatonia's Londinium begint met de fraaie openingsregels:
"London never sleeps, it just sucks
The life out of me, and the money from my pocket"
Verder een van de mooiere liedjes van deze Welshe britpopband.

Week 34 met een nieuwe nummer 1 voor de (wat mij betreft) beste band/duo ooit: de Pet Shop Boys. Gisteren kocht ik nog in de voorverkoop hun nieuwe single ‘Feel. Wat punten betreft lijkt het er op dat het wel eens van korte duur kan gaan zijn, want ze gaan van 60 naar 53 punten deze week.

Placebo speelde in het voorprogramma van concerten van David Bowie en nu is er deze single. Tijdens de Brit Awards eerder dit jaar in 1999 zongen ze samen met hem ook nog eens 20th Century Boy.

In Amerika een hit in een versie met Big Boi van Outkast en Nicole Wray, de eerste artiest op Missy Elliott’s nieuwe eigen label. In Europa werd de versie met MC Solaar een hit.

20 | travis - why does it always rain on me?
De derde single van The Man Who, die voor de internationale doorbraak van Travis zorgde. Zanger Fran Healy was in de winter op vakantie in Israël, om wat zon te krijgen, maar net toen hij er was regende het. Vandaar de inspiratie. Dat hij volgens de tekst loog toen hij 17 was, kwam doordat hij op die leeftijd probeerde om een baantje te krijgen in een club in Glasgow.

The Flaming Lips staan alweer zes weken op 1, dus tijd voor een nieuwe? Aan de andere kant zijn ze ook pas zeven weken genoteerd, dus dat is vrij jong voor een sterke plaat om al van 1 af te zakken.

Vijf nieuwe deze week. De hoogste is van Neerlands trots Daryl-Ann, met een van hun bekendste singles, Surely justice. Het refrein is het vaak herhaalde 'got me thinkin' 'bout the law' (dat denk ik tenminste), wat het beeld van het liedje grotendeels bepaalt. Verder natuurlijk degelijke indierock.

De tweede is van Korn, die deze tijd op hun hoogtepunt is. Got the life is weer in dezelfde nu metal-stijl, stevige drums en gitaren en deels schreeuwende vocalen, maar catchy is het ook, en erg populair (vooral in de VS).

Op 35 de eerste entry bij mij van Tricky, een rapper uit Bristol die tot de triphop wordt gerekend. For real zit wat meer in de indierock-richting, wel met raps uiteraard van Tricky, maar de song is relatief conventioneel. Het klinkt prettig, maar niet vlot genoeg voor een hit.

Op 36 de zevende entry alweer bij mij The Offspring, met The kids aren't alright (het lijkt mij een verwijzing naar The kids are alright van The Who). Op deze song klinkt wel het bekende geluid, maar de tekst is toch een stuk serieuzer (het gaat niet goed met de jeugd). In de NL top 40 werd dit nog wel een kleine hit.

En op 37 Rendez-vu, de tweede (en laatste) entry bij mij van Basement-Jaxx. Deze werd een minder grote hit, maar beviel mij wel wat meer, het klinkt wat meer als een organische song.

Gelukkig blijft de rivier aan hits gewoon doorstromen, het is alleen een klere werk om elke week alles wat er op je afkomt goed te sorteren: er is voor heel veel nummers wat te zeggen.

Ik denk dat Suede en Muse dan deze week de twee leukste tracks uitbrengen. Maar ik hou altijd een slag om de arm. Misschien dat Santana en Creed alsnog toeslaan.

Days of the New is een eigen kleine liefhebberij: de band heeft maar kort bestaan, zal nauwelijks nog enige bekendheid genieten maar blijft wel met aardige singles komen.

Vorige week lukte het me niet een nieuwe lijst te maken, deze week wel. Dit keer geen gat van 6 weken zoals vorig jaar maar slechts 1 week, te overzien.
Twee binnenkomers met Jon Spencer-relatie, de hoogste letterlijk want Brassy zangeres Muffin Spencer is de zus van Jon. De ander is Royal Trux, bestaande uit 2 ex-Pussy Galore leden waar Jon natuurlijk ook in zat. Royal Trux klinkt nog wel lekker dwars net als PG, en Brassy, dat eerste album vind ik heerlijk, geweldige mix van stijlen, oa alt rock, hip hop, electro.... jammer dat het 2e album zo waardeloos was (vond ik dan)

Een hele hoop. Loop nog een beetje achter met luisteren en als je dan de tijd hebt dan is dat gelijk wel een feestje, want ik had zo nog 5 nummers kunnen laten binnenkomen. Veel toffe nieuwe muziek, maar de nieuwe Tindersticks springt er wel bovenuit. Kende ik nog niet voor zover ik weet, maar dus een hele fijne ontdekking. Heel wat lager komen we ook nog indie uit Nederland tegen, van Daryll-Ann. Destijds vond ik het wat flauw, maar nu juist wel leuk. Begin oktober 1999 ging ik naar dEUS in Tivoli Vredenburg en daar speelden ze in het voorprogramma. Mooie dubbele bill was dat.

Ook best wat hiphop die doorkomt. Right Now van EPMD heeft het niet gehaald, maar 1 Life 2 Live net wel. Hele sterke Timbaland-productie, maar het liedje an sich blijft niet echt hangen. Vandaar de bescheiden binnenkomst. Heel wat beter doen de Spookrijders dat. Erg leuk nederhiphopnummer van een groep waar ik verder nooit meer wat van gehoord heb. Maar als je deze gasten zo hoort heeft het aan het talent niet gelegen. Ol' Dirty Bastard i.s.m. (voor zover ik weet) de debuterende Kelis komt dan nog binnen met een echte kraker en een van zijn beste nummers.

Gedanst kan er geworden met Craig David. Rewind is uiteindelijk nog bekender geworden in de remix van The Artful Dodger en dat leverde tijdens de laatste Olympische spelen nog een leuke meme op. Maar het origineel is ook al erg goed en een van de grootste hits in het 2-step genre dat destijds erg populair was (vooral in de UK dan). Van The Micronauts' The Jag had ik nog nooit gehoord, maar dit is wel een hele fijne ontdekking, ergens tussen French touch en acid house. Verder mag Apoptygma Berzerk de lijst sluiten met hun Eclipse, een vleermuizerige mix van EBM, trance en synthpop.

Deze Can we start again is destijds langs mij heen gegaan, en zal dus (helaas) niet in mijn lijsten hier voorkomen. Maar wat later heb ik hem wel ergens opgepikt, en vond ik hem direct erg ontroerend (tot tranen toe), en heeft hij ook mijn top 200 Aller Tijden gehaald. Hopelijk gaat hij in de gezamenlijke lijst toch wat doen zonder mijn hulp.

Het duurt nog even voor ik door alle lijsten ben gegaan om een overzicht te maken van alle gezamenlijke top 20-lijsten tot nu toe, maar het zou me niet verbazen als we deze week drie records hebben.

1. De snelste stijger naar nummer 1? Placebo en David Bowie stijgen van 15 naar 1 met Without You I’m Nothing (musician #3, Ries_72 #6, herman #7, ranboy #13).

2. De hoogste re-entry ooit? Na één week op nummer 18 twee weken geleden, komen The 3 Jays opnieuw binnen op 2 met Feeling It Too (Martijn Jonkers #1, AngeloV #8, pureshores #8).

3. De grootste val vanaf nummer 1? De Pet Shop Boys zakken van 1 naar 17 met I Don't Know What You Want But I Can't Give It Anymore (pureshores #3, Ries_72 #12, Martijn Jonkers #16).

Scritti Politti begon als punkband en brak in de jaren ’80 door met synthpop. Nu komen ze na zeven jaar pauze terug met Hip Hop, met op dit nummer een bijdrage van Mos Def en Lee Majors.

De single die wordt gezien als de doorbraaksingle van Apollo Four Forty, gebaseerd op een sample van Caroline van Status Quo.

Oeh, blijkbaar heb je net mijn lijst gemist. Zal hem voortaan wat eerder proberen te posten.

Maar wel bizar die (vast wel) records. Er lijkt maar weinig consensus te zijn tussen de verschillende lijsten. Er zit ook maar 10 punten verschil tussen nummer 6 en nummer 20.

Flaming Lips nu 7 weken op 1, maar wel een aantal platen dat ook op die plek aast.

Op 22 een glorieuze return van de band Live met The dolphin's cry. In de top 40 hadden ze al een paar jaar geen hits meer gescoord, maar deze wordt zelfs de langst genoteerde (16 weken), al is het niet hun hoogst genoteerde. Het is een vakkundig opgebouwde power ballad, begeleid door een spectaculaire videoclip, waardoor de heren terug kwamen van nooit weggeweest.

Op 28 ook een glorieuze (sorry) entry voor Andreas Johnson, namelijk met zijn enige top 40-hit Glorious. De Zweedse singer-songwriter scoorde met deze krachtige song zomaar een wereldhit, maar een echt vervolg hierop is nooit gekomen.

Het Belgische Soulwax heeft al een flink aantal hits bij mij op hun naam staan, en met Too many DJ's komt er moeiteloos weer eentje bij. Ze hebben een bijzonder gave om heel diverse liedjes te maken, die toch steeds iets pakkends hebben, en dat geldt zeker voor deze. Onterecht dat ze (in NL) nooit een hit gescoord hebben.

Het Britse James grossiert ook in fijne (britpop) singles, vaak rijk georkestreerd maar altijd herkenbaar aan de stem. Feel like Fred Astaire is een prettige, relatief ingetogen song die net niet genoeg blijft hangen.
